| #1dabutcherFeb 15, 2009 14:15:27 | What do you think the new power sources powers will be called? We have prayers for divine, exploits for martial, evocations for primal, and spells for arcane, but what's next? I've been calling shadow powers fates but I haven't given thought to ki, psionic, or elemental. |
| #2alisair_longreachFeb 15, 2009 14:31:35 | Psionic Powers will probably be called manifestations. |
| #3Omni-WyvernilFeb 15, 2009 14:38:35 | Some ideas for power names: Ki: Techniques, Jutsus, Katas Psionic: Talents, Manifestations Shadow: Hexes, Mysteries, Charms Elemental: Callings?, Infusions? (not quite as sure on this one) |
| #4dabutcherFeb 15, 2009 14:42:02 | Some ideas for power names: My favorites out of yours are Techniques, Manifestations, and Hexes. I just randomly came up with torrents for elemental. |
| #5MechaliburFeb 15, 2009 17:15:53 | I don't think there will be an elemental powersource. Sorcerers are arcane and can draw power from the elemental chaos. So I don't really see how the elemental power source will be any different... |
| #6rqshadesFeb 15, 2009 17:57:01 | Some ideas for power names: It's important to remember that there are going to be numerous classes for each power source. If the Shadow power source includes classes like Hexblade and Necromancer, then I could see Hexes working as a name for those powers. However, if Ninja ends up in the Shadow source, I'll have as tough a time swallowing that as I did with Barbarians using "Evocations." ![]() I was soooo hoping that Primal powers would be called Surges. Seemed like it would have fit much better when you take all the Primal classes into consideration. Techniques seems like a decent fit for Ki. Or heck, maybe Surges could work for it too. We'll have to wait and see what classes that power source will include aside from the Monk, but I get the feeling that "Justus" or "Katas" would be too Monk-specific to apply to the entire power source. Manifestations does seem the most likely for Psi. And Torrents sounds like a pretty flavorful description for the Elemental source. Though, they're going to have to work their creative butts off to truly differentiate the Elemental classes from all the other classes that are already flinging elemental energy about using other power sources. It should be interesting (hopefully) to see what they come up with. ![]() |

| #8ranadielFeb 15, 2009 19:15:35 | "Torrents" is clearly the term for abilities from the Pirate power source. :P I disagree. Torrents fall under "anti-pirate technology". Therefore they must fall under the kraken power source as the kraken is the natural predator of the pirate.:P |
| #9vebrandssonFeb 15, 2009 19:17:05 | I don't think there will be an elemental powersource. WotC has already confirmed an elemental power source, there will be one, though like you I don't see how it would be different. |
| #10dabutcherFeb 15, 2009 19:20:26 | "Torrents" is clearly the term for abilities from the Pirate power source. :P And "riffs" is definitely the term for powers in the rock n' roll power source, but we aren't talking about that. I don't think there will be an elemental powersource. It was announced in the Player's Handbook. |
| #11dabutcherFeb 15, 2009 19:21:29 | Aack! Ninja'd by Vebrandson! |
| #12greatfritoFeb 15, 2009 19:34:12 | I personally like "Talents" for psionic powers, but I could easily see "Manifestations" as well. A bit off-topic... The more people discuss future power sources, the more I hope for someone to homebrew some classes using the power of Rock. Multiclass feat? I Wanna Rock! |
| #13NyronusFeb 15, 2009 19:45:01 |

| #14cadfanFeb 15, 2009 20:24:29 | Shadow powers have a high chance of being called Mysteries. |
| #15MechaliburFeb 15, 2009 20:28:39 | It was announced in the Player's Handbook. Which was before the Sorcerer. And if I recall correctly, it said "possible future power sources include" |
| #16doctorhookFeb 15, 2009 20:30:32 | Which was before the Sorcerer. And if I recall correctly, it said "possible future power sources include" It might change, and it might not. They haven't told us that it has, so why assume otherwise? Anyway, just because we have classes that deal elemental damage doesn't necessarily mean that this "elemental" power source won't have a unique shtick. |
| #17dabutcherFeb 15, 2009 20:41:18 | It might change, and it might not. They haven't told us that it has, so why assume otherwise? Anyway, just because we have classes that deal elemental damage doesn't necessarily mean that this "elemental" power source won't have a unique shtick. True dat. |
| #18MechaliburFeb 15, 2009 20:45:20 | I can't honestly think of anything that would make it unique though... It seems pretty clear cut that "elemental" would mean either A: uses the power of the elements (which the wizard can do) or B: uses power from the Elemental Chaos (which the sorcerer can do). If they can come up with an idea that truly makes it unique, I would be very impressed... but, I suppose you're right that I can't rule it out completely. |
