that doesn't mean they cant be in the PHB, most, if not all, of the PC races are in the MM.

But not really vice-versa - did they reprint the PC races infos in the MM?

this was what we were given for the races,

Here

Races- first letters Gn, second letters o, e, and h, and one has the last letter of r.
Gn........Gnome

Not much imagination and too much wish-thinking, young padawan...

Could be...

Gnoll

It have a certain popularity around.

(And I'd rather get new racial writeups, and have racial feats and all added more later)

#11

I would like to point out that the gnoll is in the MM, almost any possibility is in the MM, almost no doubt that they would put in gnome before they put in gnoll

i think it would be doppelganger for either the 2nd letter O or last letter R
kobold is a possibility for O also

Shadar-kai for h?

But then, why reprint something who is already in the 'core core'?
#13

to be more in depth, and to give all the fluff that comes with other races, the template is usefull for creating NPC's but the more info the better the PC

We've been told there's five races in the PHB2 and some of these may be full PC writeups on monsters in the MM in the way we got a full writeup for Warforged in Dragon this month which builds on what's in the MM.

Also drow are in the MM but will be fully fleshed out in the FR Player's Guide along with the Genasi (so neither will be in the PHB2 according to stated design rules of not repinting material). MM writeups are barebones and more useful for NPCs to give class levels to than for PCs. Heck the warforged in Dragon was even give 2 race-exclusive paragon paths.

GNome

GEnasi or GOblin

Drow or DuergaR or DOppelgangeR

HObgoblin

KObold

SHadar-kai

although as pointed out the drow and genasi are probably out

since the genasi will be in the FR Players Guide it seems unlikely they will also appear in the PHB2

I think they'll stand by their decision of kicking out the gnome and half-orc, the gnome especially.

I hope they don't add too many races, a civilisation can only have so many races with each being interesting and generally accepted by the population. Take star wars (the movies), it's pure chaos basically, you can't really learn about each race. Lord of the Rings on the other hand gives you a good idea about dwarves, elves, humans and halflings.

I hope they stick with subraces, not because they are so interesting but because you can group them as one. To players and theoretical population of the world the 11 species of elves are all 'elf'.

Because 8 years is supposedly the life expectancy of an edition of DnD and it has been stated that there will be a new PH, MM, and DMG every year.

IMO both your lists are wrong as the clues so far only support 1 race from each list (Gnome and Doppleganger). Its possible there's secretly more races they've been keeping secret, but I doubt it.

gnome, half-orc, shifter, warforged and....aasimar/angeltouched.

I would like too avariel (winged elfs), centaurs, chitine (spider-like from the FR underdark), bairaur (like ram centaurs from the planar handbook), wemic (lion centaurs) in the future,

Why not too gobling, bugbear, hobgobling and kobold, shadar-kai and perhaps too goliaths, raptorans and spellcalles.

I'm going with gnome for G, if not in the PHB2 then it'll be in the Eberron book. If not gnome then possibly gnoll. The other g could be githzerai or goblin (all four have entries in the MM).

Half orc I doubt but I do forsee it making it into a Dragon article.

I'm going with Shadar-kai as well especially if the PHB2 covers Primal and Shadow sources.

FAERIES? thats a random anwser no offience but i don't see that happening i mean there are very few farie like creatures that are pc worthy. Half giants only if phb2 has psionics if not then you won't see them untill psionic handbook. Warforged, Shifters, and Drow are world specific player charicters and won,t be seen untill forgoten realms and eberron. As for aasimer if so it would be released under the name celestal like it said in the preveiw book

It's my thinking that kobolds will probably grab the spot with the "second letter o" in PHB2. There are but just a few competitors...

Goliaths - They have been mentioned that they will be around in faerun and possibly later but there has been no mention of them possibly having a spot in phb2

modrons - just not as popular as kobolds and there are still plenty of people that have NO idea what they are :p Heck I didn't even know what a modron was until a very late issue of dragon just a few years ago.

goblins - I think they will keep them as a MM race.

hobgoblins - This I think is the only real good competitor for that spot.

Goatfolk???? lol

Either way I really honestly believe it will be kobolds due to their increased popularity over these last 2 editions. That and the best thing I hear about whenever races of the dragon is ever brought up is "OMG THE KOBOLD STUFF WAS GREAT!!!!" So I think by now they realize how great being a little scaley underdog is =)

OR AT LEAST THEY BETTER >.O THEY BETTER HAVE THEM OR ELSE!

I'm hoping Gnome, I love the little guys and often played them.

I hope that they also release a Shadowfell heavy race (sorta like the Eldrin are heavy Feywind). The Shadar-Kai would be the prefect kinda, a race heavy with the Shadowfell yet human enough to group with.

