I've been thinking about what kinds of books I'd really like to see, and was wondering if others on the boards shared my desires. Post the kinds of books you'd like to see in the near future.

1. Ritual Library. A book of nothing but rituals, similar to the Spell Compendium and the Adventurer's Vault. I suspect they'll just throw Rituals in with Arcane Power, but I hope they make a dedicated Ritual book.

2. Race-Based Series. Pick out 1 to 3 of the PHB races and expand upon them with race-specific options, much akin to the Races Of series. Leave race-specific material to a series like this rather than cluttering the Power-Source books with them. Specifically, I want some dragonborn-specific paragon paths (*ahem*wings*ahem*).

Honestly, I can homebrew all I need now that I have AV and can see how alchemy works. So I'mma ask for an Ecology book because even though I'd never us it, it'd be fun to read.

4E Dragonlance post War of Souls.

ugh please no. I know some people love dragon lance I just dont know why. The whole takehis moving the planet and the other gods being unaware of it was just stupid. As were those really powerful evil dragons taking over, where were the really powerful good dragons? Anyway if I want a dark setting where everyone is boned (which is what dragon lance is) Ill just play darksun or ravenloft.

4E Dragonlance post War of Souls.

Best suggestion so far
As Margareth Weiss will no longer produce Dragonlance materials for D&D (she said Wizards took back the rights to do so in 2009) so this is probally coming.

Love Dragonlance

The stealing the world thing was needed to clean up the dung pile that was the early 5th age setting and novels. Most of the overlord dragons have been slain now, the few remaining are the minor ones that occupy isolated areas away from the more stable nations. Things on Krynn in the current timeline are in flux, with a lot of political uncertainty. However many places are experiencing relative peace and stability. Heroes are definitely needed but I would not say that everyone is "boned".

Dark Sun is an original and interesting setting, I'll give you that but it’s hard to use Dark Sun content in non-Dark Sun games. In most campaign settings and home games deserts play a small or non-existant role. To use Dark Sun material will take a lot more work and reflavouring than let’s say droping the Harpers or the Knights of Solomnia in a typical fantasy setting. I think they should support Dark Sun in Dragon instead.

I'm enjoying Martial Power, so I'm excited for the rest of that series. I thought the Races of... books were kinda crappy on the whole, given how inconsiquential race ultimately was for the most part (not in terms of impact on class choice, but after that it disappeared) but with the new approach I think you could, probably carry the same concept further. That said I would prefer to see such further race expansions consolidated in the PHBs since not all the races would garner the same depth of treatment.

So far I'd say they're finding a reasonable balance between book content and magazine content. Some stuff just can't carry a book worth of material, though I think this is a good time to put a plug in for a "Best of Dragon" book, or at least for things like the Gnoll and Warforged write ups to end up in a PHB.

All I know is that the evil gods have way too much power in dragonlance, and those dragon overlords should never have happened in the first place. The only novels worth reading was up through the twins series. I never liked the setting to play in as the gods seemed to take center stage. Also every kender ever should die a grusome death, stupidest idea for a race ever.

You would not miss much if you went from Test of the Twins series to War of Souls skipping over everything in between. Dragonlance can be a one note world if you stay in the Heroes of the Lance period.

The gods were fairly matched it was just that Tahkisis was so much smarter and ruthless than the others. Eventualy they had enough and all of them ganged up and killed her (or at least set up the situation that would lead to her death). In the present the gods work more in the background. Also the good gods vs. evil gods motiff of the past has given way to much more complex situation were even gods of the same alignment jockey for position.

You can justify it all you want, all Im saying is I never liked the series. It just always seemed fairly ridiculous how often the good guys get screwed over. Do the elves have homeland yet or are both of them destroyed/conquered?

King Gilthas (Tanis and Luarana’s son) has led the elves out of exile to a new homeland, where he rules over a unified nation of Silivinisti, Qualanisti and Wild Elves.
Porthios and Alana (the only survivors from the War of Lance days) are waging a guerilla war in Qualinisti, while Silvinisti remains under Minotaur control. In the 3.5 Dragonlance book is says that the lands of the Wild Elves have been turned into a frozen wasteland by a White Dragon Overlord, but this may not be current (the people of Krynn have been doing a good job lately of knocking off Dragon Overlords).

