Hankering for Official D&D Power Cards!

Oct 21, 2008 18:35:07 I smell it in the water. The scent of awesome. Apparently the minis are coming with exclusive power cards for the game. This is where I so hope it goes:

Power Cards. You buy a set of cards (I'd like to see one main pack per class 1-30, but not sure how many cards is too many--so you might break it down by tier as well). You might throw in an exclusive mini, maybe some special dice. Each card would be set up like a magic card, with nice flavor art and the basic power mechanics with that awesome new D&D logo on the back--the one with the red circle and the up and down spearheads.

Then you have packs of boosters, these could be a randomized grab bag of powers across the whole game, semi-randomized with so many of each kind of card, or targeted--you buy a "Heroic Paladin" pack. Whatever, and I'd be fine with it. In these you get a whole slew of new power options for your characters. Tons. You don't need to buy a whole book just to get more options, instead you can get just what you want and as much of it as you want--with each one having good imagination fueling art and a good tactical breakdown of how the power works. Slice of awesome.

Anyhow that's what I'm hoping is happening, that this power cards in the minis box is testing the waters for something like that.

They come in power source packs, Martial Cards, Arcane Cards, etc. They come out after PHB2 so they might include the powers in that but before Eberron Player's Guide so the Arcane deck won't include Artificer.

That's not quite right. The listing for "Martial Power cards" refers to cards for powers released in the Martial Power book. IIRC, they'll come divided into class and book separations, ie a Player's Handbook Warlock deck, or a Martial Power Rogue deck.

Oct 22, 2008 14:26:55 Really? Sweet! Any hints yet as to what the format will look like? I mean are we talking about good quality Magic style cards with art and everything? Man I hope so. That said, as long as it's something prettier than flat black text on an earth colored card I'll be happy-ish.

I guess my drive for wanting them to have a more CCG approach to them is maybe it will attract more of that market and be an excuse to up the quality of the cards. As useful as the cards would be in any form, I really will be a lot more into them if they aren't just boring words on cardstock.

There will also be one deck for each class in Martial Power, with all those powers. Presumably, this will be followed by decks for PHBII, Arcane Power, et al, though those have not yet been announced. So far, no listing for a Swordmage deck.

Oct 23, 2008 3:50:49 Yeah, and that sounds awesome. There's lots of things I'd like to see happen, but the idea of actual WotC produced Power Cards are totally one of the things on the list.

But again, big worry: ugly cards with no art.

I'd love to see cards come out, but I can tell you hands down the art is what will sell me one way or the other. I don't care if it's recycled art. I really don't care if it's ripped off from another line of cards like Magic or Dream-whatever. The art, whether there is any and if it looks good, is ultimately going to be the decision point of if I buy every deck they offer or if I just throw up my hands and start making my own cards using the Magic Set Editor.
