The rules allow for up to a level 5 character with no choices due to the lack of content. It's a great start to make some new house-ruled content off of. I'm itnerested in running this in my campaign, currently at level 7, so I'm hoping to write some content that will get it up level 7 or 8. Does anyone have any homebrew or house-ruled disciplains, class powers, or numbers for the power points that they've come up with yet?
To get the ball rolling, I'll put up the table numbers I was thinking of using for levels 6 and 7 a dicipline I've been working on.

| #2shintashiAug 20, 2015 14:04:54 | the authors have voiced they dispise tradtional psionics and sciency sounding names. While the scientific community considers psionics pure fantasy, D&D authors paradoxically consider things like telepathy, telekinesis, and pyrokinesis to be too futuristic and real.
so instead, telekinesis will probably be something like Butterfly Fey Wind, and Force Field will be reskinned as Watchful Ward of the Spirits. Pyrokinesis also needs to be reflavored to something, so how about Mystical Spark of the Inner Flame. While we are at it, Psi-Sword can become Ephemeral Blade of the Heavens.
so while they are literally photocopying the table from the Dungeon Masters Guide for Spell point wizards and sorcerers, and they are reflavoring all the terms to sound more like wizard spells, that's ok, they stand firmly by the claim that Psionics won't just be another Sorcerer or Wizard.

Yes yes, that's fine. I deliberately didn't name it anything reasonable, but something more to label it for the readers of this post. Naming is not relavant to this thread. I'm looking to come up with some powers, class features, and numbers for the higher levels that folks think is balanced for this edition. I'm not really interested in the names debate. |
| #4shintashiAug 20, 2015 15:41:34 | I like that you want to create a community participation in constructing psionic rules, though wizards has gotten pretty insular.
In 5th edition you have advantage, disadvantage, +2-6 proficiency bonus, d4 to 2d6 weapon, 6-12 max low level cantrip, 24-32 or so high level cantrip, 15-300 max damage from level 1-9 spells, 8-40 healing from low level spells, 70-700 healing from high level spells, AC bonuses from 3-12, and attacks filling one of three categories: Action/Bonus/Reaction. You have Attribute Bonuses from +1-5 for low levels, and +5-10 for high levels. At 20th level Epic Boons exist and characters can build demigods using them.
Range increments come in self/touch/30/60/90/120/150/300/1 mile/plane of existence, with a few exceptions for some weapons and feats. Radius ranges are somewhat similar, with 10, 15, 30, and 5 mile radius ranges being examples. Durations tend to be instantaneous, concentration, 1 minute, 10 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours/1 day, and until dispelled. Wizards and other classes have their primary elements, typically fire and electricity doing the most, followed by necrotic and cold, then force and psychic. Psionic characters are going to capitalize on Psychic and Force damage values, so they should actually bypass the normal "these damage categories don't do as much as the others" rule that applies to wizards.
Pyrokinetic characters, or __-kinetic characters are specialists of their area, and generally should be as effective as whatever other damage values you want to use. This basically means someone who has cryokinesis/Frozen/iceman powers as their specialty should be able to roll the same or similar damage dice as pyrokinesis guy or electrokinesis guy... BUT, if we are talking about a lady with telepathy or clairvoyance for example, while she might have an electrokinesis, cryokinesis, or whatever, her damage dice would be less than the specialist in those areas, while her Psychic Damage categories would be similar.
Telepaths do psychic damage (i.e. phantasmal force) Psychometabolists do necrotic or melee damage (i.e. claws) Pyrokineticists do fire damage (i.e. produce flame) cryokineticists do cold damage (i.e. frost bite) electrokineticists do lightning damage (i.e. shocking grasp)
Psionicists excel at dealing with Sanity, Aberrations, Dimensions, and Planes. While spell casters have to be 17th level to use Astral Projection, Psionicists have a less potent version (that doesn't have the ability to effect 8 creatures or allow them to Teleport or Permanently Plane shift) that can be used as a form of Clairvoyance, or as a way to gain experiences in psychic form on the Astral plane
Mage Hand and Telekinesis should be seen as guide posts for higher level abilities, rather than start and stopping points. Bigby Hand spells, Wall of Force, and Magic Missile are all good examples of how to set up Psychokinetic/Telekinetic powers. Levitation and Fly are also mid points with higher level options possible - the Sorcerer should not be the only class that can get Flight at will with no duration maximum as a class ability - a few minutes is definitely not enough.
Psionic characters are likely at high level to soar off into the stars, or space, and not worry about vaccuum, either because they don't need to breath, or because the campaign setting means everyone can breath. Psionic characters should be able to hold their own against Aboleths and Illithids, given sufficient level. |
