| #1SeakogAug 04, 2009 12:25:42 | According to the githzerai entry, they favor avenger, monk, ranger and SEEKER class.... You may begin speculation. |
| #2sigil_beguilerAug 04, 2009 12:29:11 | *Jumps up with first proposition for what the Seeker is* The Seeker is a Psionic class oriented around using Clairvoyance, Precognition, Scrying, etc. It uses these abilities to seek, or hunt down specific people. Predicting their actions, and knowing where they will head, etc. Time to see how very wrong I am :P |
| #3ranadielAug 04, 2009 12:31:29 | My first thought when I read the name was that it is a divine class. Although I could certainly see it as a psionic class as well. |
| #4Silver_BlazeAug 04, 2009 12:33:51 | Dragonlance had Seekers. They were false clerics. I doubt that is what they are here. |
| #5burningroseAug 04, 2009 12:35:32 | According to the githzerai entry, they favor avenger, monk, ranger and SEEKER class.... Sounds like a Divine class to me. But then, if it's Psionic, it's probably the defender. Empath seems to be the name-of-choice for leader... |
| #6sigil_beguilerAug 04, 2009 12:38:14 | But then, if it's Psionic, it's probably the defender. Empath seems to be the name-of-choice for leader... OOOO, if it is a Defender and going of a old Psionic Defender idea of mine + the name + my first OP about what I think the Seeker is. The Psionic Defender if that somehow is all true can predict the actions of enemies, managing to stop their attacks before they even strike, or move allies out of the way, etc. |
| #7ranadielAug 04, 2009 12:41:19 | I just had a revelation. I bet you that the seeker class is dedicated to the idea of searching for enlightenment. Unfortunatly, this doesn't give too much info on it since I could reasonably see either a divine or psionic class based on that idea. |
| #8MarandahirAug 04, 2009 12:46:43 | My immediate thought was a Divine Exorcist class who hunts down spirits and uses a bow and maybe seals as well. Kind of like a Shinto Priest or something. Dex/Wis and Con/Wis (for all that sealing stuff). |
| #9Silver_BlazeAug 04, 2009 12:55:40 | I guess I misrepresented the DL Seeker. They are searching for the gods, both new and old. If the Seeker is based on that, the class could be useful in a number of campaign settings. |
| #10CyvarisAug 04, 2009 12:56:13 | I put my vote done on a primal stalker class, hey one of us has to be diffrent. The seek out their prey, dex prim, with wis secondary. |
| #11ekioAug 04, 2009 12:56:21 | I'll bet you that it was originally the Ki leader. |
| #12jr665Aug 04, 2009 13:01:11 | "they favor avenger, monk, ranger" Just mentioning that they are all Striker classes. Might mean Seeker is also Striker, but it might not too. |
| #13HebitsuikazaAug 04, 2009 13:03:11 | I think it is a class that rides around on a broomstick and tries to catch the golden snitch during a game that otherwise resemble soccer (football for everyone outside of America) on broomsticks. If they catch the snitch, their team gets 10 million points-- rendering the entire rest of the game absolutely pointless. |
| #14ekioAug 04, 2009 13:04:50 | I think it is a class that rides around on a broomstick and tries to catch the golden snitch during a game that otherwise resemble soccer (football for everyone outside of America) on broomsticks. | #15burningroseAug 04, 2009 13:20:24 | "they favor avenger, monk, ranger" They're also all classes with Dex/Wis bonuses... My immediate thought was a Divine Exorcist class who hunts down spirits and uses a bow and maybe seals as well. Kind of like a Shinto Priest or something. Dex/Wis and Con/Wis (for all that sealing stuff). In reality, the shinto priest archetypal archer is a primal thing, not divine. It may have been a religion in the real world, but it's one of the most heavy inspirations for primal spirits I've seen so far, and doesn't really match the divine flavor. But I could still see it that way. If we look at Ability scores, we have Dex and Wisdom. All of the other classes listed use both, so I would bet that the Seeker does as well, or has some really good synergy in either flavor or mechanic with the Githzerai. Dex would be a favorite of an archer, and Wisdom is used heavily by both Divine and Primal classes. At the same time, We've seen very little of Psionic, but the tendency seems to be toward Intelligence over Wisdom as a main casting stat. Still, it's hard to tell because we've seen so little. So I'd say all bets are off, probably. |
