| #1Omni-WyvernilMay 25, 2009 8:57:58 | I have the feeling that since Divine and Primal are getting expanded in PHB3, that they'll end up adding new Martial classes eventually (maybe in PHB4). The trouble is finding archetypes and concepts which aren't already covered by the Fighter, Rogue, Ranger, or Warlord (or by non-martial classes that rely heavily on physical prowess like the Barbarian or Monk, for that matter). Some ideas that have been bandied about: Swashbuckler: Has occasionally been suggested as a Defender or Controller, but the archetype seems to be adequately filled out by the Rogue. They might introduce a more swashbuckling-oriented build (focusing on rapier use) in Martial Power 2, but other than that... Brawler: A "martial monk" concept which focuses more on street fighting and grappling. This might already be covered by the Monk, though (they don't all have to be kung-fu types). Intimidator: One possible Martial Controller concept might be one which works in a reverse fashion to the Warlord (who inspires his allies through sheer force of will); a character that intimidates his enemies and drives them together or apart through sheer force of personality. Not sure what this would be called, though. Samurai: The samurai might be reworked as a Martial Defender class with some controller elements, focused on defeating several enemies at once but not as durable as the Fighter. The half-class variant they mentioned (like the gladiator or assassin) is more likely, though. Just like with the new Divine and Primal classes, it's a bit hard to imagine where they might go with new Martial classes. What do you think about this? I think that if Martial is expanded into six classes, that the two new classes will be a Controller and another Defender. It'd be a bit strange to come up with a Martial Leader concept that isn't the Warlord. |
| #2lucifernietzscheMay 25, 2009 9:52:56 | This is going to open a barrel of purple worms... I already suggested something like an "anti-warlord" as the framework of a martial controller class. I advise you just drop the idea now because those who dislike it will quickly resort to personal attacks against you because they have no real basis for claiming it wouldn't work. - Now, on topic...I'd like to see more martial classes. But I don't believe we will. The four we have are simply too broad when one includes the variety of builds that are likely to be available eventually. With the right build...you can be any kind of warrior from history or fantasy as it is. |
| #3McnancyMay 25, 2009 12:49:10 | The thing is, the current Martial classes are so general and overarching in nature that any new Martial classes would have to be very specific in their archetype in order to stand out. For example, if they made a Duelist class it would be either be completly focused on using a certain weapon a certain way and wearing certain armor or would just be redundant. So I could see more Martial classes, but they would have to be specialists. |
| #4brotherjgizmoMay 25, 2009 12:56:13 | I don't think we will see more martial classes, they are so far the preferred power source for damage and the first to get a second --- Power book. Also as Mcnancy said, they are broad enough to incorporate any idea so far. |
| #5ignizMay 25, 2009 15:30:38 | A weapon master, no class really focuses on mastering the use of multiple weapon types to optimally fight in combat. The Fighter can't make effective use of Ranged weapons The Rogue and Ranger can use a variety of weapons, but have their limitations and their fighting styles and class flavourings detract from builds. The focus of the class would be mastery of weapons and combat. They'd be more heavily armoured than Rangers and Rogues and not defensively orientated like the Fighter, and clearly not a Leader. Failing that, a less phsyical and more mental combatant. Someone who relies more on mental alaracity than their martial prowess. This could lead into swashbuckling or duelist archetypes, along with more other more cunning characters. |
| #6OrzelMay 25, 2009 15:59:23 | Maybe a dedicated grappler if anything. Remove the size limit and have minor action attack powers It could go the regular hold and slam route or use the showboat pro wrestler option and use flying elbow drops. "I power bomb the dragon." |
| #7stogoeMay 25, 2009 16:48:23 | A weapon master, no class really focuses on mastering the use of multiple weapon types to optimally fight in combat. What role, exactly, would that be? I only ask because what you ask seems to have the purpose of filling many roles. |
