| #1curlybill_dupDec 10, 2008 13:17:32 | Thanks to an add for preprinted power cards on Amazon we now know the names of the new classes in the Player's Handbook 2 and I thought we might enjoy speculating on what we can expect from each new class. The new classes in PH2 are called Avenger, Barbarian, Bard, Druid, Invoker, Shaman, Sorcerer, and Warden. We know from the previews in DRAGON that Barbarian is a Primal Striker, Bard is an Arcane Leader, and Druid is a Primal Controller. I think that the Avenger is going to be Nature's Avenger and a Primal Defender and the Shaman will be the Primal Leader. I think that the Warden will be the much Discussed Martial controller who wards areas on the battlefield against opponants. Sorcerers and Invokers are probably examples of a new and as of yet unnamed power source similar to but more intuitive and less cerebral probably based upon Charisma. Thse are my speculation based upon what we have seen so far in 4e and my own experiances with past editions. Please discuss DALLAS ! ! ! |
| #2Kensan_OniDec 10, 2008 13:23:13 | Given that the PH2 is the Arcane, Divine, and Primal Source, I think we can deduce a few things. Barbarian, Druid, Warden, and Shaman will be the Primal Package. (Shamans always being the primitive spellcasters under previous editions, Warden sounds much like a woodsy Ranger varient to me) Sorcerer and Bard will extend options for the Arcane group Avenger and Invoker will extend the Divine group. (Vengence being a type of Angel helps identify it here, and Invoker was revealed as a Divine class in the Preview, I believe.) So there are my speculations. |
| #3vaalingrade_ashland_02Dec 10, 2008 13:37:48 | Avenger: Divine Striker, possilby with a ton of immediate interrupts. Invoker: Divine Controller, probably with a conjuration based build and a blast the crap out of stuff build. Bard: Arcane Leader Sorc: Dare I say Arcane Defender? Killed the warmage, took his stuff? We may see a familiar based build here too. Is it too much to ask for a dRagon Disciple PP? Druid: Primal Controller Barbar: Primal Striker Shaman: Primal Leader Warden: Primal Defender, possibly with a pet build. Races aren't looking very good at all. Lame gnome and (half) orc reprints, Goliaths (blech) glimmer of hope in the Deva rumors. Items: Musical instruments, Songblades, Totems. Probably some new survival gear and alchemy. Also, MMII will probably have new mounts and maybe non-combat pets. |
| #4immortoDec 10, 2008 13:45:29 | From www.dndinsider.com - dungeon (link on left side of page) - digital insider # 18 (then scroll down) Monday 12/15: We preview the invoker from Player’s Handbook 2. This new controller class has mastered the original source of divine power, and will introduce summoning to D&D 4th Edition. Avenger is indeed a Divine Striker. |
| #5abyssaldeathDec 10, 2008 13:51:11 | Sorc: Dare I say Arcane Defender? Killed the warmage, took his stuff? We may see a familiar based build here too. Is it too much to ask for a dRagon Disciple PP? I thought I remember reading somewhere that they held off on the Sorcerer till the PHB 2 because it was an arcane controller. They wanted to make sure it played differently then the Wizard. |
| #6williamhm75Dec 10, 2008 14:10:35 | Avenger: Divine Striker, possilby with a ton of immediate interrupts. Wouldnt warmage just be wizard now with some armour training? The warmage wasnt about defending allies so much as it was obliterating everything in its path. Druid: Primal Controller Agree with all of these. Races aren't looking very good at all. Lame gnome and (half) orc reprints, Goliaths (blech) glimmer of hope in the Deva rumors. Half orc may actually be interesting especially if they come up with interesting fluff like what they did with ebaron half orcs and orcs. Items: Musical instruments, Songblades, Totems. Probably some new survival gear and alchemy. And some other things as well, I expect invoker will have at least one new kind of impliment as well. |
| #7exposed_wiresDec 10, 2008 14:35:17 | I would love to see what the multiclass feats will be like. With all these spellcasters, I wonder how they'll keep them fresh and unique. |
| #8Lord_VentnorDec 10, 2008 14:37:31 | Aren't Shifters supposed to get a full PC Writeup in PHB2? |
| #9vaalingrade_ashland_02Dec 10, 2008 15:21:57 | Half orc may actually be interesting especially if they come up with interesting fluff like what they did with ebaron half orcs and orcs. I am made of doubt. Especially with Goliaths in as well, meaning we're going to have two thug dork races. |
| #10batshidoDec 10, 2008 15:31:19 | I am made of doubt. A second PHB with Divine in it and we're not getting a playable race of Aasmiir? Color me surprised. |
| #11sallaDec 10, 2008 15:41:13 | A second PHB with Divine in it and we're not getting a playable race of Aasmiir? Aasimar are now called Deva. ARE WE NOT MEN? WE ARE DEVA. |
| #12vaalingrade_ashland_02Dec 10, 2008 15:47:58 | Boy do I have a place in the world ofr the Deva if they're in... Not so much for any of the tohers though. I guess I could use shifters instead of the Miare. |
