| #1fenruswolfSep 29, 2010 12:34:31 | Are there plans to release an Oriental Adventures Guide? That would be awesome, and please not one based on any particular world. |
| #2sallaSep 29, 2010 13:06:56 | None have been leaked so far. |
| #3mboss77Sep 29, 2010 18:39:12 | I would probably buy it sight unseen. I'm a sucker for Samurai! Maybe I'll just create my own now that I'm thinking about it... |
| #4inaraiSep 29, 2010 21:53:01 | I would probably buy it sight unseen. I'm a sucker for Samurai! Maybe I'll just create my own now that I'm thinking about it... Works best as a theme, really. Otherwise, you get "Why can't my fighter/ranger/rogue/warlord/swordmage/(refluffed?) barbarian/etc. be a samurai?". |
| #5NyarlathotepSep 29, 2010 22:03:57 | I would probably buy it sight unseen. I'm a sucker for Samurai! Maybe I'll just create my own now that I'm thinking about it... Most of the "Oriental Adventures" classes would work best as themes, really. |
| #6mboss77Sep 29, 2010 22:05:45 | Good call with the theme |
| #7sallaSep 29, 2010 23:22:12 | They don't even need themes, just have your character introduce himself as a samurai/wu jen/shugenja/ninja/whatever. |
| #8NyarlathotepSep 30, 2010 0:30:34 | They don't even need themes, just have your character introduce himself as a samurai/wu jen/shugenja/ninja/whatever. For that matter, you don't really need them in Dark Sun either, but they're nice to have. Just a little something to make the Samurai fighter a little different than the Bushi fighter. |
| #9Cyber-DaveSep 30, 2010 0:36:26 | Speaking of Oriental Adventures, anyone have any comments on L5R 4th edition? Is the system any good? |
| #10Chiba_MonkeySep 30, 2010 1:19:19 | I would probably buy it sight unseen. I'm a sucker for Samurai! Maybe I'll just create my own now that I'm thinking about it... I also second this. I've been one of the people who does not believe Samurai warrants its own class. After all, in 3.5 L5R, any warrior-type was a "samurai" in terms of station, even if his/her class levels were Fighter, Ranger, Barbarian (or berserker, if they prefer), Rogue, or a member of the Samurai 3.x class. I remember, when the Ki power source died, that the devs mentioned perhaps doing an article on samurai like they did with gladiators way back, where there weree just extra options for existing classes. Now, with themes in the game (and non-DS specific thems coming soon), I think themes would be the perfect way to go for a lot of "Oriental Advantures" concepts. After all, there's always going to be people clamoring for a ninja, despite the fact that the monk, assassin, and rogue could all fill the ninja role perfectly, depending on whther you want the "historically accurate" ninja or the "shadow-magic using" ninja. But some people won't be happy unless they have a class anme with ninja on it, and I think theme would satisfy them as well. Especially since all 3 of those classes use DEX, and the theme encounter power could jut be DEX based. And, to the OP: Check out the Oriental Adventures forum on these boards. There's some 4e material there. I, myself, did an Oriental Adventures conversion for armor and weapons. Namely because the Dragonborn Empire in my campaign setting is an OA-style land, with dragons ruling as daimyos over the dragonborn populace. It's a nice fit, because Dragonborn concepts of honor fit well with bushido. |
| #11aryusSep 30, 2010 10:57:22 | Speaking of Oriental Adventures, anyone have any comments on L5R 4th edition? Is the system any good? Sorry about the derailing, but yes, the 4th edition L5R is very good. They cleaned up the system nicely to get rid of the most broken rules. The only downside is Alderac is being very slow and deliberate with their releases, but I guess that's a good thing if they get it right. As far as D&D4e Oriental Adventures, themes and a few house rules can easily fill in the gaps. |
| #12MirtekSep 30, 2010 13:11:23 | The only thing a 4e OA would really need would be a monster book. Bring back the hopping vampires |
| #13ChrisTheSSep 30, 2010 15:30:01 | Speaking of Oriental Adventures, anyone have any comments on L5R 4th edition? Is the system any good? Yes. Especially the creature stats, which now include defined wound levels (like in 1st edition) instead of requiring the GM to be able to remember the general wounds table... And it has a really nice character sheet. |
| #14MechaPilotSep 30, 2010 19:20:04 | The only thing a 4e OA would really need would be a monster book. Bring back the hopping vampires That's probably true for the most part, but there are additional things that could substantially add to the setting. Art of the "refluffed" weapons and armor would help peeople better visualize the setting, and feats to represent martial arts techniques. |
| #15sallaSep 30, 2010 20:24:47 | I would probably buy it sight unseen. I'm a sucker for Samurai! Maybe I'll just create my own now that I'm thinking about it... That's just it ... there is no reason why your fighter/ranger/rogue/warlord/swordmage/barbarian/warden can't be a samurai. Other than the whole 'honorable stick up the butt' thing, there is no difference. |
| #16ChrisTheSSep 30, 2010 20:27:47 | feats to represent martial arts techniques. I'd like to see these done as 'superior weapons'... |
| #17MechaPilotSep 30, 2010 20:42:58 | feats to represent martial arts techniques. Really? Because I think the fighting style feats that appeared in the Dragon Annual would be better suited to that. Bear in mind I'm talking about the techniques themselves, not the weapons. Of course martial arts weapons can be done as superior weapons, but how does a stunning/dazing/slowing/whatever pressure-point attack get represented as a superior weapon? I can see unarmed martial arts attacks as a superior unarmed weapon that does greater damage (representing the training one has put into hardening, strengthening, and developing the speed to create greater impact velocities), but the accompanying coolness of martial arts effects like pressure point attacks, iaijutsu, and chi powers would be better represented by the feats (IMO). |
| #18ChrisTheSSep 30, 2010 20:53:54 | I don't like feats that key off specific powers - usually they're for styles I want but powers I don't. |
| #19MechaPilotSep 30, 2010 20:57:03 | I don't like feats that key off specific powers - usually they're for styles I want but powers I don't. What about the weapon mastery feats? That works like getting multiclass powers related to using a specific weapon instead of keying off of other powers. |
| #20ceiling90Oct 01, 2010 2:31:32 | I'm of better agreement with weapon mastery feats. The style feats are wierd to me, they're better off making either Weapon Mastery Feats or build additions to the Slayer, I guess a Theme would be ok. For that matter, why not just make it a Sub-class for that whole "true" or noble samurai type. |
| #21Pyrate_JibOct 01, 2010 13:58:53 | I'd like to see a whole book of themes. Enough to cover all the classes/ kits/ cultures that we have seen in every previous edition of D&D. I would buy it sight unseen. |
