I have been trying to think of a way to solve this because your player character should be unique and represent your unique creation. The solution I finally came up with was this: Wizards of the Coast should sell pre-painted plastic body parts and weapons/items that clip together. I like that the D&D miniatures are pre-painted (since I'm not the best at painting) so I'd keep that idea. But what you would get is a heap of different pre-painted bits, e.g. you might get a box/blister pack of elf heads (each with different facial features/expressions), and then, depending on your class, clip them to a robed body or an armoured body. Hair could also be customisable: long hair, short hair, mohawk hair, etc. in different colours and packaged with the bald heads. The hair would then clip onto the heads. Weapons would clip into the hands, etc. I have not idea about pricing or if this is viable, and I'd keep the pre-painted miniatures exactly as they are now for NPCs. But it's a cool thought. Even if it is a bit dearer it'd be worth it for your PC. What do you think? |

I am not sure about the "clipping" portion because of the scale of the models, but I think you could definitely buy "race packs" and accessory packs" or even a starter set in the manner of Warhammer where you just use the bits to create your mini. Being able to snap them together and rearrange them would be nice, but I would most likely go for unpainted, glue-able minis and just buy more as my PCs changed. In fact, you could just do this with Warhammer fantasy (or any other line that sells minis in the race you want). Buy a set with the base race and then use bits from other sets (get like a tackle box or some organizational holder to sort the stuff for findability later) to make your PC. |

Also, with the clip function you can try out different looks without being committed by glueing. And pre-painted for me just because I'm a lousy painter. I wouldn't mind if these packs cost a fair bit as long as the quality was good; good solid plastic and good paint jobs. |
