Just as I finish Elemental Evil - Prince of the Apocalypse, with all the fluffyness, the thematic elemental spells (evocation / transmutation for the most part, which is great, Evocation needed those "save" cantrips), the 4 elementals Primordial-gods, etc. I put the book on the table...

And wonder...

What will / should / MUST be in the Ravenloft book THAT THEY WILL RELEASE [I'm starting a hunger strike until they do! Still read the 2nd and 3rd edition, along with the 4th edition version that they... OH NO THEY DIDN'T! Shame, SHAME I SAY!!!]

I hope they'll put (and wonder about your ideas on the fallowing) :

- Feats [even if optional, they should add 4 or 5 to fit the whole theme]

- Class Archtypes [PLEASE : I know we have the death cleric, the Oathbreaker Paladin & the Necromancer Wizard, but... MORE!]
- Necromantic spells & Cantrip (we definitivelly need more of those)

- New undead creatures (duh!)
- Thematic Character [like that guy... Vlad... Dracul... something! ( just kiddin :p )]
- Some storyline along the road [From what level to what level should this adventure be now?]

Wonder with me... FEED the futur product with ideas [in case anyone ever read that post] : what else should they put in that book? What do you see in the options I mentioned (heck : suggest your own spells/Class Archtype/etc. for all I care)?

Don't need new undead creatures, just need them to make cool villains out of the ones they have.

I would like to see better feats that give options with int, wis, and cha.

As a slightly dissenting view, I'd rather not too much at all be done by way of feats. Maybe one or two, but the flavor of Ravenloft should not be accomplished through feats. Some of us don't use feats, and unlike more recent editions, 5e is meant to be played just fine, as is, without feats.

I'd actually like a fairly short book/supplement that directs how to make good use of the options already avaiable in 5e for accomplishing horror, with some tips of how to do this in the Ravenloft setting.

I understand your point : Ravenloft isn't "WoW with darker shades" (What Ravenloft would have pobably end up being in the 4th edition... :s ).

Still... offering some options is always cool. Since feats are optional anyway, I think they could add some (maybe you are right : 1, 2 or 3 fitting is better than 4 or 5 that just don't mean anything). Like arnwolf said, they could add options that rely on INT / WIS / CHA , since those abilities are related to fright resilience, mind control resistance, etc. (like having advantage on saves vs the effec linked to the ability, along with something else, nothing to powerfull, just fluffy)

Last but not least, they could add backgrounds... I love the background so far but I would like to see some more options alog that line (Idk... a dark aristocrat that would like to bring down the master but was raise by his familly as mayor and interim between the people and the "high born lord", trained in Arcana & Deception, the first as as searcher for "understanding the dark nature of it all" & the other for "not being found out").

I'd love to see a 5E treatment of Ravenloft that included a gazetteer and details on the dark lords...some new creatures too (there were lots of interesting Ravenloft-specific beasties back in the 2E era). Also, I'd like to see mohrg, my favorite animated-intestine serial killer undead get a 5E upgrade.

They could even make it last a tiny bit longer by allowing the player to face the evil entity that granted the lord his vampiric nature! Always loved the devilish cavern underneath the mansion in the 3rd edition.

Also, going for progressives expeditions would be better than a full fledged assault that last 20 sessions of non-stop combat... Imho the progressive advance in the 3rd was putting the players in a more progressive mood of the task at hand, allowing them options to lessen the lords power, than the 2E was... but the 2E had indeed some nasty cool monster (loved the beast fusion in it)

WOTC and mike Mearls already said very clearly, they are NOT going to release any campaign setting books.  Half of the boards are kicking and screaming for Forgotten Realms Camoaign setting, which would come out way sooner than Ravenloft.

Dont hold your breath....just keep calm and....invent your own Ravenloft setting based on prior books

It would be nice if they'd do a revamped/updated/sequel to Castle Ravenloft, and released a short players guide like they've done with Elemental Evil.

Hmm, now I just want to run the original Ravenloft in 5e.

Our group just began I6 Ravenloft! They were crushed turning the first encounter with Strahd, he even broke the sword they recovered during LMoP! (foreshadowing anyone?) Now they are on the way to the gypsy camp...

Started up a Ravenloft game just last week. You can really do alot just with what you get in the books already. There are already optional fear and horror rules and sanity rules aswell (Although I dont use the Sanity rules since they felt more CoC then Ravenloft). There are also a select few Ravenloft monsters in the MM and to be honest alot of other monsters can be "created" by just palette swapping some of the existing monsters or making small mods. The biggest part of Ravenloft for me was allways how it was played and the themes and campaign world and not the rules. And if youve got Domains of Dread for 2nd ed, you can pretty much use the power check rules as they worked then.

I would still love to see a Ravenloft book, even though it is on my third place for a new 5e setting. And to get back on track what I would like to see in a setting book would be new Ravenloft specific Backgrounds and maybe the Half-Vistani race.

I would love a campaign book for an upcoming season for Ravenloft.  I would also love to see one from Dragonlance.  But if I had to choose, I would pick Ravenloft.

Perhaps set it for next year Halloween time.  This year obviously is too soon and won't happen.

