So, I was reading the product description of the Draconomicon I, and it says it will introduce 3 new chromatic dragons.
What colors are left? Purple, Yellow, and Orange Dragons?
Ugh.

i thought "Chromatic" ragons would be somthing of metallic or somthing, Like Silver, Gold, and Copper or Crome or somthing of the sort, not more basic Colors.

That's what "chromatic" means. Chromium (AKA chrome) is called "chromium" because its compounds vary so much in color.

Oh great - purple dragons!

I can see it now - they will appeal to small children with their love of games and singing irritating songs and anyone over the age of 5 will have to make constant Death saving throws until they either die or get out of range

There was a Purple dragon in a Richard Knaak series. It was very powerful and would not have been good with the kiddies...

chro·mat·ic /kroʊˈmætɪk, krə-/
–adjective
1. pertaining to color or colors.

Chromium (pronounced /ˈkroʊmiəm/) is a chemical element which has the symbol Cr and atomic number 24. It is a steely-gray, lustrous, hard metal that takes a high polish and has a high melting point. It is also odourless, tasteless, and malleable. Chromium was named after the Greek word "Chrōma" (χρωμα) meaning color, because of the many colorful compounds made from it.

Eh, I was just expanding on your explanation. Besides, I think the greek root is an important element in the word! ;)

does no one here play Forgotten Realms? purple dragon knights (of Cormyr)? Finally having stats for purple dragons (with the exception for dragon compendium) would be awesome!

I heard speculation that Purple Dragons would be the 4E incarnation of the creatures once known as "Deep Dragons". Any word on this?

Anyone care to guess what the corresponding breath weapons will be?

Gray Dragon: Force breath or lava breath that leaves difficult terrain
Brown Dragon: Earth shock wave(replace its claws with hammers) or spit rocks
Purple Dragon: Purple acid cloud or thunder based breath

I haven't heard anything official on this, but it would hardly be the first time that I missed something.

Purple Dragon: Purple acid cloud or thunder based breath

Gray Dragons- Some kind of mist corrosive mist that does slight damage initially and does a lot over time
Brown Dragons- A muddy acidic substance that melts rocks and does slight damage while stuck on a creature. Also decreases movement speed.
Purple Dragons- It breathes out little children that sing annoying songs preventing bards from using their spells while giving everyone headaches as well reducing their mental stats. :P .....Or for something a bit more serious, it has a sonic breath weapon....I guess. Purple is really hard to come up with serious ideas for.

(had to adjust the spelling, sorry for an incorrect quote)

In D&D the Chromatic dragons have always been the base color dragons, and the Metallic dragons have always referred to the metal colored dragons. Then there's the Crystal (Psionic) dragons. I think 3rd came up with another category or two.

But Chromatic, within a D&D setting, has always meant the reds, whites, greens, blacks, etc.

Brown dragon
Breath weapon: Acid
Terrain: Desert
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Image: Wizards.com image
Notes: Described in Monsters of Faerûn
Ferocious, though intelligent beasts from the Forgotten Realms campaign setting which reside in the wastes of Eastern Mulhorand. They view humans as food and think it peculiar to talk with one's meal, but they talk to almost anything else. They do not have wings and cannot fly.

Orange dragon
Breath weapon: Explosive oil
Terrain: Forest
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Notes: Described in the Dragon Compendium Vol. 1; appears in the module, Under the Storm Giant's Castle
Crafty predators who attack from ambush. They prefer to lurk in deep rivers and lakes. They are highly territorial and natural tyrants who seek to bring creatures in their area under their control. They bear a passing resemblance to a monstrous, orange alligator.

Purple dragon
Breath weapon: Binding paste.
Terrain: Plains
Alignment: Lawful Evil
Notes: Described in the Dragon Compendium Vol. 1
Long, lean bodied dragons with deep purple to midnight black scales. These fancy themselves to be the lords of all dragonkind, believing themselves arisen from the long dead sister of Tiamat. They are among the most intelligent of dragons, able to gather and control vast numbers of minions. Their energy-related attacks make them powerful fighters.

Yellow dragon
Breath weapon: Salt water
Terrain: Aquatic and coastal areas
Alignment: Chaotic Evil
Notes: Described in the Dragon Compendium Vol. 1
Solitary and secretive dragons who prefer to lay in wait for prey to stumble into carefully-prepared traps instead of hunting actively. They are among the most agile and quick of all dragons.
To clarify their breath weapon, it's a watery blast that contains a highly corrosive sodium compound. They adore water and often spend their free time playing in it.

The Purple Dragon actually comes from Thauglor, a great wyrm black dragon that once inhabitated the forests that would later be called Cormyr. Very old black dragon scales fade to a deep violet color.