Also the halflings are small creatures so maybe a Large race would be nice to see.

But in 4E they are much different then they have been in previous editions

Well not much different really. They're just much closer to how they were in 1st edition where they were more illusion/elusive types rather than the tinkerer. About the only departure I saw was removin the bulbous nose which makes since as the 4e gnome is the forest gnome not the earth gnome. The picture doesn't show a beard but that's a toss up on forest gnomes as to the presence of them.

What others keep talking about is gnomes using illusion and shadow but despite early talk I'm starting to suspect illusion isn't part of the shadow power source. This comes from gnomes being fey not shadow origin and the recent dragon article giving a bunch of illusion powers to wizards. Also a lot of people expressed a dislike of shadow being used for both illusion and necromancy and the existing material paints shadow as much more about necrotic energy not illusions.

Though I am not guessing on the others, I will put in what I think about a couple of hot spots...

Gnome is a lock. Period. (Illusionist Shadow class will go with it)

The Half Orc will never be published inside a PHB again. Expect the best shot for publication would be Eberron, where the Orcs are trying to get along with their former enemies, the humans. I prefer this to the turning them into Teddy Bears.

Drow are FR Player Guide material, and the Warforged is staying in Eberron. The Shifter could make the change to the PHB2, but the Eberron campaign setting would need to be released after the PHB2 for that to happen. No one is sure if that is the plan or not.

I expect that the Planescape setting is planned for a future release, since Sigil is mentioned in the DMG.

Also the PHB2 is now cofirmed as 'arcane, divine, and primal heroes'. No shadow. Plus with illusion being put out on Dragon already for Wizards I don't think we'll see a dedicated Illusionist class but instead the Arcane Power book due out in April and the PHB2 in March (no date on Eberron yet but probably June or thereabouts) we'll see illusionist as a build option with paragon paths for Wizards.

I think it's safe at this point to seperate illusion from shadow since shadow seems to be heavily associated with necrotic energy now. Also there's an Undead sourcebook due out in January.

For races I can say that it would seem Goliath and Shifter are in though there may be a rename or the PHB2 cover may represent similar races but new. Still not totally sure on Gnome but it holds a high chance.

Warforged defintely seem to be an Eberron book or they may decide not to reprint them from Dragon since anything in Dragon is now being considered 'core' and will find it's way into the DDI D&D Compendium within a month after the monthly compilation for Dragon and Dungeon.

I don't remember where I read it but I am completely sure that everything in D&D Insider is considered OFFICIAL. There are no more optional rules. If it is published either in print or in DDI it will be official. You can use all the material from DDI in an official RPGA game. That alone makes DDI very official.

It is official yes, but it was also stated that nothing in DDI would be exclusive to DDI. That way people aren't required to subscribe to get anything extra. Therefore the Warforged will be put in some book somewhere(My guess would be Eberron). I would also think that shifter and doppleganger(Changeling) will be in the Eberron players book along with Kalashtar.
#69

Grazel

Jun 27, 2008 12:42:18
Actually they have stated things relating to DDI exclusive content. Most indications seem to point at half-orcs and monks. Also the warforged is free for everyone as long as you have an account. DDI will have at least 2 tiers with some stuff available to anyone with a free account plus extra stuff (and some of the more advanced 'cool' features of the DDI tools) for those with a paid subscription account. Of course all of that is subject to change but for now everything put up there is free for anyone who creates an account which costs nothing.

They've stated that anything put out by WotC (print or DDI) will be considered "Core" and "Official", that doesn't mean it's REQUIRED to be used by a DM. WotC's definition of "Core" seems not to mesh with a lot of player's definition where "Core" is only the first three books (PHB, DMG, MM).

OFFICIAL does not equal CORE.

Exclusives are for things that a minority of people want but is not completely in tune with the new direction of this new edition. Like the Half Orc. Most of the content that is gonna be only on DDi is, I am guessing here, adventures, Unearthed Arcana type rule options, and usable NPC's and cities.

It is great stuff, had been for years, but not worth the ransom that Wizards wants.

Well, I think the Game Table alone, for sick players to attend, is worth the ransom and then some. But that's just me. When a crucial plot twist session doesn't happen because a couple people home sick, I would pay a lot more than what WotC is charging to let them come online and play with us.

So? Does something being core somehow make it mandatory? Will the WotC strikeforce come into my room and take my books away from me if I exclude something core (perhaps I think the new Sorcerer is unbalanced and rather then take the time to house rule it, I simply exclude it)?

I don't know why you keep harping on about DDi not being CORE. In 4e saying whether or not something is core is meaningless. Things are either setting-specific (Sharn is a setting-specific city) or its setting-neutral (PHB is setting neutral).