Well..  since I started this post,  dealing with the "they won't do campaign settings" thing, I wrote my own itteration of Ravenloft... [still gonna buy the book if they ever do it]. But so far...

level 1 to 3 : Discovering Holy Barovia

Player's enjoy & discover the beautiful realm of Barovia where the young Sergei (paladin) prepare his wedding with Tatiana as a surprise for when his older brother, Strahd (a warrior who just secretly started multiclassing into a wizard) will be back from his crusade. Sergei engages the player's to help out since so many of the troops have been gone for said crusade (for about 2 years). They clean up bandit camp, fight off baby-stealing harpies, etc. [in a really open approach : no linerar gameplay, not force to do any or all of the possible quests, also offering an occasion to create a fluffy reason for the path each classes take (ex : paladins are given an Oath for their help to Barovia, Warlock discover landmarks that helps them contact supernatural entity, etc.) until ...] eventually they discover a gloomyer side to the land as they face of with a dark magician who seems to know a lot more about the royalty than a common spellcaster should... almost like he's financed by one of them to understand the dark art...
Then Strahd came back, learned about the wedding (with the woman he secretly longed for) & broke mad. Brother against brother, soldier (fan of Sergei) against soldier (loyal to Strahd)  : Barovia was crushed in a foggy bloodfest. As the fog covered the view but enchanted the sound of the massacre, Tatiana ran away and killed herself, just before Strahd could save her. Player's either run and get lost in the fog, or are reduced to 0 Hit point during the event (various reasons), and fall unconscious, afraid, with all hopes lost...

level 4-5 : Rediscovering the town of Barovia

Player wake up, facing a gloomy, darkish, foggy land... they find the town of Barovia and it's land of terror, which they can't leave because of a mysterious fog that causes Nightmares (limiting their rest [no short reast abuse in Barovia my friend... even if I'm all for the "players should feel cool" approach, this is Barovia, not Costa-Coolos-easy-abuse-land]), madness (taking over as they ear/see/etc. loved one suffering in it). Undeads, Dire animals, mad man, etc. are plaguing the town's streets, sewers, etc. and the players, if they want to live and leave, must fight of evil, or serve the lord as an undead puppet. they find the descendant of old friends (although most of the inhabitants suffer a degree of madness [used 3rd edition "heroes of horror" book] and some sort of taint/curse) and understand that they seem to be 300 years later in time! They defend the town from undead incursion, investigate on the cleric and the cemetery, push of Ogres that feast on Barovia's childrens, etc. They eventually find that the dark mage they killed wasn't dead, and is now a better necromancer who wishes to become a lich. after the climatic fight, they understand, in his papers, that he helped Strahd become a magician, but also  helped him do a pact with an entity that took over/cursed/feeds off the land of Barovia in exchange for Strahd's eternity and the Charisma/power to possess Tatiana (sorry duderinos : she killed herself and this entity feeds on everyone's sadness, even yours! So eversince she died, a women always gets born, looking a lot like Tatiana [again : this is F***ING Barovia : it's torturing everyone, not just the players! This explains why Strahd get's mader and mader every century])

level 6-7 : Rediscovering the cursed land

Players, based on the necromancer's documents, start cuting the lord's connection to the land (used 3rd edition Ravenloft book). They fight off witches, deamons, lycanthropes, etc. that guards evil wards linked to the lord and it's land. With each ward removed, the land is less dangerous, less dark, etc., making it possible to actually consider attacking/investigating...

level 8-9 : Castle Ravenloft

The castle is now accessible, yet it's a ever morphing structure that fallows no logic. This part is divided into different incursions, visiting sections after section of the castle, cleansing it from the lords' lieutenant. Each incursion ends witha "boss battle", a ward-entity that, once killed, allows access to another part of the castle and stabilise the section the players just did (stopping it's chaos from changing it again for the next inursion).

level 10-11 : The undercastle's demonic link [out o the abyss like...]

This part, the player's will fight their way to the final battle (or is it) with strahd, while organizing Barovia's resistance against the lord's army of darkness. They then discover the demonic link/rift that the dark entity created with Barovia (linking the material, the abyss and the shadowfell world into one horrible, land wide portal that took over 300 years to stabilise and would have open if the land's wards haven't been broken). They then need to investigate this entity [ORCUS MATHA-FACKA]...

Note : the more they level up, the more the entity gets nervous about them, the more the fog is present in the land, altering the fights, the nights, etc.

lots of grey lines in here... cause I don't even know if any of you guys are even interested in reading this so I won't take too much of your time and stop writting the general ideas (bu this thing is going too level 15 "in my book", first taking the players to the shadowfell and eventually to the Abyss itself :p]

peace out!

I'm doing an origin story for the Demiplane of Dread over my current and next campaigns - the end of my current campaign is the fall of Strahd in Mystara and his consumption by the Mists, while the sequel campaign is a Spelljammer game built on two of the characters from the Mystara game joining some new companions and being present for the fall of various iconic evils to keep the Mists from devouring whole worlds as they hunger for potential domain lords.

I wouldn't expect a full campaign setting for Ravenloft, but I hope WOTC does do a Princes of the Apocalypse style revamp/update to I6 Ravenloft and S1 The Tomb of Horrors for 5e eventually.