| #16VaelAug 04, 2009 13:27:44 | Seeker, as a name, can easily fit into any of the identified power sources in PH3, I could see it as a Divine, Primal or Psionic class. That said, I'm inclined to lean Psionic, maybe even Psionic Defender. Because there's a sweet feat for Psionic Githzerai, "Iron Resolve of Zerthadlum" that grants a bonus to saves as long as you have a power point, and all the other mentionned favoured classes do not use power points. |
| #17MoleculeAug 04, 2009 14:29:53 | Given that Stephen Schubert said that githzerai will have to come by the primary stat for the other three psionic classes the hard way, I think it is likely that the Seeker is either divine or primal (and just based on the name alone it sounds like a divine class rather than a primal one). |
| #18spirit_golemAug 04, 2009 15:06:02 | It looks like the mention of the seeker class has been removed from the article. |
| #19Silver_BlazeAug 04, 2009 15:08:42 | It looks like the mention of the seeker class has been removed from the article. Just the article, it seems. It is still in place in both the character builder and the compendium. I guess they didn't intend to drop that tidbit of information yet. |
| #20sigil_beguilerAug 04, 2009 15:08:45 | It looks like the mention of the seeker class has been removed from the article. Lol, guess they didn't mean to let that slip just yet. It is annoying they let that slip, but haven't said what next month's preview for PHB3 will be like they did with this month's. |
| #21melosAug 04, 2009 16:12:20 | I heard that Confessor will be another new class. |
| #22ekioAug 04, 2009 16:13:21 | I heard that Confessor will be another new class. Oh? |
| #23BelorinAug 04, 2009 16:17:52 | Will the Seeker carry a Sword of Truth? Bel |
| #24kevrockAug 04, 2009 16:24:29 | The Seeker is a Psionic class oriented around using Clairvoyance, Precognition, Scrying, etc. It uses these abilities to seek, or hunt down specific people. Predicting their actions, and knowing where they will head, etc. Did you use Clairvoyance, Precognition, or Scrying to come to this conclusion? ![]() Has anyone considered that the Seeker maybe a rename of the Empath? |
| #25LFKAug 04, 2009 16:26:26 | Did you use Clairvoyance, Precognition, or Scrying to come to this conclusion? Possibly. I'm personally leaning towards the Psi Leader, which was a favorite for Empath. |
| #26sigil_beguilerAug 04, 2009 16:27:53 | Did you use Clairvoyance, Precognition, or Scrying to come to this conclusion? I wish! *Looks longingly at lottery tickets* It is a possibility, but it is just as likely too that if the Seeker is Psionic for it to be the Psionic Defender and the Empath continues to be the Psionic Leader. |
| #27DragoncatAug 04, 2009 16:33:12 | Generic name is generic. Kind of annoying, because the class names are usually evocative; you know what a barbarian is, or a bard, or a wizard, or a cleric. Seeker is...one who looks for something. Which could mean anything. ![]() |
| #28Black_Knight999Aug 04, 2009 16:48:06 | My theory is that the Seeker class will focus on riding a broomstick and trying to catch a flying gold ball. It will be the most original idea ever. :D |
| #29CyvarisAug 04, 2009 17:20:17 | some one beat you to it btw, but this will be an interesting class none the less. |
| #30celticmuttAug 04, 2009 17:30:04 | I'm going with Seeker is Divine or Primal, probably Divine, too. |
| #31LespAug 04, 2009 18:23:35 | In modern parlance, a "seeker" is someone exploring but not committed to one or more religions, belief systems, faiths, denominations, or styles of devotion. I'd go seven-to-one that it's a divine class. There's a huge mine of psionicy sounding words that are untapped and words for concepts yet un-port-forwarded in psionics. They wouldn't have to resort to "seeker". The term has some divine-feeling traction, but little traction as a psionics compared to the other options for psionic classes. Whatever the new divine class(es) is/are, they're definitionally repeating a source/role combo, so I'd expect them to really go way out to distinguish whatever it is from what's already there both flavorfully and mechanically. The concept of a seeker stands apart from the flavor archetypes embodied by the core description of the existing divine classes. |