| #8NautilusMay 25, 2009 17:29:25 | What types of hero for PHB4? You can pencil Shadow in, and I'd say Psionic is a near certainty as well. The other two will be Martial or Arcane. While I understand the "Martial's tapped out" sentiment, I'm not about to write off the Wizards R&D department just yet. If anyone's gonna come up with Martial classes 5 and 6, it's a bunch of guys who get paid to think and talk about it 8 hours a day. If they do, then my picks are a Martial Controller (showing that it can be done!) and a plate-wearing Martial Defender. |
| #9DragolothMay 25, 2009 17:34:54 | Mayhaps a martial class that doesn't fill a specific role. A man-at-arms type of character. Class abilities would include; Weapon Aptitude: the ability to use any weapon feats on any weapon (weapon focus, and other weapon feats, would work on axes, maces, bows, swords, ect... while only taking the feat once). Weapon mastery: Taking superion weapon training granty proficency with all superion weapons. Possibly as a minor action you could change the focus of the feats. All powers would work melee or ranged and have the range of weapon. Power selection would define your current role. The one stipulation of the class could be the inability to multiclass. |
| #10Janx_14May 25, 2009 18:01:05 | What types of hero for PHB4? You can pencil Shadow in, and I'd say Psionic is a near certainty as well. The other two will be Martial or Arcane. Yes..because its so hard for the fighter to choose one feat... |
| #11brotherjgizmoMay 25, 2009 18:21:36 | Honestly I hope martial gets no new classes, and that Arcane get no new classes as well (but I feel much more strongly about martial). They already come out ahead of the other power sources in feat and power selection and are slowly becoming the kings of this edition. |
| #12NautilusMay 25, 2009 18:25:53 | Yes..because its so hard for the fighter to choose one feat... He also has to be STR 15 CON 15. If you don't want a high Con build for your fighter, it's not as easy as just picking a feat. |
| #13Janx_14May 25, 2009 18:56:31 | Then its just better handled as a fighter 'weapon talent' replacement, since the 2 newest ones both encourage lighter armours. Do we need a whole new class just for an armour proficiency? |
| #14calronmoonflowerMay 25, 2009 19:43:50 | Some ideas that have been bandied about: Most of these concepts can be variations of already existing classes without much effort. They probably just need new powers and maybe a new class feature.
|
| #15NautilusMay 25, 2009 19:54:25 | Then its just better handled as a fighter 'weapon talent' replacement, since the 2 newest ones both encourage lighter armours. Probably not, but I was thinking of plate proficiency being a starting point for the hypothetical Martial Defender class, not the only thing that would separate it from a fighter. I'd like to see more plate & scale proficient classes showing up in PHB3 and 4. Those classes proficient in lighter armor are having their time in the sun, and good for them, but it'd be nice to have something other than a paladin to pick from if you want your PC to start out in plate without having to mess round with feats and the like. |
| #16BelorinMay 25, 2009 23:57:14 | How about a knight? Knight – defender Armor: cloth, leather, hide, chainmail, scale, plate, light shield, heavy shield Weapons: simple melee, military melee, superior melee, simple ranged, military ranged. Have them specialize in polearms or double weapons. Bel |
| #17CaericMay 26, 2009 0:00:55 | I actually attempted to make up three martial classes. The three were: Brawler, martial striker Knight, martial defender (leaning to Controller) Scout, martial controller So what did I intend the scout to do? Why, fire arrows like a madman. At everything, anything. Not to hit -- to move his foes (slide attacks). To hit their feet (slowing them). Not like a ranger, that aims precisely; but wildly and accurate enough to get the effect. Plus, a Scout would be entirely ranged attacks. I could see a Martial Power book giving a build using thrown weapons, but traditionally I envision crossbow and bow as primary choices. |
| #18ignizMay 26, 2009 4:23:36 | What role, exactly, would that be? I only ask because what you ask seems to have the purpose of filling many roles. I think the powers would largely dictate that. I used to play Fighters like this and would consider them battlefield controllers, so I'd put them somewhere between Controller and Leader, or maybe just... I dunno... Martial Controller. ;) I keep meaning to write this class up, but they're tacticaly minded but extremely proactive in combat. Its difficult to explain the playstyle, but its somewhere between all 4 classes. You can mimic the playstyle with Rogues/Ranger and Warlord and focusing on readied actions. Keep melee enemies away whilst keeping close to ranged and artillery, deny movement with readied actions and cany use of attacks. So i'm part Leader, part Striker, part Controller, and no single class really suits the needs of the class. |
