Ravenloft 4th Edition Poll

I don't know if anyone ever tried to get a poll going, or even a list; for devoted fans? Why not try. Whose with me?

Jan 11, 2012 8:21:59 I'm currently updating the 3rd edition Castle Ravenloft adventure to 4th edition. This sort of thing is actually pretty easy. Most of the monsters exist already, and 4E makes it very easy to make new monsters (I mostly reskin existing ones, only occasionally making them brand new from scratch).

So unless you want a brand new 4E twist to Ravenloft (like what they did with Forgotten Realms), I'd suggest just tracking down all the old Ravenloft books that you can find and use them with 4E mechanics. The stuff that makes a setting is mostly fluff anyway.

The one mechanical thing I'd recommend is the Depair Cards from the Shadowfell boxed set. These are great ways to represent Horror, Madness, etc. checks. The PCs see something really crazy? They are all attacked vs. Will, on a hit they get a Madness card.

Jan 11, 2012 8:56:01 I've always loved horror as a genre, but it's darn near impossible to evoke in a game. Especially a game like D&D where your character sheets have like 75% of their square inches devoted to things you use to hit monsters with.

That said, Ravenloft was among the most popular modules of all time in numerous polls on the subject (and it's no wonder that spun off into its own setting as a result), so it must've been doing something right. Why not, eh?

Jan 11, 2012 9:26:26 If you are talking about the Domains of Dread setting with all of the different domains and lords, that itsn't likely. The domains of dread have been placed in the Shadowfell and several of them have been detailed, but they are much smaller and insular than the old version. It might be nice to see a Ravenloft campaign book like Neverwinter or the upcoming Menzoberranzan called Ravenloft and detailing the domain of Barovia and Castle Ravenloft with Strahd and his minions, but as I said I can't see a return to the old Ravenloft - Domains of Dread setting.

Defnitely something like that, which might indicate that I am more hung up on semantics than context. I'm an editor* -- that comes with the territory.
