I've been mulling over how there's lots of folks who seem to be talking about how the core books are too combat focused, too tactically focused, or whatever. There's different tastes out there and the books have to appeal to everyone. So I got thinking and like a bolt I figured: A series set up by Player Motivation! Like on pg. 8 of the DMG. There's the Actor, Storyteller, Thinker, Slayer and a scad of others. So what if there was a book that provided powers, feats, and equipment that would appeal to the different kinds of player to help them make their character have a bit of the stuff they love but which doesn't quite fit into mainstream of the game. So if you're bothered by the fact the number of feats and powers are so disproportionately combat-focused? Wait for Actor to come out. Want more dramatic rules and abilities to affect the story in ways the rules gloss over? Storyteller is the book for you. Deeper tactics? Thinker. Stuff to help you more hardcore? Slayer. So everyone gets to play the kind of game they want, with DMs allowing or disallowing different of these books, which gives them another tool in their toolbelt to zero in on the flavor of game they want to run and players rules that help them make their characters more exactly what they're looking for. Just had the idea and thought "Man! I gotta' share that with the guys!" So let me know what you think! |

All it takes is a DM who throws nothing but encounters at you and players to sit and play at his table. If that bothers you, it isn't the edition's fault, it's the DM's fault for running it like that and your fault for still playing contently. |

I think if there were more feats and powers dedicated to things outside of combat, related to the world and life beyond the dungeon, I think folks interested in a more Storytelling or Actor centered campaign would be ecstatic! But then I don't think every game needs to be that--and I totally see that that kind of gaming is well outside of the 4e mainstream. In fact, most folks could totally ignore it. But yeah, I mean you can have all the books and gaming aids in the world and a lame game is probably still going to be lame. On the other hand with an expert enough DM you can take only the Warhammer wargame rules and come up with a rich storytelling and roleplaying epic. But just because a lone scientist crashed on a desert island is able to make all of society's modern conveniences out of bamboo and coconuts doesn't mean tools and technology aren't helpful to regular folks who want to live comfortable, satisfied lives! |