| #19stogoeMay 26, 2009 17:10:48 | Mayhaps a martial class that doesn't fill a specific role. 4e Class Design - UR Doin It Wrong. Seriously, this is antithetical to the core values of 4e design. Classes have Roles, and a class that can be all of them is just bringing back the problem of CoDzilla. Igniz, what you ask for is simply ridiculous. A "King of All Trades" class can't work without overshadowing everything in its sight, and really neither can a Jack. |
| #20Authw8May 27, 2009 0:13:38 | I would like to see a martial striker based on using two-handed weapons. This seems like a conceptual area that nothing fills so far. Even though great weapon fighters can be built like strikers, I would still like to see an actual striker, with things like mobility and a cool bonus damage feature. |
| #21ignizMay 27, 2009 5:02:33 | Igniz, what you ask for is simply ridiculous. A "King of All Trades" class can't work without overshadowing everything in its sight, and really neither can a Jack. Erm... you're the ony saying its a King of all Trades, its not, and if a Jack of All trades can't overshadow everything... what's your problem? The archtype should be filled, a weapon master who focuses on a balanced approach to combat. If I say he's primarily a Controller, with secondary role depending on build option, is that okay with you? Do I have your approval to make my suggestion? |
| #22stogoeMay 27, 2009 7:09:11 | What you've said earlier in the thread is that you want a weapon master that can fill every role. That's certainly never going to happen. And I'll never be convinced that a Martial controller is viable, except maybe as a one-trick pony, which isn't enough to build an entire class around. So no, I don't think I'll ever be convinced that what you want is possible or balanced, although you can do a little of it by just going Fighter/Ranger PMC. At least that has a cost, and isn't a "Which party member will I overshadow this combat?" class. |
| #23DragolothMay 27, 2009 10:39:16 | Actually a jack of all trades, while being able to do everything, would excell at nothing. Someone who is a little bit of every role will never out damage a striker, protect better than a defender, buff/heal better than a leader or out control a controller. While you don't believe a martial controller is viable, the melee druid shows that melee control is viable. Who better to control in melee than a martial character. I still like my idea of a class that can use any weapon at any time. Spears and picks to immobilize, hammers to knock prone, light blades to inflict ongoing damage, bows/crossbows to slow from far away, nets to slow up close. A martila controller seems totally reasonable. |
| #24Dragon9May 27, 2009 10:40:52 | ZOMG Th3Y n33D 4 M4rTi4L CONT0LL3R!!!!!one!!11 (just kidding...) |

A martila controller seems totally reasonable. Exactly, Jack of all trades isn't overshadowing people, its doing bits of what others do as needed. This is not a buff or healer so it can't overshadow the leader, ever, even if it does use tactical movement. Tactical movement is also part of the striker role, though it tends to be their own movement which is effected, there's also nothing to suggest they'll ever do more damage than a striker. They will however be able to constantly engage the enemy and make a nuisance of themself, much like the defender/controller, but there's nothing to suggest they'll be a tin can tank, but there's no good reason for them to be a total pushover either. Give them powers that target areas or groups, or otherwise dehibilitate people in melee or range and you've pretty much got yourself a Martial Controller who makes sense and fills a void. At the moment, you'd have to be Helf hybrid PMC to even attempt all this and level 10, and you'd still fail for the most part. |
| #26brotherjgizmoMay 27, 2009 18:03:48 | Exactly, Jack of all trades isn't overshadowing people, its doing bits of what others do as needed. That looks like some sort of hybrid class multiclassed into something else. |
| #27strudel_lumpycakesMay 27, 2009 19:39:48 | The druid proves that a melee controller is a feasible concept. One archetype that hasn't been covered yet is the skirmisher/harrier. The type who leaps around the battlefield at staggering speed, not to reach a single target (like the monk), but to get a jab at as many foes as possible. As opposed to jumping atop the Big Bad and murdering the hell out of him, this guy might sprint past six or so mooks, slashing ankles, smashing kneecaps, shoving the unwary, tripping the headless. The two builds I imagine would be the Raider, who focuses of the AoE damage angle of the controller, crushing dozens of minions in a single, brutal charge, and the Harrier, who would daze and hinder his foes, sliding them about the battle field with a half-dozen conditions on their head. As a final thought: There doesn't need to be an unfililled archtype for a class to be made. Just look at the wizard: the dude who casts spells. What differentiates him from the sorcerer? The sorcerer is more chaotic and occasionally dragon-like. Why can't there be a Martial class like the fighter, but more focused on heavy armor and entrenchment? Or trickery and unpredictability? |
