May 06, 2010 12:55:41 I love poster the 4th edition poster maps. It's nice to have a map you can just whip out at a moments notice. Dungeon Tiles are great (I've got them all, sometimes twice) but if you just want a quick play surface, digging out the tiles and setting them up can be a fun sink. So far, the 4th edition modules have included some great maps, including the new one in hammerfast. The problem is, sometimes I don't want to buy a module just so I can get a map.

I think WoTC could make a killing by selling poster map packs. 5 or 10 poster maps bundled together by theme.

Possible themes:
- Inns / Pubs / Stores
- Boats / harbours / nautical
- Dragon lairs
- Castles
- City streets
- Wilderness

Something to think about.....

Of course, since they abandoned that product line, it should give you an idea on how it worked out.

I thought those were for the Miniatures game actually, which explains why are they discontinued.
Also, those locations were pretty specific ones, with an adventure pre-made for them.
(sidenote: anyone converted Hellspike to 4e? I never had an opportunity to use it and I switched to 4e now)

May 07, 2010 19:47:34 Fantastic Locations maps were indeed published for the miniatures line, with a small 3E adventure to accompany them. That said, most of those maps were also perfectly suitable for general D&D play. Even quirky ones like the Teleport Temple fit 4E's high fantasy concept, though they probably won't be as reusable as something like the King's Road.

I would say that the product line should have been a big winner, being able to provide utility to many different customers - but it wasn't, for some reason that I can't identify.

I saw and ignored those sets back when I was DMing 3rd. However, once I started DMing 4th edition, I snapped up all those packs up. The entire tactical combat aspect of 4th really pushes for battle maps with detailed features far, far more than 3rd ever did. I suspect that if Wizards were to try selling map packs again (with all the minis detrius removed), it would be far more popular nowadays than back then.

Two maps; outside and inside of the boat on different posters (so you can have both up at once). Reverse of the inside of the boat should be a dock (so you can assault a boat from the docks or visa/versa). Not sure what the reverse side of the boat should be? Warehouse, deserted island, diving bell?

Wizards released a couple of sheets of ship-themed Dungeon Tiles to their RPGA DMs as part of a rewards program. I have 3 sets, somewhere. I *heart* my ship-tiles!

May 17, 2010 7:02:48 I dont know what the cost is for the poster maps, but if they did a 50 dollar mega set with as many poster maps as they could fit into it I would buy it in a second. Assuming each map is double sided so has 2-4 rooms each. If they could fit 15 maps (each with 2-4 rooms) that could be 45+ encounter I as a DM could design without ever reusing a map. And with 45 rooms repeated uses wouldnt be bad.

Of course they could make the maps in a series. But man I like the idea of the maps more than the dungeon tiles. Ive have some dungeon tiles but dont uses them much, I want poster maps.

I was just thinking the same thing the other day. Collections of poster maps would be excellent... without monster tags, secret doors, traps printed on the maps - seriously, this makes them pretty much useless. Many of the maps from the map gallery are too small (20 pixels per square) to be of any practical use without a serious compromise of image quality. And there are some nice maps in there!

Anyway, I think this is a great idea. With all the interesting terrain possibilities in 4e... I know a lot of people will say photoshop or a battlemat is all you need, but a) i have no artistic ability, and b) it takes time away from other aspects of the game such as creating an interesting story arc or a cool npc, etc...

I really like the poster maps from the published adventures, but they are few and far between. More of these as a stand alone product would be outstanding!

Other ideas for poster maps...
- Forest Ruins (above and below ground)
- Lost Tombs
- Swamps
- Underwater Caves (nautical theme)
- Snowy Mountains
- Planar Locations... for example, the Nine Hells