| #19dabutcherFeb 15, 2009 21:02:28 | Elemental classes could take on a specific type of element like Electromancer would be a striker that sends shocks to do plenty o' damage, while a Rockshaper would use the rocks to defend himself and allies. |
| #20ranadielFeb 15, 2009 21:29:50 | *sigh* Why do I always respond to these threads that require me to look up a bunch of things as I'm doing my last checks before going to bed?Which was before the Sorcerer. And if I recall correctly, it said "possible future power sources include" However the sorcerer was in development at the time so they were well aware of what it was looking like, especially since wuild magic was part of the design before the PHBI was released. Additionally you recall wrong. Additional power sources and techniques provide characters of different classes with powers and abilities. These will appear in future Player’s Handbook volumes. For example, barbarians and druids draw on the primal forces of nature, monks harness the power of their soul energy (or ki), and psions call upon the mind to generate psionic powers. Future power sources include elemental, ki, primal, psionic, and shadow. No ifs ands or buts about it. That is a definite statement there. I can't honestly think of anything that would make it unique though... It seems pretty clear cut that "elemental" would mean either A: uses the power of the elements (which the wizard can do) or B: uses power from the Elemental Chaos (which the sorcerer can do). Classes that actually controlled the entropic forces as opposed to simply letting them run wild? Elemental classes could take on a specific type of element like Electromancer would be a striker that sends shocks to do plenty o' damage, while a Rockshaper would use the rocks to defend himself and allies. I'm sorry, this discussion has been done before but making the elemental classes segregated by element is one of the absolutely worst ideas that they could do with the elemental power sources imo. For starters it creates characters that are completely nerfed against certain monsters due to damage types. Secondly you can make an argument for almost any of the elements to fit any of the roles, some admitedly stronger than others, there would be no way to truly encompass each element without making them into completely hybrid classes. Thirdly, it goes against the nature of the elemental chaos. That which is one element will eventually give way to another element, even the City of Brass shall someday return once more to the basic elements that created it which will give way to the other elements in time. |
| #21tiwaztyrsfistFeb 15, 2009 22:58:53 | I really see Elemental as ONLY working in one of two ways. Either each class will have a Single element to use; OR elemental powers will be chaotic and have random damage types. Examples: Option one: Defender will use Earth/Force only. Striker will use Fire only. Controller will use Water/Cold only. Leader will use Air/Lightning/Thunder only. Option Two: Your Daily power is Chaos Sphere. It does 3d8 + Stat Mod Damage to a burst 2. Damage type is random. First time you use it, it may do fire damage. Next time you use it, it may do cold. Or lightning. Other topics: Psionic: I think Manifestations is probable. Shadow: I like Mysteries, on the basis that they were called that in the 3.5 Tome of Magic. Ki: I lean towards Techniques, as this word makes sense both for martial style powers like roundhouse kicks, and for flashy things like Hadoken or Hiruyoshotenha. Elemental: Surge works in my mind. An elemental surge. A bit like Torrent, but it flows better. Ki-carnum: :P So, if Incarnum becomes a source on it's own, it's powers will probably be called Melds, but that doesn't work if they merge it with Ki. However, the term Technique works okay for Meld Shaping as well in my opinion. We'll see. |
| #22cadfanFeb 16, 2009 0:26:12 | I'm sorry, this discussion has been done before but making the elemental classes segregated by element is one of the absolutely worst ideas that they could do with the elemental power sources imo. For starters it creates characters that are completely nerfed against certain monsters due to damage types. It would be child's play to write around this. Just grant the ability to pierce a certain amount of damage resistance for your chosen elemental type. The sorcerer already has an ability like this. I don't know what they will or won't do with the Elemental power source, but this is definitely not a problem. |
| #23praionFeb 16, 2009 11:04:11 | Ki : Channelings maybe ? You channel your ki into your actions |
