| #1KoboldAvengerOct 07, 2008 10:46:59 | Well we know that for Arcane there's going to be the Bard (leader), Sorcerer (controller #2) and Artificer (leader #2). For Divine we don't know as much, as those classes (most likely 2 more) are going to be new ones never seen before in the game. And we have not much to go by beyond speculation (possibly the Inquisitor and Theurge) So what's your speculation on those upcoming classes? How do you think the Artificer might be changed from it's playtest? If there's a Divine Controller and Striker, what do you think they'll do? Somehow I feel there needs to be a class that uses old cleric spells like Slay Living, Destruction, Implosion and Storm of Vengeance. |
| #2greymanOct 10, 2008 2:52:49 | The Divine Controller, let's call it a Magi, would have prayers that bring forth miracles. I'm talking old style miracles here: earthquakes, lightning strikes, and ... well, you know, good old fashioned wrath of god stuff. That is, lots of fire, thunder, and radiant prayers, with a definite controller lean. However, her powers will tend to be a just a little more leaderly than the wizard's, with effects that provide a little aid to allies as well as striking down enemies. Both Divine classes so far have been just a little bit better at healing than the martial or arcane competitors, through both powers and features (ie Healer's Lore and Lay on Hands). The magi will possibly have a prayer book, allowing her to swap out daily attack and utility prayers, as well as for storing those rituals. However, a distinguishing feature might be that instead of cantrips (or orisons), she has a form of Channel Divinity, something that seems a signature for the divine power source. The implement might be either Staff or a Holy Symbol. |
| #3Omni-WyvernilOct 10, 2008 3:15:59 | Seems just about right flavor-wise for a Theurge class (Divine Controller). Their zone attacks might also include plagues of locusts and other 'smiting' powers. They may even have some summoning powers, as well. Though I wonder what the Sorcerer will get instead of a spellbook, since spell books don't fit the flavor of a sorcerer at all. Maybe they'll have some sort of "Spell Versatility" class feature that lets them 'burn' a power of a specific type (daily, utility, or encounter) in order to use another one they know of equal or lower level - even if they've already used it. This might help to recapture the old 3rd edition sorcerer's flavor of 'less versatile casting, but able to use the ones they know more often'. |
| #4Steely_DanOct 10, 2008 4:13:32 | We know about all the Arcane classes (artificer, bard, sorcerer, swordmage, warlock, wizard), as far as Divine, I'm thinking: -Theurge = Controller -Inquisitor or Invoker = Striker |
| #5karldark_dupOct 10, 2008 5:19:15 | I see the Divine striker being geared toward retribution. Hurting things that hurt you or your allies during the previous turn. He's little bit of healing might come from reducing enemies to 0 hp. We will be similar to the cleric in having a good smattering of melee and ranged attacks. He might lack the ability to channel divinity but instead have a Zealot like class feature that bolsters him against enemies of a certain type based on deity of worship. Cha, Str, and Wis will be his main stats I suspect the Sorcerer won't have the same versatility as the wizard but instead may be able to bring back an encounter power. He will also have a metamagic feel to him something to augment his powers based on a chosen implement. Be it better damage, penalties to saves or attacks or even expanding blasts and bursts; or they might be able to channel their arcane energies like a barbarian channels his rage. Giving up encounter or daily powers to improve other powers. He could also specialize in a type of power: ray or missile (ranged single target), cone (blast; ranged or close), or area (close or ranged). Cha, Int and Con will be his main stats I hope the Divine Controller is the Archivist. |
| #6Steely_DanOct 10, 2008 5:32:01 | I suspect the Sorcerer won't have the same versatility as the wizard but instead may be able to bring back an encounter power. The designers stated the Sorcerer will have a Wild Magic feel. |
| #7blowfishOct 10, 2008 8:12:41 | Since Paladin is a defender with some minor leader abilities, the divine controller and striker will have some too. My thinking is the controller will have some type of healing aura once per day to go with the AoE attacks controllers like to use. The striker might have something more like the paladin, but since strikers are a bit more selfish perhaps it can only be used on themselves. Just my thoughts on the unknown future. |
| #8karldark_dupOct 10, 2008 12:11:52 | The designers stated the Sorcerer will have a Wild Magic feel. That was a fairly useless post. I'm certain what i said was well within the realm of "Wild Magic." Perhaps reading the full post next time, as well as comprehending it might do you some good. |
| #9tiwaztyrsfistOct 10, 2008 14:19:44 | I'm certain what i said was well within the realm of "Wild Magic." The implication given is that the sorcerer's powers will be like the Wild Magic system from previous editions. In as much, regaining used spells is NOT part of wild magic. Rather, wild magic is about getting a variable damage bonus, which in the past was basically a +3 to -3 effect, and about getting additional random effects. A 10th level fireball did 10d6 damage. A 10th level Wild Magic fireball did 7d6 to 13d6 damage, and had some secondary effect, ranging from blindness, to 1d6 healing, to putting "Light" on all the effected targets, to dealing Cold damage instead of Fire. That's Old school wild magic, and that's the feel Sorcerer is apparently going to have. Artificer - I expect artificer to change a bit from the Playtest article, but not profoundly. Some powers will probably be different. I fully expect to see at-least one Healing Infusion feat. Or perhaps an alternate power from the other class path. But it seems to me there should be a healing infusion power that grants a Saving Throw. Bards - I expect them to be spoony. No wait. Sorry. Um, I expect a lot of Aura like abilities based around their Bardic Music. I expect Bards to be Similar to previous editions (much to the annoyance of a vocal minority) and have most of their spells require song or oratory to use. Based on Barbarian playtest, I kind of now expect the Bards Dailies to be SONGS (with a new Song keyword) which last until the end of encounter or until the bard starts a new Song, or is knocked unconscious. I expect these songs to have group buff powers. I expect my players to constantly make references to Elan's songs in OotS while playing them. Divine Speculation I expect both new Divine classes to have Channel Divinity, each with unique powers. Divine Controller - I personally Like Theurge as a name, I hope that's accurate. I figure the Controllers Channel Divinity will be two powers. One is a weak AOE heal. The other will probably be Turn Undead, just like the Clerics. I hope to see Flame Strike return (7d6 Radiant and Fire Damage). I hope to see some of the other holy attack spells return. Divine Striker - On one hand Inquisitor is a good name, but on the other, it makes it hard not to turn the class into a Monty Python reference. Class Feature: Our Chief Weapon is Surprise: you have combat advantage against any creature that has not acted yet this encounter. No, but more seriously, Again I expect Channel divinity, with 2 powers. One should be a single target radiant damage ability. Like CD: Smite - 1[W] + 1d6 + Wis Radiant Damage. With the 1d6 increasing with level. The other should be a self heal. CD: Righteous Fury - Roll an attack of some sort, and if it hits, spend a healing surge. You gain healing surge + 1d6 hp, and the target takes that much Radiant damage. Or something like that. Also, I expect, as a striker, it will have a Damage add ability like Sneak attack or Warlocks Curse. |
| #10captainswiftOct 10, 2008 14:53:56 | Divine Striker - On one hand Inquisitor is a good name, but on the other, it makes it hard not to turn the class into a Monty Python reference. Yeah, but if the joke is built right in, it makes my job so much easier. |