Even the Draconians have their own homeland now and live in relative peace with the other nations.

I would argue, as I have in the past, that it's the uniqueness of Dark Sun that makes it a good choice for a full book, specifically because a lot of it isn't exactly drag-and-drop. Contrast, Dragon material needs to be very drag-and-drop in nature since that's, basically, the express intention of Dragon. Ravenloft, and the treatment it is recieving in 4e, is a good example of a setting that transplants well: Ravenloft had very few really different things about it most of which were themes and a cast of characters more than a restructuring of the basic DnD assumptions. Ravenloft was, mechanically speaking, at best a half step off the core setting. In that way the great cast of characters drops very nicely into almost any campaign.

The world of Dark Sun, much like the history of Forgotten Realms or the gods of Dragonlance, don't transplant that cleanly; something that justifies the publication of a campaign setting and a player's guide.

I also suspect that by 2010, after FR and Eb, they'll be willing to really push the IP with something markedly "different". Not to mention that DS is greatly complimentary to Psionics, which are likely slated for PHB3.

Very good points actually. I love psionics, probably one of the reasons I always liked Dark Sun. Id love it to be the next setting, either that or an entirley new setting specifically designed for 4e.

Id also like to vote for a races of series of books.

For purely nostaligic reasons, I'd love to see the return of the "boxed set"; haven't seen those in years. I miss the "treasures" that could be found inside such boxes: Big table-top maps, clear terrain overlays, player handouts, colorful posters, even a 16 page comic in Hellbound (a Planescape accessory). The revised Dark Sun box even had a cloth map; that's way beyond cool, if ya ask me ;).

Wonder why they decided to stop producing them? (right around the time 3rd edition launched I believe). Sure they sometimes "crunched" easily but they were fun.

The Women of DnD 2009 Calendar

How about the D&D calendars with big, flashy artwork, like they had in the mid-'80s? They were prevalent at the time but seemed to drop off the map in the early '90s. Lots of art by Elmore, Easley, Fields, Caldwell, and others I can't remember at the moment; if you like that style of D&D art (and I did ;)), then these calendars were a blast. I'd love to see such a thing take off again.

Most of the things I want are likely coming out in Core Mk II. Variant/supplemental rules, more monsters, the rest of the 3.5-Core classes that I actually care about, and so on. There are a few more things that I'd like, though:

-A few more campaign settings. I have my own setting, but that doesn't mean I can't pilfer ideas liberally. I mainly focus on political campaigns, so there are two settings that might come in handy: Birthright (from what I understand) and the not-D&D-yet Earthdawn (The most exciting RPG product announcement I've heard since 4e).

-DM tools. I like having quick reference tools for throwing together NPCs/monsters/campaigns. I have my own quick-hack Excel tools, but something like the Character Generator for DMs would be nice. I know about the in-browser tools, but they're a bit... clunky? Inelegant? I dunno.

I'd like to see Greyhawk get it's own Campaign book. I got into D&D at the very beginning of 3E and I never got to play in Greyhawk, but I read some of the stuff about it through the Living Greyhawk manual, and I find the setting to be very enticing. To me at least. :D

I agree with the idea of a Ritual Caster / Alchemist sourcebook with new Rituals and Alchemical Recipes alongwith new ritual components (like the ones from Draconomicon vol.1) and reagents (from Adventurer's Vault).

Other than that, Here's my list:

1. Ravenloft - I realize the Domains of Dread are being folded into the core cosmology as part of the Shadowfell, essentially making the Mists and the "tides of shadow" two sides of the same coin. I rather like this idea myself, but I think that a sourcebook could be rather nice as well. I'd want it to have descriptions of at least a few of the more important Domains of older editions (Barovia, Kartakass, etc.) while leaving new Domains for Dragon Magazine. I would also like this book to contain stats & descriptions for Darklords and other Ravenloft characters both old and new and PC stats/feats for playing as a Vistani (or at least a half-Vistani like in the 3e version).

