| #1thadusthemightyFeb 06, 2009 7:08:56 | Looking under Undead power sources section on page 9 is this interesting tidbit. Still others animate undead threw the power of the divine, calling on fell gods to raise legions of bound wraiths to their will Sounds an awe full lot like 3.5 Master of Shrouds Hero's of Horror Prestige class. Seems like Divine Power is getting the Summon Undead Horde type of Necromancer Seems they are planning on splitting up necromancy among many of th power sources as well with Arcane, Shadow (the part of mentions working dim miracles no mention of undead summoning), psionic, and perhaps most surprisingly Ki as being "undead" power sources. |
| #2xi_maoFeb 07, 2009 20:38:59 | That's not necessarily true...I mean, you really can't take one line out of a Book designed to supplement the Monster Manual and use it as Rumor Fuel. It's good speculation, I'll agree, but I somehow doubt that it means for certain that there will be a divine powered Horde Necromancer. |
| #3sallaFeb 08, 2009 13:44:03 | I doubt we'll see a 'horde' necromancer at all, since having that many characters under one player's control will result in far too much time being taken on one person's turn. Odds are, it's either going to be reminiscent of the Beastmaster Ranger (one permanent creature) or the Summoning Wizard (you can have more than one, but they vanish between encounters), and either way, your creation and you are going to have to share the same pool of actions. Also note that this is a monster book, a DM source, and probably shouldn't be used too much for speculation on what PCs can (or may eventually) do. Enemies operate on different rules than PCs. |
| #4incenjucarFeb 09, 2009 23:10:34 | They're simply noting that there is more than one power source that create and/or control undead. This has been true throughout the history of the game. |
| #5pigknightFeb 09, 2009 23:29:40 | I thought necro was a confirmed shadow leader or controller. |
| #6vebrandssonFeb 09, 2009 23:36:53 | I thought necro was a confirmed shadow leader or controller. Never confirmed as far as I know. And one could easily see several sources getting something simular but I doubt it will happen. As far as horde summoning, it will probably be no better than a "wall of zombies" (the diablo 3 which doctor does this, its an interesting idea) or maybe the summoning of a zombie swarm. |
| #7WebsterFeb 10, 2009 12:07:09 | Moved... |
| #8ranadielFeb 10, 2009 12:17:54 | I thought necro was a confirmed shadow leader or controller. I beieve it is confirmed that necromancy utilized the shadow power source.....it isn't confirmed that they are actually going to make a necromancer class. |
| #9Tharag_BoccFeb 10, 2009 13:57:56 | I beieve it is confirmed that necromancy utilized the shadow power source.....it isn't confirmed that they are actually going to make a necromancer class. True, though it is confirmed that the designers over at WotC like necromancers. ![]() |
| #10Cpt_MichaFeb 10, 2009 13:59:55 | It's pretty much confirmed actually that Necromancers are going to be Shadow Power source. |
| #11doctorhookFeb 10, 2009 14:38:55 | It's pretty much confirmed actually that Necromancers are going to be Shadow Power source. We hardly even use the word "confirmed" properly in these debates, and now you want to use a "pretty much confirmed"? That's basically the same as "widely speculated". :P |
| #12pigknightFeb 10, 2009 23:48:01 | I thought I saw it in something... |
| #13Steely_DanFeb 11, 2009 2:27:52 | I was thinking the Necromancer might be a Shadow Leader and the Illusionist a Shadow Controller, but we don't know for sure about any of this yet. |
| #14pauln6Feb 11, 2009 7:48:39 | Yep and it was pretty much confirmed that sorcerers were arcane controllers... ![]() |
| #15ranadielFeb 11, 2009 8:06:12 | Yep and it was pretty much confirmed that sorcerers were arcane controllers... OMFG!!!!!!! They changed something from something they said! All speculation based on comments from WotC is completely wrong! WotC is a bunch of liars! We should close down this sub forum since everything in here is clearly wrong! ![]() |
| #16BolongoFeb 11, 2009 10:16:34 | Everything is true. Even false things? Even false things are true. How can that be? I don't know man, I didn't do it. |
| #17Cpt_MichaFeb 11, 2009 10:19:57 | We hardly even use the word "confirmed" properly in these debates, and now you want to use a "pretty much confirmed"? That's basically the same as "widely speculated". :P Multiple sources, and one of those if I recall correctly is already published. Do they want to lie with the FRPG? |