Perhaps reading the full post next time, as well as comprehending it might do you some good. Not every comment is an attack, no need to get a bit nasty. People misread things, just as people may restate something to confirm what you talk about. |

Hey, I think "songs" with a mechanic similar to rages sound pretty cool! Still not sure about the singing as prerequisite for bards, though. The Inspiring Aura-type thing might work just as well. Speaking of non-troubadour bards, that reminds me of an example from a while back someone posted. The bard says to his/her party: "Hang on, guys. Just let me paint a magical picture of a bridge and we'll be across that chasm in no time!" ![]() Divine Speculation I like "Theurge" as well. On the Channel Divinity uses, those seem too carbon copy of the cleric, don't you think?? While "spellcastery" or "cloistered clerics" are a popular staple, I would think that having an entirely separate base class is going to result in losing certain Cleric class perks. For Flame Strike, would something like Purifying Fire (Daily * Clr Atk 15) minus healing but plus Radiant keyword work? Divine Striker - On one hand Inquisitor is a good name, but on the other, it makes it hard not to turn the class into a Monty Python reference. I like the Inquisitor name to some extent, but my problem with it is that an Inquisitor doesn't at all conjure visions of some type of Divine Striker. Well, unless maybe they have powers that bind the opponent and then they move in to whip them with a high damage attack. Still, that could come off as rather narrow and literal. My main reservation is that the idea of an inquisitor in general doesn't sound very heroic! Inspector, Inquirer (ha!), Investigator, or Infiltrator sound a little closer to the mark.As for Invoker, with Primal powers being named Evocations it might be too similar to that. Or maybe the subtle difference will be key to differentiating the power sources. Who knows? |

I was talking about having the Divine Controller's Channel Divinity = healing and turn undead, which is what it looks like was suggested. That, I feel, is a bit too similar to the Cleric. ![]() Clerics have Channel Divinity: Divine Favor and Turn Undead (+ ability Healing Word). Paladins have Channel Divinity: Divine Strength and Divine Mettle (+ ability Lay On Hands). IMHO, giving the the Controller class Channel Divinity: Healing and Turn Undead would be unlikely and undesirable. But perhaps I misread the suggestion. |