| #28Authw8May 27, 2009 20:36:10 | As opposed to jumping atop the Big Bad and murdering the hell out of him, this guy might sprint past six or so mooks, slashing ankles, smashing kneecaps, shoving the unwary, tripping the headless. Seems like tripping the headless would be somewhat unnecessary, unless it was undead or something. :D |
| #29Dragon9May 27, 2009 23:56:12 | And besides... it's just so... MEAN. I mean, come on, they're already headless. Do you really need to trip them also? |
| #30e105zetaMay 28, 2009 0:58:39 | Maybe a dedicated grappler if anything. Remove the size limit and have minor action attack powers I would wholly support a barehanded grappling pro-wrestler class. "Oh my god, he just pile-drived the Lich lord!" |
| #31Dragon9May 28, 2009 7:46:30 | The question is, what role would a dedicated grappler be? Defender? Maybe. Some other defender classes only tie up one critter at a time. (which is a real shame... they all should be sticky to more than one critter IMHO) Striker? Also plausible. Sticks to one opponent until defeated and causes soem status issues, a la warlock/sorcerer/etc. Leader? Meh... not really. A flashy pro wrestling type could be. His flashy moves are a morale boost to his teammates, etc. Controller? No. Area attacks for a grappler are out and unless he morphs into a flying spaghetti monster he can only grapple one critter at a time, so he fails in the basic tenants of Controllerdom. |
| #32alitainMay 30, 2009 22:16:28 | Honestly I hope martial gets no new classes, and that Arcane get no new classes as well (but I feel much more strongly about martial). They already come out ahead of the other power sources in feat and power selection and are slowly becoming the kings of this edition. I agree, except for one thing. They need to work out a Martial Controller to actually fill all the spots. After that I wouldn't care about any other martial classes, not that I'd be against them, just wouldn't really care if they didn't do any. But they should fill all the roles first. |
| #33Dragon9May 30, 2009 22:53:50 | Why do they have to fill all the spots? OCD? ![]() |
| #34jlaurhughes_dupMay 30, 2009 23:07:28 | I notice that no one remembered to read the R&D article (Design&Development) that stated as much for the Samurai being similar to the Feat groups of the Gladiator & Assassin. Now, if we have a great mechanical concept for a samurai, we'll run with it, but right now the thinking is that it's more compelling to play a paladin, a fighter, or maybe even a cleric or warden, and place samurai mechanics and options on top of that. |
| #35fenrir7139May 31, 2009 1:10:16 | I don't really get where they got Warden from, of all things... unless they meant Warlord? |
| #36mkillMay 31, 2009 11:34:34 | A wrestler / brawler would be an interesting class, and it wouldn't take its inspiration from unusual sources like fighting games and show wrestling. I'd even spice it with some fighting game staples like throwing fireballs or freezing the enemy. It's not strictly martial but who cares. Another viable class is the Swashbuckler. It would take its inspiration from Zorro, pirate movies, the 3 Musketeers, and the cloak and sword genre. There are some similarities to the rogue, but it would be a defender, not a striker. The fighting style is acrobatic, but it lacks the thievery aspect. Light armor is a given, as is the rapier as main weapon. There are several options for the off-hand, either no weapon, a parrying dagger, a second rapier, or a small shield (buckler). The mark would be a taunt. The punishment effect could be that enemies take psychic damage if they miss an ally of the swashbuckler (or similar). The main difference to the fighter are the main stats: Dex as primary, and Intelligence and Charisma as secondaries. |
| #37essence_acidMay 31, 2009 12:44:44 | How 'bout the swordsage or warblade? |
| #38Omni-WyvernilMay 31, 2009 12:55:35 | How 'bout the swordsage or warblade? Warblade pretty much got absorbed by the Fighter. Swordsage might be a more viable concept depending on how much of it ended up turning into the monk. There could be a niche for a lightly armored, agile swordmaster/weaponmaster who doesn't rely on two-weapon fighting, though whether it would be martial, psionic, or something else I'm not sure. Swordmage and Avenger probably come closest to this right now, but don't quite fit. Monks might be turned into this depending on how viable weapon-wielding monks are (and if there are feats to let them use their powers with additional weapons). |
