I don't know how we've missed this, but if you wanted to guess what divine class might make its way into PH3, the Necromancer is certainly a possibility.

I know we're "sure" as a community that Necromancers are Shadow characters ... but undead use Religion as their knowledge check, so that's not a stretch either.

I just wanted to put this out there because WotC likes to surprise us, and I like to out-maneuver them every once in a while.

Am I sure that the Necromancer will be Divine and in PH3? I'm gonna say "sure," because if I say "no" WotC will believe that they surprised me anyway. Not true.

It is also important to note that I'm "sure" that the Necromancer will be Shadow.

Sincerely,
Lord Dreadman

Nope, Necromancer is pretty much confirmed as shadow source, so PHB 4.

If the Necromancer is not Shadow, then I don't know what Shadow is.

The Monk was ki wasn't it?

Maybe Necromancer will be Divine and Illusionist will be Arcane.

The Monk was ki wasn't it?

Yes, and the main proponents of the Ki power source tended to read "Well, it might be psionic" as "I will **** your mother" and acted accordingly. Look how that turned out. Despite the RAAAAAGE over the idea of psionic monks.

Back this up. Thank you.

The worlds and monsters book that came out pre-4e described the Shadow source as manipulating necrotic energy and dread. The devs have mentioned multiple times their ideas of Necromancers using shadow. http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1071100 has some links for the info.

As for PHB4, that was pure speculation.

We know at the the DDI exclusive Assassin will be of the Shadow Power Source. I don't know where that necessarily leaves all the other Shadow classes though.

I don't think DDi exclusive classes (or races) count against the number available for the PHB, similar to the races and classes introduced in the PGs.

More of an educated guess than speculation, but yes.

Possible spoiler to Eberron Adventure Seekers of the Ashen Crown
There is a necromancer in the adventure. The character doesn't come with calss information, so don't pick up the adventure expecting to be able to create your own from scratch.

Divine is supposed to be from a god. Necromancy would be considered an abomination, and the gods wouldn't want to grant its use to their patrons.

A necromancer class is a major step for WotC, or at least it could be. For 4th ed., Wizards have basically come out and say 'Don't be evil', enforcing this idea with each supplement they release. MM are still full of unaligned or evil monsters (as they should be), evil gods still don't have much support, PCs are expected to be heroes, not villains. The 'evilest' option for a PC, a Tiefling Infernal Warlock, is still presented as a 'I'm not evil, just misunderstood!'

This good/evil isn't quite like the alignments. Evil per alignment is more of a 'not friendly' designation as apposed to 'baby eater' designation. To be honest-to-goodness evil, BOVD evil, you gotta take an extra step. Now a necromancer, well, it is hard to imagine a person enslaving the spirits of the dead, corrupting the bodies of the living, trading souls for power, as a 'good' person; eternal damnation seems to be par for the course for them. A necromancer ignores the natural laws of life. They represent the antithesis of heroics.

And maybe that is what the Shadow power source will become. With talk of necromancer, assassin, and hexblade being base classes, maybe the shadow source is going to be a haven for villains, not just anti-heroes.

Or Wizards could screw the whole darn thing up and make Shadow equate Emo.

Since Divine Classes always seem to work for all Gods I'd say that's a big "NO". I can't see a Necromancer devoting himself to Bahamut or any Lawful Good God for that matter (you don't think raising the corpses of dead people/enemies would be looked at as lawful good, right?)

Well, the good people at Woot have written a little something on their GenCon experience and they mention a Kender Necromancer. Of course, it's possible they're just being silly.

Its a hoax/joke as its Medium Sized Barbarian of some kind who is unaligned (as opposed to a Lawful Good Kender Necromancer)

I couldn't get the image to zoom, but not too surprising. It is Woot.