2. Dragonlance - If we're getting Spelljamming back (which I love so much), then I sure as hell want my kender and tinker gnomes.

3. Spelljammer - With spelljammer/planar ships being folded into core, I want WotC to remember that Toril and other planets actually have port cities that accept spelljammer ships.
from Realmspace (1991): Waterdeep, Calimport, Chunming, Iiso, The Dock, and Rauthaven (The Resort).
from Greyspace (1992): the Free City of Greyhawk, Dyvers, and Irongate.
Also, I'd love either a book of ships or at least some Dragon articles... I don't like the idea of Tinker Gnome ships, elven ships, illithid ships, gith ships, and human ships from Shou Lung all using the same basic template.

4. Greyhawk - I'd like to see this setting and its unique people, places, and deities return continuing the plotlines from 3e's Living campaign.

5. Dungeonland / Beyond the Magic Mirror - These classic adventures would make an awesome demiplane, astral dominion, or perhaps a Domain of Dread.

6. Channel Divinity feats for evil deities.

7. the Psionics, Ki, Elemental, and Shadow power sources. Along the same lines, I would like to see Warlock pacts for Shadow and Elemental/Abyssal, and I'd like to see the power source for the Warlock class changed to Variable (depending on pact).

8. more backgrounds to choose from (or at the very least an option in the character builder to add homebrewed ones)

9. Urban Arcana - I loved the idea behind this D20 Modern campaign idea and I really feel that it needs to be redone for 4e as a full-fledged setting, fully compatible with normal D&D. My players could contest that pretty much all of my 3e campaigns were crossovers between Modern & D&D. Urban Arcana pretty-much stated right out that the two games were supposed to take place within the same cosmology and were supposed to be compatible, but the rules were just different enough that it always felt like putting the Bradys and the Osbournes in the same room; someone was going to get hurt.

10. a modified version of the Dimensional Ranger from D20 Future - could probably just be done as a Dragon article, but nonetheless I'd like to see this character archetype return. Basically, in one particular world/dimension scientists discover a technological way to simulate the arcane planar-traveling properties of spelljammers, or for a grittier feel, the tech involved could be simulating Shadow-jumping/Shadow-walking (ripping little planar holes in reality every time you make a jump) and would allow travel between Material Planes only.

11. Forgotten Realms - I really think we need Kara-Tur and Zakhara (Al-Quadim) to return to the realms. They both had nice, unique flavors that I felt really helped round-out the Realms. Potentially, they could even time the Elemental power source to come out at about the same time as the Zakhara info, since elemental magic and the manipulation of genies were always really big themes in Al-Quadim. Between Faerun, Kara-Tur, Zakhara, and Returned-Abeir we'd have a nice, rounded-out world full of cool stuff to see and do.

12. Abeir - now that this "long-lost twin" to FR has been revealed, and pieces of each were switched, I think Abeir could easily be its own campaign setting. The idea of a world in which the gods have no sway and the Primordials are so much more important could be really interesting to mess around with. And during the Spell-Plague, Maztica (from FR) got switched with the continent referred to as "Returned-Abeir", so part of the campaign setting could be dealing with how these world-changes.

13. some of the prestige classes from Complete Arcane, either as paragon paths or as feats, wherever each would make more sense

14. the planar metropolis of Union (from the Epic Level Handbook)

15. I would definately love to see a new "Playing..." article in Dragon every other month, if not every month for at least the forseeable future. List of Races I want, off-hand: Githyanki, Githzerai, Giff, Kender, Tinker Gnomes (from Krynn), Doppelganger, Bugbears, Fey'ri (half-eladrin/half-devil), Tanarukk (half-orc/half-demon), Lycanthropes, Spellscales, Kobolds, Catfolk, Dhampir (mortal descendant of a vampire), and Shadar-Kai.