| #39jlaurhughes_dupMay 31, 2009 14:38:44 | Warblade pretty much got absorbed by the Fighter. Swordsage might be a more viable concept depending on how much of it ended up turning into the monk. Fighter and Warlord come off as a warblade class, especially with the right feat and power selection. Swordsage is closer to swordmage with a few choice feats. Or even a multiclass divine class with swordmage think. Monks already exist and have been confirmed as psionic(in case you missed it) and Ki wont exist as the R&D team can't make a viable power source from it. I personally see no need for additional martial classes myself, the four we have available have enough options to make a wide array of character concepts, including the Swordsage/Warblade types. Who knows though, R&D might come up with something for another martial class, however I think there are enough as is with all the options that there are to make different martial characters. |
| #40BelorinMay 31, 2009 14:55:11 | What about a Marksman class as a striker, specializing in simple/military melee (thrown) and simple/military ranged. Yeah, I know another striker? But I just can't seem to come up with a believable controller, and I already had an idea for another defender, the Knight. The knight is heavily armored (up to plate) and uses polearms or double weapons. Bel |
| #41evilveganMay 31, 2009 15:05:11 | Knight - Defender/Striker - Mount or challenge-based options Gladiator - Controller/Striker - Improvised Weapons or "Showman" options Brawler - Striker/Controller - Grab and Bullrush options |
| #42wizardmonMay 31, 2009 15:41:47 | I think that we are most likely to see more support for Martial Classes in Martial Power books. I think that the "leftover ki" material will simply be eaten by the existing Martial classes (as I feel it should have been in the first place.) SO, yes, I do believe that "ki" powers, in the future, will be available options to Martial characters in Martial power. So, we may see a ton of "anime"-esque things for rogue, ranger, warlord and fighter in the future... or, at least, I hope so. However, I feel that Samurai and Ninja will see pseudo-class entries in Dragon, much like Assassins and Gladiators did. My rationale for this is because 1) it was mentioned in a Design and Development article that this might happen and 2) just like assassins and gladiators, there are like a bazzilion ways to create ninjas and samurai (especially depending on your interpretation of them.) As for future Martial classes themselves... I think that if I am correct in my theory that "ki" will be rolled into all powersources, including martial, that we may just see a Martial Controller that relies on Ki... eventually. Of course, I would also be well pleased to see that class introduced in a campaign setting where it would be appropriate (like Oriental Adventures, if that is still in the cards.) |
| #43wizardmonMay 31, 2009 15:52:52 | I also think that a lot of class archtypes can be handled with Multiclassing or Hybrid Classing, or using other already or soon to be available options.. For example:
|
| #44sigil_beguilerMay 31, 2009 16:01:52 | Yeah I suspect most variants on Martial ideas will take the form of additions onto the ones we have. There is a wide swath of material one can use:
I am probably forgetting stuff but that is a fair list. |
| #45LFKMay 31, 2009 19:53:55 | I don't think we're really going to see another whole-cloth Martial class simply because of the general design tenants surrounding the martial source. The overarching rules of the martial source make it extremely narrow in terms of what defines the classes: weapon use. At the same time this defining aspect makes each class within the source incredibly broad: brute, sneaky, ranged, and warlord weapon users; a definition of general approaches to weapon use and weapon groups. The Warlord is already pushing the borders of what many consider to be properly Martial, and any other wiggle room is being quickly munched up by classes, like Barbarian and Monk, that have more leeway in other directions for the fantastical. Essentially what's left aren't classes but class stubs: taking specific weapons and weapon groups or fighting styles and enhancing them. It's no wonder, as a result, that Martial has seen the most support in Dragon as a result. In the 3e days you'd have a whole new base class who's "thing" was that they were little gods so long as they had XYZ obscure weapon in their hands, but that just doesn't fly these days, it's just not enough material. Unless you're talking about a core mechanical change to the behavior of the class you're probably looking at either a Fighting Style feat chain or a Build Option/alternate class feature. |
