Uh, it's been in 4E since the first PHB came out. What are you talking about?

The OP is referring to a chain shirt AC 5, -1 check penalty from 3.5 and earlier editions. It was considered light armor. I'd like to see it as well. I'll bet they have something like it in the next adventure vault.

I never really understood why the chain shirt was different from chainmail.

OP: Is the reason you want it back because it was interesting, or because it was one of the best armors in 3.5E?

Many people have suggested this rule for chain shirt:

AC as Hide, Enchantments like Chainmail.

I don't know how much cheese there is in letting Hide get Chain enchantments rather than Hide ones.

Just put on whatever light armor you want and call and describe it as a chain shirt.

QFT.

IMO, nobody who isn't a member of a primal class or one of a very small subset of 'feral' races has any business wearing actual hide armour. For everyone else, 'hide armour' covers any light armour that's more protective than plain old leather. That would include chain shirts (as well as lamellar, studded leather, brigandine and a whole load of other possibilities).

nah, wasnt the best, just great armor for a rogue that ends up seeing abit to much combat after their riuge ran out.

that and rangers could wear it without loosing ranger abiltiies then.

it wasnt the cooolest, nor the worst, just an option

Well, the only "basic" armours worth wearing were Chain Shirt, Breastplate, and Full Plate, IIRC. But in principle, I agree with you.