I'm sure there's a lot more "wishlist" I'm forgetting right now, but I've probably already written more than anyone wants to read... sorry for essay, folks.

I remember "Races of.." weren´t sold very well, I´m afraid. The part of :"a day in the life, clothing, grooming, leisure, art and crafts, love, R. at war.." Other part could have been shorter (only a paragraph).

---

More races and classes for PCs.

The return of Dark Sun and Oriental Adventures (+ "1001 nights").

Monster classes (dragons, fey, werebeast, vampires, genies..).

True dragons and golems from 2nd and 3rd Ed.

Vampires with age categories (like dragons).

A [monster] player´s guide handbook (with new PC races and classes); dragons, undeads, feys, aberrations, reptilians..

After reading the Draconomicon, I've got GreyHawk and DragonLance penciled in for 2010 and 2011. Fanboys will pay money for them.

Personally, I'd love to see Ravenloft drawn up as a full fledged world like it used to be, complete with the core domains, Clusters, Islands and pocket domains.

Perhaps more "fluff" articles on the races in Dragon magazine, or some typical tactical drawings of various dwellings, like some sample Dwarven Strongholds, Elven villages and the like in Dungeon magazines.

I find myself oddly agreeing with you.

Oddly, because I know VERY little about Dark Sun.

On the other hand, most of my friends are currently planning quasi-disturbing events in order to make it happen. So it could just be runoff.

buyt Dark Sun seems to be the most unique universe I have ever had explained to me.

Dragonlance WAS cool, but not anymore.

And I'm itching to try Ebbron, but I'll have to do Living Ebbron(sp), as my DMs focus on their own worlds.

Something else I'd like to see:

A supplement for the Forgotten Realms that presents the setting for the new edition as if the Spellplague never happened.

This wouldn't appeal to everyone of course, but it would be nice for someone like me, who isn't a fan of the current incarnation.

Wouldn't have to be an actual hardback of course; a short series of articles in Dragon would fulfill much the same purpose. No harm in wishful thinking, eh ;)?

I so want to see a new "Playing..." articles in Dragon each month (or at least every other month), at least for the next year or so... then they could slow down and only do them as they think up new races.

My list of most wanted races to get "Playing..." articles:

  • Fey'ri - the eladrin/devil hybrids from FR
  • Tanarukks - the orc/demon hybrids from FR
  • Vistani - the Mist-controlling gypsies from Ravenloft/Shadowfell
  • Aasimaar/Deva
  • Gnomes - all 3 varieties; traditional D&D illusionists, Eberron artificers, & Krynnish Tinker Gnomes (especially these)
  • Kender - an entire race of good-natured, innocent, kleptomaniacs who are immune to fear :D
  • Bugbears
  • Kobolds
  • Orcs
  • Illithids - especially since the spelljamming illithids of 2e were more concerned with trade and business than conquest and evil
  • Dragons - very young dragons for PC use
  • Giff - humanoid hippopatamus mercenaries
  • Thri-Keen
  • Changelings - the human/doppelganger hybrids from Eberron
  • Shifters - the human/lycanthrope hybrids from Eberron
  • Daelkyr Half-Blood - the human/abberration hybrides from Eberron
  • Psiforged - the warforged offshoot with natural psionic powers
  • Catfolk - from the 3e Miniatures Handbook
  • Githyanki

Dark sun as a campaign setting. Seriously it fits perfectly with points of light.

So, I've only just noticed that WotC is in the middle of releasing a 5 book novel series set in Darksun. Interesting note, The only D&D settings getting novels right now: Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Dragonlance, and now Darksun...

So, it's circumstantial at best, but maybe we'll see Darksun soon.

I also hope to see Spelljammer, a Big Book O' Abberations (Ala Lords of Madness), and spread among the power source books, several new Multi-class only classes (vis Spellscarred).

Also, I'd really like a book of frivolous stuff. An update, if you will, of some of the oddest and silliest stuff from the previous editions.
Space Hampsters, Vorpal Bunnies, Kender, and so on.

