| #1ggroyJan 26, 2010 21:49:15 | Anybody know anything about these D&D titles, scheduled for a Sept/Oct 2010 release (according to amazon.com)? - "Rules Compendium: A 4th Edition Supplement" www.amazon.com/Rules-Compendium-Suppleme... - "Player's Essentials: Heroes of the Fallen Lands: A 4th Edition D&D Supplement" www.amazon.com/Players-Essentials-Heroes... - "Dungeon Master's Kit: An Essential 4th Edition D&D Kit" www.amazon.com/Dungeon-Masters-Kit-Essen... - "D&D Gamma World Roleplaying Game: A D&D Genre Setting (4th Edition D&D)" www.amazon.com/Gamma-World-Roleplaying-G... |
| #2Dire_BareJan 26, 2010 21:53:03 | Wow! I like the idea of a Gamma World setting using D&D rules. I hope we see some similar treatments on some other classic TSR/WotC games like Star Frontiers and Urban Arcana! I'll bet we'll get more info during D&D Experience this weekend. |
| #3Silver_BlazeJan 26, 2010 22:03:04 | Huh, Gamma World is actually getting a 4e supplement. I would have never seen that one coming (despite all of the hoo-hah it has received here every so often). I wonder what this means for other campaign settings, since we are getting two settings (Gamma World is more than just a mere setting though) in 2010, perhaps this will carry through to next year. |
| #4MarandahirJan 26, 2010 22:57:20 | That reminds me, wasn't there this flamer a while back who called us all idiots for thinking Dark Sun was the only setting coming out this year? It was the guy promoting Greyhawk 2010-12, claiming it to be confirmed. I guess PART of his claim came true. Though I can hardly see Gamma World called a setting, rather than a different take on the 4e D&D rules system. |
| #5DragolothJan 26, 2010 22:58:30 | The gamma world and DM's kit are both listed as games, but the other two are paperback books. Maybe these are board games or the new miniatures format. Just speculation I know but with ravenloft coming out with a boardgame maybe gamma world is following suit. |
| #6Duke5150Jan 26, 2010 23:50:47 | Looking forward to all of them, but especially the Rules Compendium. Maybe it will clear up all that RAI crap. Gamma world also sounds fun. |
| #7celticmuttJan 27, 2010 3:26:16 | That reminds me, wasn't there this flamer a while back who called us all idiots for thinking Dark Sun was the only setting coming out this year? It was the guy promoting Greyhawk 2010-12, claiming it to be confirmed. A while back? Heh, try last week. Or maybe two weeks ago. Anyways, real recent. I hope Gamma World is an actual setting/system, instead of a board game or minis though. |
| #8nerdcoreJan 27, 2010 5:38:53 | This is certanly an unconvencional bunch of titles. The DM kit is the on that mostly calls my atention, because it can be awsome, but can be a complete waste of money aswell. I just hope it is a great DM product as the Dungeon Delve and DM Screen |
| #9MarandahirJan 27, 2010 7:37:35 | That reminds me, wasn't there this flamer a while back who called us all idiots for thinking Dark Sun was the only setting coming out this year? It was the guy promoting Greyhawk 2010-12, claiming it to be confirmed. At the rate this forum posts and moves, and at the rate my mind runs, a week or two IS a while back. ![]() I'm interested in how Gamma World will work. Perhaps this means they'll be doing the same for d20 Modern, Oriental Adventures, Swashbuckling Adventures, Spelljammer, etc later on, rather than releasing them as actual "settings" but as themes? |
| #10odinfellhammerJan 27, 2010 8:43:44 | Imagine using both dark sun and gamma world together. ![]() |
| #11celticmuttJan 27, 2010 8:45:43 |
Well, one of the last developer chats or interviews, maybe it was even the Keith Baker chat on Dark Sun, implied that they were re-looking at Spelljammer as a potential stand alone 4e supplement as I recall. |
| #12MarandahirJan 27, 2010 18:52:31 | Imagine using both dark sun and gamma world together.
