| #1Alpha_dorkFeb 11, 2009 10:12:04 | My predictions are as follows . . . PHB3 – the power sources will be Ki (confirmed with announcement of the Monk), Psionic and Shadow Character classes will follow the 4-2-2 split by source and I’m guessing the source with 4 will be either Ki or Psionic. If Psionic gets four classes then the campaign setting will be a reinvention of Dark Sun (if it is Dark Sun then Elemental might also be the third power source). If it’s Ki then my guess is some form of Oriental Adventures (Kara Tur?) The races will depend on the power source split, but some likely candidates are as follows: Githzerai and Githyanki (they each could cross both Ki and Psionic) Shadar Kai and Doppleganger (who could cross both Psionic and Shadow) Half Giants (because each PHB so far has had a racial hybrid :D ) Your thoughts? |
| #2Cpt_MichaFeb 11, 2009 10:24:13 | Probably off. As far as the split goes. They pretty much had two iconic Divine classes that people would have been out and out over the moon if they hadn't released at launch (Cleric and Paladin), and they didn't have the Bard, or Sorcerer ready yet for Arcane. That's why we got the split. Phb III will probably be a two power source book with two power sources in it. Shadow and Most likely Psionics. With a 4-4 split. |
| #3Steely_DanFeb 11, 2009 10:28:24 | I'm speculating it will be Dark Sun, to tie in with Psionics being released in the PHB III. |
| #4Steely_DanFeb 11, 2009 10:32:15 | Phb III will probably be a two power source book with two power sources in it. Really, I'm thinking 4 Psionic, 2 Ki and 2 Shadow, and especially Ki as the Monk is already up for playtest in May. Something like: -Ardent = Psionic Defender -Empath = Psionic Leader -Illusionist = Shadow Controller -Monk = Ki Striker -Necromancer = Shadow Leader -Sohei/Soulknife = Ki Defender -Shaper/Wilder = Psionic Controller -Telepath/Kineticist = Psionic Striker |
| #5BolongoFeb 11, 2009 10:33:04 | Probably off. I'm with you so far. Shadow and Most likely Psionics. This is where it goes wonky. You do know that the Monk is confirmed, and thus Ki is a lock? My (symbolic) money is on 4 Ki / 4 Psi. The later to support the setting of Dark Sun. |
| #6TheLoneClericFeb 11, 2009 10:37:21 | My dearest dream is a 4/2/2 split with Psionics featuring in the primary. And Dark Sun as the setting. |
| #7Cpt_MichaFeb 11, 2009 10:38:43 | But then again there might not be four Psionic Classes total. Some of them seem kinda weak as concepts (The Empath in particular) The Psion is definitely a Psychic Power Source class as it's been mentioned in multiple books now, as well as having been mentioned as the class that ate Enchantment magic. |
| #8Steely_DanFeb 11, 2009 10:46:05 | The Psion is definitely a Psychic Power Source class as it's been mentioned in multiple books now, I doubt they will name a Psionic class Psion, as that would be like naming an Arcane class Arca, or a Martial class Martia. And the Empath is the Psionic only class (leader) that's been hinted at by the designers so far, if I recall. |
| #9GhostStepperFeb 11, 2009 11:08:31 | I doubt they will name a Psionic class Psion, as that would be like naming an arcane class Arca, or a Martial class Martia. Martia, Martia, Martia! [/jan brady voice] |
| #10Steely_DanFeb 11, 2009 11:16:27 | Martia, Martia, Martia! [/jan brady voice] My buddy did that the other day, cracks me up, good man, GhostStepper. |
| #11the_storytellerFeb 11, 2009 11:21:43 | Cpt. Micha showed the way and Bolongo revealed the truth. |
| #12Cyber-DaveFeb 11, 2009 12:24:00 | You know, I am willing to put money down on the Necromancer being a controller, not a leader. I have trouble imagining how anyone thinks that a class that summons undead, including minions that fill up spaces on the battlefield and thus control its shape, and debuffs its enemies in AoE effects, is anything but a controller. |
| #13the_badger_02Feb 11, 2009 12:46:31 | I'm quite a fan of 4/2/2. Of course my preferences really have no affect on what gets put in. My prediction for a 4/2/2 is Psionic 4, Ki 2, and, much as I hate to say it, Shadow 2. |
