Its not in the product catalogue anymore. I'm not talking about the board game but the stand alone RPG that was going to come out later this year. What's the deal?

The catalog only goes up to June. I believe Ravenloft is a fall or winter release.

Yes, I believe they said before that the Ravenloft RPG / Campaign Setting would be out 3rd or 4th quarter 2011.

I don't remember it ever being in the product catalog.

The RPG is supposed to be out at that time. Is the board game been released yet, or is it upcoming?

The Ravenloft board game came out sometime late last year... around September I think.

Well, that was the plan.  The devs wanted to go check it out to make sure they got the locations right, and wound up getting caught in the mists.  Until they design a way to plane shift out, they and the game will remain trapped.

Well personally im kind of hoping they have killed it off completely and are working on something else instead. I loved the original Ravenloft scenario from the 80's but really dislike all the versions of the campaign setting that have been released since.

Um, no. Ravenloft rocks. The 2e Ravenloft boxed set and 3e Ravenloft campaign setting released by Sword and Sorcery rocked. I will be pretty pissed if they killed work on the Ravenloft campaign setting (or if they fubar the setting, and make it largely incompatible with the rest of 4e much the way Gamma World is largely incompatible).

Well the world would be boring if we all agree so i guess we will have to agree to disagree. Sorry its just not for me. Now Spelljammer - now that could be great using 4ed rules !

Not everybody likes forgotten realms.  But a lot of people do, so I wasn't mad at WotC for releasing it.  I just didn't buy the campaign setting.  Not every book has to cater to every player.

What books should do, however, is cater to the people who actually want them.  WotC made a mistake when they introduced a lot of drastic and rather arbitrary changes to the realms in 4e.  I'm all for advancing the plot lines of various settings, but they did it in a way that really alienated realms fans.

If Ravenloft is still in development (and the release schedule doesn't go so far out that we know one way or the other), it should be designed for the people who like Ravenloft.  If it turns out to be something completely different (say, a monster mash game where everyone plays werewolves and vampires, with rules as incompatible with regular 4e as Gamma World is), then the people who don't like Ravenloft will continue to dislike it, while those who do will be put off, leaving a drastically reduced potential audience.

Compatibility...

From what was said at GenCon, the setting will be released as it's own product (Instead of an extention of the D&D brand) but will be largly compatible to the 4th edition rules. There will be addition aspects of it, however, and cards were mentioned that would be a side mechanic for the setting.

I have to completely agree with Cyber-Dave when it comes to Ravenloft...  1000% if that were possible...

However, like Dargurd, I would also love to see Spelljammer make a return in some way shape or form.  Now, in 4th edition, each of the different campaign settings seem to actually be seperate realities (or dimensions or alternate realities... whatever you want to call them), and I personally quite prefer that to the old way of thinking about the campaign settings. It means that each one can be as different or similar as the designers like while still being contained within the same multiverse.

And I could be mistaken, but I think I remember them mentioning somewhere that each "world's" version of the Astral Sea and Elemental Chaos connect together (like at their edges/borders or something like that.)  So to me it seems that a 4th edition iteration of Spelljammer would actually be "reality/dimension travel" by way of either traveling through the Astral Sea or Elemental Chaos or by some new method they'd have to create specifically for Spelljammer (like finding "wormholes" in the Astral or Elemental.)

I think that could be pretty awesome... The "setting" would basically include the following:

1. The old traveling-around-in-a-spelljammer aspect of the old 2nd edition books.
2. Having to deal with Astral Pirates (like the Githyanki), demon marauders in Chaos Ships (such as Orcus' fleet), incursions from the Far Realm (since the Far Realm is "Outside" of all of the universes / exists in-between the universes), and the like.
3. Travel between the different campaign settings and/or alternate realities by way of "wormholes" or "warp gates" or something similar.
4. Travel between the Dominions of the various deities and between famous locations in the Elemental Chaos (like the City of Brass.)

I know that I would to play in that "setting", and this how I already treat travel between the "worlds" in the campaigns that I DM (when not simply using Sigil as a middle-man) and my players quite like it.

Just thought of something to add...

They could also have "maps" of the "wormhole lanes".  And that would allow them to keep something that existed in the old 2nd edition Spelljammer, which is that you could only get to certain worlds/setting from certain worlds/settings... such as you could travel from Krynn to Toril, from Toril to Oerth, and from Oerth to Krynn, but you couldn't travel from Krynn to Oerth.

I'm not sure I'd want them to keep it quite that "set in stone", but they could still have skill challenges or maps for finding your way from one world to another by finding the correct "wormhole" or "warp gate".

I have a confession to make and that is i never got to play or DM Spelljammer in my 30 years of gaming. I used to own it all and i always yearned to DM it but never got the chance. When 4ed came out i realised it would make a great rules system for Spelljammer. I also really like campaign settings that are completely different and Spelljammer most definately is !

