| #1charkeDec 23, 2007 22:01:59 | Has anyone touched any of the books Wotc has pumped out since 4th was announced? Even by their standard, the last batch of books has been pretty thin. Mark Charke |
| #2john_paul_stoddardDec 23, 2007 22:26:50 | I only purchased PHB, DMG, MM and MIC... So I don't really count but yes..I stopped I was gonna by a couple of others but changed my mine until they get Ebay'ed or clearanced later. |
| #3journeyman_samwiseDec 23, 2007 23:22:31 | 3.5? Psh, what a fad. You guys will be crawling back to AD&D once you realize how superior THAC0 is. |
| #4hawktheone-handedDec 23, 2007 23:43:48 | Rules Compendium completed my set. |
| #5zog_jakomeDec 24, 2007 0:04:58 | Rules Compendium completed my set. same here I think I might buy elder evils though but I won't run that for a very long time. I will still be playing 3.5 for a very long time while learning 4th ed. |
| #6AmarilDec 24, 2007 0:06:37 | Dragons of Eberron, Rules Compendium, Races of the Wild, Races of Destiny, and Races of Stone have all been purchased I made since 4e was announced. I also plan to purchase City of Stormreach. |
| #7kojiro_jamesDec 24, 2007 1:21:34 | Has anyone touched any of the books Wotc has pumped out since 4th was announced? Even by their standard, the last batch of books has been pretty thin. I would if I had a new job and thus new money flowing in. I don't intend to do much with 4e. |
| #8mearrin69Dec 24, 2007 2:15:38 | I haven't bought much of the new stuff but I have been catching up on older things I hadn't bought yet (complete series, environment series). 4E won't stop me from continuing to buy Eberron supplements. I got DoE but I don't know if that came out after the announcement or not. M |
| #9QubeDec 24, 2007 2:30:37 | As my personal protest to the quick release of 4.0 after 3.5 I stopped buying 3.5 stuff. of course I'll buy much 4.0 stuff, being a PRG addict ![]() |
| #10naderionDec 24, 2007 4:47:01 | Now that prices are expected to fall, starting to buy 3.5e books becomes again an interesting idea. But as someone said before, I allready do have PHB, DMG, MM and Spell Compendium, so there isn't really any need to buy anything. |
| #11molten_dragonDec 24, 2007 5:40:23 | I'll probably buy Elder Evils, it looks like fun. I've also been buying some used 3.5 books on Amazon.com and ebay because they're so cheap. Of course, I also don't plan on switching to 4.0 for a couple of years (if at all), so I'll still get quite a bit of mileage out of them. |
| #12ecalsneergDec 24, 2007 6:43:31 | I might pick up Draconomicon cheap if I can. While it does have a lot of crunch, the parts i've read of physiology and tactics can't change too much with 4e. And maybe I could adapt the dragons over... |
| #13starman_ixDec 24, 2007 7:19:19 | Book needed to complete my set: Magic Item Compendium Complete Champion Drow of the Underdark Monster Manual V Exemplars of Evil Rules Compendium Elder Evils |
| #14mosyaliDec 24, 2007 8:46:26 | Since the release of 4.0 information, I actually purchased Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords, Magic Item Compendium, and City of Splendors: Waterdeep. I am well aware of how unlikely that any of these will be useable at 4.0, but I like the 3.5 rules well enough that I might continue to run a campaign in 3.5 while learning 4.0. My parties tend to be sticklers for rulesets learned and it was bad enough converting two of them from 2 to 3.5. Fortunately they are on two year cycles and those guys will be moving in six months, right before 4.0. :D |
| #15lord_karsusDec 25, 2007 6:56:28 | I might pick up Draconomicon cheap if I can. While it does have a lot of crunch, the parts i've read of physiology and tactics can't change too much with 4e. And maybe I could adapt the dragons over... -It was a very good book. The Draconomicon had a very high price, even for a D&D book, though. Off the top of my mind, I think the price on the back cover is $45.99. |
| #16halfslimeDec 25, 2007 7:33:16 | I want to buy Savage Species, but it's been hard to find to find in stores |
| #17ikkiDec 25, 2007 8:34:24 | Has anyone touched any of the books Wotc has pumped out since 4th was announced? Even by their standard, the last batch of books has been pretty thin. I just had a look around in my local gaming shop. D20 & DnD has a small corner in the back of the shop.. stacked with other marginal stuff like cthulhu, rune quest, hero wars.. and many more i cannot even name ;) The majority is anime books, warhammer miniatures and some ...ever shrinking gaming cards. Board games appear to be having a come back. Things were never this bad even when tsr was down and the whole brand was in limbo! Maybe because i kept collecting planescape and other such funny stuff ;) |
| #18ikkiDec 25, 2007 8:57:29 | but back to the question.. nothing since.. september? Got first exp to undermountain and greyhawk. And got thruoughtly disgusted with the encounter-whats-its-called-format. And felt quite cheated too... Then a third party product -city of brass. Now that one made me happy.. almost happy enough to forget the expedition farce. Almost. Nothing since then. Althought i thought of getting the history of the realms... why bother anymore. Its all dead, gone and buried now. I flipped thru one of the 6 copies the gameshop had bought of the race and class or whatsitcalled... damn, seemed like a sold ad to me. That kind of stuff was handed away by the tonne to sell the third edition to us... and now we are expected to shell out €20 to get ads??? No thanks.. no thanks indeed! I have a strong feeling they wont be selling more than one of those 6. And that one buyer will be feeling cheated.. |
| #19kojiro_jamesDec 25, 2007 12:34:12 | -It was a very good book. The Draconomicon had a very high price, even for a D&D book, though. Off the top of my mind, I think the price on the back cover is $45.99. Sure. If you live in Canada. It was $39.95 USD. |
| #20lord_karsusDec 25, 2007 14:23:51 | Sure. If you live in Canada. It was $39.95 USD. -That's what it was. $39.95. But, compare that to the average price of $29.99, and you're still getting a more expensive book. |
| #21hans_kelsenDec 25, 2007 15:55:35 | I´m after the old Dark Sun!Bog blast 4.0, I´m going back to AD&D! On a side note, I think I may buy that Eberron thingy after they announced Forgotten Realms is turning into Forgetable Realms. |
| #22ikkiDec 25, 2007 16:25:21 | -That's what it was. $39.95. But, compare that to the average price of $29.99, and you're still getting a more expensive book. pff.. and i paid ⁈50. try laughing about that.. |
| #23lord_karsusDec 25, 2007 17:37:13 | pff.. and i paid ⁈50. -Well, that's what you get for having Universal Health Care and a higher standard of living. :P |
| #24inkblotDec 25, 2007 18:32:07 | Just a little while ago I bought Tome Of Magic for $6 on Amazon.com. 4e is pushing all the prices of the 3.5 books down. Magic Of Incarnum was going for like $3. Unfortunately, the cheapest Tome Of Battle I found was "only" $10 below the MSRP. |
| #25aleolusDec 25, 2007 18:41:05 | I plan on sticking with 3.5 until well after 2011 or 2012, maybe even longer. I've spent too much money on it to abandon it so easily! |
| #26lord_karsusDec 25, 2007 18:47:57 | 4e is pushing all the prices of the 3.5 books down. -Wait until everyone suddenly starts buying 3e books, to complete their collections. Then inflation is going to set in, and they'll likely return to their normal price, or higher, depending on the book. |
| #27inkblotDec 25, 2007 19:08:51 | Nah, I doubt demand will hit that hard. Plus I'm mostly looking at used books, where there's some insulation form such market forces. |
| #28feroxDec 25, 2007 21:45:08 | I got the book of exalted deeds for Christmas. I plan on picking up the MMs that I don't have, and possibly a few others. 4th edition isn't attracting me at all. |
| #29ranger_of_renwoodDec 25, 2007 23:07:44 | I bought the Rules Compendium not too long ago. I'll probably pick up the Eberron books too if I can find them second-hand and/or cheap. Although I haven't heard any kind of announcement, I would really like to see another volume of material from Dragon Magazine to be released. I don't ever plan on updating to 4E as 3.5 works perfectly fine for me and my group. If there's something I particularly like about the new edition I'll find a way to house rule it in. |
| #30habbalahDec 25, 2007 23:13:00 | Has anyone touched any of the books Wotc has pumped out since 4th was announced? Even by their standard, the last batch of books has been pretty thin. I have. And I intend to buy more if more good ones come out. Which is more than I can say for 4.0 |
| #31lord_karsusDec 25, 2007 23:49:32 | I bought the Rules Compendium not too long ago. -How is it? Does it literally have every rule? And, does it explain said rules, or does it just cite where to find the actual instructions? |
| #32zog_jakomeDec 26, 2007 3:16:05 | -How is it? Does it literally have every rule? And, does it explain said rules, or does it just cite where to find the actual instructions? Rules compendium is awesome. they talk about what you can do in D&D without getting a feat for it. and no they don't just site the rule they explain it and then they explain it in a little more detail. usually about 1 page per rule. they also give you insight about why some rules are the way the are, and how they came to be. (behind the curtain, footnotes, experiences etc) one thing they haven't done that I wish they did is a feat compendium. I would buy that in a second. im tired of going through 15 different books for a good feat to get |
| #33lord_karsusDec 26, 2007 3:39:34 | one thing they haven't done that I wish they did is a feat compendium. I would buy that in a second. -They have plenty of unofficial ones on the internet. Just look and you'll come up with something. Feats and PrCs. |
| #34wazzaDec 26, 2007 7:39:27 | I sold the last of my 3.0 and 3.5 collection on eBay recently. I must have had 50+ books but the annoucement of 4e put me off D&D. I may even consider running an AD&D 1st edition campaign as a friend of mine has all the old books and wants to offload them! Lucky Me! Seriously though, I won't be buying 4e after spending so much on 3e. Besides I've discovered World of Darkness which is a far superior system IMO and encourages role playing over power gaming which seems to be where D&D is heading after looking at the 4e articles and that's a route I don't want to take. Sad really... |
| #35huntmasteravatarDec 26, 2007 7:41:26 | Has anyone touched any of the books Wotc has pumped out since 4th was announced? Even by their standard, the last batch of books has been pretty thin. i plan to buy the remaining dragonlance gaming books i dont have along with the 5th monster manual. aside from that i dont plan to buy anything else. but i havnt researched whats out yet. i may pick up a few more books if i can mainly due to trying to stay with 3.5. i dont plan to update to 4e for some years. |
| #36larry_the_titanDec 26, 2007 9:39:19 | Besides I've discovered World of Darkness which is a far superior system IMO and encourages role playing over power gaming which seems to be where D&D is heading after looking at the 4e articles and that's a route I don't want to take. Sad really... WoD is good for RP but terrible for combat. Trust me on this I played it for 2 years. My character never got any real strength. Sure I could do some cool things but the health system really blows. I think the next time I play WoD I will convert the WoD Health system over to the Deadlands Health system and that might remove some of my problems with the game. Now back to the original topic, I only have 2 books left on my list for 3.5 D&D Examplers of Evil and Stormreach. After I get those I will be saving up for 4th ed. The system seems very promising but with the lack of game options at the start I will be waiting till later before I start playing the new system so I will still be using all my old 3.5 stuff. |
| #37cryosilverDec 26, 2007 13:03:40 | I'm planning on buying about 3 or 4 more books to round out a collection that I have whittled down to what I consider the bare essentials. |
| #38r3gularkDec 26, 2007 14:22:24 | I will once they all go on sale. I decided the second they introduced 4ed that I'm not going to play it, so I'll just pick up some books for less than they should be. |
| #39kain_darkwindDec 26, 2007 16:31:42 | I'm not still buying 3.5, but that's because I've already bought everything. Except Complete Psionic and Cityscape, which I didn't want. |
| #40EdymnionDec 26, 2007 17:59:49 | Yes, I'm still buying both new and used 3e books. I bought Dragons of Eberron and Rules Compendium after the 4e announcement, and I'm buying used books up as fast as they show up at my local used book store. Apparently a lot of people think the books will stop working after the edition change, so I'm picking up every 3e book out there for $10-$15 each. |
| #41kain_darkwindDec 26, 2007 18:04:30 | Apparently a lot of people think the books will stop working after the edition change To be fair, many people's 3e books will stop working after the edition change. If a group switches over, you might be forced between 4e or no DnD at all, especially if there aren't a whole lot of gamers with your schedule in the area. |
| #42legdiwenaDec 26, 2007 18:17:27 | I want to buy Savage Species, but it's been hard to find to find in stores You'll probably have to find it on eBay, considering it's 3.0 |
| #43brutesquad01Dec 26, 2007 18:25:21 | There are still lots of people buying 3.5. I work at an Amazon.com warehouse, and we have tons of the stuff, and its been moving pretty good. So I don't foresee a massive abandonment of 3.5 anytime soon. |
| #44zog_jakomeDec 27, 2007 8:24:26 | There are still lots of people buying 3.5. I work at an Amazon.com warehouse, and we have tons of the stuff, and its been moving pretty good. So I don't foresee a massive abandonment of 3.5 anytime soon. I buy stuff from amazon all the time and I see stockpiles as high as 60 used books for sale. I could say I spent about $200 buying D&D supplies from amazon. |
| #45struckingfuggleDec 27, 2007 12:28:46 | I bought the RC. I haven't bought anything recently but that's not (directly) because of 4.0. I haven't bought the new stuff because nothing's really been compelling. Give us a good Complete Warrior II or something, or heck a Complete Feat because it'd be good to bring to the table, and I'd snag it. And I haven't really bought a 'new' book that was published not-recently since the MIC. But it's not because I'm going to abandon 3X. I'm just waiting for the more people to start selling their 3X books when they plan to upgrade... at which point I'll primarily be buying used books. Sorry, WotC. |
| #46cryosilverDec 27, 2007 13:45:06 | To be fair, many people's 3e books will stop working after the edition change. If a group switches over, you might be forced between 4e or no DnD at all, especially if there aren't a whole lot of gamers with your schedule in the area. I get the feeling that many groups WON"T switch over, at least not for a while. No is forcing us to go to B&N and buy 4e the day it comes out. Heck, I didn't get some of my friends playing 3e until 3 months after 3.5 came out! I like 3.5, and it's a VERY easy system to write original for. Plus, I don't really want to learn a new system unless it is worth $120+ to own. |
| #47kain_darkwindDec 27, 2007 14:11:08 | I get the feeling that many groups WON"T switch over, at least not for a while. No is forcing us to go to B&N and buy 4e the day it comes out. Heck, I didn't get some of my friends playing 3e until 3 months after 3.5 came out! Oh, I agree, and I'm certainly going to stick with 3.5. I'll be checking out the core 4e books the first day because i'm curious, but with all the changes, I think i might end up playing a 3.75 game if I adopt 4e at all. |
| #48hochiuDec 27, 2007 15:06:07 | I may complete my collection with Complete Scoundrel, and a few more choice books. I have already over a thousand dollars (I buy new) in various 3e/3.5e books, and I toned down a lot (4 books in the past 3 years, or something like that actually purchased). I'll probably pick up a few of the other books that I havent gotten, like some of the FR books, and I may look into purchasing most of Eberron, but I don't know about that. I just like having the books on hand if I really want to use them, instead on a .pdf. Otherwise, I'm done buying books until at least two or three years after 4e has been released. If that. |
| #49amethalDec 28, 2007 13:08:01 | 4th edition has nothing to do with it - I'm still sulking about the cancellation of my magazines! The only thing I've bought since then is the Rules Compendium. |
| #50Lord_DynelDec 29, 2007 18:22:02 | Has anyone touched any of the books Wotc has pumped out since 4th was announced? Yes. My FLGS actually sold out of the last five releases of 3.5 (Elder Evils, Anaurouch, Rules Compendium, Dragons of Eberron, and Emeplars of Evil), so 3.5 must be pretty highly sought after. Only thing that sucks about the above is that I'm left waiting on my copy of Elder Evils, since I took too long to get to the shop. ![]() |
| #51illithid00Dec 29, 2007 20:18:16 | I'll keep buying 3.5 until I have all of them. I don't want to convert over to 4E yet, so I'll stick with 3.5. |
| #52Lord_DynelDec 29, 2007 21:04:10 | I'll keep buying 3.5 until I have all of them. I don't want to convert over to 4E yet, so I'll stick with 3.5. Right there with ya, Illithid...right there with ya. |
| #53runestarDec 29, 2007 22:46:39 | Plan on snapping up elder evils when it finally does arrive at my local borders store. Just got book of nine swords last month. Been eying draconomicon for a very long time, but never had much reason to get it. Yet.![]() |
| #54PromDec 30, 2007 2:31:32 | I haven't bought any books recently, mostly just mini's and dungeon tiles. I would like to buy Dungeonscape, but that's about it. I do plan to play 4e, but if it turns out to be a flop will go back to 3.5. I'm not fond of the 3.5 rules, but neither do I like spending money on a new system that does not have the years of play tested that 3.5 does. Prom |
| #55thedragonmasterDec 30, 2007 3:15:44 | I've been buing 3.5 and 3.0 alike now when it's chistmas... but will take a pause now until my local gaming store starts their sales... ...the only real reason to swich to 4E that I can see would be the early lack of splatbooks (core-only makes for better roleplaying, but it kills powergaming... I like both). I will do the shift if my gaming group wants to, but I (as a DM) will keep running 3.X games for a long time (and refrain from buing 4E books for an equally long time). |
| #56Lord_DynelDec 30, 2007 7:23:03 | ...the only real reason to swich to 4E that I can see would be the early lack of splatbooks (core-only makes for better roleplaying, but it kills powergaming... I like both). That is true, but (I don't know if you DM or not) you could just limit your game to the "Core 3." I'm thinking about doing that in my next "mini" campaign (only supposed to be lasting 4 months until another 3.5 game starts). YMMV, though. :D |
| #57CmdrCorsikenDec 30, 2007 11:14:19 | Has anyone touched any of the books Wotc has pumped out since 4th was announced? Even by their standard, the last batch of books has been pretty thin. Of the books actually released since the announcement of 4e, I have only purchased Rules Compendium. As others have noted, nice handy reference! I have also purchased several ealier books since the announcement: Cityscape, Dungeonscape, MMs III to V, Races of Destiny ...Dragon ...Stone & ...Wild, Complete Champion ...Mage & ...Scoundrel. With these books, I now have all the 3.5 book I want. Although, I'm considering gathering all the 3e Forgotten Realms books, just for a different place to adventure.... |
| #58danielinthewolvesdenDec 30, 2007 11:56:59 | Rules Compendium completed my set. Same here. And, I will not be buying 4.0 for a while, either. This gives me months without a WotC purchase. Hmm.... |
| #59bughunterDec 30, 2007 15:02:35 | The last book I've bought was the Rules Compendium for the same reason as other posters. I have looked at other new releases, after seeing The Dungeon Survival Guide what a waste of money that would have been, any new book would need to have something really impressive for me to buy it. |
| #60habbalahDec 30, 2007 15:58:03 | To be fair, many people's 3e books will stop working after the edition change. If a group switches over, you might be forced between 4e or no DnD at all, especially if there aren't a whole lot of gamers with your schedule in the area. The only way a group would refuse to straight up go back to 3.5 if 4.0 made 3.5 look like a total joke. Or they were stupid and hocked all there 3.5 books next to nothing and where stuck having to play 4.0 cause their chumps. Won't that be funny? |
| #61baldwinthemercifulDec 30, 2007 19:27:00 | I started playing again in Feb of 2007, so most of my books have been purchased around the announcement of 4.0. I play in two games and DM my own campaign. I have purchased: PHB DMG MM MMV Drow of Underdark PHB II Expanded Psionic handbook Hordes of the Abyss Libris Mortis Complete Arcane Complete Warrior Complete Scroundrel Complete Adventurer Complete Divine Arms and Equipment Hereos of Battle MIC Spell Compendium UA Rules compendium I'm sure I will pick up several others in the next few weeks. I am eyeing at least three other books currently. I do not intend to switch to 4.0 nor does the the group that i game with. |
| #62dam_eht-karpDec 30, 2007 20:01:36 | I plan on buying up used and clearance copies once 4e hits proper, though I'll likely start looking now. |
| #63tetsuboDec 30, 2007 22:01:48 | I plan on buying up used and clearance copies once 4e hits proper, though I'll likely start looking now. Same here. I've been buying up any 3.5 books I don't have as I find them at a discount... The Green Ronin sale being the biggest lot recently... though my wife got me the Goodman Games Grab bag for Yule and it had some cool stuff in it... With the third party companies out there, I figure I will be buying 3.5 books for the next couple of years at least... 4E... probably the three core books and nothing else... A heads up: Building #19 in the Boston MA area is selling off D&D books at the moment. I think they are $8 each... |
| #64kuanDec 31, 2007 15:11:00 | I like 3.5 alot Thogh I do like what I am hearing about 4.0 which im sure soon after release will become 4.5 hee hee. I still buy books here and there. Just recieved Waterdeep : City of splendor, and Book of Exhalted Deeds. Gifts from my children. I will still buy them. I'll wait a while before I purchase 4.0 and let the kinks get worked out. |
| #65shadow_fox_deepwood_archeDec 31, 2007 15:33:28 | I just picked up Magic Item Compendium. Its a great book and its already inspired a couple of ideas for me. Before that I got Drow of the Underdark as soon as it was out. I dont see myself buying anymore books unless I can get a tremendous discount on them. Ive got close to $600 invested in 3.5 and between my collection and the collections of my two friends, we have all the essentials covered and a lot of frivolous concepts to boot. I do like a lot of the stuff Im seeing in regards to 4E (I pray for a fixed ranger class) but I just dont think I can jump fully on the band wagon. My group may get the essential core but after that, we just dont want to pony up the cash for more. I understand that WotC is a company and companies need to make money, but as an average joe consumer, I cant be expected to shell out boatload after boatload of money because Hasbro forced WotC to reach a quota. I want them to stay in business. I love this game. I just think, despite the problems with 3.5E, 4E came to us too soon. I felt like I was in the prime of 3.5E's life and then it was taken out behind the wood shed and shot. You can almost tell that the push for 4E sprang "out of nowhere" with their product line up for 2007. The biggest indication being the lack of a "Complete Warrior 2", the only complete to not get a sequel. |
| #66baldwinthemercifulDec 31, 2007 15:46:24 | I would have enjoyed a "Skills and Feats Compendium" IMHO that would have been a nice finishing touch on the compendium series. |
| #67malice1988Dec 31, 2007 17:24:50 | Well, I'm just starting D&D in 2008 and bought the 3.5 PH, and the group I'm going to be gaming with, and the other gamers the DM games with are all staying at 3.5 for reasons I obviously cannot yet comprehend... |
| #68alchemyprimeDec 31, 2007 17:41:58 | Um... Dragon Compendium, Green ronin's Dezzavold, Green Ronin's Advanced bestiary, Fiendish Codex I, Drow of the Underdark, and I plan on getting Underdark, Elder Evils and Lords of Madness very soon. Also plan on getting more Green Ronin books, such as Plot & Poison and some more monster books, as well as MM2, MM3, and MM5 (forget about 4...), and BOED and BOVD. Oh, and Tome of Battle, and PHB II. |
| #69kain_darkwindDec 31, 2007 19:06:04 | Um... So that's a "hell, no", then? |
| #70danielinthewolvesdenDec 31, 2007 19:53:29 | I would have enjoyed a "Skills and Feats Compendium" IMHO that would have been a nice finishing touch on the compendium series. Yes, and I would have bought a "Classes" and even a "PrC" Compendium also. |
| #71dvusDec 31, 2007 21:31:03 | I'll definitely be buying more 3.5 books as it's the version I'll be sticking with. And there are a lot more books that I want to get! More Eberron supplements and maybe another monster manual or two... who knows. Depends what goes on sale... :P D |
| #72drewskieDec 31, 2007 22:50:58 | The two fiendish codex's, elder evils, drow of the underdark, and rules compendium... those are the ones I haven't gotten yet that I want. There might be others I get as well if prices drop enough, but those are the main ones. 4e? No idea if I will be buying any of that stuff. But I know for certain I am done with the plastic minis forever. Going to start painting again... |
| #73timespikeJan 01, 2008 0:32:12 | I've bought Exemplars of Evil, Elder Evils, and the Rules Compendium. Have there been any more major releases since the announcement? By the way, if you intend to stick with 3.5, Elder Evils is pretty good. (Though I'd recommend grabbing Dungeon #135 and Using the stats for Kyuss in there instead of the ones for the Worm that Walks if you plan to do that route.) |
| #74dvusJan 01, 2008 1:17:37 | I just purchased the Tome of Battle online to add to my collection. I can't wait to get it! D |
| #75baldwinthemercifulJan 01, 2008 8:28:03 | Um... I really like MM5, I seem to use alot of it in my campaign. My current campaign is a variation and expansion of the Slaughterguard module. I've incorporated a lot of the MM5, Drow of the Underdark and Heroes of Battle into the campaign. |
| #76kraikJan 01, 2008 10:41:06 | I don't intend to touch 4.0 after seeing the races and classes book they released for it (sneak peek book) It looked alright, i must admit, but it looked too.......for lack of a better term.......world of warcraft. I can see why they would do it, don't get me wrong, big market out there with about 9 million people playing the game world-wide (1% of the population?), but i don't think it'll appeal to a lot of us that have been playing for a while, even those that have been playing for only about 2 years. But in answer of your question, to stay on topic, i have wanted to (rules compendium mostly as well as backtracking to older books that i still need) but have yet to get enough money. I think I'll still be buying 3.5 even after they release 4.0. I may see what it's like first and then pass more judgment, this is just my first impressions of it tho, so y'know, I'm not sure. -Kraik |
| #77CCSJan 01, 2008 13:33:04 | Most recently I picked up the rules compendium a few weeks back. Before that (in Sept/Oct) I added the Completes, Races of Stone, & 5 Dragonlance volumes from MWP to my shelf. And I'll get MMV, & the 3.x FRCS eventually. Plus I still have to track down a copy of Oriental Adventures.... Other than that there's a few titles like the Fiendish Codex I that if I see discounted (likely once 4th arrives) I'd buy. Will they be directly compatible with 4E? No, almost certainly not. But since I'll still be running 3.x campaigns.... |
| #78PhobosJan 02, 2008 10:55:50 | I have made a conscious effort to purchase nothing new for 3.5, and for that matter 4.0 IMO, what sucks is I was really starting to enjoy Eberron and had a group that was playing it, since the news and the projected 4.0 Eberron release, its pretty much killed any desire to purchase anything. I sure hope Keith already got paid well for his world. ![]() In fact, its been almost a month since I visited the forums, and I use to do so daily. I did take 15 minutes to fully through the 4.0 Preview of Races and Classes they had at Borders yesterday, then put it back. |
| #79linusmundaneJan 02, 2008 12:40:41 | I have most every book published for 3.5 and I will be buying anymore that come out. I will not however be buying 4e. |
| #80skarvyJan 04, 2008 10:06:16 | Is it just me or is that latest batch of Wizards of the Coast Products for DnD just a bunch of Self Promotion material that SHOULD be free Web Content(i.e. Dungeon survival guide, Races and Classes, more)? Does anyone else feel that it's wrong to charge money for Descriptions or races and classes for a game that's not even finalized yet, and will undoubtedly change? and the Dungeon Survival Guide, glad my local store doesn't wrap everything in plastic like my old store so i could see that it was nothing like i thought it was or i would have been pretty upset if i had bought it. Your thoughts? |