It is great stuff, had been for years, but not worth the ransom that Wizards wants.

How do you know how much WotC wants for issues of Dungeon and Dragon? I haven't seen any announcements on price for those yet.

These seem to be a lock:

Gnome
Goliath
Shifter

My hunch is that the fourth race is Doppelganger. Any thoughts on a "He" race for the fifth slot?

This post isn't getting enough love. I've done the logic crunch myself, using the two sets of hints, and this seems to be the most likely possibility by far.

My initial guess at the "he" race is an aasimar remake, with a name playing off Helios (the sun in Greek). Anything hell-related is unlikely, as we already have tieflings in the PHB.

15 bucks a month, 10 if you pay a year in advance. It is called DDi (Dungeons & Dragons Insider)

Woah. That's a great leap in logic there. Not sarcastic, I mean it. That's great! I hope that's what it is, since I really want aasimars covered. Hell, I wanted them covered in the PH, drop half-elves. Not that I don't like half-elves, but I think if you're dropping one half-human race, you might as well drop the other and just make them both DDi. In fact, makin' 'em DDi, if Warforged is any indicator, just means more detail and awesome stuff than they would normally get in a rulebook, so the fact that half-elves are my second favourite 3.5 core race actually informs my opinion that they should have been DDi, and not PH.

No, that's how much DDi costs. From The FAQ
Dragon and Dungeon Magazines are included as part of your subscription. Nonsubscribers will also be able to purchase individual PDF issues of the magazines (pricing TBD).

So no. We don't know the price of Dragon or Dungeon.

The pdf files will not, as far as I heard, contain everything that is inside DDi. It will be like a "best of" and be quarterly.

At least, that was one of the theories.

To have pdf's of the mags like what is inferred makes the price of DDi that much more of a rip.

I would think that when they get to the PHB that supports the shadow power source you will get the work up there.

Actually a compilation of ALL dragon and dungeon will occur monthly. If you look at the pdfs of the articles put out this month you'll even see page numbers and the issue number on them.

Within 30 days the content of the comipilation will be added to the D&D Compendium.

There's a few gaps in the page numbering but I suspect that'll cover the 'articles' that are currently up that are roughly 1 page in length and not available as a pdf download.

And there's no reason DDI/Dragon/Dungeon content can't be core and official. So you have to pay for it, you have to pay for every book unless you pirate a scan of it.

As for the price of DDI if it includes Dragon and Dungeon and both go for 3-5 a piece that's already 6-10 of the monthly fee of DDI meaning the rest of the tools you get (assuming a 15/month cost) is 5-9. That doesn't sound unreasonable to me depending on exactly how they handle things.

The only unreasonale part is that from my understanding you have to buy all of it. I can't get just Dragon (the only thing interesting to me) for say $5.99 a month

Yeah, you either have to subscribe to everything, or just Dragon or Dungeon on a month to month basis. That sort of sucks for those who don't want the Visualizer and Game Table and the rest of it. I mean, I want the Visualizer and Game Table A LOT. But some people don't, and that sort of sucks for them.

They already stated that the pdf compilations of Dragon and Dungeon will be available for purchase seperately so if you don't want the DDI tools then you can buy the magazines seperately, and you don't even have to subscribe, you can buy individual issues. This is smart business as it allows the people who get into things later to buy 'back issues' for Dragon and Dungeon if they want them.

Well from my understanding the visualizer is packaged as part of the character builder/character tracker but can be used seperately of the others.

The game table is bundled with the dungeon builder since the dungeon builder probably won't have much use without it and they heavily overlap on resources and UI.

What we may see at some point is tiers of subscription where there's a 'full bundle' price or you can purchase access to specific components, and of course the full bundle would be a small discount over the total of each of hte pieces.

We'll have to see how WotC decides to handle it and hopefully they can think outside the box some since this is a concept that is new to them and they could do a lot of damage to themselves and the D&D brand if they handle it wrong.

A full issue pdf of both is available every month either for download seperately from DDI (no pricing info on that yet) or if you're a subscriber, it's included.

I'm going to need a cite for that considering it contradicts everything we've seen and been told so far.

with Tiefling being a new major play in the general races wouldnt the Aasimar pretty much be a shoe in for the PHB2?

They've reimagined the Tieflings, so it's not 100%. I'd certainly like to see them, but I admit I can't think a way of making them a counterpart without having them have to be mentioned (which they weren't) in the Tiefling's PH descrip

Probably because they said they'd put out one a year, and after 8 years, we should have 5e on the shelves. :D

That's probably not too far off. I don't have any issues with that, per se, since the average lifespan of any given edition of any given game in the RPG industry is something around 3-5 years. So 8 is double the average pretty much. I'm ok with that.
