At the back of the D&D Free RPG day booklet is an advert for the summer season on Encounters.

"For DMing one or more sessions of D&D Encounters (in August for the "Lost Crown of Neverwinter" season), Wizards of the Coast will mail you a special bonus adventure, Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (the classic D&D adventure revised for 4th Edition rules) to the store in your name as a reward!"

This is similar to the DM rewards in the past, where DMs got "Village of Homlet" and "Tomb of Horrors" (the 4ed revision, not the hardcover reimagining).

I was surprised when i read that.

Its unfortunate i can't DM  Encounters and won't get my chubby hands on it.

But i am still happy that they release Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan with a 4E treatement. I would have hope they release it for public sales. Well.

This is serious bait to get people DM'ing encounters. This was a classic adventure from 1e and a lot of people would love to get their hands on it. I would expect this to start on ebay for $50 and go up from there. Start saving your pennies!

I think 'not fair' might be a bit dramatic. If no on got it you would not have been upset, and the idea of a reward is something you get that is special and extra for helping WotC, so how would it be fair to them if they got nothing, or something that felt mundain like a product a bit early. How would it be fair to the game shop if there were no incentives to have DMs run games every week in their shop...
If my father read that post I know what he'd say, "Not fair, I'll show you not fair...."

This. Encounters lives or dies on the DM showing up and running a session. If this convinces someone to take up the mantle and run Encounters for an extended period, then that helps the Encounters program and the FLGS. Frankly, it's one of the better play support deals for a WotC program.

as a tier 2 encounter DM (i run an alternate table when we have a surplus of attendees), one thing im concerned about is this sentence:
"...run at least one session of 'D&D Encounters: Lost Crown of Neverwinter' during the month of August (August 10-31, 2011)."
what if we only have one table during the first four weeks ? if this season is like the past two (13 sessions), i could run a table for over 2 months and not qualify for the DM reward. that would kinda feel like a kick in the junk.

(im not greedy, just a collector!)

Am I the only person who expects to give this away to a friend who wants it when I get it because I think the premise sucks and is totally contrary to the intent of 4th Ed?

I also don't think I would ever play it, just read it to see what they made of the old lore

I actually proposed to my group to do our own adaptation, and compare it to this one.

Its not only an adventure, is a good exercise in adapting older adventures.

And by the way, speaking of adaptations, heres something i found while searching for more info on the adventure: a Neverwinter Nights 1 module adaptation.

You have lucky friends jonathan. Wink

Regarding the Adventure's premise, well, it's a tournament adventure originally designed to kill it's trespassers. Like all these lieu should be design for other than protecting their subject. 4E is really forgiving and i still think it will be more forgiving than Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan can be unforgiveable.

Take 4E's Tomb of Horror,  it's more forgiving that it used to be isn't it ?

my game shop doesnt run encounters, so i cant get this product. now i have to buy it on ebay. a lot of people talk about 'rewarding' these great dms, but like all rewards products they end up on ebay the next day. thats just the facts

give the adventure to them, but at least let other people who dont live near shops or whose shops dont run dnd a chance to at least buy it. i dont see what so hard to freaking understand about it

I've seen the adventure. It is really cool. Good mix of encounter types, great classic feel, and it comes with nice map / tile map!

Well, in this case the selling DMs are rewarded with money. Just as well for them if they prefer it that way.

sure, like i said, give it away to them as a reward, then sell it to others who dont have game shops that run encounters. not that hard to understand

I'm not sharing that to hurt anyone, mind you!   Just saying, it is something worth driving out to DM for, if you can, even if the store is a bit out of the way.

On the issue of Encounters DMs getting something they can sell... I have mixed feelings. In the end, it is probably fine. DMs usually turn that cash into other products they want. I find a lot of our local Encounters judges don't really feel they need the adventure after running it and are happy to trade for something else or to sell it. This case is a bit different since they won't have judged it... most DMs will want to keep it. It may make Tamoachan a very expensive buy.

I personally would like to see all of these types of adventures offered for sale six months after they release. My hope is that once WotC figures out how to distribute digitally they will do that. But, I don't expect such an endeavor this year.

It comes with a double-sided poster folded within the adventure. One side is a cool map, the other is a tile map upon which you can play. The tile map portion covers two of the encounters, but they are definitely cool maps visually.

Also, there is classic (reprinted) artwork, giving it a very cool old school feel. Very fun. I really wish Wizards were selling printed adventures or pdfs like this. I would think it would be a popular purchase.

Sounds like a well made remake. Thanks for the insight Alphastream1

Did you playtested it ? If so, without revealing any real details since you couldn't, can you give us a your impression of it ?

I did not playtest it. But, it is pretty cool. In classic style it has a lot of rooms and is pretty concise for each room. As was shared in the article, the poisonous gas mechanic keeps PCs from taking too many short rests and makes having a lot of short encounters work well. I have not played it but look forward to doing so once it is publicly available!