Your thoughts? I do not have either the dungeon survival guide or Races and classes books you mentioned in your post so I can not speak about their quality. However, I have purchased the Rules Compendium, MM V, MIC and the Drow of the Underdark, which were all published in 2007, and I have enjoyed each one. I will even say that the Rule Compendium was outstanding. |
| #82pogrom666Jan 04, 2008 11:03:33 | I'm still buying 3.5, and that is all that I will buy. I'll only be getting the 4E three core, just to see what's what, maybe splicing some of the new shizzle into my game with a big shoehorn, but ultimately I'll be playing 3.5 until 5E comes out next year. |
| #83vardockJan 04, 2008 12:45:25 | I will buy 3.5 for a long time. I will buy 3.5 as long as they make GOODbooks for it. If WotC abandons those of us who are loyal to 3.5 I will simply start buying 3.5 material form Smart 3rd party Publishers who see the market potential of a large abandoned fan-base . |
| #84vagrantwhisperJan 05, 2008 12:15:02 | 3.5 from WotC? No not much, the Rules/MI/Spell compendium's mostly. To be honest though, I saw the writting on the wall a long time ago and so streamlined/limited my WotC collection at the time to just the 3 core books, Exalted Deeds and Vile Darkness. What I have been buying though; TONS of 3.5 campaign material from 3rd party publishers, alot of which completely annihilates the content that comes out from WotC in their campaign material lately. I'm working on completing my collection of Midnight materials from Fantasy Flight Games, and I just completed Dawnforge. Freeport from Green Ronin is well done, and I'm eyeballing a Ptolus set at my FLGS. The list goes on. My group has no intention of moving to 4E and with my investment into 3rd party content we've got years and years of gaming goodness ahead of us. |
| #85tashanenJan 06, 2008 22:54:56 | Selling off my 3/3.5 collection in a fit of pique after the announcement of 4e turned out to be a mistake... so I've had to buy the extended core set and most of the FR source books, again. I suppose I've become one of the crusty old grognards. :P |
| #86sciborg3Jan 07, 2008 1:57:59 | Does anyone else feel that it's wrong to charge money for Descriptions or races and classes for a game that's not even finalized yet, and will undoubtedly change? and the Dungeon Survival Guide, glad my local store doesn't wrap everything in plastic like my old store so i could see that it was nothing like i thought it was or i would have been pretty upset if i had bought it. Your thoughts? Yeah, DSGuide is really lame. It's really for hard core collectors who like the idea of flipping through it recalling old times, or perhaps as a prelude to introducing D&D to kids. Races and Classes should have been a free pdf if for no other reason than it makes me understand the changes and while I might not agree with them its actually reasonable in some respects. (Though not always. Using the world eladrin for high elves was dumb, as is replacing celestial archons with elemental archons, but at least archon is a real word.) Of course if I had bought rather than perused it at Borders I would be rather ticked off right now for having wasted my cash. I'm actually excited about the warlock as a main class and glad to see them taking their time to rethink the sorcerer. |
| #87mothdevilJan 07, 2008 13:35:16 | I would have enjoyed a "Skills and Feats Compendium" IMHO that would have been a nice finishing touch on the compendium series. I can't figure this one out.... WOTC will spend publishing resources on "preview" books for 4.0 (honestly, how many people are actually going to buy these?!?), but the editing and time commitment for slapping together a full compendium book for feats, classes, or something has GOT to be pretty low... And it would sell like hotcakes for pretty much anyone sticking with 3.5 in some degree. It's not like they have to worry much at this point about people not buying "sandstorm" because they already have the feats in the compendium. And it's not like withholding such a book would steer the uninterested towards 4.0. Hmm... minimal development time. Higher buying certainty than "Races and Classes." Lean publishing schedule until June. Seems like a no-brainer to me.... |
| #88greg_k_dupJan 07, 2008 15:30:49 | Currently, I only own the three 3.0 core books, Unearthed Arcana, Book of Vile Darkness and a handful of third party supplements. I plan to get: WOTC Monster Manual 2 (Edit:bought) Fiend Folio (Edit:bought) Dragonomicon Fiendish Codex I Lords of Madness Heroes of Horror Stormwrack Arms and Equipment Guide Complete Warrior Complete Arcane maybe: Complete Divine, PHB2,and Magic Item Compendium (if I can find them extremely cheap (say $5 each). Also, the Rules Compendium. Non WOTC d20 Fantasy Occupations (Adamant Games) (Edit:bought) Hot Pursuit (Adamant Games) (Edit:bought) Hot Pursuit: On Foot (Adamant Games) (Edit:bought) Artificer's Handbook (Mystic Eye Games) (I own the pdf) Book of Iron Might (malhavoc) Elements of Magic: Revised (EN Publishing) (I own the pdf) Elements of Magic: Lyceian Arcana (EN Publishing) (I own the pdf) Elements of Magic: Mythic Earth (EN Publishing) (I own the pdf) Advanced Bestiary (Green Ronin) Cavalier's Handbook (Green Ronin) Noble's Handbook (Green Ronin) Complete Book of Eldritch Might (malhavoc) Book of Roguish Luck (malhavoc) Beyond Monks (Chainmail Bikinni/Goodman Games) Demon Hunter's Handbook (Goodman Games) Experts 3.5 (Skirmisher Press) Book of Templates (Silverthorne) |
| #89tetsuboJan 07, 2008 16:15:42 | I can't figure this one out.... Someone has convinced the suits that 4E is the "new shiny thing" that will save the company, make money and bake them cookies. The fans, the hobbyists that actually play the game and make them that money are not a consideration... I too would have bought a copy of that book... |
| #90squirrel_lordJan 07, 2008 16:19:23 | I went into a book buying frenzy when they announced 4th edition. My collection has tripled or more. However, I'm not going to buy any of 4th. For those of you who are debating whether or not you want to get Elder Evils, I would highly suggest it. It's just cool, and a great read. The backstories are well done, and the Elder Evils are varied. The descriptions of how they destroy the world if the PC's fail are a nice touch. One of my favorite books. |

