November Debut Content?

Maybe I missed it, but the November Content Calendar doesn't seem to have a PH3 debut article. What do you think, because I see a number of ways to go with this.

Are they just holding off on revealing it?
Was the debut content a ruse to get subscribers?
Are they taking a break for Thanksgiving?
Is there not enough in the PH3 to keep the debuts happening every month?
Do they simply believe that the rest of this months content makes up for it?
Did debut content turn out to be unpopular?

I'm not really on board with any of those ideas, but I wanted to see what you thought. Discuss it here, or send me your thoughts at powersourcepodcast@gmail.com and we'll discuss it on The Power Source! Thanks!

Haven't they done this twice with the Warlord, though?  Seriously, with how much WotC has Warlord on the brain, they should go ahead and, you know, MAKE STUFF FOR IT!

Yeah, but they need to make more.  Besides, given their past history, the Warlord Essentials will probably end up being Warlock Essentials or something :P

They generally release it on the same day as the CB update, and if you look at it that day's pretty much full. I just don't think they had enough room. Plus, because the update's later in the month, they don't want to give up the content too soon. I'm hoping for Psionic Defender or the 4 race as content.

According to my Witches and Witchcraft class teacher, people accidently mix up the terms Warlock and Warlord quite often.  Despite having nothing to do with each other, and despite Warlock not originally having anything to do with witches (the association is a neologism).

LordDreadman

I'm gonna throw out a small suspician here:

I'm beginning to think that the lack of debut content is not an accident. Whether or not they plan on adding it to the calandar later, I have no idea, but it not being on the calandar isn't an accident, I think.

Here's why:

Last time there was a mixup with writing Warlord instead of Warden, I wrote it on the forums and, within hours, it was changed. Could it be that WotC hasn't read this thread because they think they know what we're saying and they were prepared for it?

Just a thought. It seems suspicious to me.

As a test, I will now start another thread entitled "Warlord Pacts?" and we can see if they're ignoring this thread. We'll just watch to see if they change it.

Yes, I know I sound like a conspiricy theorist. Believe me, this is more the scientist in me than anything else. Let the experiment begin!

That could explain the typo. The editors had 'Warlord' on their minds.

Sorta like the memory trick ...

Say, the word 'top', quickly, ten times.

Top, top, top, top, top, top, top, top, top, top.

It almost certainly won't be the other build.  The last Monk article was a Playtest.  This preview will most likely be the exact same thing, except now it will be how the final class will look, instead of the Playtest.  IE fixes to systems, the missing level of powers will be put in, etc.

I wouldn't count on that. It would make the Assassin a little less unique. Plus, Monks are really more of "I kick you in the face" rather than "I can kill you with a carrot."

Hooray for paying for the same content, three times!

Yes, I know its a preview. But it doesn't smell right that we get a playtest, then a few months later get a preview of the exact same thing (assuming CelticMutt is correct, certainly sounds typical of WotC's behaviour to me).

Actually it more like paying for three seperate things that all contain it, each issue of dragon and PHB3 all have more content than just the monk. And even if it is the other build you'll still be paying for some things twice and other 3 times anyways.

That said I would much prefer the other build, mostly cause I want diversity and the playtest will cover me for the other build for now. I'd actually prefer the Psionic defender, or divine class more than the monk again. But I'll take whatever I can  get.

Also I hope they keep enchantable unarmedstrike, one of my favorite monk things it the "whole body is a weapon" thing.

WotC produces a certain amount of content each month. We're already paying for playtests. We're already paying for previews. We'll end up paying for it once again when the book is released. Is it too much to ask WotC to not make us pay for the same content three times?

Look at the Minotaur. We pay for the version in MM1. They then release a new version in Dragon. I was fine with that. The MM1 version wasn't balanced for players. It was there primarily for NPCs with the option to use it for PCs if you so desire. That's alright.

However instead of producing errata for the Dragon version, we will now have to pay for it a third time, or else not buy the PHB3 at all.

Making us pay for the Monk three times as well is just. Well. Its typical WotC is what it is. Its simply frustrating to see them continue down this road.

But hey, there's always the remote possibility we'll get the other Monk build. I find that scenario very unlikely, but theoretically its possible.

I must say I'm pretty disappointed to hear that it's the monk again. I was really excited about what new content we would see...if it does turn out to be the other build, I guess that's alright, but I'd still rather see a glimpse of another new class or race, dang it.

Yes, not paying for it is an option. Another option is for WotC to preview something else of the PHB3.

Whether you mean to or not, you're post is sending the message "shut up or don't buy it." You produced this response after only two posts of me expressing my opinion. This is the first thread I've siad a negative thing about WotC forcing us to do without Insider or to pay for previews. If two posts is the threshold that triggers "shut up or don't buy it" then these forums have long sinced stopped being a joke, and have in fact become a parody of itself.

Really, 2 posts isn't allowed in these parts? 2?

Phb3 will also have at least 3 classes we haven't seen, a race we haven't seen. A build of Seeker, and one for psion. More skill powers. And the issue of dragon with Minotaurs had other material or was it a one article issue?

And I find it amusing that your complaining about buying preview material, pre view means you will be seeing it again. So does playtest, only that gives us a chance to respond. The nature of this material means we see it again.

They give us other material, and thats what I pay for, the previews and playtests and other material that I know will come up again is gracy.

