You could get DDI instead.

Or not buy anything more.

Is a ninja holding a shuriken to your throat, forcing you to buy more books?

You can play the game with just the PHB, DMG, and MM.  Everything else expands on the game and provides more options.

The only way you would be "forced" to buy it is if the PHB referenced rules in the DMG 2, which skipped every other word, the latter half of which were placed in the back of the MM, but all the monster statblocks left HP blank and covered it in a table in the PHB 2.  The rules, though, aren't incomplete, thus you aren't forced to buy anything.

I definitely enjoy the diversity, though i don't buy many books anymore thanks to the character builder.

Buy what you want to use, I bought the FRPG for the swordmage and gensai stats, I didn't get the campaign guide cause I'm not huge on the setting. I skip the majority of the splat books unless they somehow add to the campaign I'm running.

No. I like variety and options.

No. You do not have to buy any of these things.

In my country, we recently had a gambling addict who tried to sue his bookmaker for allowing him to give them all his money (over £2 million in total). He lost.

Yes a lot can be done with the original classes (likely why they were released first), And you can do reflavoring if you wanted to make them what you needed, but I like having official support for different things.

The seeker, I have no problem making it a martial class and trick arrows instead of the primal spirits thing.

I have a player using a kalashter shaman as a character who manifests his opponents dreams, so it's more psionic rather than primal.

These were inspired by the base class, instead of taking a character concept and then switching another class to make it work. And without those classes those inspirations didn't come.

The extra support is nice because it's inspiration. And the fact it's official crunch requiring less work from the dm and player in reworking is icing on the cake to me.

I suppose there are some benefits to a very limited range of options: everyone knows all the rules/options; there's no arguments between DMs and Players about allowing new races etc.; there is no nagging completist itch; there's no option paralysis; Player's don't feel that their PC is being gimped by not having the latest release; some PCs don't overshadow others by virtue of their Players having more books; you save money....

However, even taking all the above into account, I'd still rather have a wide and varied selection of books.  I love reading them, even if I don't try all the options in game.  I want WotC to do well - and that means they need to keep selling stuff.  I like having options, and I like having the stimulus to creativity that other people's ideas can give me.  I like looking at more pretty artwork, and I like other people to have niche interests catered for even if a particular book does nothing for me.

Overall, more books is good.