| #32burningroseAug 04, 2009 18:37:01 | In modern parlance, a "seeker" is someone exploring but not committed to one or more religions, belief systems, faiths, denominations, or styles of devotion. I'm still also hoping for a Crusader class though >_>... The general feeling seems to be that it's probably a divine, but still might be primal, with a slight chance of rain (Whoops, I mean Psionic). |
| #33DragoncatAug 04, 2009 18:50:08 | You know.... Throwing out something psychotic. PHB3 is the one with hybrid classes, designed to fuse roles together, yes? And the Eternal Seeker is the Multiclass King, the one who gains powers and abilities from other sources of any class, power source, or other epic destinies. What if.... ![]() |
| #34McnancyAug 04, 2009 20:23:33 | I guess I misrepresented the DL Seeker. They are searching for the gods, both new and old. If the Seeker is based on that, the class could be useful in a number of campaign settings I could get behind that. |
| #35dm_lennyAug 04, 2009 20:54:52 | well, maybe this can bring some light to the question (and to the question of the 2010 setting) http://www.amazon.com/Seeker-Dark-Sun-Tribe-Trilogy/dp/1560767014/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1249437016&sr=1-18 seeker is a name from a dark sun novel. I never read it, so maybe dark sun fans could explain more. |
| #36GhostStepperAug 04, 2009 22:19:19 | ![]() Dark Sun class? You decide! |
| #37CaericAug 04, 2009 22:32:36 | I'm hoping that Seeker is a Defender that breaks the old standards people hold so high. As in, defends without using a Mark of any kind. Somehow. I'm not saying it's a reasonable hope. I just would be fascinated in seeing a new way to Defend. I don't mind whether or not it's Psionic. I don't see it as being Primal or Divine though. The Divine already have a "seeker" type; Avenger. Maybe Primal, but in my mind Primal is going to be given the Incarnum classes from 3.5. We'll see. |
| #38NerpherderAug 04, 2009 22:55:32 | My vote is for Primal, I know ita not alot to go by but the named classes are "Avenger (Divine), Monk (Psionic), Ranger (Martial), Seeker (???)" the only power source missing is Primal. Im at a loss for the Role will be, Im going to say Controler/ Striker. We only have 4 controllers as it stands counting the Psion. thats my ![]() -nerp |
| #39GMforPowergamersAug 04, 2009 23:12:03 |
so what is this??? a novel or a supplment? is there a class or a character by that name??? what is the class/character like? can anyone imagin a 4e class built on the concept of this book??? |
| #40burningroseAug 04, 2009 23:13:44 | I'm hoping that Seeker is a Defender that breaks the old standards people hold so high. As in, defends without using a Mark of any kind. Somehow. I'm not saying it's a reasonable hope. I just would be fascinated in seeing a new way to Defend. Well, I highly doubt they'll ever make a 4e defender without some form of mark. It seems to be standard, and I think it would be unlikely that much else would work in the system. The Seeker doesn't necessarily have to be "seeking" his enemies, like an Avenger. If seeking other things, it could easily fit into Divine without stepping on anyone's toes. And in the article, they say that the Githzerai will have to get his primary stat for the non-monk psionic classes the hard way, meaning none of them use Dex/Wis as a main stat. Since the other three listings all use Dex/Wis, I'd say that pretty much utterly rules out Psionic as a possibility. So: Divine or Primal? |
| #41doctorhookAug 04, 2009 23:53:29 | I heard that Confessor will be another new class. I heard that Fatbeard will be yet another new class -- power source neutral, no less! :P |
| #42celticmuttAug 05, 2009 0:02:15 | I heard that Fatbeard will be yet another new class -- power source neutral, no less! :P I was hoping for the Blackbeard class from the Teach power source myself. :P |
| #43KoboldAvengerAug 05, 2009 0:06:18 | Maybe they were thinking of calling a class a Psychic Warrior, but then they decided it was too much of a mouth full. So they went with Psyker, but felt that Psyker didn't sound very good, so they picked they next thing that sounded close to it and picked Seeker. |
| #44GhostStepperAug 05, 2009 0:10:31 | I always called them Psywars in my games. |
| #45GilgigaAug 05, 2009 0:16:39 | I always called them Psywars in my games. Didn't everyone call them "A Freaken Jedi?" pretty sure we did. |