They're also reprinting old Ravenloft novels under the "Ravenloft: The Convenant" imprint. (Makes me wonder what 'The Covenant' is in reference to.) I hope they republish all the old books; the Lord Soth books are so hard to find.

Also, new Ravenloft novels are being published right now under the "Ravenloft: The Dominion" imprint. Oddly enough, the novels don't say Ravenloft anywhere on the covers, but Amazon.com lists them as part of that novel series, and the one book I've read so far in the series talks alot about Vistani, Kartakass, and the Mists. The one I've read so far takes place in 1890 (the same time period as Masque of the Red Death) which makes me wonder if we're getting a 4e version of Masque/Urban Arcana soon. God I hope so.

Technology Through the Ages - A supplement where it showcases various different time-periods (most likely in the PoL world since that is the base) where technology has advanced. Each chapter would explore a different level of technology in terms of; items (weapons, items, armour, etc.), feats, PPs, etc. how it affects societies and races, etc.

Lets say there is 3 chapters:

-Enlightenment: This would cover the time period of early gunpowder weapons, Da Vinci type contraptions, etc. Hopefully have say a example city similar to Venice.

-Age of Sails: This would be an excuse mainly to bring in lots of pirates and swashbuckling. But it would give us more advance firearms, ships and perhaps we could have say... A fantasy Napoleon (this is sorta a wish to see Temeraire stuff in D&D).

-Industrial Might: Much more advance firearms such as revolvers, gatling guns, repeating rifles, etc. It would showcase industrialism, and could be our Steampunk chapter. With lots of airships, steam powered devices, ironclads, etc.

I'm wondering how a 4e Modern would work. Perhaps the idea of Roles might be harder to implement with over-reliance on Firearms that the setting would entail. There would likely be some paragon paths involved that might cover the roles better.

I liked Eberron simply because it was something different, so I just want another new setting at some point.

Barring that, if WotC could do a 4e-compatible version of Modern without making it feel like "D&D for kids" (Sorry, d20 Modern fans, but that's just the way I see it), I'd be all over it - especially if the mechanics for adventuring in different timelines (Past/Modern/Future) are there.

A book (or books) that gives the option to stray away from streamlined campaign and move into stuff like : crafting, trading, large scale warfare, seafaring.

Might be good to have some resources that expands, for example, the services you can find in a village, town, city. I can picture a few tables presenting different services, goods or specialty shops. Thief guilds rules / conventions. How patrols, guards, merchants are organized.

Perhaps a chapter with tables that allow you to create villages, town, cities on the spot, giving a choice of buildings and their contents to choose from. Would be a great time saver and might come in handy when theses PC decide to turn left instead of right. A handy toolbox of stuff for the DM.

Also not necessarily adventurer oriented things, sometime PC just need to spend their gold on some cool but totally non-useful stuff... like a statue of themselves, or a jeweled scabbard.. or just a big barrel of beer and, why not, a whole cellar.

Or maybe some adventurer oriented stuff, I'm expecting a bit more of theses in AV2, where are the caltrops? My PC loved theses. Or maybe a few more traps, with a reference list. There were some in the core books, given as examples, but it would be cool to have a properly organized listing.

I'd love something that allows PC to build their own stronghold, Inn, tavern.. and then upgrade it.

Funny, I write this and I can't help myself thinking theses things kept coming back in CRPG of DND released in the past few years. Maybe there's a sign there.

In my own campaign of 2nd and 3.5, I used to pick up theses from lots of Realms materials such as Volo's guide or the rules for army warfare in that old box of Birthright.

Always help give theses PC the feeling of freedom they required. Not to mention a few more ways to spend thousands of gold pieces on something else than magical gear.