| #24MechaliburFeb 16, 2009 21:28:16 | No ifs ands or buts about it. That is a definite statement there. I interpret that to mean that future editions will have new power sources, not necesarily the ones they mentioned. And I didn't know that the sorcerer was that far in development when they made the PHB. Do you have a link or something I coulde see? |
| #25TiddlywinksFeb 16, 2009 22:04:37 | Ki: I lean towards Techniques, as this word makes sense both for martial style powers like roundhouse kicks, and for flashy things like Hadoken or Hiruyoshotenha. You're lucky I already agree with you on this one, TiwazTyrsfist, because this isn't exactly convincing. I'm a little perplexed as to why you would cite only monk-esque examples to support a proposed name for an entire power source. What about non-monk Ki classes? I fully agree that Techniques seems like a good fit for Ki. However, I think that because the Ki powersource is about focusing your inner strength, or "soul energy" (as Wotc described it) to accomplish amazing feats - and Techniques seems fitting for such abilities. I understand that Monk is the only class that's been specifically named as a Ki class, but I wish more people would start thinking in terms of what Ki might entail rather than what Monk might entail. |
| #26DreamstryderFeb 16, 2009 23:00:53 | Ki- "jutsu" is Japanese for art, means, or technique. "Art" or "Technique" works if you don't want to be Japan-specific; just as "ki" and "tofu" are Japanese words, the concept of ki (chi/qi = Chinese) and bean curd aren't solely Japanese. Shadow - I like mysteries or hexes. Surges already name healing surges, so that's iffy. |
| #27doctorhookFeb 16, 2009 23:58:49 | Ki- "jutsu" is Japanese for art, means, or technique. "Art" or "Technique" works if you don't want to be Japan-specific; just as "ki" and "tofu" are Japanese words, the concept of ki (chi/qi = Chinese) and bean curd aren't solely Japanese. I agree on all counts. Personally, I prefer "mysteries" for Shadow, because it's got some history in D&D in that sense (from 3.5E's Tome of Magic, as Cadfan will -- and did -- happily tell you). Plus, the term is a bit more general than "hexes", which is a word which I more expect to see in the names of specific Shadow powers. "Techniques" is a little bland, but "jutsus" or "katas" are too specific. (In the case of "jutsus", it's not even an especially accurate use of the term, even if all the Ki classes do turn out to be Japanese-based -- which I hope they don't.) I heard someone mention "chakras", which sounds suitable, but I have to admit that its suitability would directly relate to the content of the Ki power source, and also that I don't know the exact context in which the word "chakras" was used in Incarnum. I don't currently have any other suggestions for Ki powers. For Psionics, either "manifestations" or "talents" sound really good to me, especially "talents", which has the advantage of being easier to spell. :P As for Elemental, I think it's anyone's guess. We really don't know a damned thing about the power source at this point, although I like to imagine it including some form of "Geomancer" class, rather than simply a power source defined by its damage types. |
| #28ranadielFeb 17, 2009 6:30:38 | I interpret that to mean that future editions will have new power sources, not necesarily the ones they mentioned. And I didn't know that the sorcerer was that far in development when they made the PHB. Do you have a link or something I coulde see? .....I am not touching that intentionally self misleading interpretation. As for how far the Sorcerer was, in may 2008, a month before the PHBI came out, we have Sorcerers being described as having: some wild magery Source Some stuff from that description of the Sorcerer has changed, but the important part is that it had the wild magic aspect back before the PHBI was released. |
| #29Darkwolf_BloodsbaneFeb 17, 2009 11:34:00 | Some ideas for power names: My favoites of these: Techniques - Nice and Generic. Manifestations - Coinciding with the olden name for Psionic Powers. Mysteries - Gotta Love the Shadow Mage and my guess for elemental: Channeling - you channel the power of the Elemental Chaos. |
| #30glimeral_dupFeb 17, 2009 11:44:52 | Assuming that the Warden didnt kill him and take his stuff, I think that the Greenstar Adept would make a good foundation/starting point for a tough-as-nails Elemental Defender. |
| #31wizardmonFeb 17, 2009 12:29:05 | The thing about Elemental power is that we know nothing about it. It could mean "elemental," as in the four elements, or it could be "elemental" as in pertaining to the Primordials, just as the Divine power source pertains to the gods. Considering that we know nothing about what elemental is, much less what it does, I think that it would be completely pointless to try to guess their power's names. Even more pointless than guessing other power source names (which, admittedly, is quite fun.) |