| #92entityJan 08, 2008 13:36:38 | To the OP, no I am not buying any more 3.5 books until 4.0 is released, then I'll start buying 3.5 books to complete my collection since they will be discounted. |
| #93aleolusJan 08, 2008 14:17:33 | To the OP, no I am not buying any more 3.5 books until 4.0 is released, then I'll start buying 3.5 books to complete my collection since they will be discounted. ...They're discounted now. | #96aleolusJan 08, 2008 14:46:47 | Sorry about that, the internet is being a pain for me atm. |
| #97Archus_ForixJan 08, 2008 15:38:19 | For OP: I will buy some 3.5 stuff, but it will mainly be fluff because for me that is universal across editions as it is great to adapt ideas. I am still quite new to D&D, and even then I just bought them because I like reading them and writing stories rather than playing, so I will probably buy 4E because that will set me off for new ideas and playing D&D proper, I think, but I want some Eberron fluff because I just like reading it. Is that wrong? Am I still part of D&D if I mainly read it and not play it? |
| #98mercuriusJan 08, 2008 16:49:57 | Considering that I just started a new 3.5 campaign (character gen this past weekend), and I've picked up Tome of Magic and Magic of Incarnum to help flesh it out (still waiting on arrival...), and that there are several other 3.5 books that I wouldn't mind owning, I can say that yes, I still am buying 3.5. I pretty much have no intention at the moment of picking up 4.0, unless it literally blows my mind, and even then, I might just wait another couple of years to make sure that 4.5 isn't just going to swoop in and try to out-edition itself. I'm also considering picking up Pathfinder, though not as seriously as some titles. There's still plenty I can get out of 3.5, including books that are in print. |
| #99chaotix42Jan 08, 2008 16:56:45 | Just bought Elder Evils last week, and I plan on buying Stormreach too. Bring on 4e! :D |
| #100zacnnJan 08, 2008 18:31:09 | I just bought Complete Scoundral. |
| #101sinisJan 09, 2008 15:09:41 | No, but I rarely buy books. I do plan on picking up a few* in the very near future though. As it stands, the people I play with do not like the direction 4e is appearing to take, and don't want to give up their 3.x libraries, so I doubt I'll be seriously looking at 4e. *Books I'll pick up very soon: Heroes of Horror Libris Mortis Lords of Madness |
| #102Alter_BoyJan 09, 2008 20:36:37 | I'm thinking about getting Manual of the Planes. That seems very useful for cosmology building. My only concern is that a 4th Edition version might come out soon. However, from what I've seen, WotC seems to be treating 3rd ed books as "already there", in terms of what they can innovate on. A lot of people still have their 3rd edition Deities and Demigods, and will be less interested in updating 6 years later, as opposed to 20 years later. |
| #103kojiro_jamesJan 10, 2008 0:04:34 | My only concern is that a 4th Edition version might come out soon. LOL! |
| #104kain_darkwindJan 10, 2008 0:07:13 | I'm thinking about getting Manual of the Planes. That seems very useful for cosmology building. You're serious, aren't you? Either that or you're writing this from years in the past. Who's the President of the United States currently? No wait, that won't tell us anything. Are you looking forward to 3.5? |
| #105romtosJan 10, 2008 5:54:44 | I'm thinking about getting Manual of the Planes. That seems very useful for cosmology building. 4th edition design & delopment archive. And I just bought Elder Evils, lovely book. ![]() |
| #106danielinthewolvesdenJan 12, 2008 22:57:36 | I can't figure this one out.... I know. 99% "cut & paste", make sure all the errata is there, and maybe even write a few new clarification paragraphs on some of the Feats that have been poorly written and argued about here for years. In other words, maybe 8 hours of writing. |
| #107real_iceJan 13, 2008 6:41:56 | i am sticking to 3,5. even though new materials wont be released.. ![]() One thing i´m still going to buy is Eberron supplements. :D Go Keith Baker |
| #108gullasJan 13, 2008 6:46:28 | I guess I will be buying some 3.5 stuff![]() |
| #109tec-goblinJan 13, 2008 8:18:38 | I bought Magic of Eberron, and I will probably get Expedition to Demonweb Pits, just to fill the gaps, but that's all. No more buying until June. |
| #110minusinnocenceJan 13, 2008 18:24:40 | I wouldn't be opposed to picking up MMV on Amazon if it drops drastically in price. Were a Fiendish Codex III in the works I would have bought it as well. I know more than a few people who are actively boycotting WotC; not necessarily for 4th Edition but for the way things ended with Paizo's rights to the magazines. Short of these titles, I count myself in that category. If I were not an editor over at the D&D Archive, I would not be terribly interested even in purchasing the three Core books for 4E. But I am, so I will, and I look forward to seeing plenty of gamers at DragonCon this fall to hear what everybody thinks about the new system. |
| #111habbalahJan 14, 2008 2:02:15 | You're serious, aren't you? Either that or you're writing this from years in the past. Who's the President of the United States currently? | #112kain_darkwindJan 14, 2008 3:19:51 | Wow way to bust a guys balls for being stuborn and in 3.0. You must be reading something else, possibly on a different thread, maybe even a different board altogether, because your comment makes no sense in responding to me. I'm not busting the guy's balls, I want to know how his computer was able to communicate with ours in 2008. It is clear that the electronic glitch that allowed him to do so has not resulted in a permanent time fracture, because he has not been back to respond since. |
| #113pangalacticJan 16, 2008 18:01:18 | I for one will still be buying 3.5 products for a good long while. I'm only just getting to the point where I own all the WoTC books that interest me; I've got a list as long as my arm of third party stuff that I want to check out too. I'll be picking up the 4e PHB just to see what they've done, but as I'm still playing mostly 2nd ed. I can't see me getting to playing any time soon. I've still got all this nifty 3.5 stuff to use!![]() |
| #114the_commonerJan 17, 2008 14:56:08 | I am still buying 3.5 books. I like D&D and I don't mind buying new books. Between purchasing books at reduced prices on Amazon.com and wait to get a 30% off coupon with my Borders Rewards membership it really isn't that bad. Just bought Elder Evils. Bought Rules Comp. a month ago. Future purchases will probably be: Exemplars of Evil and City of Stormreach. What I won't buy: all the Wizards presents previews... that is like buying a catalog so I can purchase clothes (i.e. see the history of Abercrombie & Fitch)... LAME! I will and have just spent some of my Saturday reading it at Borders and then put it back on the shelf. Considering that the soonest anyone can really and truly play a 4th edition game will be July after all the 4th Core come out it really gives us a good chunk of time to keep playing 3rd Edition. The thinning out of the 3.5 material and the announcement of 4th Edition about a year ahead of time is at least better than us seeing an flood of 3.5 material and a "surprise we are releasing 4th Edition next month" approach. Really Wizards is handling this in the best way possible (except for trying to have us pay for a preview). |
| #115mcpoyoJan 18, 2008 12:16:58 | I'll be finishing out my collection of 3.5 Including all the various campaign setting stuff, I think I've got maybe 13 books in all of the 3.5 WotC line left to pick up, including all the miscellaneous splat stuff. I'd have to recount to be sure though. |
| #116bruunwaldJan 18, 2008 14:17:08 | I won't be buying 4th Ed. I won't say I never will buy a new D&D edition. As much as I don't want to, I probably will have to upgrade when my boy (now 7) hits High School or Junior High and he wants to get current with his buddies. (I am assuming that kids by then will be on 10th Edition, or whatever.) From now until then, however, I see no reason why I need another rules set. My house is filled with perfectly good, working rules from 3-and-a-half (six, if you count early versions and basic sets, etc.) versions of D&D, as well as any number of other RPGs, from Star Frontiers to Iron Crown stuff to Dead Lands, two versions of Cthulhu, the updated LoTR, and whatever else. Not to mention the few RPGs I've tooled together myself, and the many notes from times we totally winged it without any books and had the best time ever. I don't need any more ideas on how to roll dice to pretend a thing happened. I could do that asleep with one hand tied to the bedpost. That said, since my group is in agreement to continue on with the 3.5 that we had to pay through the nose to accumulate, so soon after spending hundreds on 3.0, I have been snatching up a few 3.5 books that I deem necessary. In the past month I have picked up the Spell and Rules Compendiums. Next month I will invest in one of those 3-book Core Rules boxes, with the PHB, DMG and MM, and I will leave it in the plastic for a few years, until our current books have begun to disintegrate in earnest. You could say I am preparing - stocking up - for the long, cold winter of no more new D&D. |