| #46e105zetaJun 01, 2009 1:01:06 | Unless you're talking about a core mechanical change to the behavior of the class you're probably looking at either a Fighting Style feat chain or a Build Option/alternate class feature. As others have said, I think that there's room for a barehanded/grappler class since the idea of a trained bare-fisted fighter of the Monk has been swallowed up by Psychic powers. A class whose features revolve around grappling, throws, and pinning down enemies would certainly warrant a new Martial Class, I think. |
| #47LFKJun 01, 2009 2:17:27 | As others have said, I think that there's room for a barehanded/grappler class since the idea of a trained bare-fisted fighter of the Monk has been swallowed up by Psychic powers. Yes, but you need to take that and express it as a mechanical idea. As is it's just a fighting style. What does this grappler do and to what end? Do they just have either immobilize, prone, or push in 99% of their powers? How do their class features behave? What do their at-wills look like? What build options are possible? How does the class fit into the bigger game, i.e. "the average campaign"? At this point I'm convinced that people want to see another martial class not because they honestly feel there's unexplored design space (though there is) but because they're looking at the numbers other Sources have and saying "I want that too!" |
| #48mkillJun 01, 2009 3:34:48 | I also think that a lot of class archtypes can be handled with Multiclassing or Hybrid Classing, or using other already or soon to be available options.. "Please multiclass to make this character concept work" is something that I'd like to see exorcised, dead and buried with 3rd edition, thank you. I'd rather keep the character single-classed and rewrite all the fluff. Fighter / Rogue doesn't really work as a Swashbuckler. Rogue has too much stuff that a Swashbuckler doesn't need (Sneak attack, thievery) and fighter has too much stuff that a Swashbuckler doesn't need (heavy armor, tons of weapon proficiencies, reliance on Str and Wis). What makes a swashbucker, which is fancy fencing, a high AC even in cloth armor, taunting mark and using Intelligence and Charisma in combat, is only half-way supported by the rogue and not at all by the fighter. |

Well, I would think they would get a large bonus for using barehanded weaponry, and most of their abilities would revolve around close-range combat. They'd do damage close range and focus on immobilizing, prone, and pushing, yes. They would be Strikers with Defender or Controller as a secondary role depending on build. They'd fit into the average campaign by charging ahead and locking down the most powerful foes with grapple attacks and throws, allowing their party to charge in after their wake. Their class features would probably be things like being able to easily grab and finish off bloodied enemies, as well as being able to disarm some enemies. Most of their At-Wills would be straight up melee or grapple attacks that would disable, shift, or otherwise incapacitate enemies. Their builds would probably be straight up damage, done by chokeholds, slams, or the like - a disabling build, based on crippling, holding, throwing, and shifting enemies - or a defensive build, based around soaking up damage by taunting the most powerful enemies and then grappling them to disable them so their friends can attack them. |
| #50ax_kidsonJun 01, 2009 7:38:02 | I would like to see a more ranged focused class i would like that is would work best as a controller currently making one in fact |
| #51MarandahirJun 01, 2009 8:12:40 | The problem is that ranged controllers dealing weapon damage are really just strikers that can attack more than 2 enemies in a single attack from range. I seriously don't see any more Martial Classes coming; it's too limited in class types, and yet too broad within each class. The fact that they're releasing Martial Power 2 before any more Martial Classes come out seems evidence of this. Arcane Power 2 could come out anytime after MP2, because once EPG comes out, Arcane is finished with 6 classes. Divine Power 2 and Primal Power 2 will wait for PH3, when Divine and Primal get the last of their 6 classes. Psionic Power will come out sometime during this, and PsP2 will come after the last two Psionic classes are released. Yet Martial alone are getting their Power2 book after only 4 classes, and no releases since the previous Power book. This seems very much evidence that they're not going to release another Martial class. Remember, there's no grid to fill - Martial Controller is NOT necessary. |
| #52ignizJun 01, 2009 9:01:39 | That looks like some sort of hybrid class multiclassed into something else. Trust me, I've tried and you just can't do it with the current classes. |
