I know that a monster token product was released for 4th ed with a monster manual (monster vault, perhaps?), I've never actually used monster tokens, but it seems like a good idea, for people who don't want to spend lots of money on miniatures, but still like to play out combats on a grid.
Do you think we're gonna see a similar product for D&D 5th?
Or perhaps standing cardboard minis like the pathfinder ones?
Having tokens is always a good idea since a collection of minis gets expensive. Sadly, I think this is probably at the bottom of their priorities right now in terms of things that fans are DEMANDING that WotC release next. Also I see that D&D tokens from 4E are still plentiful on eBay, quite inexpensive per set actually. I don't see how monsters from 4th Edition would actually look much different from monsters in 5th. Although I tend to like the artwork that I've seen so far from 5E, prefer it over the artwork from 4E.
Also, IIRC there are also monster tokens for D&D monsters from 3rd party companies, I've seen several from Kickstarter alone.
i think the tokens for 4e didn't sell too well because of their flatness.
i had both sets but never used them because they were so boring that
unpinted orcs from my WoA game represented bullywugs better then the flat bullywug tokens did.
the pathfinder stand up pawns on the other hand seem to be selling quite well.
they came out with a 5th full set recently, and have released a bunch of smaller sets
to accompany their adventure paths.
i would be surprised... well with WotC i guess i wouldn't actually be surprised, but
they would be missing out on what seem to be significant profits if they did not
come out with a box of stand up pawns to match the monster manual.
There are numerous offerings for counter tokens, mostly in electronic format, though.

As tokens or stand-ups are essentially system-less, you should be able to make do without official 5e ones.
I don't own any minis at all and PDF's aren't really what I'm looking for, since I don't want to spend a lot of time printing and cutting, only to end up with tokens that are inferior to professional printed ones. The Pathfinder pawns look interesting, but I would prefer a similar product with artwork from D&D 5th. For the time being I'll proberbly stick with my small pieces of cardboard that says "skeleton A", "orc D" and so on