| #118gerryJan 19, 2008 6:25:11 | I'm getting my 10 year into DnD, along with his buddies. At Christmas, I strongly, strongly recommended to all the parents "avoid the manuals" they'll be obsolete in 6 months. Buy the Intro Starter Boxes (with the Blue Dragon!) that's a good enough start. Really! At least two of the boys now have a set of Core 3.5 rules. Ah well. I tried. And meanwhile, I'm dumping all my 2nd Ed and 3.0 stuff on eBay as fast as possible! Gerry |
| #119m-barkJan 19, 2008 12:47:51 | All but one of my books have been bought after the announcement of 4e. I bought the Draconomicon whilst on a holiday in July because it seemed interesting, got into DnD a month or so later, and bought the core books a little later. Since I've found out about 4e upon my registration here, I decided I'd just go on with 3.x. |
| #120geekazoidJan 22, 2008 15:55:04 | I have found the Spell Compendium to be a must have, and I will buy it. For the same reason, I would also buy a Feat Compendium. Outside of this, don't know if I'll buy anymore 3.5. |
| #121mergedlokiJan 23, 2008 0:29:04 | seeing as i dont plan on switching to 4E (from what i've read doesn't sound like something im remotely interested in). i'm gonna in the next month - 2 months, shell out a fair bit of cash for some 3E/3.5 stuff n just keep going w/that. havne't played in about 3 - 4 years but i got all the core stuff and FR campaign setting so jsut get some supplemental books n be good 2 go. |
| #122kthulhujrJan 27, 2008 13:00:46 | Beyond Rules Compendium, there hasn't been anything that could be considered at all substantial. Nothing has been worth a buy. |
| #123surferfreakJan 27, 2008 13:47:12 | I have recently started buying (after hearing about 4th) Recent Additions: Complete Divine, Races of the Wild, Races of the Dragon, Races of Stone. And I intend to continue buying 3.5 books for quite some time. In the just over 2 years since I've started buying books, I haven't had the time/money to purchase all the books I want. 3.5 Will continue to be played by this gamer for considerable time, not to say I won't play 4th, if I have the oppertunity. |
| #124drunken_battle_ragerJan 27, 2008 17:29:22 | wow.. i littely just got in to 3E and 3.5E this chrismas when a friend of mine got books... i was playin AD&D forever and im just getting used to this... im not buying and 4E books anytime soon, hell i dont even own any 3E or 3.5E books... althgouht i might now that prices will go down... so all in all... thank you 4E =D you made everything affordable lol:D |
| #125the_overlord_02Jan 28, 2008 6:24:03 | Still buying the remaining copies of 3.5 that aren't yet in my collection (hard covers only know, lot of the soft covers can't gain my attention). I'm playing with 5 groups in various unverses, and havan't heard of anyone who will 'upgrade' to 4 anytime soon. There are still a lot of books on collection that haven't yet been used. And most of the time we write our own adventurers and campaigns (hence the words on splatbooks). The last release of Dungeons something was a poor one indeed, only one advertise of past adventures (could refrain myself from obtaining one). Worlds and monsters (due to it's price) finds to be a welcome read. Although I was taken in thanks to its artwork, not its content (it was a moment of weakness, I know). As far as I know I'm only missing Dragons of Ebberon. Can anyone link me to a post with all 3 and 3.5 books released for DnD by WotC. Really hate the way they compile the search funtion with all novels in between. A thought on 4e. Will look nto the three core books. IF interesting enough I may buy them (probably not, because non amongst my friends intends to cross over to 4e any time soon). As a business decision I can understand their suposed move forward. From a hobbyist point of vieuw, I'd say their busines is growing out of controll. They are reaching the point (if not there allready) where they must sell a surtain volume for their business to stay afloat. Hoping that 4e will give new momentum into DnD. But I'm afraid that this one again is to soon... Just my two cents |
| #126ciaranJan 30, 2008 18:11:12 | My group intends to buy at least one 4e PH and look it over. We'll get around to playing it. Each of us has been playing for... a long time. Change will come slow. I'd like to see some more good modules for 3.5. I don't have the time I used to to for fleshing out everything. |
| #127tarasconJan 30, 2008 20:00:55 | Still buying 3.5, third party and officicial, and damn proud of it. |
| #128GlimFolkor1234Jan 30, 2008 20:52:14 | I'll be buying Stormreach, but that's about it. I won't be buying the 4e preview books...that's really a waste of money. I have 9 linear feet of DnD books and 3 linear feet of Dungeons and Dragons (magazines) (and gigabytes of pdfs). It was fun collecting the books, but this impending switch sounds so drastic that I'm pretty well convinced that very little of what's in the existing books will transfer. My existing FR campaign has been running since 2002 and probably will last at least another year. After that I think we'll probably move to Eberron. My gaming group has already made it clear that they don't intend to switch to 4e, so I'm not going to be buying any of the 4e books either. So...not buying any more 3.5e books, and not buying any 4e books... How is this change a good thing for WoTC? |
| #129catsnightmareFeb 04, 2008 19:32:05 | NOT going to switch to 4e. Bought Eberron recently with the last of my christmas money and liked what I read. But that and the Rules Compendium I got yesterday are the last I'm directly buying. So now with D&D I do just like when Shadowrun 4 edition was released. I refuse to have anything to do with 4th edition and will only buy 3rd edition books from the local used book stores, so that my money spent does not go into the publisher's coffers. |

No comment on 4e D&D (insufficient data to comment in any meaningful way; see my sig), but Shadowrun 4e is actually pretty cool. Also, FanPro is hardly the evil empire many insist WotC is. They're called FanPro for a reason; it's a bunch of fans who bought up the rights to FASA games when FASA went under. That said, if you want to keep playing 3.5 but don't want to support WotC in any way, shape, or form, buy third-party stuff. Paizo, Green Ronin, Privateer Press (if you like steampunk) and Malhavoc Press in particular are well worth your gaming dollar, at least in my experience. |
| #131JhaelenFeb 05, 2008 2:12:19 | I refuse to have anything to do with 4th edition and will only buy 3rd edition books from the local used book stores, so that my money spent does not go into the publisher's coffers. Well, chances are your money WILL go 'into the publisher's coffers' at least indirectly, since the previous owners of the used books will probably have sold their books precisely because they upgrade to 4E :D So you're financing their fresh start with a shiny new edition of the game ![]() |
| #132pogrom666Feb 06, 2008 11:03:18 | Even though I've replied to this once already, I must reply again, simply because my 3.5 collection has grown a lot in the past two months alone. I think I'm nearing the 35-40 book range, and a ton of it is Eberron centric. There's something about Eberron, I just ****ing love it. |
| #133roacFeb 06, 2008 11:44:37 | I still am. I do plan on playing at least one campaign of 4th edition and after that my play group has decided on compiling a list of 4rth edition based rules (and others) and just making a large list of house rules that we like and just play our own edition. Since it will be mainly based on 3.5 those books are soon to be at a premium for me due to every one pawning them of at ridiculously low prices just to afford new shiny books with a number 4 stamped on them. |
| #134halasterFeb 06, 2008 13:03:46 | i purchased just about every 3.5 book that came out... until 4.0 was released... then the quality of books droped off as well. rules compendium... who needs that?! |
| #135divisionbyzer0Feb 06, 2008 14:47:06 | wow.. i littely just got in to 3E and 3.5E this chrismas when a friend of mine got books... i was playin AD&D forever and im just getting used to this... im not buying and 4E books anytime soon, hell i dont even own any 3E or 3.5E books... althgouht i might now that prices will go down... I just got the damn 3.5 PHB last month, so I am still buying 3.5. Can find some cheap stuff on ebay at this point. I got the Complete Warrior for about < 6 bucks including shipping. I'd still buy and play 2nd edition but alas no one runs Dark Sun or Planscape games and that material is too expensive for me at the moment. Someone listed The Bloodwar for 0.99 and the next day it shot up to $33. I expect it will go much higher before the auction ends. |
| #136eldritch_lordFeb 06, 2008 18:56:22 | I'm still buying, if only because 3.5 prices are dropping like a fighter without a ring of feather fall. Even if I only can use them for a few months (my group wants to switch to 4e), they're good values, and I'll still play 3e occasionally even if I do "upgrade" to 4th. |
| #137utoriFeb 06, 2008 22:04:55 | 3.5 forever. It took me years to get my group to try out 3rd edition. All the players in my group had favorite characters in 2nd edition, and there was really no way to transfer a character to 3rd edition while keeping the character true to form, so there was quite a bit of resistance. Now that they have finally gotten used to 3rd and 3.5, I'm supposed to (once again)convince them to retire thier favorite characters just because the game company wants to shove another incompatible system down our throats? Even if, by some miracle, 4th edition is a better system, I still wouldn't be able to justify another change. My players have even told me they'd rather go back to 2nd edition, than lay a finger on a 4th edition book. I can't say I blame them. Besides, with the open content of 3rd and 3.5, there already exists far more resources than 4th edition will ever see printed. I believe I've spent about $1200 on 3rd and 3.5, and I haven't begun to touch the amount of content out there. Like I said, 3.5 forever. |
| #138JhaelenFeb 07, 2008 2:35:22 | rules compendium... who needs that?! Well, just about any group that spends a lot of their game time searching for certain obscure rules and is tired of it. In other words: groups like mine. ![]() I think it was money well spent - YMMV, of course. |
| #139divisionbyzer0Feb 07, 2008 2:56:42 | I remember searching for something concerning rage (I think whether you could Hide and move silent -- I read in a source online that you can) in the compendium and figured if should have had the answer, but I'm not even sure I found anything concerning rage at all and concluded it was crap. |
| #140iceyreedFeb 07, 2008 9:59:00 | 4E looks like crap! I have 55 books from 3.5/3.0, Why switch? |
| #141squabaFeb 07, 2008 17:10:46 | I'm still buying 3. books, they're cheap as hell now and there's no reason not to get some. I figure I'll do the same thing I did with AD&D when 3rd came out. Sit around talking **** about it until I pick up the books, read them, be confused and refuse to play until all my other players have read the same book. Gripe about how much I spent on 3.5, play a few 4th games, and then make the switch with occasional 3.5 fall back games for the hell of it. |
| #142JhaelenFeb 08, 2008 10:54:06 | I remember searching for something concerning rage (I think whether you could Hide and move silent -- I read in a source online that you can) in the compendium and figured if should have had the answer, but I'm not even sure I found anything concerning rage at all and concluded it was crap. It's difficult to provide a polite reply to such a comment, but I'll give it a try, nonetheless (even though I'm pretty sure it's hopeless): Sometimes it's a good idea to remember what a book is about when trying to find something in it. Looking for a description of the Geas spell in the Spell Compendium will turn up nothing, either. Because that's already covered in the PHB. The Rules compendium isn't about class features, either. Looking at the description of Rage in the PHB will tell you everything you need: While raging, a barbarian cannot use any Charisma-, Dexterity-, or Intelligence-based skills (except for Balance, Escape Artist, Intimidate, and Ride), the Concentration skill, or any abilities that require patience or concentration Neither is the RC about specific feats, spells or magic items. It's about rules (big surprise here, I guess). If a single compendium was supposed to contain all of the information you seem to expect it would have a page count approximately as large as your complete D&D collection. And what use would that be? With the Rules Compendium, I, as the DM, no longer require the PHB or the DMG during play, except for a single thing: The XP chart. |
| #14313thmarkFeb 08, 2008 14:15:45 | I'm still buying 3.5, and looking forward to the sales my local bookstores are going to have in trying to clear 3.5 from their shelves in order to make room for 4E. I'm still having loads of fun with my current campaign. I have just about all the information I need for my campaign setting (Eberron), with more books out there for me to snatch up cheaply. I just don't see the point of spending so much money on new 4E books when there's so very little wrong with 3.5. Happy Gaming everyone! |
| #144greyrazorFeb 08, 2008 15:31:52 | I am watching the updated information from WoC to see what changes they are making. I will buy 4e because I want to start teaching my kids to play. What better way to teach then to start out fresh where even I have to learn. It will bring back the memories of when you learn the rules from mistakes. But I do believe they should have given it a new name instead of D&D 4th Edition, due to the massive rule changes. Just like 3.0 and 3.5 should have been called by a different name then D&D. But as usual we will go with the ebb and flow. I also wish the WoC staff would stop putting 3.0 and 3.5 down since they wrote the darn thing. |
| #145legdiwenaFeb 08, 2008 15:45:44 | It comes down to brand recognition. |
| #146divisionbyzer0Feb 08, 2008 18:09:46 | Oh, I'm still buying: lots of books :D |
| #147moltendmFeb 08, 2008 20:33:07 | Hmm we are going to buy 4th edit as soon as it comes out, I know it may not be the best option but im beginning to think Wizards will go broke because all i've heard about 4th edit is someone saying i wont buy it ![]() Well good thing they have Magic and other things |
| #148divisionbyzer0Feb 08, 2008 21:12:11 | They say they won't but I'm sure they'll browse it at the bookstore, think it's cool, and buy it anyhow. |
| #149adidamps2Feb 08, 2008 21:55:17 | i actually went and broke open an old storage box and inventoried my old 2nd ED D&D..to my surprise i had more crap than i could remember. not only that but i miss playing in Dark sun. and i can not fathom why i even went to 3.0 or 3.5. i have more 2ed stuff than one could ever need. 3 PH 2 DMG's and enough monster manuals to haunt Satan himself, not to mention ALL the PHB option books and class/race book i own. so in other words i have shelved my 3.0/3.5 stuff, i have no intentions of purchasing 4th ed and will continue to purchase 2nd ED PDF files from a well known RPG website. the group i play with know and like 2ed better any who, so no loss on my part dusting off the books. plus i miss THAC0. |
| #150divisionbyzer0Feb 08, 2008 23:01:37 | Player's Option was sweet. I could never convince our group to adopt the full combat system from Combat & Tactics. |
| #151adidamps2Feb 09, 2008 0:22:40 | Player's Option was sweet. I could never convince our group to adopt the full combat system from Combat & Tactics. i'd have to go back through it, but if i can remember correctly it had soem awesome stuff in it regarding fighter specializations. plus i have the skills and talents one and the spells and magic one (i believe those are the names of each) hell i still have the black box basic D&D box set...the one with the fighter wielding a battle axe vs. a HUGE RED dragon. |
| #152divisionbyzer0Feb 09, 2008 10:54:51 | Skill and Powers. Yeah they were all solid books. The casting styles and spell points in spells and magic were interesting too. Channelers were kind of like sorcerers actually. |
| #153kalstrandFeb 09, 2008 13:49:07 | Well I know the reason I switched to 3E even though I have tons of 2E stuff is because the system played so much better. It doesn't matter which edition you are playing D&D is D&D. I was not going to switch to 3E simply because I had all this 2E stuff that was perfectly good, but after reading the PHB and seeing how much better the underlying system was than 2E I switched and never looked back. I will buy the 3 core 4E and if its a better system I will switch if not I'll keep playing 3.5. Either way I will probably still finish buying the rest of the 3.5 books I'm interested in. |
| #154yaeriFeb 10, 2008 7:06:05 | I just bought another two realms books. They were selling them for ⁈6 a piece. That's about 20-25% of what they're supposed to cost. :D |
| #155pale_enchantressFeb 10, 2008 17:09:11 | My money is a bit limited around the first of the year but I just reciently bought another 3.5 book and there are still several such books I'm quite interested in. As far as 4.0 I do not plan on switching until it's been out for at least a year. One of the things that upsets me most about the coming of 4.0 is that 3.5 has been out long enough that we are really able to get some interesting and esoteric niche books. (Book of the Nine Swords is a perfect example) When 4.0 comes out the first book releases are going to probably just cover the vanilla standards. Also I'm not thrilled about some of the cosmology changes they are making. Short answer, yes im still buying 3.5 books |
| #156baldwinthemercifulFeb 11, 2008 18:48:04 | Well, just about any group that spends a lot of their game time searching for certain obscure rules and is tired of it. In other words: groups like mine. I agree. The Rules Compendium was best book in quite a while. |
| #157harleydudeFeb 11, 2008 19:18:35 | I just ordered Complete Champion from amazon. There are still a couple of books that I need to add to my collection, races of dragon comes to mind, but one at a time will suffice. I also asked our DM if we would be switching to 4e. He said not for a while, a long while. So we are still on 3.5 and will be for some time yet. HD |
| #158adgramaineFeb 11, 2008 19:43:29 | Short answer: yes. I, like so many others, have added quite a few books from Amazon and eBay these past few weeks. In months past, I might have been relegated to purchasing a RPG book once every other month. In these past few weeks alone, I have snagged four WotC books, and three non-WotC ($8 for Midnight?!?). But I am a collector of RPGs. I enjoy reading as much as I enjoy playing. I'll buy any book that grabs my attention, even if large swaths of the book do nothing more than cut large swaths in the forests of the planet... If I like it, it will be assimilated. None are safe. |
| #159ArtifactFeb 11, 2008 22:41:34 | I bought Elder Evils as a sort of "capstone" to my D&D 3e collection. It treats these baddies as endgame encounters, which seems appropriate. I may even pick up Exemplars of Evil (eventually), which would make a nice companion piece. The only 3e books I don't have then, are these: Rules Compendium (Elder Evils makes a better capstone) Exemplars of Evil (would make a nice companion to Elder Evils) Monster Manual IV Monster Manual V Lords of Madness Frostburn (cold) Sandstorm (hot) Stormwrack (wet) Heroes of Battle Heroes of Horror Miniatures Handbook Dungeon Master’s Guide II Mysteries of the Moonsea Dragons of Faerun Shinning South Corymyr: The Tearing of the Weave Grand History of the Realms (gotta get this one soon) Expedition to the Demonweb Pits (I dislike the Delve format )Ruins of Undermountain (too bad its here to stay :rolleyes ![]() Ruins of Greyhawk Drow of the Underdark (Mongoose Publishing did it better) Complete Champion Eberron books (I've got the Campaign Setting) |
| #160ridgerunnerFeb 11, 2008 23:41:01 | My local bookstore has been selling 3.5 books for $14.99 (brand new) so I have been picking up Eberron books I don't have. I went from having only 2 Eberron books to 7 now. I'm waiting for Drow of the Underdark, Elder Evils and Monster Manual 5 to appear on those shelves and I'll snatch those up. I'm not too interested in fourth edition right now. I've played D&D for almost 25 years and it seems fourth edition is targeting a different demographic. I see the start of 4th edition as a chance to complete my 3.5 set. |
| #161dropsonexistanceFeb 12, 2008 2:24:32 | I actually have more incentive to buy them now, as most of the members of our group aren't eager to switch over right away. It'll take a while to learn the rules well enough to play intuitively (who likes poking through multiple books every time they try and do something?), so we'll be on 3.5 for a while yet. However, they are excited... so I'll let them spend the cash to buy the books, and then borrow. No biggie... As for me, I picked up a used copy of Draconomicon for $27, regular CDN price $54.99, and Rules Compendium at 10% off CDN cover (so, roughly American cover. The places I buy from are either selling off 3.X like that, or at straight American prices, so I figure now, if ever. Plus, the Draconomicon is just such an awesome book in general if you love dragons, and detail. You know how dragons see, hear, think, breathe, walk, fly, and breathe fire, among all other things, and all with some of the best illustrations of all DnD books I've ever seen - as in, pretty much all of them. I also find it's a great way to get people interested in the game, because dragons are so universal, as is art, that they naturally start asking questions about the technical aspects on their own. Okay, I'll shut up now :P |
| #162baldwinthemercifulFeb 12, 2008 12:13:49 | In the last three weeks I have added: Draconomicon, Stormwack, and I purchased my first two FR books: FR Campaign setting, FR Shining south. I would still like to add elder evils and exemplar of evil, then pick up FR Waterdeep and other FR books. I have no intention of switching over to 4.0 (at least for another year or two), so I will continue to fill in my 3.5 gaps. |
| #163legdiwenaFeb 12, 2008 12:23:29 | Might wanna get the Forgotten Realms' Player's Guide, it updates FRCS to 3.5. |