| #13batshidoDec 10, 2008 15:49:32 | I think Deva was announced as PHB2 or am I wrong? Aasimar are now called Deva. WEIRD. Not that I ever actually played one. I just got used to the horribly ineffective, caster-stat boosting, level adjusted piles being called a specific thing. |
| #14sallaDec 10, 2008 16:01:30 | WEIRD. Well, we shouldn't have to worry about them being 'piles' so much. According to the Races'n'Classes book, part of the reason for the rename is that it was very difficult for the staff to remember to use 'Aas' instead of 'Ass' when spelling it. ![]() |
| #15williamhm75Dec 10, 2008 16:36:45 | Well, we shouldn't have to worry about them being 'piles' so much. According to the Races'n'Classes book, part of the reason for the rename is that it was very difficult for the staff to remember to use 'Aas' instead of 'Ass' when spelling it. Yeah I rember reading that. Though hopefully their fluff will be better. |
| #16williamhm75Dec 10, 2008 16:37:55 | I am made of doubt. Maybe but I expect them to be different. After all all of the races so far are very different from each other, I expect them to continue that trend. |
| #17Lord_VentnorDec 10, 2008 16:40:23 | I am made of doubt. I wonder if I should try to build a Goliath Wizard when the book comes out... ![]() |
| #18lemonfrosted_dupDec 10, 2008 16:59:55 | I wonder if I should try to build a Goliath Wizard when the book comes out... Of course you should. |
| #19batshidoDec 10, 2008 17:00:37 | I wonder if I should try to build a Goliath Wizard when the book comes out... If you're going to cast, cast BIG. |
| #20williamhm75Dec 10, 2008 17:03:25 | If you're going to cast, cast BIG. I was thinkinh goliath bard, or artificer actually. |
| #21williamhm75Dec 10, 2008 17:09:48 | Goliath Bard: Dark resonant voice, like a avalanche. When he sings, others will listen, if they want or not. I was thinking dance, or tribal drums. |
| #22lemonfrosted_dupDec 10, 2008 17:10:37 | I was thinkinh goliath bard, or artificer actually. Warforged Bard. Sit at the table with a laptop and copy/paste poetry into a text to speech reader. |
| #23williamhm75Dec 10, 2008 18:34:26 | I was thinking of a real dark voice. Thunderous and all that. Dancind not so much, drums also not so much. Singing is in my imagination the perfect fit, which might come from my personal love for dark voices. Maybe. I was just thinking a really wild kinda bard, almost primal. Kinda like one of those guys you see with those really big drums. I just have this really awsome image of a goliath with tribal tattoos using the power of his drums and the songs of his ancestors. |
| #24williamhm75Dec 10, 2008 19:03:54 | That fits very nicely with something I once wrote. I was about to write a poem about war and stuff, when instead my mind and muse delivered a 2 page long shortstory straight from a newborn fantasy world. There were giants, which were the masters of the arcane and two armies that battled. Awsome story. I am so making goliath bard when the book comes out. This story really inspired me to make that character. Alternativley a half orc artificer would be really really cool. |
| #25Steely_DanDec 11, 2008 6:37:14 | -Deva -Gnome -Goliath -Half-Orc -Shifter -Avenger (divine striker) -Barbarian (primal striker) -Bard (arcane leader) -Druid (primal controller) -Invoker (divine controller) -Shaman (primal leader) -Sorcerer (arcane controller) -Warden (primal defender) |
| #26sir_duckmanDec 12, 2008 18:11:49 | Warforged Bard. Sit at the table with a laptop and copy/paste poetry into a text to speech reader. "Sniff Sniff" Stephen Hawkins would be so proud... |
| #27aranosDec 13, 2008 11:32:55 | I'm a huge fan of gnomes, I have always used them in my campaignes, I am therefore very excited about them getting a full write-up. I always use the Dragonlance/World of Warcraft version of the little guys. In my games gnomes have a huge love of explosions and property damage. |

| #29Omni-WyvernilDec 15, 2008 1:00:07 | Now that we have a preview of the invoker, do we have any ideas for what stats the other classes will use? Here's a list of the classes and their 'important' stats so far: Fighter: STR/DEX/CON/WIS Rogue: STR/DEX/CHA Ranger: STR/DEX/WIS Warlord: STR/INT/CHA Cleric: STR/WIS/CHA Paladin: STR/WIS/CHA Wizard: DEX/CON/INT/WIS Warlock: CON/INT/CHA Swordmage: STR/CON/INT Barbarian: STR/CON/CHA Bard: CON/INT/CHA Druid: DEX/CON/WIS Invoker: CON/INT/WIS Total number of classes using each stat (ignoring distinctions between primary and secondary stats): Strength = 8 Dexterity = 5 Constitution = 8 Intelligence = 6 Wisdom = 7 Charisma = 7 Some guesses: One theory that comes to mind is the one where a certain power type is associated with a specific stat. Thus, all Martial classes use STR, All Divine classes use WIS, all Arcane classes use INT, and all Primal classes use CON. Based on this, we can make a few guesses. Shaman: Constitution, Wisdom, and Charisma. A spirit summoner will probably make use of either one of the two mental stats (Wisdom if based off the druid, and charisma for interacting with spirits). Sorcerer: Intelligence, Charisma, and Dexterity. Avenger: Strength, Dexterity, and Wisdom. Warden: Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution. Alternatively, if they have one mental stat, they might be Strength, Constitution, and Wisdom. |