| #14Fabio_Milito_PagliaraFeb 11, 2009 13:21:11 | I would guess 3 power sources, maybe a 3-3-3 scheme? Psi-Shadow-Ki is my guess so they can get out with 3 more power book in 2010 I also guess that the phb3 will come between january and march 2010 |
| #15alisair_longreachFeb 11, 2009 15:51:02 | I concur that PHB3 will have four Psionic classes and two KI and two Shadow classes. We will probably get a Psionic class for each role, the Monk as the KI striker and Necromancer and Illusionist as Shadow classes. The 2010 campaign setting will not be Dark Sun. I think it will be either Greyhawk or Dragonlance. PHB4 will probably have four Elemental classes which hopefully will be designed to fit in as the Elemental Cleric of the Dark Sun setting of 2011. |
| #16aidan_blackthornFeb 11, 2009 16:13:06 | I would guess 3 power sources, maybe a 3-3-3 scheme? 3-3-3 is highly doubtful because it doesn't give them enough classes for a power book. Why is everyone obsessed with the Shadow power source? The Necromancer is not suitable for a player class at all. I'd like to Psionics, Ki and Elemental rather than Shadow. |
| #17DragoncatFeb 11, 2009 16:20:10 | 3-3-2 Psi/Shadow/Ki would work nicely. Psi could split the old Psion into Controller and Leader, plus Psychic Warrior eating the Soulknife and getting its stuff to form an awesome Defender. Shadow has the titular Shadowdancer-type Striker, plus Illusionist and Necro as two very different kinds of Controllers, one manipulative, the other summoning. Ki gets the Monk, plus an oddball that surprises everyone, something to make people actually appreciate Ki as something other than "The Asian Source". |
| #18oneirosFeb 11, 2009 16:25:52 | The races will depend on the power source split, but some likely candidates are as follows: Goliaths, which will be in PHB2, already fill a "half-giant" race role. (At least, that's their nickname in my campaign ;) ) |
| #19nerd_rage_dupFeb 11, 2009 16:29:31 | 2010 will be Rokugan (or a new Oriental themed setting developed by WoTC, Kamigawa perhaps?). You heard it from me first. |
| #20KM.549Feb 11, 2009 19:00:11 | Birthright. |
| #21captainswiftFeb 11, 2009 19:05:19 | 2010 will be Rokugan (or a new Oriental themed setting developed by WoTC, Kamigawa perhaps?). You heard it from me first. Rokugan is unlikely at best, as WotC doesn't own L5R. Kara-Tur is more likely, if they do an Asian-themed setting. (And yes, it's part of the same world as the Forgotten Realms, but it's not necessarily the same setting, as it could easily be lifted out and made its own world. Recall that it was presented in the 1e Oriental Adventures as an extension of [i]Greyhawk[i]) |
| #22protosswarriorFeb 11, 2009 19:13:44 | The 2010 campaign setting will not be Dark Sun. I think it will be either Greyhawk or Dragonlance. You do realize Greyhawk is still the default setting right? (Too be honest, I can't really blame you if you didn't notice given the massive flavor changes) As for Dragonlance...awesome..finally a return to good, old tinker gnomes! |
| #23celticmuttFeb 11, 2009 19:22:24 | You do realize Greyhawk is still the default setting right? (Too be honest, I can't really blame you if you didn't notice given the massive flavor changes) The Points of Light setting, which is the default, is not Greyhawk. |
| #24TheLoneClericFeb 11, 2009 19:24:58 | The Points of Light setting, which is the default, is not Greyhawk. Well, neither was Forgotten Realms. There are bits of Greyhawk that would play nicely into the PoL model. Not perfectly, but there is something about visiting Gary's world that does sound appealing. Just...give it a bit. Lets do something out there like Dark Sun or Planescape first. |
| #25alumanFeb 11, 2009 19:26:30 | My two cents: Ki/Shadow 4/4 - Ravenloft or Ravenloftesque world. PHB IV Elemental/Psionic 4/4 - Darksun |