Buying only is almost universally cheaper than buying from a retailer. I got the draconomicon for 6 bucks including shipping considering it was part of a 26 book lot that i snagged for $150 :D |
| #165cool_dude1010Feb 12, 2008 22:42:29 | 3.5? Psh, what a fad. You guys will be crawling back to AD&D once you realize how superior THAC0 is. You're a nerd! |
| #166divisionbyzer0Feb 12, 2008 22:50:10 | How is thac0 superior? It seems mechanically equivalent to me, only they changed the rate of progressions. |
| #167sirsalmonFeb 13, 2008 15:50:55 | I can't wait for 4th edition to come out just because all of the 3.5 books will go down in price. I'm not ready to move on to 4e so think of all the money I'll be saving on massively discounted 3.5 books! |
| #168lordlongshadowFeb 15, 2008 22:34:02 | Is it just me or is that latest batch of Wizards of the Coast Products for DnD just a bunch of Self Promotion material that SHOULD be free Web Content(i.e. This is the Key!! WoTC are counting on the people who would buy books they can't even use (DUH!!) to sellout the 4.0 core books. |
| #169ganeldilFeb 19, 2008 12:41:31 | Buying everything 3.0/.5 OGL D20 I can get my hands on. It has to last me the rest of my days The good news is that there is enough of it for that. |
| #170timespikeFeb 20, 2008 8:34:15 | As far as 4.0 I do not plan on switching until it's been out for at least a year. (Book of the Nine Swords is a perfect example) When 4.0 comes out the first book releases are going to probably just cover the vanilla standards. The interesting thing is; Book of Nine Swords is very much a preview of 4.0. In fact, according to one of the preview books, it's actually a bunch of 4.0 combat rules retrofitted for 3.5. So the "vanilla" that comes out with 4.0 may be more to your liking than you think. I'm on the fence about the new edition myself, but that one aspect is something I know I like. |
| #171harmassassinFeb 20, 2008 11:56:07 | Personally, I'm not spending one penny on anything v3.5, not much point. Once v4 comes out it will only be a matter of time before I and those I play with switch over. But have you noticed that since announcing the coming of v4, they've been pumping out books like there's no tomorrow hoping to squeeze every last penny out of people? And the amazing part is that people actually KEEP BUYING THEM. lol Not me. |
| #172JhaelenFeb 20, 2008 15:24:29 | But have you noticed that since announcing the coming of v4, they've been pumping out books like there's no tomorrow hoping to squeeze every last penny out of people? Actually, no, I haven't noticed anything of that kind. Subjectively, I had the impression the number of releases went down - but that's probably only, because there were not as many supplements I've been interested in. In fact, I'm sure, if you examine the product catalogues of the past couple of years, you'll find that the number of releases has been pretty constant. |
| #173zombiegleemaxFeb 20, 2008 17:27:57 | I am still buying 3.5 books (I got a late start), but I haven't purchased a "new release" ever since the Complete Scoundrel. I ordered the Expanded Psionics Handbook at my local hobby shop the other day. :P Most of the newer books I've seen are either prebuilt campaign settings (which I never use) or villain books (which I don't use either.) |
| #174QubeFeb 21, 2008 7:28:39 | nope. I'm saving up for DMG/MM/PHB from 4th edition: I have many high hopes |
| #175drackthorFeb 22, 2008 0:47:01 | I just got back into 3.5 a few months back after being into it a year & a half (maybe a little less) ago, so to blazes with 4.0, I'll be with 3.5 for quite a while. Also, Amazon selling some of it's DND books that are in 'Condition - Like New' for 2.75 USD sits just fine with me. :D |
| #176divisionbyzer0Feb 22, 2008 3:52:19 | I just got back into 3.5 a few months back after being into it a year & a half (maybe a little less) ago, so to blazes with 4.0, I'll be with 3.5 for quite a while. This means I'll prolly be buying more books. :D |
| #177weyrleaderzorFeb 22, 2008 19:51:12 | I have. And I intend to buy more if more good ones come out. I totally agree! I've bought most of mine through http://www.biblio.com and have gotten most of them at great prices (a lot better than cover price)! As for D&D:WOWWE... Nah, I don't plan on getting it. If I wanted a very miniatures-centric game I'd play War Hammer, and if I wanted to play World of Warcraft, I would go buy it and play it. I have no desire to play WOW on the tabletop with miniatures... I play D&D for the teamwork, the camaraderie, the social interaction with friends, and the shared experience of the heroic exploits of heroes like you read in Tolkien... But the book pales in comparison when you get to share the adventure with your friends and everyone has a part to play in it! That's why I play the game - Not for "powers," not for "flashy effects," not for big numbers and massive totals of damage and big bonuses to die rolls just to feel like I've got an uber-powerful character, not to play the all-too-common atypical 'evil' paladin, nor the 'demon-blooded loner bad-@55'... Those are things without substance and without effect on the overall spirit of the game, they are just mechanics. And the evil/bad guy points; They, by being evil and the nature of evil, are anti-social and anti-teamwork (evil never works well together). On that note: If I wanted to be in a setting where I was being cautious for someone around me stabbing me in the back or filching something from (or pulling something over on me) all for their own gain... I'd go to work in some commissions-based job with a bunch of other salesmen all wanting each and every sale to ensure they could keep a roof over their head. Yes, I am buying 3.5 when I find something that's interesting to me and at a price I don't feel is the proverbial "bend over and take it." |
| #178dictionarydotcomFeb 23, 2008 0:17:52 | I bought Exemplars of Evil and Elder Evils since 4.0 was announced. Considering the lack of quality in either book, I've decided to stop buying new 3.5 books, it's obvious that WoTC doesn't care anymore. I'll just go and find the older books that I don't have for cheap. |

| #180skrap-sanFeb 23, 2008 4:00:49 | I can't wait to pick up Stormreach out this month. I second that, although it will be my last, and I will have to wait for it to find me in the cold cold north. |
| #181catseyeFeb 24, 2008 5:51:58 | Still need the Draconomicon, Libris Mortis and a 3.5 Monster Manual II. Pity that last one doesn't exist. - ![]() |
| #182sakuradmFeb 24, 2008 12:24:30 | it would be nice for 4th edition to be out soon, just to add to my collection... :D i still use version 1 and 2... i mix my campaigns using bits and pieces of all the versions.. (well i did with one campaign) and it worked nicely.. |
| #183badger3kFeb 24, 2008 14:36:39 | Yeah - plan on getting the few Eberron and Forgotten Realms books I am missing (when I can afford them). Since these will probably be the last D&D products I will ever buy, I am trying to complete my final collection of gamebooks. City of Stormreach is a definite, since my party will be going there the next time we can game. |
| #184holygrenadefrenzyFeb 26, 2008 14:33:59 | Yes, if you are talkig about the products of "other" compaines useful products as well that is. There are a few thing I need from WotC yet not too many things to complete. I do find it very humorous that WotC and Hasbro has pulled a TSR move though by selling the little preview pamplets for 4e. I remember that Silver Grey first of the slick covers catalog by TSR back in the day and consider their doing this pamplet thing a bad omen. |
| #185drewskieFeb 26, 2008 14:48:46 | Yes, if you are talkig about the products of "other" compaines useful products as well that is. And the monster manual will be a ringed binder with loose leaf sheets... |
| #186mad_mickelsonFeb 26, 2008 15:10:20 | -Not Spending a cent on 4th edition, I'm still in the middle of rounding up all the 3ed and 3.5 books, got about another $800 to spend or so, the prices have dropped at least 75% from RRP so I'm quite happy. -To be honest I switched off after dragon and dungeon mags got lopped off the face of the earth. -And the fact that there is more than enough 3rd edition material to last me and my group years to come. |
| #187EdymnionFeb 26, 2008 15:54:22 | And the monster manual will be a ringed binder with loose leaf sheets... All the better for the scanner! :P |
| #188angry_elfFeb 26, 2008 18:33:20 | I've still got plenty of 3.x stuff to buy, and I will continue to buy 3.X books for quite a while. Maybe I'll pick up the 4th edition books along the way just to see what's in it. |
| #189divisionbyzer0Feb 28, 2008 19:24:24 | Probably gonna win complete adventurer for around 5 bucks. |
| #190evilcouchFeb 28, 2008 23:18:39 | I can't wait to pick up Stormreach out this month. I second that, although it will be my last, and I will have to wait for it to find me in the cold cold north. You bet. Fluff books are all I've been buying lately. Just picked up a bunch of Eberron setting books for about 5 bucks a piece. Booksellers desperately trying to shift 3.5 books before 4.0 hits shelves can be a blessing for those able to find good deals on material that's unlikely to go obsolete. |
| #191runestarMar 01, 2008 5:29:53 | Finally got around to picking up elder evils yesterday. :D Will probably get MIC if I can find it. Why can't borders release their 30% discount coupons in tandem with new book releases... ![]() |
| #192apollyonschosenMar 01, 2008 17:36:32 | I doubt if i will get to complete my collection before 4th ed rolls around. But i did recently buy MM2,The Complete Arcane,Fiendish Codex2,and an adventure module.....i will continue to buy 3.5 long after the new edition drops, but don't get it twisted.I WILL buy 4th ed ,just so i don't get left behind and who knows they may just get it right this time. |
| #193fenrir_greybackMar 01, 2008 18:09:57 | I don't plan on buying 4th ed. Period. 3.5 works just fine, and I don't see a need to but brand new fifty dollar books, when (once 4th comes out) I'll be able to buy probably brand new, or almost new books for like 5 bucks. Plus, gnomes are cool. You can't just make them non-PHB races. |
| #194tigerwolfeMar 01, 2008 21:08:36 | 3.5? Psh, what a fad. You guys will be crawling back to AD&D once you realize how superior THAC0 is. THAC0 yummy those were the days |
| #195AmarilMar 03, 2008 14:18:54 | Dragons of Eberron, Rules Compendium, Races of the Wild, Races of Destiny, and Races of Stone have all been purchased I made since 4e was announced. I also plan to purchase City of Stormreach. I thought I'd add to my first post in this thread. I've pretty much completed my library of D&D books, and have recently purchased some Dreamscarred Press PDFs for additional psionic content. The only books I have on any sort of v3.5 wishlist are Miniatures Handbook, which is out of print, Tome of Battle, which I can't honestly decide if I will use or not (yet another system to learn), and Monster Manual V, in which I have a hard time getting interested. Complete Champion is an extremely low priority item and is only on the list for the sake of being a completionist, which I cannot honestly justify. Here's my library of WotC books: Show
There are some others, but they weren't worth noting for the purposes of this thread (e.g. - D&D Gazetteer, Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, adventure modules, etc.). |
| #196corvwynMar 03, 2008 19:33:26 | Meh. I've still got some 3.5 books I want to buy. I never buy books with rule mechanics though, I'm not interested in that. I just buy books like Lords of Madness or books with Geographical info/history. I'm getting very sceptical about 4th edition with every new information I see. Too many strange additions and "improvements" because someone supposedly had problems with it. I'm going to play 3.5 for a good while still. |
| #197apollyonschosenMar 06, 2008 17:24:23 | Just picked up Heroes of Horror and PHB2.Am buying as much of the stuff i really want as i can before it becomes hard to find. And it's a good excuse to buy lots of stuff.... |
| #198catzillaMar 07, 2008 14:35:58 | About a week and half after 4e was announced, I went on a mini shopping spree to round out my rather minimalist 3.5 collection (Core, plus UA, PHB2, DMG2, SC, MIC and the Monster books). My one guidline was that I wouldn't spend more than $10 on any single item. My last pickup was MM5 in September. Haven't dropped a copper since. |
| #199AmarilMar 07, 2008 14:50:14 | About a week and half after 4e was announced, I went on a mini shopping spree to round out my rather minimalist 3.5 collection (Core, plus UA, PHB2, DMG2, SC, MIC and the Monster books). My one guidline was that I wouldn't spend more than $10 on any single item. My last pickup was MM5 in September. Haven't dropped a copper since. Is that because you don't want to spend more on 3.5 but still plan to play 3.5 or is it because you plan to switch to 4e? |
| #200catzillaMar 07, 2008 17:27:59 | Is that because you don't want to spend more on 3.5 but still plan to play 3.5 or is it because you plan to switch to 4e? My group and I plan to stick with 3.5 for the foreseeable future. Between us, we have an awful lot of 3.0/3.5 books sitting on our shelves. The books I bought had been on my radar for awhile. When I saw how quickly 3.5 prices were dropping after 4e's announcement, I set a price point and started watching Amazon and eBay. I grabbed the books I wanted when the price was right, and haven't been compelled to buy anything since. I've become pretty neutral in the 3.5 vs 4e debate. I'll pickup the 4e core books if the new system impresses me. However, the way the whole transition has been handled has left a sour taste in my mouth (two words: Teaser Video), so it's highly unlikely that I'd buy anything beyond those. |
| #201drakkonflyeMar 14, 2008 23:31:32 | Still looking for those last few 3.5 books myself, in the vain hope that I will eventually find a game to use them in. Every so often, I get lucky, like finding a new copy of Champions of Ruin (yes, technically it's 3.0) online for less than 50 cents, plus S&H (they always get you with the S&H). At that price, yeah, I'll grab it up, especially since I will not be buying any more WotC D&D books after I finish filling out my 3.5 collection. I absolutely refuse to play 4th Ed. IMO, there was nothing seriously wrong enough with 3.5 to merit revamping the entire game system, especially when the new system just encourages munchkinism and hack-and-slash combat. That's what video games are for. ![]() Sorry for that, but it just ticks me off that I won't be seeing 3.5 books for Kara-Tur, Dragonreach, Maztica, Al-Qadim, the Moonshaes, etc. ![]() Now, if they were to come out with regional sourcebooks without loading them down with statblocks and excessive strictly 4.0 material, well...I might reconsider. Maybe. |
| #202raxxmanMar 24, 2008 10:47:15 | 3.5? I'm still buying OD&D stuff when I can get it ![]() |
| #203zuxiusMar 27, 2008 17:16:50 | I guess I have no need to buy 3.5 anymore because I was one of those completist freaks that already has everythig they made. I will be buying the last Eberron picture book and then exclusively buying just Dungeon Tiles. I will buy Star Wars RPG and minis but I am too vested in 3.5 to just throw it over my shoulder. I was one of their best buyers, now I will be one of their worst purely because they switched gears on me leaving years of books invalidated. I cannot rationally justify switching after all this. However, I will still continue buying 3.5 products, but they won't be from WotC. What a pup Paizo turned out to be. The WotC people took the dog out into the woods with a gun pointed to its head, and the thing ran off before they could shoot it. And as they started to head back to their car, the thing jumped out at them like some ravenous beast gone feral and literally bit the hand that fed them. Now the thing is out there breeding a whole pack of mutant 3.5 products which will certainly come back to bite even harder. I am a Paizo guy now because I bought so diligently from WotC. What choice was I left with? YOU BET I AM GOING TO CONTINUE TO BUY 3.5! Tallyho! Zux |
| #204ramzcaMar 27, 2008 20:18:46 | Eh, I still buy 3.5. I need to get M.M. IV to complete my moster manuals >.> |

