| #1admcewenApr 21, 2009 12:59:09 | I have contacted three online Bookstores including Amazon and the earliest date I have been given is May 6th-11th Has anyone else in the UK had the same trouble and would they like to express an opinion on this i.e why has the UK got to wait? |
| #2shimeranApr 21, 2009 15:19:58 | It's not just the UK. I'm over in California, USA and I'm having no luck. I've checked out 3 stores and it's not in stock in any of them despite being in the product catalog of 2 of them. I did a check on one of the chains and despite having 6 shops in this area code it's out of stock in all but one of them. That's right, out of stock on launch day. Amazon isn't much help here either as my order from them is postponed until July. |
| #3simbicatApr 21, 2009 15:50:40 | Got mine from Orc's Nest in London today - was the only store I could find that had it in stock though. |
| #4jhanzurApr 21, 2009 16:13:44 | I'm in the US, New ENgland are, FLGS got their shipment a day early, so that had it this morning. |
| #5Kobold_AvengerApr 21, 2009 18:50:13 | I'm in Raleigh NC, USA and i got my copy from amazon today while i was at school. |
| #6admcewenApr 22, 2009 2:02:19 | Hmm seems like some parts of the US are having issues as well. Still non the less call me unreasonable but if a company gives a release date for a product and than doesn't supply any copies to a country for that date then people from that area have a right to complain. What is the point of a relase date if you can't follow it? This is the third time this has happened to me![]() |
| #7jobberApr 22, 2009 2:57:13 | Amazon changed my delivery date to may 6th late last night, after it saying expected delivery of April 21st for most of yesterday. Anyone know what the particuler issue is? |
| #8DuskweaverApr 22, 2009 3:16:18 | I imagine running a company that exclusively produces items for a niche hobby in what could very well be the Great Depression 2.0 must be quite scary. People who are close to the edge financially are going to be cutting back drastically on 'luxury' spending. If you've just lost your job and know it might be months or even years before you can get a new one, you're not going to be spending what little money you have on D&D books. The guys and girls running the show at WotC/Hasbro know this and are probably terrified. It may or may not be the right solution (and abject fear tends to inspire really stupid decisions), but it's completely understandable that WotC are playing things very, very 'safe' right now. That means smaller print-runs, as well as concentrating more on the much larger (and therefore more dependable) US market, rather than the (relatively tiny) UK market. They're not going to want to risk shipping a lot of (heavy) books to a tiny little island in the Atlantic unless they're absolutely sure they are going to sell. It's really annoying to us Brits, of course, and (IMO at least) it's exactly the wrong decision for the long term. WotC runs the risk of killing D&D in the UK altogether and essentially handing Games Workshop a monopoly on the UK tabletop gaming market. But big corporations tend to favour the short term over the long term, especially in times of economic trouble (when taking a hit in the short term might mean you aren't around to benefit in the long term). So, is this annoying? Hell, yes! Is it going to come back to bite WotC in the rear? Probably. Is it insane or indefensible or even remotely unexpected? Not at all. |
| #9crimsonsun_2000Apr 22, 2009 3:45:13 | mine been delayed to 6-12th of may, which is driving me mad having ordered the book three months ago, what i dont understand is how some people have had there copy for three weeks and we have to wait another three. My local gaming store are supposed to be getting it in today, so i will phone up a reserve a copy in twenty mins when the store is open, as i have to spend all day travelling by train and this was going to keep me sane. They have also not sent me E1 deaths reach on the same reasoning. Im furious and cant understand what they are playing at. I do not know why amazon dont feel it appropriate to let customers know in advance that they cannot meet there order expectations and only change it after the books should have been dispatched. It does seem that the UK market is not important to WotC |
| #10rostiApr 22, 2009 4:22:40 | I'm also waiting on Amazon; whilst I'd like to blame someone, it could just as easily be that stockists in the UK don't want to risk taking on the books as much as WotC not wanting to take risks. DDi will tide me over, but having just received PHB2 last week (and what a pretty book it is!), I'm a little downbeat... It doesn't help that Amazon fabricate their estimated delivery times, mind. |
| #11PobmanApr 22, 2009 4:56:24 | I'm not really a retail expert, but I wonder why if Amazon UK had so many pre-orders why it wouldn't order that many? And if WotC knew how many pre-orders there were, why wouldn't they send out that many at the very least to the UK? |
