Our group is new to D&D 4th ed

We have all bought the Essentials books, and are slowly learning the game, (some of us did play 1st edition D&D, many moons ago!)

What other books, from the current, or upcoming releases, would be useful additions?

If you want to go with some more advanced options (especially for martial character), you might want to consider the 3 PHB's, as well as whatever power books suit your needs.

Or at least different options for your characters.  But if you already have characters built up with the Player's Essentials books, you'll want to look into March's Player's Option: Heroes of Shadow to add a bit of shadowy power.  Also, check out Mordenkainen's Magnificent Emporium for new item options, coming in April.

But before that, if you REALLY want to check out the Player's Handbook series, it might be fruitful to pick up the Class Compendium: Heroes of Sword and Spell in February, since it takes 5 classes from the Player's Handbook 1, and updates them to the format you saw in Player's Essentials, with the most up-to-date rules revisions in place as well.  It's probably more valuable if you already have the two Player's Essentials books, since it doesn't repeat the races you already have (all of the PH1 races are covered by Player's Essentials), but it does cover versions of the Cleric, Fighter, Rogue, Warlord, and Wizard as they appeared in Player's Handbook, but in the new format, and in a way they can easily coexist alongside the Warpriest, Knight, Slayer, Thief, and Mage.

I found that both the PHB and Essentials had too few Magic items. Adventurer's Vault II has less erratta than Vault I, but Vault I has more stuff for Wizards, Fighters, Rogues and Clerics.

DMG2 is a great source for campaign ideas and has some "magic items" in it as well.

Thanks for the information I will be keeping a looking out for "Adventures Vault I & II, and the info on the core rule books.

I will also check out the pre-release prices, of the books that Marndahir has mentioned, especially as they seem to cover classes from the earlier PHB, updated to Essentials.

Does this mean that all future releases will be based on the new essentials format?

No one really knows. The product catalog for the foreseeable future is more options for both with an unknown split percentage. You may or may not have noticed but the uncertainty has caused more than a few "debates" on the matter, especially in the General Discussion area.

I highly recommend DMG2 also a very good book just for the insights even for long time gamers.