MMIV isn't bad but its not good either sadly IMO >.< Yes, we're still going to buy 3.5 edition books. In my grouping of players we came to the conclusion that we didn't want to waste are time with 4e with all the 3.5 books we own. |
| #206catzillaMar 28, 2008 13:31:01 | In my grouping of players we came to the conclusion that we didn't want to waste are time with 4e with all the 3.5 books we own. That's the course my group decided to take as well. |
| #207ForgemberMar 28, 2008 13:43:41 | I'm dropping 3.5 like a bad habit, sold most of my books already and can't wait to get a fresh start with 4e. |
| #208aleolusMar 28, 2008 13:44:39 | Hasn't Wizards said that they're going to allow people to legally download 3.5 books once 4th comes out? Or somewhere around there, at least |
| #209archmage0271Mar 29, 2008 21:56:32 | I just purchased Exemplars of Evil a few weeks ago. SO I guess I am still buying 3.0/3.5 books. Howerver, I wonder if Wizards is going to put out a conversion manual for 4.0 the same as they did for 3.0? I would rather try to convert my characters and monsters rather than buy aalot of material I may not need or use. How much longer are ppl going to play 3rd when 4th hits the stores? |
| #210JhaelenMar 30, 2008 5:18:55 | Howerver, I wonder if Wizards is going to put out a conversion manual for 4.0 the same as they did for 3.0? Probably not going to happen. They've already said that there's no formulaic way to convert characters from 3E to 4E. However it should be easy to convert them thematically. For everything they've released since announcing 4E they'll also create conversions via D&D Insider. Finally I am pretty sure we'll see fan-created conversions of the best 3E material in no time. Heck, over at ENWorld they've already started doing this! There are 4E versions of 'The Burning Plague' and 'The Sunless Citadel'. How much longer are ppl going to play 3rd when 4th hits the stores? My current plans are to first finish my current campaign using 3E rules. So, I'll switch over in mid to end of 2009 at the earliest. Since I have a strong dislike for anything related to the 'Forgotten Realms', I also want to wait till the 4E Eberron Campaign Setting is available. Then I'll decide if I use Eberron for my next campaign or a home-brew based on the default Points-of-Light 'setting'. I am going to encourage my players, though, to have a try at DMing 4E as soon as it's available (in German). After three years of DMing I would really like to be a player again at least part of the time. |
| #211michaelkMar 30, 2008 8:12:41 | I want to, but I haven't had a day off in the last week so I can't make it to the FLGS while they're open. Really want to grab a copy of the rules compendium and I might see something else good. |
| #212vardockMar 30, 2008 14:11:26 | I will buy 3.5. I will not buy 4.0. If I want to play a WOW type game. I would Play WOW. 4.0 is table top WOW. And Is thereby Blasphemy Against true D&D. |
| #213archmage0271Mar 30, 2008 22:17:05 | My current plans are to first finish my current campaign using 3E rules. So, I'll switch over in mid to end of 2009 at the earliest. Do you plan to sell any of your 3.0/3.5 books as soon as you switch to 4.0? I have over 30 3.0/3.5 books right now and alot of the AD&D books from the late 70's early 80's. Have no real plans to sell then. Just Wonderring how other ppl feel about their books? |

I have yet to sell a single rpg book. I still own lots of AD&D 1E and 2E books and have no intention of selling any of them. At least the 2E books still see regular use, mainly for background information. I do have an intention to buy a new bookshelf in the near future though, since things have started piling up ![]() |
| #215michaelkMar 31, 2008 10:30:53 | I've traded books with friends but wouldn't ever sell a book. Sell... books... that's just weird. |
| #216Lord_DynelMar 31, 2008 10:56:14 | I'm not buying any official 3.5 stuff, as I have all I want to buy from WotC - which is every non-campaign specific book. One expception is Races of Eberron, which by the looks of it, WotC wanted get the Eberron races out into the non-campaign specific pool. I also want to pick up Anauroch adventure, and that will complete my 3/3.5 FR colection. I have been picking up some 3rd party stuff though. I picked up all the Pathfinder modules, a few DCC modules, GM Gems (from Goodman Games - nice little idea book for DMs), and I'm picking up the Gazetteer of the Known Realms (also Goodman Games) today - and I hope its worth the $70 price tag. |
| #217GnarlMar 31, 2008 12:41:53 | I'm dropping 3.5 like a bad habit, sold most of my books already and can't wait to get a fresh start with 4e. What percentage of the original price do you manage to get out of the books? Where are you doing that? It sounds like a nice idea :D. |
| #218deathlessjuanMar 31, 2008 19:25:29 | I'm still buying 3.5 as I still do not own every offical book. I find nothing wrong with 3.5 that cant be solved with a little DM intervention and I am always up to the task. I'll buy 4E when I am good and tired of 3.5E (if ever) |
| #219archmage0271Mar 31, 2008 20:12:49 | I do have an intention to buy a new bookshelf in the near future though, since things have started piling up My wife has seen enough of me buying book shelves to hold my books. I currenttly house them in 4 book shelves I bought from walmart. However they take up alot of room in the LR. But atleast my wife does not grip as much as I whine about her dolphins. LOL! I sold my set of 3.0 core books as soon as I bought the 3.5 core. Sold them on ebay for 10 bucks apiece. Sad to say but they were in mint condition as I treat my books like gold. Why shouldn't I, I paid over 30 bucks for them. |
| #220catzillaApr 01, 2008 11:20:34 | I have over 30 3.0/3.5 books right now and a lot of the AD&D books from the late 70's early 80's. Have no real plans to sell then. Just Wondering how other ppl feel about their books? I've donated quite a few books to the library. They were the ones that I was hardly ever cracking open. I figured I might as well share the wealth. If I really feel the need for one of my old books, I can check it out, copy down the info I want, and turn it back in for others to use. The tax write off was an added bonus. ![]() |
| #221pandapeepApr 02, 2008 3:25:08 | I can't wait for the mass selling and/or sales of 3.5 books in the coming months so for pennies on the dollar I can fill holes in my collection. I've already scored a few useful ebberon books from half price and will be checking back there often. |
| #222AmarilApr 02, 2008 15:29:09 | Hasn't Wizards said that they're going to allow people to legally download 3.5 books once 4th comes out? Or somewhere around there, at least You can already legally download most of them from RPGNow.com. It's unfortunate that they are cover price. I'm hoping the prices will drop to $5 like their other out-of-print edition PDFs. |
| #223runestarApr 04, 2008 23:11:35 | There are actually quite a few books containing material I would like to have, but the problem is that for each book, it is typically something like 20% wow!, the rest um...so I do not feel that it is really worth my money to pay full price for just a few effective pages (as are my sentiments with books like complete mage, scoundrel, divine, races of stone).![]() |
| #224jaxgaretApr 05, 2008 1:48:45 | In my grouping of players we came to the conclusion that we didn't want to waste are time with 4e with all the 3.5 books we own. That's the course my group decided to take as well. Thirded. They want no part of 4e. |
| #225Lord_DynelApr 05, 2008 8:02:48 | Thirded. They want no part of 4e. “Fourthed” (if thats a word :D ). Here's an interesting tidbit from my corner of the world. Out of my gaming group (there's six of us), only one person has mild interest in 4e. And He's not even willing to invest money in the system - he's just curious to what all the changes will be. At my FLGS, the assistant manager (who's a good friend of mine) has revealed to me that he's only ordering two copies each of the PHB, the MM, and the DMG because no one has asked him to get any in, no one's preordered it, and none of the people he's asked, who play D&D, have ay interest in buying it. The same aforementioned manager runs a D&D game with 7 players (eight total in his group). No one has any interest in his group. It's kind of baffling. Yeah, I'm still buying 3.5, and will continue until I've got everything I want. Been looking into some of the Mythic Vistas stuff from Green Ronin, at the moment. ;) |
| #226fighter1Apr 05, 2008 8:43:09 | I totally agree - same with my group and everyone I have talked to including the local gaming shops. There is little or no interest in v4.0. The main reasons given by players and DM's I talked to is (in no particular order): A. That they do not think v3.5 needs to be replaced anytime soon - it ain't broken. ![]() B. Financially; we all spent a lot of cash over the past few years building up v3.5 libraries and the like. Not that we can't afford the switch (my group is all 30 something professionals with good careers); it’s the point of it along with reason A. ![]() C. Even if we did will WoTC pull another ".5 conversion" on us in a year or so? Probably. ![]() D. Everyone knows v3.5 these days (those that don't never will at this point). Why flip systems then not be able to get new players or DM's if you need them? ![]() E. The principle of the thing: v2.0 NEEDED to be changed - the v3.0/v3.5 system certainly does not. Sure there are issues - but no gaming system is perfect. In v3.5 you can work around these with ease. ![]() F. What does v4.0 offer me that I can't get in v3.5? It seems that v4.0 offers me some out of game advantages and fewer in game. In v3.5 I can do almost anything with a character; feats, skills, multi-classing. :lightbulb G. Finally: 4.0 seems like a total change - which means that everything I have right now is useless in 4.0. This includes ideas, thoughts, PC's including the aforementioned materials ![]() ------------------------ The couple of gaming shops (we have like 2 in a 50 mile radius) is that: Few have asked and those that have were more like "Your not going to get any of that 4.0 stuff in are you?". They said that if anything the v4.0 bit has increased their v3.5 a great deal. :D ----------------------- My friends and I honestly think 4.0 will be a flop - like "New Coke". It might attract the newer players who are just starting out since they don't know anything else but these new people will be most likely playing with more experienced ones at first that won't flip. So maybe in the long run it works out for them but in the short run I highly doubt it. Hopefully executive ego will not get in the way of scraping v4.0 or at least changing to a totally different animal like a new rule compliment (such as so many v3.5 books have like Unearthed Arcana, Book of 9 swords, etc; supplementary rules). And by the way I OWN THESE! Hasbro got my money! Its v3.5 why would I not buy it? :lightbulb The only advantage I can see with 4.0 is the online stuff (that I admittedly know very little about). But online is highly competitive with all the games out there (that are already VERY well established) and why could the same friggin thing not be done with v3.5? ![]() We love the game and if they kept producing v3.5 stuff we'd keep buying it. If they put v3.5 online we'd use it. If the created a new campaign setting we'd buy it and play it. :angelhide |
| #227Thanatos-OmegaApr 05, 2008 20:10:40 | I had a V3.5 group once 4E was announced all 7 of us dropped WOTC like a bad habit. None of the FLGS' In my area are gonna carry more then like 2 copies of the books, least going by the folks there and the two owners I'm close to. Active games held at the shops is also nonexistent of late. I used to recruit youngsters and new guys and girls from attending those sessions. lately nothings been going on. ![]() I'll admit I hate to admit I poured money into this to keep my books varied and extensive for my team now I'm selling em all off - check the sig- to try and regroup my losses. we have since switched to White wolf's Scion game and have not sunk one penny into anything WOTC nor will we in the future. ![]() |
| #228pindanin01Apr 05, 2008 22:03:13 | I have bought 3.5 stuff since the announcement. I will be buying the complete 4th set when they come out. |
| #229baldwinthemercifulApr 06, 2008 8:55:18 | Since I started gaming again 14 months ago, I have purchased 25 WoWC books (and several modules and numerous minis) and, with the exception of the Expanded Psionics, use them all regularly. Neither my groups (three of them) that I game in or myself intend to purchase 4.0. I have downloaded and begun testing the alpha version of Paizo's upcoming system. Verdicts still out on it but it seems like it could fill the gap WoWC is self creating. Especially, if WoWC fails to release new 3.5 material and eventually takes their current material out of print. I will continue to purchase WoWC books until I have filled in a few missing holes in my collection (roughly a half dozen or so books). So ultimately, they will continue to receive some of my money in the near future but eventually those gaming dollars will be spent on third party vendors. |
| #230baldwinthemercifulApr 06, 2008 9:37:17 | I actually just purchased Frostburn, Players Guide to Faerun, and Expedition to Undermountain from Amazon. In looking at other items I would like there really is only a couple things: Elder Evils, Sandstorm, and the Demonwebs module. As WoTC has the countdown clock, I suppose I have my own too...countdown to last dollars spent with WoWC. |
| #231lord_zackApr 06, 2008 10:16:23 | Yes I am. I just got all the Races of books yesterday. I think they'll be useful to me for both 4e and Pathfinder. I'll of course be able to use my 3.5 stuff with Pathfinder with some modifications, but It'll probably give me ideas for my 4e campaigns as well. I'm also ignoring most of the new fluff so I'll mine my old books for fluff as well. |
| #232michaelkApr 06, 2008 11:43:44 | Just bought rules compendium, the dragon compilation and a 3.5 copy of the MM (didn't have one). |
| #233draakaApr 10, 2008 14:30:54 | I hope to pick up every 3.5 book I don't have yet. I won't be buying any 4.0, maybe the figures, but just because they look cool and can still be used with 3.5. None of my group want to upgrade as we have all spent a ton of cash on 3.5 books in the last two years, and if I am playing any 4.0 game that I'm not DMing then I won't really need any books anyway as there will always be a copy of everything laying around the table anyway. |
| #234madblizaApr 10, 2008 15:59:24 | My group has decided to wait. In short the general decision was, "Let's treat 4.0 like Windows and wait till the bugs get fixed". It worked the last time. We converted to 3.5 without wasting money on the 3.0 books just by being patient. |
| #235kurskApr 10, 2008 17:42:24 | My group has decided to wait. In short the general decision was, "Let's treat 4.0 like Windows and wait till the bugs get fixed". I don't think they will do a 4.5. They'll probably just issue splat books that gradually change the rules (like the rules encyclopedia?). |
| #236divisionbyzer0Apr 10, 2008 18:51:33 | What percentage of the original price do you manage to get out of the books? Depends on the book. Just do an ebay search. I see books going for 15-25 all the time, sometimes cheaper, sometimes a bit more. I got the complete warrior for 99 cents. It depends on the book and numerous other random factors. |
| #237divisionbyzer0Apr 10, 2008 19:33:30 | I had a V3.5 group once 4E was announced all 7 of us dropped WOTC like a bad habit. WHy sell the stuff you already had though? I mean, wiht your material you had plenty enough variability for countless sessions and campaigns. |