| #46burningroseAug 05, 2009 0:23:23 | Maybe they were thinking of calling a class a Psychic Warrior, but then they decided it was too much of a mouth full. So they went with Psyker, but felt that Psyker didn't sound very good, so they picked they next thing that sounded close to it and picked Seeker. Well, they're almost certainly not going to be a Psionic class, because we know (from the article on Githzerai):
The logical conclusion is that the Seeker will not be Psionic. |
| #47GhostStepperAug 05, 2009 0:28:43 | Didn't everyone call them "A Freaken Jedi?" pretty sure we did. I didnt know any jedi that could become 15' tall, grow claws and whip around a spiked chain made of crystal. Now the soulknife...that screamed jedi. ;) |
| #48alphasquirellAug 05, 2009 0:56:47 | Seeker, as a name, can easily fit into any of the identified power sources in PH3, I could see it as a Divine, Primal or Psionic class. I agree. Of course, if they're going to slip a class, it has to be the one vague enough that there's no hope of guessing the power source, lol. My takes: Divine - Worships the entire pantheon, more about seeking the "true way" or somesuch. (might be a class based on a character who seeks Divinity or godhood, for whatever reason) Psionic - I like sigil_beguiler's summation best so far. I'm not sure how to fill out an entire class like that, but that's my job anyways. :P Primal - Cyvaris mentioned the "primal stalker". Well, in 3.5, the Ranger was a kind of mishmash of TWF/Archery/nature-stalker-guy. Maybe, after redesigning the Ranger as a "combat specialist", they decided to go back and design a class based on everything else that used to fall under the category of "ranger". Animal Companion, appropriate nature spells, archery/maneuverability akin to the 3.5 "Scout" class, where a "Ranger/Seeker" hybrid would be the ultimate 4e reincarnation of the 3.5 Ranger. (most of this is "senseless rambling", but I share it anyways, as every now and then something with insight slips through, lol) |
| #49gregt_314Aug 05, 2009 2:03:54 | I would love it to be Dragonlance-style seekers. Psionic leaders whose psi powers are limited to superhuman charisma and the ability to incite mobs to unreason. I have no idea how that would work mechanically but I'm willing to find out! (Yes, I know Dragonlance seekers weren't psionic. Which highlights the problem with the "Martial" power source encompassing everything that isn't supernatural. They really should have split up the "real world" power sources into a couple of groups rather than just bundling it all into martial.) |
| #50LordDreadmanAug 05, 2009 3:02:36 | Just going to throw in my two cents: Unless Stephen Schubert was lying, the Seeker is supassingly unlikely to be Psionic. (Read his comment on page 6 of Dragon 378 [that's page 2 of the article] and you'll see what I mean.) So, since we can only work with what we are told, I am (personally) dismissing the "Seeker is Psionic" idea. As far as I have ever heard the term used, Seeker has always had a religious underpinning. In the Eberron Campaign Guide (and in previous editions of Eberron, so this might not be a hint at all), followers of the Blood of Vol are called Seekers. In addition, in real world terms, Seekers were a specific religious movement durring the 17th century. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seekers ) Also, as was pointed out above, today seekers are people who have yet to decide on a specific religion. To me, this fits with PH3. Isn't PH3 about options, after all? What could be more full of options than a Divine character who is being solicited by EVERY god (maybe can get god-specific Channel Divinity powers without worshipping, or something along those lines)? To me, this fits. As far as primal goes, you kind of already know my stance. Primal characters don't really seek ... they hunt. I won't be terribly surprised if it IS primal (or, at least, not as surprised as surprised as if it were Psionic), but it just doesn't sound AS primal as it sounds divine. In short, "seek and ye shall find." As far as role, let's think: (Assuming that it is a divine character.) Defenders protect things. A seeker, in this sense anyways, wouldn't really be interested in protecting things. This guy seems like a free spirit with nothing to tie him down, or to tie others down. Controllers ... I don't know. The invoker really sucked all the air out of the room there. There's no real evidence here, but I'm going to go on record saying that it's not a controller anyway. Could it