I've got an early copy, so if anyone wants to ask about its contents then I would be happy to share information about it.

Aberrations have always been my favorites. Any good aberrations? Particularly ones that make for great major campaign villains like Mind Flayers as opposed to little monsters like, I dunno, the Destrachan. Specifically, I've been hoping to get Ethergaunts back.

Also, I know that chances are slim, but are the Marruspawn in this one?

Well, the beholders have some new members to their family, although the highest level one is lvl18 the Ghost Beholder. There are also Cloakers making a return. Foulspawn are a fairly basic threat and aren't very imaginative as a new set of monsters, while the Intellect Devourers are back, which is something that every PC should hide under a table for. For sea abberent combat, the Kraken is back, with a lvl10 and a lvl25 variant. Both are solo. I like Krakens.

The species that freaked me out most in 3rd edition are back: Meenlocks. They are just SOO scary. Yeah. Even the Mimics are less nasty than them. Also Ilithids get an entire page of fluff, and several epic level enemies, including their Elder Brain. Also, this doesn't really count as Aberrent but... do you remember Susurrus? They have made a come back with an entire race made from the original Susurrus (funnilly enough the Susurrus is also from the 3rd edition MM3) and the race is called 'Nerra' as a singular. So Nerras?

Star spawn are also here. They are connected to the stars that Warlocks may get their powers from. Ulban and Caiphon, Nihal and Allabar all have representatives.

That's it for Aberrents.

EDIT: However, I have noticed that there is a massive prevelence of Shadow creatures. There may even be more shadow creatures than imortals, and certainly more than the number of abberents.

There is a similar thread in the General Discussion board. You may want to reply there.

they should stat the sun out as a star. i know that the current fluff says it walks around in Hestavar in a humanoid form but i think it would be interesting learnign why an aberrant creature dwells among the gods.

Are there any monster markups for playable races? I'm sure Wizards doesn't allow for posting the actual stats, but I'm sure saying the names are ok, right?

None of them are presented as playable from my understanding.

That's a shame. I'd like to have seen a write-up for a Centaur or a Yuan-Ti.

Everybody who is not sun-blind already knows Pelor is evil. It makes perfect sense that he'd be some sort of Lovecraftian eldritch abomination too.

Pfft, Misinformation spread by agents of asmodeus. Although, it would be funny to learn that it was Pelor who opened the living gate to further a secret goal and then sealed the gate once his goal had been met. Could make a fun adventure.

The write ups in the back of the Monster Manuals are not for players use.  They are meant for DM's.  I dont think you will see any more write ups in the MM's because too many players dont realize my previous statement.  So its easier for WOTC to not do write ups than to have to restate what was already clearly stated and overlooked by some.

The thing about lawful evil deities is that there's usually some truth mixed in with their lies.

Although, it would be funny to learn that it was Pelor who opened the living gate

Cool though that would undoubtedly be, I'm still pretty sure that was Tharizdun.

Some truth doesn't say much and being lawful evil doesn't mean they can't tell a complete, 100% lie. As for tharizdun being the one. I'm not so sure. I also do not see a connection between the shard of evil and the living gate beyond both being crystal. I also believe that the abyss was created before the dawn war, while the living gate wasn't opened til during the dawn war. Now, tharizdun could have chipped off a piece, but I'm still not seeing the connection the gate has to absolute evil. If that were the case, shardmind would be evil, since they would be from the exact same crystal.

I'm sure, if we used time machine theories, we could connect the dots back to anything. We could even say Tharizdun was once a lawful good god and the father of all the astral deities. But honestly, an "unnamed god" could be Ioun, who opened the gate for a purpose known only to her. It could have been any of the gods (except torog as he was already in the underdark), trying to funnel the aberrant scourge into the elemental chaos in order to tip the scales against the primordials. There is also a very good chance that the astral deity who opened the gate was destroyed in the process, or killed/imprisoned during the dawn war.

Just too many variables and Tharizdun is the easiest scapegoat, since he's the astral boogyman.

Having just got The Plane Above and read that Pelor is apparently hiding several fragments of the Living Gate to stop the shardminds from restoring it, I'm beginning to wonder if Thorn-Wychkin is right after all.