| #239kurskApr 11, 2008 16:48:28 | Has anyone seen bookstores lowering the prices at all on 3.5 stuff? I checked 4 Barnes & Noble stores and they had NO stock. Might try online. |
| #240divisionbyzer0Apr 11, 2008 17:38:23 | I might check the closest Borders. |
| #241kurskApr 11, 2008 17:41:18 | I just checked at bn.com & Core 3.5 is 20% off. Also, lots of used 3.5 books on there. |

A: I have my own company launching a new system this summer - Winter That we exclusively use B. I refuse to give more money to a company who's idea of a New version is a MMORPG Minus the Online, and who cares solely for More Money Making schemes. First the Magazines, Then 4.0 whats next? Sry We decided to quit before we funded these people any further. It's bad enough WOTC will get our money for Heroscape Minis which we play but D&D too? not anymore or again, for our RPG we use Whitewolf or My system Cataclysm. That said My books ain't selling so well, and I hate to get stuck with em. May have to Lower my price yet again just to be rid of the wretched things. ![]() |

Thus far WoTC only got money from me for the PHB. Usually I use full color scanned PDFs of the books, or books that I get for < $10.00 from private individuals on epay. Magazines? You mean the ones that preview the new classes and $hit? Yeah that's lame. I won't be buying any 4th stuff, though I'll probably flick through it in the bookstore. Don't see the need. If I see anything I like I'll wait until someone scans it and puts it online, or bring a notebook into the bookstore sit down at the tables and copy the stuff I like. It's about 1/2 finished but done enough mechanically that we use it. That or White Wolf's Scion series. but thats about the extent of our money investment in RPG stuff. The Rest is In Heroscape and general needs or In my case funding The BFP and getting it off the ground. I did flip through the "preview Books" or as I call em "Money Scams" - they expect you to buy paper back "books" just to preview the new 4E ?- and was supremely Unimpressed and found myself thinking " so why not just spend the money and get WOW?" so yeah Not buying it. I started with 1E thanks to My cousin, then onto 2E thanks to My uncle who got in during that time frame. So I'm not "new" to this area rather a Veteran of the RPG scale having played many companies and systems. Some yeah I didn't like but I made that call like i did with 4E scanned what was known and judged off of what i could see. Bailing out now just made sense for My team and I and even more so now that I'm doing a massive team every 2 weeks - 14 people- using Cataclysm. Can't say I made a bad call. I'll be keepin my eyes on 'em. Yeah Don't remind me, I hate to go any lower still i need em gone. I will prolly give it another week then drop prices a bit more. as it stands I'm already going dirt cheap shipping and Ebay seems to only validate My ideas that folks just don't wanna pay much for old news. ![]() |

Oh I'd pay for it if I had it, but frankly at this moment in my life I'm pretty far in the red zone as far as finances go and any frivolous expenditure like D&D books leaves me feeling abit guilty that I'm spending in ways that I shouldn't be. My friend just bough Magic of Incarnum, The Complete Arcane, The Complete and Spell Compendium brand new (some might have been discounted at the bookstore he goes to, idk), so had I known about this earlier he would have bought those from you probably. I can understand you want to get at least half of what you paid for them. I used to play a red white creatureless glacial chasm deck with spells that damaged everything, and two enchantments I cant remember their names but basically theyd take damage if they tapped thier land or if they left it untapped. I literally could not find anyone willing to buy em even by lots of rares etc. good luck with that :D Anyway Back On topic, after speaking of this with members of my larger team the numbers growing, 6 kids who I knew of who were gung ho for 4E have now, for some reason - wonder why?- decided to bail out and switch companies and are gonna ebay all their gear including most of the Minis. Seems to be a trend where I live every day I go out and chat with local stores to promote My company get some word out, and come home with more folks tales, who seem to be outright abandoning D and D which on a level makes me sad but secretly it's no surprise. I hate when I see these posts because they are plain IGNORANT. 1)I refuse to give more money to a company who's idea of a New version is a MMORPG Minus the Online That makes NO SENSE what so ever. So when I finally get my pre-ordered books in June and when I open them Im gonna have 85 other million people with me. No. Sooo from your reasoning, Pepsi IS Coke because they use same bubbles. LOL OK. 2)and who cares solely for More Money Making schemes. First the Magazines, Then 4.0 whats next? Now this is weird. I dont think you were forced to purchase any of the magazines, I actually thought you had something called ummm damn what were those words, o yea FREE WILL. Wizards DOES NOT make you buy anything. So if your talking about magazines or the on-line **** they conforming to no body is holding a .38 to your head (if you want you can visualize me :P) and saying "Goddammit you ARE going to buy ALL this stuff that you dont need. IF you dont buy this stuff I will blow your brains. Are you gonna buy my stuff ?" Just as the magazines held SUPPLEMENTAL rules (which arnt part of CORE, thus somebody had to go out of there way and put time and resources into it to make it) so wont the on-line counterpart. If you enjoy 3.5 with the books then guess what? Youll enjoy 4th with just the books. Its the same ******* thing of buying Races of Eberron, no body freaking about that but when the SUPPLEMENTAL is turned into a diffrent format lets every body act all ******. LOL you make me laugh. Glad your not in any of my sessions to ruin my experiences. |
| #253masamunekaigenApr 16, 2008 10:08:06 | I'm still buying 3.5, mainly because I intend to play 3.5 despite a 4ed. I've invested too much to just stop. Because of this I'll probably never get a legal copy of 4e. |

| #255JhaelenApr 16, 2008 14:00:47 | 4.0 is the most radical departure of any previous edition. THAT is a matter of opinion. IMHO, the difference between 2E and 3E is DEFINITELY greater. Earlier materials will be useless (unlike previous edition changes). I cannot agree with this, either. 'Fluffy' supplements will retain their usefulness in every edition of the game. It's the 'crunchy bits' that will become obsolete. 4E made some changes to the fluff, like the reorganisation of the outer planes. But that is largely superficial. Everything still exists in a similar form somewhere. |
| #256etarnonApr 16, 2008 14:38:48 | Everything exists..except for gnomes, right? 4e is not the same game. Woe betide those who played a gnome illusionist in the old days..*poof* gone. |

No, between 2nd & 3rd most magic, etc was transferable. A fighter was EASILY ported. Not now. Did fighters has "magical" healing in 1st - 3rd? No. Magic like abilities? No. Mechanics wise it's a TOTALLY different game. That's objective, not opinion. Vancian spell casting was 1st through 3rd. GONE in 4th. I could go on all day. No. Care to give an example for a 'magic like' fighter ability in 4E? I can't think of any. Mechanics wise it's a TOTALLY different game. That's objective, not opinion. If you think 4E mechanics are totally different from 3E then you will also have to agree that 3E mechanics are totally different from 2E. Vancian spell casting was 1st through 3rd. Just as an experiment, could you try to define what you mean by 'Vancian spell casting'? I'm willing to ignore for the moment that 3E had more classes that didn't use 'Vancian spell casting' than classes that did (assuming your definition is similar to mine, hence the above question). I'd just like to know, what is you think will not be present in 4E. I could go on all day. But, anyone who looks at it objectively sees it already. Well, I could go on all day, too! | #263Lord_DynelApr 17, 2008 9:08:51 | Jhaelen, please try to keep this forum free of bickering. I know you're not the only one, and my apolgies for calling you out specifically. Kursk was trying to look at 4e objectively. But there's always going to be some subjective reasoning when one is making comparisons. It's when you compare one thing to another when your likes and dislikes are tallied - and those are purely subjective. I don't think it's fair to have counterpoints to Kursk and then say that you are looking at it objectively, too - all the while implying that he may not be. However, you aren't totally looking at it objectively either: IMHO, the difference between 2E and 3E is DEFINITELY greater. I cannot agree with this, either. 'Fluffy' supplements will retain their usefulness in every edition of the game. Those are subjective statements. My intention in not to offend, Jhaelen, but to point out that you have had both objective and subjective stances as well. I myself, when looking at 4e, have determined that's it's not for me. Every class having to have a "power source" to explain their powers, healing available to all classes, the "simplifying" (for lack of a better word) of the skill system, healing all your hit points after one night's rest, the changes of the cosomology, magic missile rolling to hit, the at-will/encounter/daily division of powers, the removal of some classes, the removal of some races, and the breaking up of information into later releases (like multiple Draconomicons and certain iconic monsters not in the first Monster Manual) are just a few of the reasons I'm not switching. I looked at all of these things objectively, or tried to as hard as I could. The end result, my subjective viewpoint, was that it's kind of hard to take this edition seriously when they make some of the sweeping changes for "the betterment of the game." But I digress. My point was to try to quell the debate and get the thread back on topic so it doesn't get undue attention from the WizO's ![]() That being said, I am still looking at a lot of 3.5 stuff. I've just bought Pathfinder's Guide to Korsova. It's well-written and will fit into my campaign pretty well. And excellent work overall. I'm also getting the second Pathfinder arc. It looks to be a pretty good one as well. One last thing that I'm currently researching is the City of Brass box set. It's pretty expensive, but hopefully worth it. |

Can you move it to PM or another thread? Agreed. My personal opinion of 4th ed. and its mechanics don't contribute much to the discussion at hand. Whether or not I move on to 4th ed. or stick with 3.5 or try both also has precious little to do with this thread. (Although elsewhere I'll be happy to spout off.) :D I recently picked up the Dragons of Eberron and the Draconomicon, as none of my friends own a copy out of disinterest, and I am starting a campaign in which these two books will get some heavy use. He who buys these books in the last days of "RPGA" blessed 3.5 will be enjoying them long after 4th ed. roars onto the stage; and if not then why bother parting with your precious coin??? Gandalf |

