What do we think of the new (yet again) convention for titling books?

Player's Option: Heroes of the Feywild
Player's Option: Powers of the Plane Below

Is this the beginings of Mearls' "modularity"?

maybe we will have:

players options I'm only typing players options just one and not again before each one)
Heroes of the forgotten realms
Heroes of Eberron
Heroes of the planes above

Heroes of underdark( or would shadows deal with this)

It's probably another play to nostalgia - there was a "Player's Option" series back in 2E.

Maybe!

I think that Heroes of Shadow is completely different than Heroes of the Underdark, just my opinion.

I remember! -- And, yeah, probably.

I would love all of those suggestions! Heroes of the planes above is all but certain given that every plane except the Astral Sea, far realms and the dream plane have been done. The last two would not precede the Astral Sea.

Heroes of the Far Realms would of course be a re-visit of the Psionic classes.

Heroes of the Plane Above would be Divine favoring.

No idea what Heroes of the Dream Plane would be. -- Is there a dream plane?

I believe it gets mentioned in Psionic Power and maybe Manual of the planes, maybe ebberon too. Both are supposed to be planes of pure thought and concept. Psionic would make sense for both and could be combined in Heroes of the Phrenic Planes.

There's also a 5th in Neverwinter that is mentioned but not found fleshed out in any previous material; "Conquest."

Meh. You guys are making too much of this IMO. It's just a minor change in packaging. "Player's Option" books are just "X Power" books, except based on character concepts or thematic considerations rather than power source. Power source no longer defines a character in the mechanically rigid way it did before Essentials (or before PHB3 gave us hybrids), and is no longer such a useful method of grouping character options. I don't think it has any significance beyond that.

Oh man, if there was a Heroes of Eberron book, or just another Eberron book, I would be a happy camper.

The dev's explicitly stated that there are no plans to visit time periods in the current edition (ie. no steampunk).

Heroes of Savagery, or whathaveyou, for monster PCs would be enjoyed by many.

Welcome to the WotC D&D forums, where we overreact, beat horses and generally mull over things that would be better left un-mulled.

This is where they open up design space to repackage and resell PHB 2 and later 3. Now with zombified sacred cows for everyone.

I'm in!

Mike Mearls stated during a seminar that he intends to "get Baker on the phone."

You shouldn´t rule out a "Heroes of steele" about "steampunk" PCs (gunpowder, alchemy, mech-armours, golem mounts, crazy scientists, magic cycles, magic locomotives, flying ironclads..)

The designers pointedly stated that other eras are not going to be covered or addressed in favor of focusing on "D&D".

Also, much of that flavor can be found in Eberron already. -- Not all, but much.

Other eras? Gnomes from Krynn (Dragonlance) use steampunk technology and it´s canon. Fraal, the little grey man from Alternity rpg was a canon AD&D creature, and don´t forget the module "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks" about a crashed spaceship.

Charactes from Fogorten Realmas could use firearms. Can´t alchemy be a new power source?

Gnomes are inventors of contraptions and explorers of machination in most all settings.

Canon isn't canon until it's revisited in the current setting; if that makes any sense?

Alchemy already exists in the current game (not as a power source).

I like the organization of the Neverwinter Campaign Setting, so, if that's what we can expect moving forward, I'm happy.

Also, the all-crunch book values (ie. sales) were largely invalidated by DDI accounts considering the oft shared wisdom that the book purchase was not-needed come Compendium/Character Builder update. Doing a 50-50 split in crunch and fluff (fluff we actually want) insures book sales, paid developers and open FLGSs. -- It makes sense.

I think it will likely be a bit more significant than that, perhaps allowing a greater merge of theme and class, but I agree with most of your sentiment.

On the more humorous side, they could always reinvent the BoEF as Heroes of Eros.  They might as well.  In addition to killing things and taking their stuff, adventurers also have a tendency to hump NPCs (and, sometimes, try to take their stuff).

I'm guessing you really just miss WotC pumping out superfluous classes. No judgement intended, however they could have called Heroes of Shadow PHB4 and a lot of people would have hated it just because it broke the pattern. The opposite is true as well, if they had only renamed the PHB series to Player Options, people would hate that they changed the name.

On a more productive note, Heroes of Questionable Morality is an idea.

Hatta, whether you intended to or no, you just made what is most easily taken a personal attack, so please don't.

Whether any class is superfluous is subjective. I would personally be happier with a larger roster of class choices out there, as I am not wholly satisfied with the current available variety. More new ideas, rather than altered old ideas, would suit me better, specifically because there are specific ideas I would like to explore which cannot be done without going to lengths I do not feel should be neccessary. It is quite likely that hunterian shares my sentiment, though if he simply enjoys a constant stream of new ideas for their own sake, there is no fault in that.

I miss having a shadow controller, shadow defender, shadow leader and a shadow striker in the AEDU mold in a PHB. Now, thanks to the Player's Option books, we get a mess of options/powers and classes with little power selection. The feats in HoS were pretty watered down. While for some, it's not for me.

Basically, Essentials highjacked the Shadow power source and released HoS- the worst Player's Book in 4th.

A lot of us wouldn't have had an issue with Essentials/Heroes Option if WotC gave us a core shadow AEDU book, even if there was a repeat of powers. Wizards created this divide in design philosophy, now it's their bed to lie in.

All of these ideas sound great and could make a good product. It all depends on how it's interpreted I think. I hope WotC listen to feedback they've had from the Player's Heroes of Shadow book.

Anybody think that "Heroes Of The Far Realm" would be a good idea, if only to play as a David Cronenberg-ian mutant who's motto is "LONG LIVE THE NEW FLESH!"? And to have Grell PCs who's motivation for adventuring is "Monsters are tasty!"?

And its' funny one mentioned Monster heroes, Because I have plans to pitch an article to Dragon in october fleshing out Kobolds with essentials-style stats, feats, weapons (Like one that's basically a bear-trap on a chain), and a paragon path based on Tucker's Kobolds.

A book about the Far Realm and cosmic horror would be a good idea but I imagine the player´s handobook would be with elements of gothic terror (dark powers..). I meant it would be included in a new edition of "heroes of horror".

What do you know about splatterpunk? Cyborgs like from movie "Virus" and borgs from Star Treck could be very horrofic enemies. What about a steampunks heroes like inquisitor/witch hunter?

I remember something coming out of wizards saying they might cover some steampunk stuff in the Unearthed Arcana articles... I think it would be a mistake for them to ignore steampunk stuff because there is a demand for it... Despite the fact that Eberron does cover a lot of the steampunk terrain I would love a book that addressed the genre... I'd also be psyched for some articles...

Heroes of the Far Realm? Hell yeah! "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn."

Also the idea above about Heroes of the Sea? Absolutely... A few aquatic races... (no sea elves please) A couple of martial builds for Rouges and Fighters...

Hang on, let me get my checklist...

Heroes of Shadow - done
Heroes of the Feywild - Soon
Heroes of the Elemental Chaos - In the works
Heroes of the Astral Sea - will piss many off if it ISN'T made

I think "Heroes of the Wilds" would be a decent enough title to cover sea, desert, tundra, etc. in the natural world. (Monstrous PCs could get their due in such as book as well.)

Heroes of the Far Realm... maybe. I think a lot of people would expect new psionic builds in a book like that. New builds would most likely be E-style, and D&D has already stated they're pretty happy with psionics as-is. This may not be the case, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think we may have already gotten a "Heroes of Eberron" book, only they called it the "Eberron Player's Guide." ;)

And I also think that Underdark is pretty well served with available content, between the Underdark book and miscellaneous other material.
