Out of curiosity, what is giving some of you a negative impression?

Yes, it seems to be a low budget movie. Is that all? Some independent films are quite good. Even special effects can be done well on a reasonably small budget because of computer graphics.

It is difficult to have a good story in a fantasy setting because social interractions are often an afterthought after contriving excuses to display some special effect.

But tv shows like Heroes and Dresden Files did a good job at weaving human interests with transhuman capabilities.

I mean come on let's face facts, the first Dungeons and Dragons movie was terrible, I haven't seen the second one but I've heard dark rumors. What shows do we have to draw from that's even remotely D&D based? There's that newer one that was a spoof, like we need more of those. Then you got crap like Xena and Hercules (I'm sure that there are hardcore rapid fans in the mists I will tick off by saying this but it's offal).

There isn't really any good band of merry adventures type D&D based shows or movies, period. Sure there's Lord of the Rings from which arguably D&D sprang, but that's Tolkein. Sure there's Conan and Braveheart, Gladiator, and others but they are mostly stories of a single hero (based on real life or otherwise) with fantasy style elements.

In fact one movie that I actually loved and didn't think I would at first was King Arthur, one of the movies I can think of that had a cool "team feel" to it. That's what D&D is about, the team. The Fighter, wizard, rogue, cleric premise.

And that really underscores the problem. We see Dungeons and Dragons as an archetype, an adventure of epic proportions played out by 4 or 5 heroes who each have their own iconic role to play. The whole concept of 5 buddies hanging out and going around killing stuff for gold and treasure is kind of preposterous.

We can all argue that we're doing it for some noble reason, righting wrongs, saving villages from Dragons, etc... but when it comes down to it, all the good multi role "buddy movies" have been done. A Dungeons and dragons movie will never, ever stand up to Lord of the Rings or even Star Wars for that matter (arguably the greatest multi role adventure of all time).

Your best bet is accepting that and finding joy and D&D elements in movies like Outlander, Robin Hood, Serenity, etc. The new Season of the Witch movie actually looks great.

There will never be a truly epic, well acted, expertly written, smart adaption of D&D. It isn't going to happen. No studio is interested in a buddy movie without a clear cut hero based on a game, even one as iconic as D&D. Lord of the Rings is as close as we're gonna get.

Consider this a challenge to prove to me otherwise all you fledgling directors out there!
