Rules changes from Compendium?

I never planned on buying the Rules Compendium.  I know the rules, even with the errata, and I don't need another book that reprints it all.

However, people who did buy the book (at my FLGS) have begun to tell me about changes between it and the core rulebooks.  Monster knowledge checks, for one, are something I haven't seen mentioned in any online article or newspost.  They did mention the change to the easy-medium-hard skill DCs, but they didn't print out the new table in the Essentials update.

So, those who have the book: What else is new?  I'd like to know if there's enough new content or stealth revisions that I'll want to buy the book for myself.

Speaking of which... what about the DM's kit?  I certainly don't need the tokens, DM's screen, maps, or adventures, so how much of the rest (the rules and monster books) are "required" to play 4eE?

There's about six million threads on the topic.  You can find them in any forum.

The new skill DC table was previewed: www.wizards.com/dnd/article.aspx?x=dnd/d...

Some of the 'new content' is actually just expanded explanations of how certain things work, and a good deal of this is condensed from the relevant articles in DDI or DMG2/etc.

There is some new stuff in it - I suspect that when the next CB Update rolls around, they'll release an errata document to reflect those changes.

For example, readying an action that provokes, will provoke at the time of readying in addition to at the time of triggering.

Very useful, if incomplete, thank you.  I just wish WotC would do this kind of thing for us--we shouldn't have to proofread to get this kind of info.

Don't hold your breath. All WotC cares about is your dollar.

That's not ALL they care about (the Dev's, not the CEO), but yes, they need money to continue making stuff.

Of course they do.  They're a business.  They have to make a business decision here:
  1. Force everyone to buy the RC and scour it for changes.  This alienates the customer base, which is already really alienated--I'm seriously wondering whether D&D will survive until 5e at this rate.  It might increase sales of RC, for everyone who wants to keep up with the current official rules, but it will also impact future sales badly.

  2. List all the changes, as they did with HoFL already.  They might sell fewer copies of RC, but this will probably boost sales of future 4e products.

  3. List where the changes can be found in RC, but not what they are.  This is a compromise option: players still need to buy the book to get the current rules, but they don't have to go over every page with a fine-toothed comb trying to figure out what changed.

Well as I said in a different thread, give page #'s for the DMG for pages that are still viable rules. They want us to think the rules are compatible, but are willing to change anything to meet their new direction going forward.

Example in the treasure section all they needed was a sentence that said; If you don't like rolling treasure, look for the parcel rules in the DMG page #..... Is that to much to ask?

Well today is your lucky day then!  Release a better game, market it, and make a fortune!
Seriously...I see these threads in all manner of products I follow.  "The company won't last to the next release...well then the NEXT release...I meant the NEXT(!!) release."

If you say it every time, eventually you will be right because nothing lasts forever, but 4E seems to be selling quite well, including these Compendiums which I had to make multiple stops to find (sold out in places, day of release).

Now it COULD be that you are not only an expert game designer, but also a marketing wizard with the business acumen to publish a gaming empire.  If so, then by all means do so and I will play your game. If not, sorry, but they don't make the game to your (or my) whims.  Either buy the products and use them, or don't.  House rule that you are not using that stuff.  Play 3.5 (or freaking Chainmail and Eldritch Wizardry for that matter!). But there are plenty of people who like aspects of the Essential products, and were quite happy to take advantage of them.

Now, if t hey would only release an e-reader version ...and patch it for eratta!

I will just have to apologize on that note.  I meant to quote Mindwanderer in the post above yours and made a mistake.

Sorry about that.