Double fan-gasm. |
| #13Silver_BlazeJan 28, 2010 9:31:26 | I wonder what this means for new settings in the future. Will we see a standard D&D setting and a D&D Genre setting each year? Because that could be awesome. BTW, Birthright would make a very good D&D Genre setting, IMO. |
| #14Duke5150Jan 28, 2010 10:31:10 | Everyone knows what setting I'm rooting for. But I'll also vote for Mystara again. I'd also enjoy a more modern setting. |
| #15thescalesoffateJan 28, 2010 19:11:05 | Am I just misreading, or does the Players' Essentials listing say it's a 352 page paperback? O.o |
| #16areolaJan 28, 2010 19:22:32 | Am I just misreading, or does the Players' Essentials listing say it's a 352 page paperback? O.o Yes, and it's for newbies (refers to the number of pages) |
| #17MarandahirJan 28, 2010 19:26:15 | Am I just misreading, or does the Players' Essentials listing say it's a 352 page paperback? O.o Not just for newbies. The classes are featuring new builds that aren't in any of the previously published books. Guess not ALL the new builds will be Setting books or Power books. |
| #18NekoazuJan 29, 2010 8:03:57 | Just wanted to note that the catalogue now lists products up to the end of 2010. Including PHB Races: Humans for 12/21/10 and Player Essentials: Heroes of Forgotten Kingdoms (11/16/10) featuring new cleric/druid/paladin/ranger/warlock builds as well as new racial traits for dragonborn/drow/half-elves/half-orcs/tieflings. I do hope that the paperback is a mistake though. |
| #19ignis_fatuusJan 29, 2010 11:37:31 | A clear explanation of what the essentials line is about can be found here! |
| #20zyzyx1701dJan 29, 2010 12:42:32 |
It looks like they're trying to keep down costs to draw in new players, though at the expense of the longevity of the books. |
| #21areolaJan 29, 2010 13:42:23 | Are all the paperback books smaller sized than the usual core hardbacks? That would explain the page numbers.. |
| #22NekoazuJan 29, 2010 15:40:30 | How much of a cost differance would there be between paperback and hardcover anyway? Wouldn't be more than a few € as far as I know. |
| #23Ash2DustJan 29, 2010 17:18:31 |
I'm not convinced. As far as I can tell, the forum uses the term build to mean variable class features like a Ranger's fighting style and a Sorcerer's spell source. In other words, actual mechanics that effect the entire playability of a class. On the toher hand, WotC seems to define build as a set of suggested build options to take to achieve a desired goal. If WotC says there's new builds, I'm assuming that to mean a block of text saying "to be this kind of rogue, takes these feats and these powers and this Rogue Tactic." While not entirely unuseful, it's not really necessary or desired by the experienced player, I think. Unless they do in fact mean new class features, in which case I'll probably get them off DDI anyway. |
| #24MarandahirJan 29, 2010 18:24:02 |
When they introduce a new "build," they do mean exactly that: take these feats, these powers, and this class feature. Sometimes, this means that the class feature isn't new: for example, Trickster, Aerialist, and Duellist (Class Acts: Rogue) all use the Artful Dodger choice for Rogue Tactics. However, each time a new one has been introduced, it introduced new powers and feats to go with that new play style, so while it might not be a new class feature, it will certainly be new feats and powers, and that in itself is desireable. That said, a new class feature as the centre of the new build is inherently more desireable than just a new build using an old class feature, but the powers and the feats are the meat and potatoes of the build, while the feature is the vegetables. Of course, in Newfoundland, the meat is used as flavouring for the vegetables, but you know what I mean… |
| #25NekoazuJan 30, 2010 5:15:24 | The description in the catalogue meantions:Each class comes with a set of new powers, class features, paragon paths, epic destinies *snip* this book presents expanded information and racial traits for some of the game’s most popular races So yes. It looks like we do get new class features and the like in the Player Essentials books. |
