| #1VaultDwellerFeb 03, 2010 9:23:04 | From this monsth's Ampersand: "The Monster Vault boxed set includes a book of essential Dungeons & Dragons monsters, tokens for every monster in the box, an adventure, and a poster map." From the product catalog description:
So, if these are "essential" monsters and this is meant to be a baseline for the game moving forward, I assume that many of these monsters will be ones previously published. Or maybe they will be all new variations on familiar monster types - because we have such a dire need for more types of goblins (obviously). Do we know anything beyond that about what monsters to expect? Will they all be monsters previously published, thus forcing us to buy something we already have in order to get the other contents of this set? All new monsters? Maybe monsters from MM1 updated to reflect the more recent revisions to monster creation guidelines? I'm interested in what we will get out of this book. I do like to get all of the published adventures. The monster tokens would be very appealing if I hadn't already spent countless hours producing (so far) about 700 tokens of my own. All in all, I'm just not sure how much value there is in this set to someone who isn't using it as a starting point. |

3 Gamma and the The Monster Vault.

| #4yellerSumnerFeb 04, 2010 0:27:24 | One of the D&D XP summaries I read said it would be 75% new monsters. I don't know if that's *NEW* new or just "Here's an orc we haven't statted yet =D" I haven't spent a lot of time or money on minis/tokens (yet I've bought quite a few Dungeon Tile sets), so it's something I'm interested in. |
| #5Authw8Feb 04, 2010 12:01:10 | My guess would be new & improved versions of monsters we already have. I want those tokens badly, but the book itself is kind of pointless for me, since I print all my monsters from the MB anyway. |
| #6Style75Feb 04, 2010 13:44:55 | I think this is intended for the new "Essentials" line. Basically a simplified rules set with a lower price point aimed at encouraging new and younger players. This will go along with the Red Box. The old red box could get away without tokens or minis, but the 4th edition will require it. Thus the monster vault. |

Since they are giving iconic races and classes, it would be fitting to have the iconic monsters as well. I think the dragons would be a reprint since I seldom see variations of it, but using the solo rules of DMG2. Other than that, I don't expect "new" monsters at all, save the MM3. |
| #8Duke5150Feb 05, 2010 0:12:50 | I'm all about monsters. Always have been. I buy every monster book D&D throws at me. 4e is no different. Since monster creation is one of my favorite things to do as a DM, every new monster build they release helps. This is a no brainer for me. The money is sitting here waiting for it. |
| #9VaultDwellerFeb 05, 2010 7:21:39 | I haven't spent a lot of time or money on minis/tokens (yet I've bought quite a few Dungeon Tile sets), so it's something I'm interested in. I'm interested in the tokens, too, except that: 1) As noted, I've spent countless hours creating my own tokens. They all have unique graphics (official from MM where possible, other sources where not); they're all labeled and numbered; and I make enough of each monster to satisfy any encounter 2) 10 sheets for 256 pages of monsters? That sounds like most monster types will only have one or two tokens, so you don't have enough if you've got 5 or 6 of the same monster type in an encounter. I think Wizards should really be selling the tokens outside of a boxed set, so that people could buy multiples (like many of us do with Dungeon Tiles). |

The rules aren't simplified from what I gathered. I think Wizards should really be selling the tokens outside of a boxed set, so that people could buy multiples (like many of us do with Dungeon Tiles). Maybe a couple of months after the box is out? That way people will buy the box because the tokens won't be due for quite some time = profit. |