| #18lurkalotFeb 11, 2009 14:45:33 | Everything is true. Hail She What Done It All! |
| #19doctorhookFeb 11, 2009 15:24:26 | Multiple sources, and one of those if I recall correctly is already published. Do they want to lie with the FRPG? We're almost all expecting the Shadow power source to handle necromancy (at least, moreso than any other power source), because we were told that was the intention. We are also expecting that this necromancy aspect of the Shadow power source will be handled by a "Necromancer" class, because there has been scattered, hypothetical talk of such. However, none of this is "confirmed" at all, which is what makes it speculation. (I never implied that the speculation was incorrect, btw.) Mostly though, I was arguing semantics with you, Micha. :P You see, on these boards, we throw the term "confirmed" around a lot, and that can cause a lot of headaches. The actual fact is that nothing is 100% confirmed until the books leave the manufacturing stage and enter distribution, because things can and do change at all stages of product development. A great recent example is the Sorcerer/Controller debacle; we had a reasonably solid "confirmation" that the Sorcerer would be a Controller, but we now know that that fact changed at some point it the development cycle. Even at this point it's possible that the Sorcerer has received some eleventh-hour changes, although it's certainly unlikely. (One might say that what we know about the Sorcerer is about 99.99% confirmed at this point; barring something unforeseeable, the Sorcerer will probably appear in PH2 the same as it was previewed to us.) Anyway, given this arrangement, when one says that something is "pretty much confirmed" when referring to hypothetical future ideas, what they really mean is "speculated to be". The fact is, there's not even confirmation that there will even be a class called "Necromancer", because all we have is confirmation that some folks at WotC enjoy thinking about the concept of a necromancer. Since we have no confirmation of the existence of a Necromancer class, we therefore have at least as little confirmation that said class will be from the Shadow power source. (Names can change in development; remember the "T for Avenger?" debate?) Speculation, not confirmation. Saying what you mean is a valuable skill. |
| #20belladonna5012Feb 12, 2009 1:25:58 | Necromancer-as-leader would make too much sense. I always did think that healing magic would be a natural fit for those who practice the magic of life and death. I do expect it to use the Shadow power source, given necromancy is dark and stuff, don'tcha know. Then again, so are dark pact warlocks, but every power source gets to vary a little bit. |
| #21cadfanFeb 12, 2009 3:06:18 | 1. We already have four Divine classes, and Divine Power seems to be in the works already, which doesn't leave time for more. 2. We've been told that undead are related to the Shadowfell and the Shadow power source. 3. Shadow material so far hasn't used undead, but it has used negative energy, which is associated with the undead. 4. Undead monsters have a connection to the Shadowfell. 5. Shadow power has a connection to the Shadowfell. So... to the extent that there will be a necromancer at all, it will probably be a Shadow class. |
| #22vharuckFeb 12, 2009 8:07:56 | I think in this case, the word "divine" was simply used as an appropraite word for describing the fluff. It might not have been meant as the specific keyword [Divine]. |
| #23doctorhookFeb 12, 2009 13:47:07 | Necromancer-as-leader would make too much sense. I always did think that healing magic would be a natural fit for those who practice the magic of life and death. Agreed! A couple months ago, in another thread, I posted a draft of a concept for a (Shadow Leader) Necromancer's "healing word"-type power. This is just an example of how such a power might operate: "Vampiric Word" would be an attack (Necromancer Feature, Standard Action), usable twice per encounter, which damages one enemy for 1d6 + Intelligence modifier [Necrotic] damage and heals one ally for Surge + (Necromancer's) Intelligence modifier HP. Increase damage to 2d6 + Int at 6th level, 3d6 + Int at 11th level, 4d6 + Int at 16th level, 5d6 + Int at 21st level, and 6d6 + Int at 26th level. (The part in red I added now.) We also discussed the notion of this power being able to heal undead allies (of course!), and that this class would also grant a lot of "false life" temporary HP to allies with its various abilities and powers. |
