Invoker's Angel of Fire

An invoker can summon an Angel of Fire as a Daily Power. The invoker can command the angel to attack. But the power doesn't say the AC of the Angel or its hit points (if any). The power doesn’t say how long the Angel of Fire will stay fighting either.

I guess the angel works like the Cleric’s Guardian of Faith. The guardian last until the end of the encounter and cannot be attacked. But the Angel of Fire looks more powerful than the Guardian of Faith.

Otherwise, the Angel of Faith can work like the Angel of Valor minion. An angel resistant to fire and radiant, with a good AC but it is a minion.

How do you think the Angel of Fire works?

No real point speculating until the book sees print.

I would figure it operates like Flaming Sphere ... a wandering damage source.

I think we need to wait till the summoning keyword is explained.

That was the conclusion I came to Renchard. Until we know more about how summoning works it doesn't make much sense to try and figure out how it works.

I would like to create a monster using the Invoker as a template to use in my current campaign. And I think it will surprise a lot to the players to see their enemy summoning an Angel of Fire. So, for me is important to speculate. I hope they clarify soon what the Summoning keyword means.

But for now, I guess I will have to “house-rule” how it works.

Level 1 controller power, so probably most similar to Flaming Sphere.

I'd say something along the lines of a mix between flaming sphere's mechanic with the beastmaster mechanic. i.e. flaming sphere that lasts encounter, (so no need to sustain) but will require standard actions to do anything interesting.

It actually works much less like flaming sphere and more like the beast for beast masters. It doesn't take move or minor actions, it has it's own, plus, it can make opportunity attacks with your opportunity action.

The summoning keyword has yet to be explained and I'm sure it will be the biggest difference between the rest. probably has hp and leaves at the end of the encounter.

I'm betting since it's a daily, it will be almost identical to the figurines. You summon and they last a certain amount of time or until the are destroyed. They'll have HP which can be syphoned to them through your own healing surges. They will most likely be a set level and stats, only getting more powerful if you get a higher level summon.

If they go that route, I think it would make more sense to have the summon's HP and defenses scale by the summoner's level. You keep your level 1 dailies for a long time -- at level 13 you won't want to be summoning a level 1 guy. I think the Wizards learned that lesson pretty well from 3E.

If you want to do a monster with a summon ability, for now I would suggest using a conjuration as a stand-in. Your players aren't going to know that the fire angel is functionally a flaming sphere, all they know is what you describe it doing.

Yeah, you're right. 20/20 vision in hindsight I guess, scaling levels is the best option, but I don't think it will scale much more than just the defenses and HP.

I agree, since the attack bonus should simply be the attack bonus of the summoner.

You might check out the playtest for the Artificer, the way the Artifice keyword works is probably somewhat similar to the way the summon keyword will work. In that case you can move the Artifice with a minor action, it has defenses equal to your level+4 and hitpoints equal to your healing surge value.

Thanks for pointing that out. I didn’t remember about the Artificer play test. I think it could be a better mechanic for the Angel of Fire. I will use it this Saturday on my campaign and I will let you know how it worked.

Finally the summoning rules were revealed. We do not longer need to speculate.

Now that we know how summoning works... It looks like a really nice power. I mean, You can drop close burst attacks and OA b****es like its no problem. Compared against the Fire Warrior Summon that was shown to us last week, this seems superior.

The Angel is more of hammer while the warrior is the scalpel. It's hard to use the AoE everytime and not to hit your party while the warrior can attack precisely all the time (but you shouldn't use the warrior to attack something)

Used this daily power today. Admittedly it was kind of the perfect storm. There were four regular monsters and eight minions in a room. We were in the next room. Our fighter blocked the door. Then our wizard cast an effect which lasted until the end of the next round, and damaged anyone who tried to walk up to the door. Then he sustained it for an additional round with an encounter power.

Meanwhile I placed the Angel of Fire in the room, attacked five enemies with it, action pointed, and attacked the four living enemies with it. It was attacked several times, damaged only twice, and survived the fight. It finished off most of our foes single handedly, simply through sheer volume of attacks.
