| #1gideonpepysMar 10, 2009 18:50:12 | Am I going crazy or did I read somewhere that there is a preview of the monk class imminent? I'm sure I saw it somewhere on the Wizards site, but now I can't find it! (My friend really wants to play a monk...) |

| #3ShadoMar 10, 2009 18:58:26 | We're supposed to get a preview/beta version of the Monk some time in May. Linky |
| #4gideonpepysMar 11, 2009 11:22:00 | Woohoo! (There's a third party monk class out there, but it just doesn't cut it. The mechanics are the most complicated mess I've ever seen!) |
| #5Steely_DanMar 11, 2009 11:32:13 | It's practically confirmed to be a Ki Striker. |
| #6TheLoneClericMar 11, 2009 11:51:47 | It's practically confirmed to be a Ki Striker. Practically, but not completely. This comes from a bit from Race/Classes and a Podcast. But they've been vague. |
| #7Steely_DanMar 11, 2009 11:59:33 | Practically, but not completely. This comes from a bit from Race/Classes and a Podcast. But they've been vague. Well, when asked if it was a Martial Striker, they said we were half right; then they confirmed it as a Striker, I believe (so I'm thinking Ki). |
| #8halfricanMar 11, 2009 12:42:56 | That was a looong time ago, back during a time when sorcerers were controllers. The also said they hadn't begun to seriously work on the class yet as well. As far as I'm concerned, it's anyone's race right now. |
| #9belladonna5012Mar 11, 2009 13:49:28 | I get the creeping suspicion that it'll still be ki, but for all we know it could be a defender or even a controller (which I don't think is likely, but the druid gets a significant amount of melee control, so it's not impossible). If it is a striker, I find myself wondering if it'll be of the "tough striker," a la the barbarian or avenger, or "flimsy striker," a la the rogue, variety. The fact that part of its legend includes wound-mending suggests the former, but I still wonder what its hit points, AC tendencies, etc. will be. |
| #10squarecircleMar 11, 2009 14:22:11 | My birthday is in May. Yay WotC for this birthday present. And yay me. |
| #11borg285Mar 11, 2009 15:25:27 | My birthday is St. Patrick's day, the day they come out with PHB 2. Such a wonderful gift. |
| #12guest1026868146_dupMar 11, 2009 15:56:11 | The monk is the only major class left and a Martial Controller is the only thing they currently haven't done. I wouldn't mind seeing it as a Controller with Leader/ Striker sub-roles. Pushing, pulling, sliding, and dishing out effects all make sense for a monk to do. |

Well, apparently they've been trying to do away with "needless symmetry" or something, so they may not ever do a Martial Controller. However, all three other power sources currently out have all 4 roles covered: Defenders -Swordmage (Arcane) -Paladin (Divine) -Warden (Primal) Leaders -Bard (Arcane) -Arificer (Arcane) -Cleric (Divine) -Shaman (Primal) Strikers -Warlock (Arcane) -Sorceror (Arcane) -Avenger (Divine) -Barbarian (Primal) Controllers -Wizard (Arcane) -Invoker (Divine) -Druid (Primal) It would seem to be a shame that Martial it the only power source without a controller, especially considering we've now seen how a melee character could control (Druid in Wild Shape form is pretty good at it from what I've seen at my table). Will Wizards do it? I don't know, at this point I doubt it. As for the monk, I'm pretty sure it'll be a Ki Striker. |

For what little it's worth (PURE SPECULATION) I'm expecting two builds; one where the 'typical' stat priority is STR-DEX-WIS, a brawler style of monk that is a Striker that minors in, well, moar Striker - it hits hard and focusses primarily on dealing damage. The other being DEX-WIS-STR that dabbles in a bit of controller with pushes, slides, and status effects. If you insist on applying real world martial arts stuff to it (I don't), the former would be more akin to boxing or Thai kickboxing. The latter would be more like judo or aikido -- though either one could simply be a more generic pugilist/brawler/back-alley street fighter. |