| #26TheLoneClericFeb 11, 2009 19:29:37 | My two cents: I think Psionics is going to get more play. Ki/Psi really. But Aluman, I'd rather see your Al-Quadim + Elemental source idea come to pass with the PHB4. That would be pure gold. |
| #27alumanFeb 11, 2009 19:38:19 | I think Psionics is going to get more play. Ki/Psi really. But Aluman, I'd rather see your Al-Quadim + Elemental source idea come to pass with the PHB4. That would be pure gold. Ki/Psi Darksun Elemental/Shadow Al-Qadim could work. I'm not sure they will want two desert worlds back to back...but then they could turn Darksun into a water world esque world where perservers got out of control in still keep the 'apocalyptic' feel but now with WATER! |
| #28celticmuttFeb 11, 2009 19:40:03 | Well, neither was Forgotten Realms. There are bits of Greyhawk that would play nicely into the PoL model. Not perfectly, but there is something about visiting Gary's world that does sound appealing. Just...give it a bit. Lets do something out there like Dark Sun or Planescape first. I'd vastly prefer Dark Sun or Birthright to Greyhawk or Dragonlance. I don't have much hope for Planescape/Ravenloft/Spelljammer outside of Dragon articles though. |
| #29alumanFeb 11, 2009 19:42:37 | I don't think Birthright 4E would work, at least not to be recognizable as Birthright 2E. |
| #30TheLoneClericFeb 11, 2009 19:42:40 | I'd vastly prefer Dark Sun or Birthright to Greyhawk or Dragonlance. I don't have much hope for Planescape/Ravenloft/Spelljammer outside of Dragon articles though. I dunno. Ravenloft just oozes cool and it would make for a great tie in with the Shadow source and more monstrous races. And yes. Dark Sun FTW. |
| #31GhostStepperFeb 11, 2009 20:31:32 | I really like Ravenloft but i have a hard time imagining it working well with 4E. Characters doing crazy "powers" and being extra heroic (compared to low-levels PCs from previous editions) seems to be the total opposite of creepy gothic horror. The danger of sudden, bloody death is gone and everyone just recovers all their resources after a night's rest. The new edition seems to go in the direct opposite direction of what i would want in a creepy game. |
| #32the_badger_02Feb 11, 2009 20:32:37 | I'm sure I can't be the only one here who really wants something new when it comes to settings. To bring it up again, perhaps use the runner up in the setting contest that got us Eberron. Then again, I know that those particular settings were made with 3.5 in mind, but hopefully it's something that can be converted. |
| #33twinbahamutFeb 11, 2009 21:07:35 | I'm sure I can't be the only one here who really wants something new when it comes to settings. Then again, I know that those particular settings were made with 3.5 in mind, but hopefully it's something that can be converted. You're not the only one. I would also like to see something completely new. There were two other finalists in the big contest that gave rise to Eberron, and WotC owns the rights to both, so I would not be surprised at all to see them appear now. As for the PHB3 itself... Psionics and Ki are the front-runners, and I expect them to focus on those two and possibly add a class or two to an older Power Source. So, Ki, Psionics, and Martial would be my guess (and preference). |
| #34SilvercrysFeb 11, 2009 21:23:56 | My :I believe the split will be 4 Psionic/2 Ki/2 Shadow Classes may be: Psionic Psion or Wilder or - Psionic Controller Ardent or - Psionic Leader Psiknife or Soulknife or - Psionic Striker Psychic Warrior or - Psionic Defender Ki Monk - Ki Striker Samurai or Sohei or - Ki Defender OR Incarnate or - Ki Leader Shadow Ninja or Shadowdancer or - Shadow Striker Necromancer - Shadow Leader or Controller As for Campaign Setting... in my opinion, it's up in the air. Dark Sun, Ravenloft and Greyhawk are possibilities, and I would love to see Dragonlance get support. But we may also see something new. I'm unsure about races, too, but the Gith will probably be returning, as well as an insectoid race (Dromite), and the Shadar-Kai. Other than that, I'm hoping for something new. |
