#1 fastwolf Jan 09, 2012 9:33:04	It took me two years to talk my Brother into buying into 4th edition.  I assured him that they were going to continue to support the game, and pointed to all of the supplements that were out, and ones in the works.  I told him that they weren't going to stop short like they did with 3.5, and that they would come out with all the wonderful things that would make it worthwhile, and they would fill in all the corners and make it satisfying.  I pointed to the worlds we love to play in.  "We love Darksun, it's only a matter of time before we have Ravenloft." I said.  Think of all the classes that still need power cards released.  We love those for quick reference. He bought in.  A big investment.  The first time I was able to talk him into buying completely in since 2nd edition.  This week has put our gaming group in danger, just after we added in some teenagers to start teaching the next generation too.  It's a tragedy.  He's talking about going back to 2nd edition, one of our group only knows 3rd edition fluently and is still learning 4th ediition.  Some of our group is just getting into D&D for the first time.  What do I tell them?  How do I justify my sad sad promise?  What do we tell the next generation of TRPG who are playing with us now?  I don't know what to say or what to tell them.  They have no place to spend their D&D dollar as I cannot recommend spending money on a dead edition that isn't even going to be complete when they drop the edition.  I don't know if I can even bring myself to buy another book with things so uncertain.  HELP!

#3 kalontas Jan 09, 2012 9:47:23	You're not alone there. I have only rather recently started getting 4E material, and guess what - I managed to get majority of it, I liked it so much. And now I'm told the new edition is coming. I am happy to have possibility of taking part in its development process, but having to relearn the rules again is not entertaining me very much. My advice? Hold on to 4E for the time being. Maybe even through first year or two of 5E (taking three years total). Only then start thinking of upgrading to the newest edition. That's what I'd do - but I'm always behind everyone on stuff like this.

Thank you We've been alternating between Shadowrun and D&D (i.e. every other weekend) for a good year now.  The Nentir Vale game hasn't been going as long as the Shadowrun game, but we love them both equally.  Shadowrun has been on hold for a while, so we're playing more 4th Edition. I think that the idea is that even if we had input on a new edition, it would have to be completely backwards compatible with 4th edition without conversion in order to make everyone remain invested in our current game, and want to support future edition products.  It's really the only way that would accommodate all of our players.  At least two of our players were so disgusted by the thought of a new edition that I fear they will leave the game no matter what happens. I am sure this will be the topic of discussion at our next gaming session.  I have no idea what to tell my fellow players.  Saying; "stick with it, it's a year before 4th ed. is discontinued." sounds so disingenuous.  If our group playtested... that might make us feel invested in a new edition, but how would we know that a 5th edition wouldn't be replaced in a few short years, and like 4th edition, it would be missing completion, supplements, future products, power cards etc.
