| #1MarandahirFeb 07, 2010 23:06:33 | Excerpts Martial Power 2: Combat Styles In today's Martial Power 2 preview, we look at combat styles; whereby, no two warriors are exactly alike. Schools of swordplay, tactical systems, martial philosophies, and local traditions influence a warrior’s basic strikes and parries. Over time, collections of moves and attacks become recognized as distinct combat styles. Talk about this Preview here. ![]() |
| #2DragoncatFeb 07, 2010 23:20:47 | Looking nice, but why are they split into one feat for each class? It would seem easier to have an Arkhosian Fang Master feat that has Req: Ranger, fighter, or warlord, and grants the attack roll bonus across the board, and gives a further bonus based on your class, with the encounter table listing all powers per level that work with it. Seems like that would save a whole lot of space. |
| #3drnickFeb 07, 2010 23:34:58 | Well the +2 appears to be untyped so it stacks with multiclass/hybric characters this way. Also it looks like each feat grants a different type of basic attack with the powers. (i.e. the Ranger gets it only on a charge). |
| #4Janx_14Feb 07, 2010 23:49:30 | Looking nice, but why are they split into one feat for each class? I think its because Hybrids could get double benefit out of these feats if martial/martial, so could multiclass characters. For example, my Avenger|Paladin enjoys having Power of Strenght on both at-wills. |
| #5Sea-EnvyFeb 08, 2010 2:38:28 | I wonder if they will print the rule that no attack can be modified by more then one feat at a time. I heard that it applied to arena feats but a cust serve answer said that there was no rule against it. ( fill in your favorite slam against cust serve here ) |
| #6AwesomologistFeb 08, 2010 9:19:59 | I wonder if they will print the rule that no attack can be modified by more then one feat at a time. Thats not entirely true. The Lesser feats work fine with feats such as Weapon Expertise, since WE is an untyped bonus. But you are correct if you're trying to combine say an Arena Style feat with a Combat Style feat. Using an attack is not supposed to trigger both feats. However it looks like Greater Style and Lesser Style feats are supposed to work in conjunction. Otherwise these look just like Domain Feats, except that in place of getting a Channel Divinity power you can take a greater feat that modifies an associated encounter power. I have a feeling that once we see the whole list we'll end up with the same things that happened in Divine Power; most of the feats will find limited use but a handful will be too good to pass up. |
| #7VaultDwellerFeb 08, 2010 9:32:26 | My bastard sword-wielding Fighter / MC Ranger isn't a fan of the Arkhosian Fang style, so here's hoping that Nerathan High Blade will be good for him. |

| #10drnickFeb 08, 2010 11:18:12 | When flaming goes very very wrong (LOL) |
| #11melloredFeb 08, 2010 12:59:12 | I do find the weapon selection odd, why greatsword but no fullblade... |
| #12greatfritoFeb 08, 2010 13:32:34 | I do find the weapon selection odd, why greatsword but no fullblade... I was thinking the exact same thing... limiting it to specific weapons (rather than weapon groups) seems... well, in most cases, just not good. I'm hoping that, even with those specific-weapon-limitations, there's at least one style option for every weapon group. |
| #13KaldricFeb 08, 2010 14:48:47 | I think it's because they get tired of seeing every build use the same weapon. I kind of like the idea of more feats tied to sub-optimal weapons. I'd like to see a fighter use a pick, or a mace, or whatever. |
| #14Lord_VentnorFeb 08, 2010 17:03:59 | My bastard sword-wielding Fighter / MC Ranger isn't a fan of the Arkhosian Fang style, so here's hoping that Nerathan High Blade will be good for him. Is this supposed to be some attempt at trolling? If so... |
| #15Salamandyr2000Feb 08, 2010 17:09:13 | It seems a bit strange to me that since the fullblade is intended to be Greatsword 2: the Apology, that there is a style feat that the greatsword can use, but not the fullblade. As far as I can tell, the flavor of the greatsword is "a big, two-handed sword", and the flavor of the fullblade is "an EVEN BIGGER, two-handed sword", it seems that the Arkhosian Fang style ought to include fullblade too. EDIT: guess I wasn't the first person to find this odd. |
