Spawn of Kyuss, Son of Kyuss

In today's Monster Manual 3 featured creature, Spawn of Kyuss come from the insane fools who heeded Kyuss’s diseased vision when he was mortal. After Kyuss slew them to fuel his apotheosis, the worms of his new body spread to their bloated corpses, awakening the creatures to undeath. These grim messengers then became carriers of Kyuss’s dark desires and added new victims to their numbers. Here, we look at a particular variety of his spawn, the Son of Kyuss.

I think this goes to show how much 4e has basically said "Core doesn't exist. Everything's worth the same. Deal with it."

May 29, 2010 14:01:21 I really like this monster to the point where ive changed a campaign idea ive spent the last week working on. I was working on a campaign idea using Orcus as the main driver but im strongly persuaded to move toward Kyuss instead after seeing this monster and relooking at Open Grave.

I think this goes to show how much 4e has basically said "Core doesn't exist. Everything's worth the same. Deal with it."

Haven't we had similar things occuring since 1st edition? I vaguely recall hearing that some of the big demons and devils were originally mentioned in "core books" like MMs and then statted in splat books.

Nope. I don't find it odd at all. A spawn of Kyuss could turn up pretty much anywhere in almost any campaign, just as a random scary monster. Kyuss himself is only ever going to be an encounter in an epic campaign whose primary goal is stopping and/or killing him.

As a DM, I'm quite happy to buy a 'second tier' sourcebook in order to gain access to a unique world-threatening epic-tier campaign Big Bad.

It's actually far more 'odd', IMO, that Lolth is in MM3 rather than in Underdark*.

But I don't think WotC actually has any overarching plan for which monsters end up in which books. I think individual monsters will just turn up when they're 'ready'. The only exception seems to be that each MM has one 'iconic' epic-tier Big Bad (Orcus/Demogorgon/Lolth), and that's probably more to ensure an appropriately kick-ass cover picture than anything else.

* - This is possibly just bias on my part. I'm a big Lolth/drow fan, whereas I really don't give a carp** about Torog. Underdark was a bit of a disappointment for me for that reason.

** - Which is a fish, not a typo.

I find it odd that this still surprises you after 2 years. I'm pretty sure the "everything is core" thing is no secret.