| #53evilveganJun 01, 2009 9:21:19 | Remember, there's no grid to fill - Martial Controller is NOT necessary. Don't be absurd. There's no reason to not fill a made up grid in a made up fantasy game. No class is necessary. If a portion of the customer base would like a Martial Controller, the supplier should supply one. Its simple marketting. Bringing up grids and necessity is complete absurdity. Get over yourself. |
| #54brotherjgizmoJun 01, 2009 17:27:10 | Don't be absurd. There's no reason to not fill a made up grid in a made up fantasy game. No class is necessary. If a portion of the customer base would like a Martial Controller, the supplier should supply one. Except that if they make a martial controller that is clunky in it's explanation people will complain the WoTC is going the way of 3e or other companies that are releasing ****** options just for the sake of making money. |
| #55MarandahirJun 02, 2009 22:43:05 | WotC themselves stated that there's no grid to fill, and that they'll make a martial controller if they could figure out a good idea for it, but since they don't have one, there isn't one. And it's likely that's how it'll stay. Martial itself just is both too broad and two restrictive to allow more classes that aren't really just builds of a previously released class, or else aren't really martial or else are completely imbalanced. But I'm sure you, being the wise and nuanced expert on this subject that you are, already have heard all these arguments so I'll say no more on the subject. I'd wish people would deal with my more noteworthy comment of MP2 coming out before anymore Martial classes while the other P2 books coming out after the release of 6 classes as being possible evidence for no more martial classes, rather than having to dive into the same topics that have been argued to death already. |
| #56Omni-WyvernilJun 03, 2009 15:33:50 | As an alternative option, technological classes might get rolled up into the Martial source, representing mental ingenuity rather than physical prowess. These might also be moved to their own source, however, should they decide to include technology as a power source. This might add a couple a new classes. Tinker: Martial Controller. Builds devices and contraptions that only he can comprehend. Daily powers will allow him to construct Devices, which are stationary machines that allow a variety of controlling effects, but which can only be accessed from that position. Gunslinger: Martial Defender. A ranged defender focused on the use of firearms. His powers will focus on keeping enemies locked in place through the use of fast-draw techniques rather than the pure damage of an archer Ranger. |

Yeah, I hardly read many of the threads because there's always 10 on each topic. 1 thread on a topic is enough. Then again, I am amused by your statement that your comment is more noteworthy than anyone else's. ![]() |
| #58Sailing_Pirate_RyanJun 04, 2009 17:37:01 | I'd wish people would deal with my more noteworthy comment of MP2 coming out before anymore Martial classes while the other P2 books coming out after the release of 6 classes as being possible evidence for no more martial classes, rather than having to dive into the same topics that have been argued to death already. There's still the chance that the class (or one of the classes) in the 2010 setting will be Martial, and a slimmer chance that it could be a Martial Controller, but "no new Martial classes" is the way to bet... |
| #59MarandahirJun 04, 2009 18:32:45 | Yeah, I hardly read many of the threads because there's always 10 on each topic. 1 thread on a topic is enough. All I meant is as far as I know, that comment hadn't been brought up as of yet, while everything else has been commented to death. I didn't mean to sound high and mighty, like my position was more notable than anyone elses. |
| #60evilveganJun 06, 2009 11:16:53 | I think Chef should be a new martial class. Wonder Chef would be a paragon class. Delicious! |
| #61mercaiusJun 06, 2009 12:44:19 | I can actually well-imagine a "brawler" class as a controller. Grappling in and of itself is a kind of control, after all. This is the behemoth of a man who will bowl his enemies into each other. The one brute who actually IS proficient in "Halfling." He could have powers that improve his ability to grapple opponents, and powers that let him use these foes like fleshy little projectiles. His brawlhouse style could keep multiple enemies pinned to his location in almost comedic fashion. His warcry stings the ears, and his punches are solid enough to leave foes staggering, stunned, or with a serious concussion. Possibly with striker or defender as secondary roles. I could also imagine a sort of "guerilla"-type class - similar to a ranger in concept. Mechanically, however, this is a warrior designed to take advantage of the attacks and effects of other party members. His standard-action attacks are not useless, but his best damage tends to come from triggers: If an enemy is knocked prone, he's there to jam a handaxe in its neck. If an ally is bloodied, he's already behind the offending creature, taking advantage of the distraction. His standard action powers become immediate reactions under the right conditions, and their potential for pain is sharply amplified. A striker, with elements of leader or defender depending on how he chooses his exploits. |