be a striker? I'm going to say no. The argument is similar to the controller argument, but someone who is seeking knowledge doesn't really feel like a killer to me. A character who is undecided on religion in a world filled with evidence of the divine doesn't seem to have the focus that a striker would need. So here is the final one: Leader. Obviously, this is my pick. Why? Because I saved it for last, of course. Someone who is undecided in the religion category (or even purposely staying neutral), would have a deep respect for people of other beliefs. As a result, he would, likely, be adept at helping in several areas of a battle (like leaders do). The kind of guy who does not judge based on religious background could easily be the kind of compassionate leader that we see from the cleric (only, I imagine, it will work quite differently). After all, the wiki entry called them "anti-clerical." :D In addition, I totally jive with the whole "even gods need balance" feel coming from a divine githzarai character. Yup, that's how I see it. I hope you agree. Sincerely, Lord Dreadman |
| #51praionAug 05, 2009 3:22:46 | I think they will be summoning Titans from little amulets and throw spells arround. They are natural enemys of the professor and his organisation... Huntik |
| #52smugmugAug 05, 2009 3:50:31 | I think they will be summoning Titans from little amulets and throw spells arround. They are natural enemys of the professor and his organisation... Now I feel sick... I actually know that series ![]() |
| #53McnancyAug 05, 2009 11:20:06 | Yup, that's how I see it. I hope you agree. I wish to believe as you believe! I also like the Idea of them searching for long lost gods and brand new ones, gods so obscure that the player could even make them up. |
| #54IaleAug 05, 2009 11:57:14 | Gith don't like divine stuff, though, so I'd find it hard to accept that they'd be gearing up to slot into one. Even where their stats may make a good fit, I don't see the fluff supporting it. My vote is a psionic striker. Defender and leader just don't sound like seeker-ish roles, and we already have a controller. Maybe leader, but I'd bet against. |
| #55therealtimAug 05, 2009 12:38:46 | I am agreeing with Divine Leader. If DL is the setting next year, then what has been described as the DL seeker seems like it would make an awesome general class. I see it being some sort of priest/archivist mixture, which would settle peoples clamoring for a cloth divine leader. As for the Gith not liking divine, an archivist style divine character seems like it would work perfectly. They live in monasteries floating in the astral sea. Monasteries scream deep study like an archivist, while astral sea screams divine, I am pretty sure it is made up of said lost and forgot gods. |
| #56the_fanAug 05, 2009 12:58:08 | Gith don't like divine stuff, though, so I'd find it hard to accept that they'd be gearing up to slot into one. Even where their stats may make a good fit, I don't see the fluff supporting it. Well, gith might be against the divine normally, but if it is a divine class that somehow doesn't submit to a god but "seeks" one worthy of following, or seeks the divinity within, or something similar....I could see that. At least for 'Zerai. Githyanki wouldn't be for that at all. |
| #57LordDreadmanAug 05, 2009 14:09:54 | Gith don't like divine stuff, though, so I'd find it hard to accept that they'd be gearing up to slot into one. Yet, their racial entry says, point blank, githzarai make great avengers. I'd say my take on Seekers as Divine Leader (see my entry above) fits the githzarai feel FAR better than Avengers (given that avengers tend to be ... well, fanatics, to put it nicely). Also, once again, people are ignoring what Stephen Schubert said in that article. Githzarai have to come by the main stat in Psionic classes (other than the monk) "the hard way." Since the "member of a race that favors the _____ class" entry is, primarily, based on stats (not merely racial attitude), unless they changed the rules it simply CANNOT be Psionic, given these two "facts." Of course, Mr. Schubert could be lying, but we can't do much to help that right now, can we? I'm putting that in here again in the hopes that people who keep missing it will, eventually, read what other people write before posting. Also, just a quick note: I forgot that the Dex bonus would be a big part of the Seeker. Let's look at this: Dex is