My main reservation is that the idea of an inquisitor in general doesn't sound very heroic! Generally my first idea for a Divine Striker would have been Hashishin/Holy Slayer, but there's no classes in the PHB that begin with H. The general rule is that striker classes don't tend to sound like nice people. Inquisitor is good fit, because it certainly sounds like something divine, and there was a prestige class with that name. Generally what comes to my mind with Inquisitor are witch-hunting stake-burning inquisitors which while they aren't that heroic sounding, they certainly fit in warlocks. |

| #17the_badger_02Oct 12, 2008 15:05:27 | While I don't tend to think of Strikerish hurting people when I hear Inquisitor, I do think of their tendency of torture. This tendency makes me think of hurting someone a lot all in the name of a god. Which I think fits a Divine Striker rather effectively. |
| #18ultimatecaliburOct 12, 2008 16:34:28 | I kind of expect the Inquisitor, if that is what we get, to use Light Blades and Flails primarily and also have two builds, a laser build and a weapon build. |
| #19Ragnar_LodbrokOct 12, 2008 17:26:13 | I kind of expect the Inquisitor, if that is what we get, to use Light Blades and Flails primarily and also have two builds, a laser build and a weapon build. That makes sense, primarily because a scourge is a flail, and it's a traditional torture weapon. Spanish Inquisition torturer builds, here we come:evillaugh ! |
| #20ultimatecaliburOct 12, 2008 20:25:05 | I was more thinking along the line of the whip wielding Belmont clan. |

Perhaps reading the full post next time, as well as comprehending it might do you some good. My, my, aren't we fierce...relax, Francis… And it was actually a lovely, useful little post for people who didn't want to dredge through your droning, run-on sentence of a post. Oh, and you're also not good at this, but we know what you were trying to do. |
| #22Kobold_AvengerOct 13, 2008 14:54:16 | For the first line of an Inquistor class description it needs to have: Burn the Heretic! Kill the Mutant!! Purge the Unclean! Or... Nobody expectes the Inquistion!! |
| #23johnthedm7000Oct 16, 2008 22:24:01 | Assuming that the Theurge or Thaumaturge is a divine controller what would you people say to it eating the Archivist and having something reminiscent of the Dark Knowledge class feature? Perhaps using the character's knowledge of what lurks in the dark to restrict (or to a limited degree, control) their actions? |
| #24rechanOct 19, 2008 18:28:53 | I think it's wholly possible that the Inquisitor is the controller. When I hear "Inquisitor", I don't really see some guy running around the battlefield hitting people. I see someone with an indomitable will, effecting others with his demands. |
| #25Omni-WyvernilOct 20, 2008 1:10:00 | I think it's wholly possible that the Inquisitor is the controller. "Theurge" or "Thaumaturge" doesn't really sound like a Striker, though. It's possible that one of the new divine classes is a second Leader, though. Or the other divine Striker class is actually a "Witch-Hunter", and the last primal class is the Totemist. |
| #26DuskweaverOct 20, 2008 2:41:11 | Or the other divine Striker class is actually a "Witch-Hunter" I suggested that a while back and was told that WotC has stated there won't be any classes with two-word or hyphenated names. Doesn't rule out "witchfinder", though. But I'm currently leaning towards the "W" class being "wildshaper", the primal defender ("warden" sounds too mundane to be anything other than a martial class, IMO). So this is what I expect the three unconfirmed classes to be: Inquisitor (or "invoker", but that sounds primal now) - divine striker (more like a flagellant than a true "inquisitor" in feel - specialising in flails and scourges and with bonuses against demons, devils and undead) Theurge - divine controller (wizard is damage + control equally; sorcerer will be mostly damage and a little control; theurge will probably be mostly control and little damage) Wildshaper - primal defender (taking the defender/striker aspects of the druid since she's now a controller; he's the big hairy bloke who morphs into a bear and rips your head off, while the druid's the slender elf-maid at the back summoning roots from the ground to immobilise you and playing havoc with the weather to bring down your flying allies) |
| #27paideiaOct 20, 2008 13:43:24 | Or the other divine Striker class is actually a "Witch-Hunter" Actually that sounds more like a Paragon Path to me. Specialized in dealing with dark magic and demons. |
| #28marius4Oct 20, 2008 13:52:44 | Do you suppose the Divine Controller will make for mechanically playable pacifist characters? I doubt its attack powers will do no damage, but they may provide a respectable number of interesting options. Also, do you suppose the Divine Controller will make the arcane abjurer irrelevant? Perhaps recreating a 3e abjurer will be done best by filing off the "divine" from this class. |
| #29Omni-WyvernilOct 20, 2008 21:14:12 | I suggested that a while back and was told that WotC has stated there won't be any classes with two-word or hyphenated names. Doesn't rule out "witchfinder", though. I agree with this, more or less. Inquisitors will probably have the flavor of 'divine monster hunters', who are tasked with hunting down and slaying threats to their church (including undead, demons, devils, evil wizards, and corrupted members of their own faith). Maybe their 'extra damage' ability deals increased damage (similar to a rogue's sneak attack) against aforementioned evil foes. Their channel divinity feats may include alternate types of 'enemies of the faith' that they can smite (like evil dragons for an inquisitor of Bahamut or giants/primordials for a inquisitor of Moradin). Theurges may incorporate aspects of the favored soul, archivist, and cloistered cleric to fill the "unarmored, smiting prophet" type of priest. They'll probably be able to use staffs and holy symbols as implements, and may serve as secondary leaders with some minor healing abilities. While Wardens/Wildshapers and Druids may both have shapeshifting abilities, the Warden will probably focus on a single combat form, while Druids have several more limited ones. Wardens may also get 'partial shapeshift' abilities for when they aren't transformed, such as spontaneously growing claws and swiping at enemies, or growing poison fangs and biting them. |