Pretty much everything I want to see has been mentioned, with the exception of one. The Shadow Dancer as a class, or Paragon Path (I'd prefer an actual class though). Never was that powerful in 3e, but I loved the idea of it. Maybe a defender in the way a swordmage is, relying on marks and teleportation (flavored as shadowjump) but to the extreme. Or a striker that does something similar. Don't expect anybody to really agree with me here, just thought I'd throw it out there... Just in case WotC happens to hear.... ;)

I remember talking to a few people in the industry about this at one point. IIRC, it was because they weren't cost effective and ended up costing more than a book. If a box set were to be made today, it would be at minimum of $50. Which is too bad, because I used to love box sets as well. I think it's time to look at B&W printing and less slick paper ;)

Does anybody mist the old true dragons? (moon, stellar, sun from Spelljammer, mist, amber, cloud, steel, pearl, quicksilver, hex and tome).

I mist dragons all the time.

That's what the Disentegrate spell is for.

Temraire in dnd would be awsome. Though it would change the nature of dragons just a little bit. But I agree a fantasy napolionic era would be pretty freaking sweet.

I really would like to see a feat or some other mechanic added to the system for obtaining more than 2 at wills (more than 3 at wills for humans) over the course of a character's lifetime. Personally I've never understood the limit as one would think that as a character gets to higher levels they would probably have allot more knowledge and ability than lower level characters and to be honest it doesn't it make sense that a paragon and especially an epic tier character would be unable to do things that another heroic teir character of the same class starts out knowing? Besides, one would think that adding another at will (even if it is still a first level) would make battles more interesting than being restricted to the original two. Personally I think a more generic version of a feat like the warlock's double pact would be a great solution to this (being that you spend a feat to get an extra at will within your main class added to your at wills), especially if it isn't restricted to just using it once (I figure that by the time a character reaching into epic teir the character should be able to do pretty much any of the at wills in their class, especially if they are approching godhood or whatever other destiny). Does anyone know why at wills were so restricted in the PHB? I just thought I'd ask.

After reading the Draconomicon, I've got GreyHawk and DragonLance penciled in for 2010 and 2011. Fanboys will pay money for them.

Not the fanboys I know. That would be a money loosing venture here abouts unless Wizards did something signficant to alter the settings from FR, they're too sam-ey, and frankly uninteresting. Not that these worlds don't need to be addressed in time, but it would be nice if the team sat down and really considered if it was worth it.

We might see Truename in Arcane Power (1,2, whatever) at one point. But Bets are going that the Shadow Power Source will cover all 'shadow' casters and the like. Necromancer, Shadow Dancer, Death Knight, etc stuff...though there might be a Shadowcaster Paragon Path for Necromancer. That'd be cool.

Psionic Power is a book I'm really looking forward to...with PHB ??? That covers Psionics. But something just hit me. Shadow Power. Elemental Power. Mehehehehe! Those books are going to be fun. Shadow Power 2 please.

Does anyone know why at wills were so restricted in the PHB? I just thought I'd ask.

I'd say it has something to do with the fact that from lvl 11 onwards you're burning through 4 encounter powers, 1 daily power and maybe a daily magic item use in an average fight. Who has time to use at-wills?

Having more at-wills would encourage you to use them more, and that would amount to gimping your damage output.

I guess I can understand that, still, I have to wonder if it wouldn't be better to have more choices for when you have to deal with the hoard of minions and other lesser enemies on your way to the BBEGs? Also if one is in a longer battle (say 10+ rounds) it think it would be nice to have more choices but then this also assumes that future releases like AP, PHB2, etc are going to come out with new at will powers that one is going to want to add to one's character's power sellection. Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to play 4th edition yet myself (my gaming group kind of crumbled due to the pressures of real life and people having to move away for work, etc and those that are still around aren't particularly 4th ed fans) so maybe I'm worried about nothing? Btw, approximately how many rounds does the typical battle take in the new system? How many rounds tends to be a long battle? If they really do tend to be less than ten rounds a battle all the time then I guess at wills probably aren't all that worth worrying so much about? Sorry to get so far off topic but I thought it was a good time to ask these questions. Back on topic, I hope that the Psionic power source includes things like the Psiforged and translations of some of the 3.5 edition psionic classes. Also I think that it should be schedualled to come out in tandem with the Dark Sun setting as that would be the perfect setting to show off the Psionic power source. :D Beyond that, I also hope that Ravenloft and Planescape come out soon as well.
