My game group has fallen, and they can't get up!

Jan 09, 2012 9:21:40 It took me two years to talk my Brother into buying into 4th edition. I assured him that they were going to continue to support the game, and pointed to all of the supplements that were out, and ones in the works. I told him that they weren't going to stop short like they did with 3.5, and that they would come out with all the wonderful things that would make it worthwhile, and they would fill in all the corners and make it satisfying. I pointed to the worlds we love to play in. "We love Darksun, it's only a matter of time before we have Ravenloft." I said. Think of all the classes that still need power cards released. We love those for quick reference.

He bought in. A big investment. The first time I was able to talk him into buying completely in since 2nd edition. This week has put our gaming group in danger, just after we added in some teenagers to start teaching the next generation too. It's a tragedy. He's talking about going back to 2nd edition, one of our group only knows 3rd edition fluently and is still learning 4th ediition. Some of our group is just getting into D&D for the first time.

What do I tell them? How do I justify my sad sad promise? What do we tell the next generation of TRPG who are playing with us now? I don't know what to say or what to tell them. I don't know if I can even bring myself to buy another book. HELP!

You should likely just carry on with 4E as you planned. The next D&D is just barely getting started with outside of Wizards playtesting.

Your other option is to play 4E and present playtesting the next D&D as a huge opportunity. I've played D&D for almost 30 years and neither TSR nor Wizards has ever asked me to actually participate in playtesting before. For anyone who played 2E, this opportunity is huge: to have your voice heard and be part of the next D&D.

For new players, it is exciting. Shape the next D&D right from the very beginning.

So you have two options now instead of one.

Jan 09, 2012 9:42:26 It will be years before 4e is officially released. And there's no obligation to move onto 5e. Play what you like. It sucks when your game becomes unsupported, but that's been happening with increasing regularity since 1985.

I agree. We kind of went through this with Chainmail. We had a group who was heavily invested in Chainmail and it was great how the characters in Chainmail also had RPG stats for 3rd edition on them. Sadly that went away. We did find Warmachine to replace it with though, and it's fully supported and has a future.

Kravell: Even if a future edition were to be effected directly by our D&D group through playtesting or suggestions. I think the fear would be that any future edition will also be discontinued in favor of a newer shiny edition a few years beyond the release of that 5th edition. It makes one hesitate to make the investment. D&D was never marketed to the affluent, so it's difficult to imagine players wanting to invest in a new edition every few years. People just want to buy supplements and support for their current edition, not buy a new one.

I think the lack of future support will have an effect on our current game. I'm sure it will be the topic of discussion for the next game session.