| #16williamhm75Feb 08, 2010 18:08:06 | It seems a bit strange to me that since the fullblade is intended to be Greatsword 2: the Apology, that there is a style feat that the greatsword can use, but not the fullblade. Definitley something to be house ruled then. |
| #17ebronFeb 08, 2010 19:19:53 | Presumably it is due to the fact that the Fullblade has the High Crit feature and so therefor counts as an overlarge Falchion in the feat creators head rather than a better Greatsword? And will therefor presumably qualify for Desert Moon? |
| #18juzerFeb 09, 2010 6:59:35 | My bastard sword-wielding Fighter / MC Ranger isn't a fan of the Arkhosian Fang style, so here's hoping that Nerathan High Blade will be good for him. ...not so but still laughing for the image I was just friendly pointing, trust me, the post I quoted seriously, I don't find personal choiches as valuable resources for THIS THREAD or you will find interesting the possibly weapon fighting style of my male half-elf warlord who is fighting sharrans with a longsword and a heavy shield, and how happy will he be if he can make better use of flais 'cause I love 'em but now it's more important the to-hit bonus of the sword then the d10? more in-topic: there's a sheanky combat style fot shortbows and crossbows - at least some love for shortbows but did you find could be also a hint about some new options for a rogue shotrbow user? about the "fullblade not-included" I think, like others, is just because is considered in the heavy-blades-high-crit group and too many PGs are using it: like many others, I hope this combat styles could spread the option choiches of martial characters |
| #19FalenFeb 09, 2010 9:04:07 | Didn't anybody notice that the associated feats for Arkhosian Fang Mauler are absent? |
| #20Salamandyr2000Feb 09, 2010 9:25:38 | I did. Since it was a preview I didn't think too much about it; just figured they didn't want to give everything away too soon, or they were up against a word limit of some kind. |
| #21archangel62Feb 09, 2010 10:52:16 | One thing I wonder about in terms of weapons and feats is if there might be an intention to make it so that the newer exotic weapons aren't the automatic default, in essence "Rather than spend your feat on that exotic weapon from AV or another book, why not spend it on this style feat and make the more mundane weapons really interesting?" Though I suppose it can have issues regardless. |
| #22Salamandyr2000Feb 09, 2010 11:02:26 | Archangel, that would be awesome if that was the case, but so far, from what I've seen, there are two things to rebutt that. Superior weapons do have style feats available to them, for instance the fullblade can use Desert Moon, and bastard swords can use the Arkhosian Fang style they previewed. While some style feats will wind up being more useful than others, I doubt Wizards went about intending to make some reallly awesome styles, and some bad ones, so it's likely that the style feat available for fullblades is just as good (if not better) than the one for greatswords...it's just not really flavor appropriate. The other thing is that since even with the style feat, superior weapons are, in general, still better. The combat style feats provide a generally minor situational bonus, while superior weapons provide a scaling increase in damage (through larger weapon die, or high crit property, or brutal) that works with every power a class has. Combat styles are cool, but I doubt there's one that is (mechanically) worth grabbing before superior weapon proficiency (or the appropriate Racial Weapon Training), much less instead of. |
| #23greatfritoFeb 09, 2010 11:49:39 | Well, really there aren't that many styles that are limited to specific weapons - what, 5 out of 23 or so? And I think it's mostly just the Fullblade exclusion that seems weird, flavor-wise, and that's because it's not in the same style with Longsword, Bastardsword, Greatsword, but instead included in the Scimitar and Falchion style. It's just weird - but I guess kind of understandable. That said, the Fullblade also functions with the Steel Vanguard style. I have an "every once in a while" Human Fullblade Fighter who used the playtest version of the feat. If it's still the same benefit (crit on 19 or 20 with Brash Strike), it's a nice little feat to have. Heck, just having its boost apply to Brash Strike instead of Footwork Lure is enough to sell me on that feat over several others. |