If you don't mind paying for errata, that's fine. There's no issue for you. I dislike paying for Errata. I have mentioned briefly once or twice in the past my displeasure on the limited pages of the PHB2 being taken up by errata. I've said I hope they don't do this for PHB3 (more than they already are with the minotaur).

And I find it amusing that your complaining about buying preview material, pre view means you will be seeing it again. So does playtest, only that gives us a chance to respond. The nature of this material means we see it again.

1) It is not customary to pay for preview material. I'll point at Wizards own website for one example. I'll also point to comics for a second example. I'll also point to Microsoft's own Windows 7 as yet another example.

2) If it was limited to the content being previewed once and then released, I wouldn't have complained. If it was limited to being playtested, and then released I wouldn't have complained. Its when its playtested, then previewed and THEN released, with us having to pay for it (or do without a product) every step of the way. THAT'S when I complain.

They give us other material, and thats what I pay for

That's incorrect. You pay WotC for:
  • Dragon

  • Dungeon

  • The Compendium

  • The Character Builder

  • Adventure Tools

  • Bonus Tools

  • Previews

  • Playtests

The fact you're willing to pay the same amount of money for a subset of these is irrelevant. When you bought the PHB1, you didn't pay for 1 race and 1 class, and nothing else. You paid for the entire book.

I don't think its out of line for me to express my feelings on what I'm paying for. I haven't flooded the forums with my feelings on the issue. I've posted a total of 2 posts expressing my opinion in a thread, dedicated to the subject at hand.

I have in fact spent as many posts defending myself for expressing myself, as I have actually expressing myself.

Is this the response you people give when someone makes a total of 2 posts on an issue? Does this seem balanced to you? It doesn't, perhaps, seem over the top?

The next time someone makes a similar post on how I should be happy with paying for the same Monk content 3 times, I will be forced to either ignore the person, or make a 3rd post defending myself. At which point, I will have produced 50% more posts defending my ability to post my feelings on these forums, then I have actually posting those feelings.

Seriously guys, its getting ridiculous.

So the if you want to save money and not pay for everything multiple times don't buy PHB3, it will be in the compedium and the character builder. So adding those two by your logic your paying for the matrerial 5 times now. or you can go the othe rway and unsubscribe to the insider options.

I can't speak for everyone who has commented to you, but for me my interest is in pointing out that a) there is additional content outside of the monk in each issue and will be more tran just the monk inPHB3. b)You are complaining about "having" to pay for optional things. No one makes you play D&D, and no one makes you buy the new books, or the subscription to the insider. And while you may have only expressed it a couple of tiems this is a very common comment, or mind set. Listening to some on these boards you'd think wizards has a gun to our heads making us shill out money, It is a for fun product, buy as much or as little as you want.

And as to you defending yourself: We expressed dessenting oppinons, witch you felt needed to be responded to. And we in turn felt we should respond to your responses. If it's getting ridiculous it's because you felt you needed to defend your self from our descenting oppinion. But if you can rebuttle, it's only fair we have the same option. And stop saying how much you have actually said, no one has said anything about how much you have to say on the subject besides you, the rest of us are talking about what you have to say.

I fixed this.  You don't pay for playtests.  They are part of Dragon, which you pay for.  Listign playtests seperately is like listing all the different articles separately.  Yes, you're paying for them, but not on an individual basis.  You're payign for Dragon.

You don't pay for previews (neither the old ones or debut content).  They are an extra thrown in for subscribers.  It's not part of the cost.  As an "Insider" you're getting a sneak peek at what's coming down the pike.  The debut content is fuller than the old previews we got of the PHB2 material (if yuo remember the previews of the Invoker, Bard, etc.).

I don't think its out of line for me to express my feelings on what I'm paying for. I haven't flooded the forums with my feelings on the issue. I've posted a total of 2 posts expressing my opinion in a thread, dedicated to the subject at hand.

It's not out of line for you to express your feelings, although at the same time everyoen else has a right to express their feelings on your feelings.    It's the consequence of being in a public forum.

If it seems people are jumping on you, don't feel that way.  It's not you.    I believe it's a reaction to the oft repeated fallacy of paying for debut content.  Ever since they announced they were doing this for subscribers a vocal group of people have harped that they're "paying for previews" and it seemed to spread.  It has been correctly pointed out on more than one occasion that the debut content is not part of the DDI pricing but an extra given out to subscibers.  The price would be the same with or without it.  Some see it as paid for since it's available only to subscribers and not as free web material.  Really it's more like the free football you get with your paid subscription to Sports Illustrated.

on topic: i'm excited to see how the monk has changed, both as a player of monks, and from a game desing perspective. As someone with an interest in game design, this is one of the fringe benefits of an insider subscription.

off topic: there seems to be three camps of thought when it comes to WOTC, or at least percieved camps. Pollyanas who think everything wizard does is awesome, bitter naysayers who complain about everything, and then everyone else. My observation has been that appearing to fall into either of the extreme catagories, emphasis on the word appearing, tends to evoke strong reactions from people. typically, the loudest reactions are from those on the other end of the spectrum, but not always.

with specific regard to this thread, i think you got caught up in this sort of cultural war by accident. the unfortunate fact is that, regardless of truth or the majority, there is a lamentably vocal minority who seem to be professional whiners. your issues regarding the monk playtest/debut, regardless of its soundness as a complaint, got you lumped in with these sour grape folks, and as a consequence you got the above mentioned volitile reaction.
