int/cha path for fighters

Oct 23, 2008 23:51:59 An archetype I want to play is a martial powered, witty/intellectual warrior who is either a striker or a defender. I'm talking about a new power tree for fighters involving a bluffing/feinting path ( strength and charisma) or a skilled power tree (strength and intelligence). The feinting path is like the swashbuckler concept, except it has access to the fighters weapon based powers and combat challenge. The skilled path I imagine to be a tactically skilled fighter. He does not use tactics to lead other like the warlord, but instead learns complex combat techniques and stances. Any chance the martial power book would have something like this?

If not, I could play a thaneborn barbarian and change the flavour and explanation for its powers. Or I could wait for the swashbuckler (which will probably have int and cha powers) and take fighter power feats.

Oct 24, 2008 8:01:09 Martial Power's new builds for the fighter are a two-weapon build and build based on Con. So there won't be a build for it. There might still be some new powers that work though(but probably not as many as you would like).

And I wouldn't hold my breath on a swashbuckler class. They have made no mention of making one, and it certainly won't be in PHBII, so the earliest it theoretically could appear would be in PHBIII, and considering that all current speculation is that they will be covering all eight power sources before they start to expand "complete" power sources, it would have to be a Ki, Shadow, Elemental, or Psionic. None of those scream swashbuckler to me.

Your best bet at the moment is just to pray that they release a Martial Power 2(which is a possibility) and they include such a build option in that.....or maybe a Class Acts in Dragon covering such powers.

.....Doh. I knew I forgot one of my reasons for why there won't be a swashbuckling class.

Oct 24, 2008 11:07:12 I'd say the rogue is the best bet for creating a swashbuckler-type character at the moment. There might be a duelist/swashbuckler paragon path in Martial Power for this kind of character, which would help out a bit. Also, depending on the build one could multiclass to fighter and get some of the tempest fighter powers (if they're keyed off DEX).

1. New feats which take advantage of Int and/or Cha. IMHO, there should have been more in the PHB. Int and Cha get the feat shaft.

2. Paragon paths which utilize Int or Cha, like the Wandering Swordmage uses Wis.

Oct 27, 2008 15:58:42 The Rogue preview definitely implies swashbuckler as a Paragon path for them. And, since Rogue attack progression no longer falls considerably behind Fighters as it did in previous editions, for once I feel this is fine.