| #62alitainJun 07, 2009 2:27:47 | I notice that no one remembered to read the R&D article (Design&Development) that stated as much for the Samurai being similar to the Feat groups of the Gladiator & Assassin. Except that now, we know the DDinsider will get a class write up for Assassin, so that does kinda put that statement on it's head. |
| #63evilveganJun 07, 2009 9:01:16 | Fighter: "COME AND GET IT!" Gelatinous Cube 1: "...." (moves to fighter) Cthulu 1: "Mftharltia jatislalchahhhhhhhhaejatia" (moves to fighter) Terrified 8-year-old, blind, deaf, partially-retarded child 1: "AHHHH!" (moves to fighter) Random Dog 1: "Arf?" (moves to fighter) Non-Melee Wizard (with 18 int/wis who in no way wants to move closer to the fighter): "What the?" (moves to fighter) Etc. |
| #64ignizJun 07, 2009 15:40:12 | So basically it could work but it'd be weird? |
| #65Johnathan_VagabondJun 08, 2009 13:38:56 | WotC themselves stated that there's no grid to fill, and that they'll make a martial controller if they could figure out a good idea for it, but since they don't have one, there isn't one. And it's likely that's how it'll stay. Martial itself just is both too broad and two restrictive to allow more classes that aren't really just builds of a previously released class, or else aren't really martial or else are completely imbalanced. I would say it's no more or less valid than any other theory, but it does have a standing logic that survives rigorous examination. My only real response is that WotC hasn't said that's how there doing things, so it's not hard and fast. Also, if 4e makes the 7 year run that 3e/3.5e made, then the possibility that they may at some time want to create a new Arcane/Martial class, grows as more time passes. I doubt the company will refrain from releasing a new class just because it wasn't ready in time for Martial Power 1. |
| #66Johnathan_VagabondJun 08, 2009 13:46:28 | Also Martial Controller |
| #67faustus2Jun 09, 2009 18:25:32 | A Samurai class is definately coming. Defender with Finishing moves. :fight!: |
| #68ranadielJun 09, 2009 20:07:15 | A Samurai class is definately coming. Defender with Finishing moves. Except they just said less than a month ago that there are no plans for a distinct Samurai class, instead going for the Gladiator-type route for the Samurai.:P |
| #69Dragon9Jun 09, 2009 20:16:26 | Except they just said less than a month ago that there are no plans for a distinct Samurai class, instead going for the Gladiator-type route for the Samurai.:P That's not entirely correct. They said the current thinking was a feat tree. That doesn't mean they won't change their mind. ;) |
| #70fenrir7139Jun 09, 2009 21:45:07 | I could see a samurai class focusing more on the anime-esque, cloth-wearing lone swordsman, with lots of close-burst powers, like: |
| #71mercaiusJun 09, 2009 23:32:28 | That's not entirely correct. They said the current thinking was a feat tree. That doesn't mean they won't change their mind. ;) But even still, he is correct to say that the samurai is not "definitely coming" as of the moment, given what we know the devs were thinking last month. It's a possible eventuality, but not definite yet. |
| #72ranadielJun 10, 2009 6:13:47 | That's not entirely correct. They said the current thinking was a feat tree. That doesn't mean they won't change their mind. ;) ....But I said that they have no plans for a distinct class. If the current thinking is that they aren't going to make a distinct class, then it would kind of silly to have plans to make one.:P |
| #73TheLoneClericJun 10, 2009 7:48:29 | Can anyone honestly tell me why some of these options couldn't be varients of the existing 4 classes? |
| #74mercaiusJun 10, 2009 12:38:52 | Because the real underlying idea is a class that is mechanically different from the current martial classes. If you try and tackle the problem from a fluff-wise standpoint, then it's only natural that every class idea is going to sound like a variation on another class. New classes create new methods of gameplay for players, moreso than new builds. |
| #75MaoiNekoJun 10, 2009 14:22:16 | For a new Martial Class, I think they really need a controller. My idea was a Trap Master. One who uses a variety of devices to change the terrain (caltrops, glue bombs, etc) or create area of effects (smoke bombs, poison gas, etc). |