| #12lord_herman_02Apr 22, 2009 5:11:13 | That's what I was wondering too. I pre-ordered Arcane Power over a month ago, and now Amazon.co.uk tells me it's been delayed. And this isn't the first time that's happed; the Draconomicon, Open Grave, and the Manual of the Planes, which I pre-ordered at Amazon, were all delayed by two or three weeks. With the PHBII arriving on time, I thought they'd fixed whatever it was that was delaying those orders, but apperently they haven't. |

I'm in your same situation, with the difference that I cannot get a copy from any of my FLGSs (since I live in Italy, which is a stupid country in which noone understands English and therefore noone sells books in English). The funny thing is that, with the CB updating next week, I could easily avoid buying the book. ![]() |

I suspect that this is Wizards policy to damage Amazon, possibly due to the agressive discounting. I'm also waiting for my AP which is currently delayed. My FLGS is closing, otherwise they'd have had my business, like the've had for the past 15 years. |
| #15kamikazegerbilApr 22, 2009 12:31:40 | I'm still waiting for my PHB2 from Amazon. I suspect that this is Wizards policy to damage Amazon, possibly due to the agressive discounting. I'm also waiting for my AP which is currently delayed. It's not just Wizards products they do this with, RPGs, computer games, etc. It seems if it's in high demand Amazon will delay a bucketload of Pre-oreders because they don't have enough in stock. They simply don't take they number of Pre-orders into account when ordering in and don't bother to tell customers this until the last minute. |
| #16sir_anarchApr 22, 2009 14:10:37 | I'm still waiting for the PHB2 and will not buy another book until this arrives. I'm not sure if WOTC are being conservative with print runs, Amazon are poor at pre-orders, or (whisper it... the haters are listening) D&D4 is exceeding expectations. I'd like to think it is the third, but have no evidence. ![]() |
| #17poosticks7Apr 22, 2009 16:04:51 | I placed my order with Amazon.UK ages ago. My delivery date hasn't change (yet). It says 28 April - 5 May. Has said that since I placed the order. I have had trouble with amazon before though. |
| #18psk20Apr 22, 2009 16:10:27 | Well, this pisses me off. I live in New Zealand and sometimes new releases can be weeks late. My local store hasn't even received word that their stockists have AP yet. "Stealing" (scare-quotes here, because the suggestion that it is such a thing is ludicrous) gave me a method of acquiring a book that I'd already paid for, ahead of time. Before the .pdfs were revoked, I would have paid for most 4e books even though I could have downloaded them for free, to support Wizards and their creation of a game I get lots of enjoyment out of. The last thing I would like is for wizards to go broke. After this.. well.. I guess I'll have to think about it. But it's really tempting to cancel my pre-order and wait for the inevitable scans to show up. It's just a crappy move by Wizards. Anyone familiar with prisoner's dilemma? Wizards and I are on the brink of going from cooperation to mutual disdain. |
| #19ausliefApr 22, 2009 17:30:15 | Got mine today in Orc's Nest in London; I love that little yellow shrine of geekery :D |
| #20klaustheprinceApr 22, 2009 17:30:20 | "Stealing" (scare-quotes here, because the suggestion that it is such a thing is ludicrous) gave me a method of acquiring a book that I'd already paid for, ahead of time. This. I bought every 4ed supplement (besides the adventures - and I wouldn't even bother to download pirated copies of those, since I'd just waste space on my hard disk) but I had to wait, sometimes wait a lot, to get my copy from Amazon. Today I learned that I'd probably receive my copy 2 weeks or so after the official release date, which means nearly a month after the Japanese got their own. WTF? When there were the PDFs, I could have had access to the handbooks while I was waiting for my copy; now I can just curse at random people who got their copies. Where is the fun in all this? What does WotC earn? The Compendium and the CB will be updated well before I could have my copy of AP: being a subscriber - which I am - is also a way not to pay for a copy of the book, and it's perfectly legal. Think about that, WotC. You're making me - and not only me - less and less willing to pay for your products. |
| #21NautilusApr 22, 2009 18:08:11 | I'm in New Zealand, and was looking forward to getting AP this week, only for the FLGS to tell me it'd be late next week due to shipping delays. Bit disappointing, especially after the PHB2 showed up so promptly. Have had to tide myself over with the FRPG - mmm, spellscars... |
| #22bluekieranApr 23, 2009 3:59:23 | Orc's Nest also sell online, it may be worth asking them if they've still got stock. They charge more than Amazon, but at least I managed to get a copy! http://orcsnest.com/blurber.asp?Title=Arcane%20Power%20Sourcebook |