Well, I am REALLY hoping to see Ravenloft return this year, but I would also be happy with a new version of Spelljammer soon.  Both have some fond memories attached to them.  I do have a little apprehension about the new vampire character class in Heroes of Shadow, and how it will impact Ravenloft... a setting where brave people stand up for what's right even though everything is stacked against them.  In my opinion letting the player's run "monster" PCs would take away a lot of that.  I know it was done in 2nd ed. with the Requiem box set, but the stricter alignment rules made the use of undead characters more managable... now that I think about it, having a more solid alignment system with actual in-game impact works better for Ravenloft.  I would hate to see it turned into another Vampire:the whatever-the-tagline-is-this-year (not that that's a bad game, but it has enough clones in the gamer-verse).

Man, until I started responding to the Ravenloft vs. Spelljammer posts I didn't realize I had so many apprehensions about this edition of the setting... Foot in mouth

So I've said this a few times, but I really hope WotC gets Ravenloft back in gear for 2012. I love Ravenloft is pretty much all its forms and I would REALLY love to see it come back (I'm wanting more of the 2nd Ed version for 4th Ed.)

Also, as a side note, I think it would be a nice run to do Spelljammer but as a series of articles on DDI. LEt it be a "new" Campaign setting exclusive to the online world... Anyway, now I'm just rambling...

I doubt we will hear anything about it until GenCon in August, if even then.  Last thing we heard is that it has been shelved indefinitely.  The vampire was initially going to appear in the Ravenloft game, but now it is in the Heroes of Shadow supplement.  Much of the description of a class in Heroes of Feywild has indicated that the werewolf or a lycanthrope class will be appearing there.  Both of those are strong indicators that the Ravenloft game has been shelved permanently and its existing components moved to other, likely better selling products.

So, I would wait until GenCon to ask again, as this is where major announcements typically occur.  If it doesn't come up then, I would pretty much assume that the Ravenloft game is dead.

This isn't the first time that they've announced a release, and then have backed out, or not gone through with it.  This makes me re-think my subscription.  I was really looking forward to this.

I realize that its not for everyone, but a lot of us were looking forward to it. I was really disappointed to here it was shelved. I have hopes that they will reevaluate the decision and put it up as the next campaign setting. I don't care about playing (horror styled) monsters but I really like the idea of playing in Ravenloft again.

My personal understanding is that the Ravenloft rumors were just tied to this Shadowfell boxed set we're getting. I wouldn't expect anything closer to Ravenloft than that from WotC, not in the near future.

The Neverwinter Campaign Setting is this years campaign setting.  Disappointing yes, but hopefully there will a more comprehensive campaign setting next year.  I guess we will have to wait until GenCon to find out.

I wouldn't bet on that.

Did you know that WOTC had owned the Dragonlance.com rights for years,  and that just suddenly the website is no longer accessible and the site isn't able to obtain the rights to the name?

It's interesting,  if WOTC isn't planning on supporting it,  why not release the name?  Why just suddenly disconnect it?

Sure,  they could just be holding it to keep their copyright,  but if you're paying for it,  why not let someone else continue to keep a website there so you can gauge traffic and thusly interest?

WOTC's up to something.  I'm very strongly of the opinion that there's a big announcement impending.

The million dollar question is what though,  I personally expect it to be unexpected.  I just keep coming across more and more little bits pointing to big changes.

Because hosting the page cost them some small amount of money and it wasn't generating any for them?

.....Keep the copyright? O.o Unless Dragonlance is older than Steamboat Willy WotC doesn't need to do anything to keep whatever copyright they have in Dragonlance.  And if it is older than Steamboat Willy then what they need to do is lobby Congress for a 20 year term extension not hold on to a web site address.

Now for a trademark, holding on to the web site can prevent their ownership of Dragnlance from being diluted thereby keeping the trademark strong. Also prevents them from having to pay off cyber squatters should they ever decide they want the address again.

Yeah, I wouldn't take that as a sign of anything.  Like Ranadiel said, it just means they didn't want to shell out the money to keep the domain up.  The owner of the Dragonlance forums knows the exact date the domain expires and it isn't until next year if I remember right.

WotC will never release the rights to anything they own.  Someone would have to purchase those rights, and most people don't have that buying power.  WotC still releases the occasional Dragonlance novel (not any new ones, but omnibus editions of several novels) so they will never be in danger of losing the IP, which as Ranadiel says, is unlikely in the first place.

At the start of 4E, WotC hinted at the idea of Dragonlance in 2012, but that was a different time, different economic climate, and different team of developers and team leaders.  Considering we are getting the Neverwinter Campaign Setting this year, I wouldn't expect them to do anything Dragonlance any time soon.  And this is from the guy that has been a big cheerleader for 4E DL (look up the 2010 Dragonlance threads if you feel so inclined).  If they do anything Dragonlance, it would probably be in Dragon and Dungeon.  I pitched the idea of campaign setting months to WotC a little while ago, so hopefully they decided to go with that.  I think an entire issue of Dragon and Dungeon per campaign setting would be pretty cool.

Not sure if we are voting or not, but put me down for another vote FOR Ravenloft. I would love to see this come back. I played 2ed Ed but it was never my favorite system. Ravenloft was by far the most fun I had playing it.

I would imagine there's a market for MV/Gloomwrought style box set of adventure+creature+setting+tokens for at least one Domain of Dread though?  With some addition, like the Gloomwrought Despair Cards - maybe a Ravenloft themed taroc deck or something.