I haven't even cracked it open at the FLGS, but anything I can use in my own campaign is a welcome addition to my bookshelf. ![]() The Dragons of Eberron is a good read, and treats Argonesson and its society in detail. Happily the Draconic Prophesy is no more strictly defined than in previous Eberron source books so we still have our room to manuever in as DMs. The text also details the main draconic organizations: the Chamber, the Council, the Light Siberys, just to name drop. The "Dragons of Sarlona" section also delves into why the iconic true dragons (meaning the chromatic and metallic originals) and psionics do not mix well, unless you believe all of your villains should be mad. My campaign I am writing deals with my interpretation of the Last War's last decade and what it means to the Prophesy. I'll be throwing my characters into a campaign whose beginning year is 988 so they have a chance to witness, participate in and if very lucky alter some of Eberron's history. But as to the threads main topic, I will be buying 3.5 books until I have all of the ones I want, whether a friend owns a copy or not, or they disappear from the store shelves. Gandalf |

| #268JhaelenApr 17, 2008 16:11:32 | All core classes that were casters used that system in 3.X. Sorcerers, too? I've always thought 'Vancian' meant spellbooks and the requirement to memorize spells. That you didn't know that tells me that you won't be able to compare different versions. And that comment tells me something as well. But I'll stop here because: Jhaelen, please try to keep this forum free of bickering. Now, that's funny. But I'll leave it be. You're correct that the discussion is becoming off-topic. Just let me point out, that I originally reacted on Kursk's answer to MattmanAmadeus's question which are presented as facts when they're clearly just one person's opinion. I felt it was important to point out that other opinions on the matter exist that are just as valid. | #269kurskApr 17, 2008 16:47:05 | Sorcerers, too? I've always thought 'Vancian' meant spellbooks and the requirement to memorize spells. Clerics, druids, they all use a modified form of it. | #270Lord_DynelApr 17, 2008 18:36:56 | Sorcerers, too? I've always thought 'Vancian' meant spellbooks and the requirement to memorize spells. Yes, sorcerers too. Sorcerers are a variation of a theme. You have to think of their spell slots (the spell they can cast in a day) as "open spells" that can be filled with any of their spells known - once that "spell slot" is used up, it's gone. They still have a finite number of spells per day, and after they use those "slots" they have to rest for the night. But I'll leave it be. You're correct that the discussion is becoming off-topic. | #275JhaelenApr 18, 2008 6:35:21 | Do you know why it is called Vancian casting? It refers to Jack Vance. IIRC, I even read one of his novels once, 'The Eyes of the Overworld', if I'm not mistaken. It's ages ago, though. They still have a finite number of spells per day, and after they use those "slots" they have to rest for the night. Ah, alright. If that's the common definition, then most classes in 3E indeed use the Vancian system. To add something on topic: I'm considering getting 'Lords of Madness' since mind flayers and aboleth play a significant role in my campaign. However, I've been reluctant because I already have both 'I, Tyrant' and 'Illithiad' from 2E. I'm not sure if it's worth it if I already own half of its content. Is it worth getting just for the Aboleth, I wonder? |

| #278kurskApr 18, 2008 15:46:16 | BN near me had about half a shelf of 3.5 at 20%. Nothing I wanted though. Check BN.com website. I'm sure there is more stock that route. |
| #279bughunterApr 18, 2008 19:13:36 | Amazon.com also has books on sale. Several new condition books for 34% off. |
| #280AmarilApr 18, 2008 19:14:50 | Those are normal prices for both stores. |
| #281kurskApr 19, 2008 9:02:51 | Those are normal prices for both stores. BN also has used for sale... |
| #282bringer_of_autumnApr 24, 2008 23:13:28 | The only 3.5 books I own are the DMG, PHB, MM, all of the complete series and unearthed arcana. I plan to but the spells compendium and maybe the magic items compendium. |
| #283skellisnyxApr 25, 2008 0:25:58 | my group and i will keep up our table top 3.5 game('s)! it took us so long to finally get all those damm rules down and now they want to go and change them all!! damm them! the more i see about 4e i think i may dabble with it online, but i think the rest of my group are saying "NO WAY"! if it is a viable way to play more DND i will give it a shot, but i'm not happy about it. anyone looking for 3.5 books , look at the used section on amazon, i scored some great deals! also looking to get to the auction early this year at gen con. |
| #284divisionbyzer0Apr 25, 2008 17:48:24 | Just the Magic Item Compendium. Epic Level Handbook, Extended Psionics Handbook, and Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting should be arriving soon along with a bunch of other books I got from an ebay lot. |
| #285divisionbyzer0Apr 25, 2008 17:50:01 | Skellisnyx, Props for using Shargas' holy symbol as your avatar ![]() |
| #286sciborg3Apr 26, 2008 13:32:53 | If Pathfinder works out, then I'll get 3.5 books on the cheap. "They love and leave 'em, and I pull up quick to retrieve 'em." |
| #287sleepwalker13666Apr 30, 2008 17:06:19 | Once I have the 4 exp. Books, elder evils, exemplars of evil and the rules compendium I will be done, I will have it all. |
| #288AmarilJun 10, 2008 14:02:24 | Now that 4e is actually released, I'm even more curious about how many are still buying 3.5 books. Personally, I'm considering buying a couple extra copies of the PHB for future players. |
| #289aleolusJun 10, 2008 16:41:05 | Oh, I am most definitely sticking with 3.5. Don't get me wrong, 4th does look fun, and I do plan on playing in it at least some, but it is not D&D, it is a video game with a D&D mask. |
| #290meadJun 10, 2008 20:32:21 | Haven't bought any 3.5 past the core 3 and Complete Adventurer, and Arcana Evolved. What with everyone dumping their old stuff on ebay to make cash for 4E books, I took advantage of that to pick up a 2E Monstrous Manual (had only bought the Compendium, never the hardbound) and some more Dragonskins. |
| #291southerntigerJun 11, 2008 8:20:07 | I'm not buying but still playing... :D |
| #292NathreetJun 11, 2008 10:09:52 | Oh, I am most definitely sticking with 3.5. Don't get me wrong, 4th does look fun, and I do plan on playing in it at least some, but it is not D&D, it is a video game with a D&D mask. +1. |
| #293apollyonschosenJun 11, 2008 10:18:26 | I just picked up Drow Of The Underdark, Book Of Exalted Deeds, Champions Of Ruin, and Dungeonscape. here are still some titles i want to round out my collection, but i imagine they will be had for cheap, and i want to get them while i can. 3.5 is still #1 in my book. 4th edition drifts in at a distant second. But i can't edition hate just yet. I got some playtesting to do. ;) |
| #294divisionbyzer0Jun 11, 2008 22:44:24 | Still trying to find a cheap races of eberron. |
| #295divisionbyzer0Jun 11, 2008 22:45:55 | Haven't bought any 3.5 past the core 3 and Complete Adventurer, and Arcana Evolved. I loved 2e monstrous. That's one I actually don't have. Lent it to a friend and never got it back. You can get most of the 2e books for dirt, save for the planescape stuff at this point. Cant get a damn Blood War for under $70. Planes of law/chaos/conflict are expensive too. I wished I woulda kept my old planescape stuff. I'd be running a game in it now if I had. |

I wanted a 2e MM for my Core Rules display shelf, but the only edition I'm really interested in filling out is 1e. Well, maybe some of the FR 2e sets I don't have or lent-lost. |
| #298divisionbyzer0Jun 11, 2008 23:08:12 | I wanted a 2e MM for my Core Rules display shelf, but the only edition I'm really interested in filling out is 1e. | #299meadJun 12, 2008 10:12:02 | White bound.. given a choice for 1e and 2e I go for as early a printing as possible when collecting. Since I occasionally use them to play, I try to get the latest printing of everything 3e (and later), for the errata fixes. |
| #300soulmageJun 15, 2008 17:41:03 | I hope so. . . I've got a big 3.5 library to unload to make room for 4E. Unlike my 1E books. . . they're not books I'll choose to hang onto for sentimental/collector reasons. |
| #301jktrondarrJun 15, 2008 17:51:06 | since i can't stand the look and feel of 4th edition, i'll still be playing 3.5 for a long time. and there's tons of 3.0/3.5 stuff i don't have yet. i was even thinking of unloading the rest of my 1st/2nd edition stuff to help pay for the 3rd edition stuff i still want. |
| #302divisionbyzer0Jun 15, 2008 20:38:38 | White bound.. given a choice for 1e and 2e I go for as early a printing as possible when collecting. For 2e, the earlier versions looked better than the black bound ones in my opinion as well. I love the art in the 2e MM too -- D'Terizelli (sp?) is the man. |
| #303patrakisJun 15, 2008 20:49:22 | Well, I've bought all the new releases from Paizo this afternoon. Pathfinder number 9, a new module, the pathfinder gazeteer. I already got everything ever made by Wizards so i get my kick of D&D elsewhere now. Too bad WotC doesn't make D&D anymore. So yes, i'm still buying 3.5 stuff. Pat |
| #304AmarilJun 15, 2008 21:35:33 | Finally, I just ordered MMV. Anything else at this point would be unnecessary. The only thing I might consider are PDF copies of back issues of specific Dragon/Dungeon issues from Paizo. |
| #305the_overlord_02Oct 07, 2008 16:06:44 | Still loving 3.x. Got all the official wizard hardcovers (and some soft covers). Haven't even used halve of the materials in game (write most of my campaigns myself). Now I am into the collecting of specific campaigns (non wizard). Midnight is completely covered. With Swashbuckling Adventurers and Kalamar coming close. Currently working on a new house rules manuscript. Some work still not finished, but my players are looking forward to the proposed house rules (character templates, additional massive damage threshold, character contact points, some new feat (system) and more). Truth be told, I do not think we will be finished with 3.x before a long time. It isn't even the money or time allready invested. But we like the rules as they are. And 3.x gives us enough possibilities to still continue the game while having loads of fun. As long as we continue having fun in our games, none of us see the necesity to change editions. Just my two cents |
| #306The_JesterOct 07, 2008 16:45:27 | I bought the Rules Compendium well after 4e was announced and I'm sticking with 3.5/Pathfinder. I might pick-up a few choice books if I find them cheap/second hand but I've already got a massive library and don't feel the need for every splatbook. |
| #307ranger_regOct 07, 2008 20:12:06 | I'm scrounging around to buy 3e (3.0e and 3.5e) products as well as d20 System labeled products before they run out or can't be sold again (the printed products). |
| #308divisionbyzer0Oct 07, 2008 21:47:56 | Got a physical copy of The Book of Nine Swords not too long ago. I have digital copies of mostly everything I need. If I find myself referencing a particular PDF a lot, I'll buy it, but as of now I'm good. Might buy the Rules Compendium off of someone else I play with. |
| #309elondirOct 08, 2008 12:00:25 | I figure that between OD&D, 1e, 2e, 3e, and 4e, I've got a complete set of house rules. I've got my D&D just the way I like it, using Pathfinder as a base, pieces from the rest, and a few original houserules, such as these:
|
| #310divisionbyzer0Oct 08, 2008 12:12:54 | I want to play in your game. |
| #311divinedragoonxdOct 16, 2008 15:44:06 | Aye, as do I. However, I'll not be moving with WotC's 4e. Pathfinder RPG, here I come.... Moving with the times insinuates going with the general population. The general population votes for 4E. |
| #312Steely_DanOct 17, 2008 8:57:19 | I just picked up the two Fiendish Codex's (awesome!), Elder Evils and plan on picking up Lords of Madness and Drow of the Underdark – I'm just buying up the last fluff heavy 3rd Ed books before they drop off the radar completely. |
| #313ArtifactOct 17, 2008 9:24:59 | I just picked up the two Fiendish Codex's (awesome!), Elder Evils and plan on picking up Lords of Madness and Drow of the Underdark – I'm just buying up the last fluff heavy 3rd Ed books before they drop off the radar completely. If you like Elder Evils maybe consider Exemplars of Evil as well. A great resouce for creating iconic villains for D&D, in the vein of Arcrerak, Bargle, and Artemis. It's solid enough on its own but works great as a companion piece to Elder Evils. Elder Evils and Exemplars of Evil act as sort of "book-ends" to my 3.5 collection. |
| #314DigitalMageOct 17, 2008 9:46:18 | I bought PHB II in pdf format yesterday and I have the Complete series in my sights (again in PDF format as I have no shelf space left ) |
| #315ArtifactOct 17, 2008 10:16:38 | I bought PHB II in pdf format yesterday and I have the Complete series in my sights (again in PDF format as I have no shelf space left There's a discussion in another thread ;) about the "uniform" look that 4e is giving it's books. Trouble is, I can't really appreciate such a thing because I ran out of shelf space right about the time I capped off my 3.5 collection. I've got shelves covered with D&D books, some 1st edition, lots of 2nd edition, and most all 3rd edition. I really have no room for 4e . . . unless I wanna buy more shelving. For now, I'm just stacking them on top of other things (the TV, the nightstand, etc.) but that's not gonna last ;). |
| #316apparitOct 17, 2008 10:23:34 | I'm a 2nd Ed AD&D player originally, but started on 3.5 recently. I bought the PH, MM, DMG, ECS, Races of Eberron, Sharn: City of Towers, Shadows of the Last War and I intend to continue to expand my collection. I truthfully can't be bothered to play 4th Ed and it doesn't really appeal to me anyway. |
| #317divisionbyzer0Oct 18, 2008 1:34:51 | Presumably, this is the Pathfinder everyone is talking about here? |
| #318john_paul_stoddardOct 18, 2008 9:27:02 | Presumably, this is the Pathfinder everyone is talking about here? Yes it is... By the Way if you goto the Paizo site instead of Amazon's, you can still download the "Beta" version of the PDF FREE |
| #319kurskOct 18, 2008 10:19:51 | . The general population votes for 4E. Really? By survey, 94% of the D&D players I know aren't moving to 4.0. |
| #320rauricOct 19, 2008 21:48:59 | Since everyone I know in South Jersey is playing 4E I do not have to play 3.5 anymore and have not since February. |
| #321Cyber-DaveOct 19, 2008 23:18:34 | Unless White Wolf, by some stroke of luck, publishes some Monte Cook's World of Darkness 3.5e splat books, I am done buying 3.5 edition books. I got turned off of 3e D&D about the same time 3.5 edition came out, turned to d20 Modern, which in turn got supplanted by Star Wars Saga and Monte Cooks World of Darkness. Now, between Star Wars Saga rules for sci-fi games I want to run, Monte Cook's World of Darkness for modern horror I want to run, and 4e D&D for heroic fantasy I want to run, I really have no need of buying 3e books. |
| #322southerntigerOct 20, 2008 8:20:18 | Really? By survey, 94% of the D&D players I know aren't moving to 4.0. That's the same where I'm at to. I've only seen a handful of people playing 4th and I don't know any of them. All of my friends are still playing 3.5 and aren't switching. I saw a couple of groups playing 4th edition at the local gaming store but it was interesting to note how heavily the group skewed to the young side. 2 of the player's couldn't have been over 12 years of age. anyway, I have downloaded pathfinder beta but that's about it. I've been thinking about looking for the out of print warcraft books but they are pricy. I may have to go to an e-store and get the pdfs. |