| #23ruroshinApr 23, 2009 5:52:27 | From Australia, had mine on preorder from Amazon US but cancelled it when PH2 came out as I found my FLGS got PH2 on the release day so I thought I could get Arcane Power the same way. Came release day, walked in the FLGS, no copy. They said they still don't know when they'll get some in. I tried other stores and they didn't had any stock either. So went back on Amazon US and made an order, it shipped the same day. Next time, I'm just gonna preorder from Amazon Japan and get it sooner. |
| #24ignizApr 23, 2009 7:31:15 | Got AP from Forbidden Planet in London yesterday, they had a few copies and may still have some today. |
| #25klaustheprinceApr 23, 2009 9:02:44 | Just discovered that one of my FLGs is going to get copies next Tuesday, so I reserved one. Of course, it's still a week after the realase date, so thank you again WotC. ![]() |
| #26arcanewhisperz_dupApr 24, 2009 0:24:36 | I was wondering what the deal was. I've checked probably 80% of the locations here with no luck. Finally I decided to check online today to see what the deal was. |
| #27jobberApr 24, 2009 1:51:47 | Complete guess with no foundation to back it up but id say the shipment that came in wasnt enough to cover demand and the supplies went to Local Game Stores rather than big places like Amazon and Play. |
| #28admcewenApr 24, 2009 7:35:13 | I have tried this and got my copy today, so their you go a Gaming store got it to me quicker than Amazon. Don't know how many other copies Orcsnest have but would recomend trying them if you can't wait for Amazon. Hmm seems like major booksellers like Amazon /Waterstones are either holding back or haven't got copies and Games stores have got plenty![]() Orc's Nest also sell online, it may be worth asking them if they've still got stock. They charge more than Amazon, but at least I managed to get a copy! |
| #29lord_herman_02Apr 24, 2009 15:32:56 | Amazon.co.uk just shipped my copy of Arcane Power, even though they'd told me it wouldn't be available until early May. |
| #30zephyrstormApr 24, 2009 16:30:37 | I received an email from Amazon UK this evening saying that my order for Arcane Power and Death's Reach had shipped and should be with me either Saturday or Monday. This comes off the back of a frustrated email I sent to Amazon regarding spurious release date information and their uncanny ability to keep pushing order ship dates back. I ordered PHB2 several weeks before its March release date and as of Monday this week still hadn't received it. So on Wednesday evening I cancelled with Amazon and went to Leisure Games online (based in London) and within two days of order they've shipped the PHB2 and also a couple packs of PHB Heroes miniatures (that Amazon aren't selling until late May!!) I say, all hail the FLGS. (Friendly "Leisure Games" Store) |
| #31Mr_RoseApr 25, 2009 11:53:45 | I'm in your same situation, with the difference that I cannot get a copy from any of my FLGSs (since I live in Italy, which is a stupid country in which noone understands English and therefore noone sells books in English). The funny thing is that, with the CB updating next week, I could easily avoid buying the book. This may not be relevant to you, but there is a nice little place in Rome, just around the corner from the Spanish steps and past the leather shop, that sells English books of all sorts. Though I very much doubt they have Arcane Power in stock, they can probably order it for you, but it may well cost you more than just getting it shipped from Amazon UK. ![]() Especially if you don't live in Rome (sorry, you didn't specify... ;) ). Anyway, Amazon claims to have shipped my AP, hopefully it will arrive Monday. Strangely though, I never experienced any of the problems that so many others had with the PHII... |
| #32stardustApr 27, 2009 15:48:27 | How bizarre... I just wandered into my FLGS the day after release day (Released on Tuesday, I game there on Wednesdays) and picked a copy right off the shelf. Then two of my gaming buddies came in and picked up copies for themselves. On Saturday, when I went in to play Legend of 5 Rings, they had another 3 in stock. I didn't hear about any problems at all... That said, my friends who have been buying from amazon have had all kinda of problems for nearly all the 4th ed books - one was waiting for his Manual of the Planes for nearly 2 months before it arrived, even when he preordered it... Oh and if anybody is wondering, I don't even live in a big city - a largish town, sure, but nowhere near the size of the cities like London, Leeds, Manchester or anything... |
| #33snarls_at_fleasApr 28, 2009 3:11:19 | Has anyone in the UK got Arcane power? Harry Potter is the first who comes to mind... ![]() |
| #34klaustheprinceApr 28, 2009 5:13:00 | Anyway, Amazon dispatched my book last Friday. How useless is to ship on Fridays, I couldn't say. ![]() |
| #35psk20Apr 29, 2009 2:35:56 | My FLGS still has no idea when my one is showing up. QQ! |
| #36sengirworgApr 29, 2009 2:44:28 | My guess is they sent all of England's and half of the US orders to Japan instead since they've had it, as usual, several weeks early... WotC's distribution channels seem to be run about as professionally as their marketing channels...as in NOT AT ALL |