not a main stat for ANY Leaders or Defenders in the game thus far (I, personally, see this as a hole, but it might also reflect a game design philosophy). Exactly HALF of the Controllers in the game use Dexterity in some way. Namely, Druids and Wizards (Psions and Invokers do not). TWO-THIRDS of Strikers use Dexterity in some way (only Barbarians and Warlocks don't generally use it). Draw whatever conclusion you like from this. I still feel like a Divine Leader fits the fluff, and it wouldn't stretch my mind too much for the seeker to be a quick moving leader, easily dodging around to flank with the fighter. Maybe there could even be a ranged weapon build. Wow ... I write a lot. Sorry, but I get going and just don't stop. Sincerely, Lord Dreadman |
| #58lady_ishtarAug 05, 2009 14:25:30 | What if the Seeker class is indeed psionic, just not from PHB3? They could be referring to a class from the new setting. While the Gith may not be best suited for 3/4 of the PHB psionic classes nothing says there couldn't be a 5th class in the Campaign Players Guide. |
| #59anubis_reynardAug 05, 2009 14:41:11 | It would be comparable to PH2 saying the Deva makes a good Artificer, which I do not believe to be the case. |
| #60LordDreadmanAug 05, 2009 14:42:57 | That's vanishingly unlikely. WotC usually doesn't reference unpublished books directly from already published books. For instance, the Deva makes a great Artificer, but its entry doesn't mention it at all. Believe me, I'm looking forward to more Psionic goodness too, but I really doubt the Seeker is it. I can't wait to find more Psionic classes, personally. Well. There it is. Sincerely, Lord Dreadman Edit: Ninja'd! Or am I just seconding? Let's say that ... ![]() |
| #61therealtimAug 05, 2009 14:58:38 | I think we already know a good amount about the psionic classes already, we just don't know their official names. I think if seeker was psionic it would be harder to speculate how it operates more then if it were of the other two sources. Also, just a quick note: I forgot that the Dex bonus would be a big part of the Seeker. Let's look at this: I think it will be a divine leader, Wis primary, int/cha secondary. I guess a dex build could work, but I cannot really visualize it. |
| #62ignizAug 05, 2009 16:02:26 | A Psionic Seeker would make a lot of sense, using psionics to seek things... a Psionic Striker by the sounds of it. It sounds a lot like the divining (no divining isn't divine) side of psionics. I'll also point out that Dwarves make Great Fighters dispite boosting no primary stats. |
| #63whytetygerAug 05, 2009 16:28:54 |
In this particular book, the main character pictured was called by many names. The interesting thing was that he had a personality disorder (a fractured mind, if you will). Each personality had the skills, traits, and abilities of a different class..ie Ranger was the ranger, Shadow was the thief, etc. Hence the title of the series....Tribe of One. This class name coming around now, as well as Dark Sun being bantered about as the 2010 campaign setting, and the PHB3 containing the rules for hybrid classes.......hmmmmmmm. Sounds to me like a psionic class, probably in Dark Sun (as the 2010 cs!), that uses it's psionic ability to either "steal" powers, feats, spells, or other such things, away from other characters. Sort of "seeking" so-called perfection". OR Same as above but will be the second class to use multiple multi-classing ![]() |
| #64burningroseAug 05, 2009 16:31:50 | The seeker is not Psionic. I just think that speeds up our discussion of likely things, since we already know that but many are forgetting. |
| #65alphasquirellAug 05, 2009 17:04:18 | The seeker is not Psionic. Quotes. Show support for such claims, or the only justifiable response is a shout of "Shenanigans!". (this isn't the first time I've seen this, but the only other comment like this I've seen didn't show a link/quote either, and people in speculation threads aren't exactly going to go digging out obscure references just because others claim they exist) |
| #66ragecage79Aug 05, 2009 17:10:41 | Quotes in quotes, if you will. Also, once again, people are ignoring what Stephen Schubert said in that article. | #67celticmuttAug 05, 2009 17:56:00 | Yup. Schubert's quote basically confirms that A) the prime stat for the Seeker is neither Dex nor Wis, so B) since the Zerai is a perfect fit (ie Dex/Wis) the Seeker cannot be Psionic. |
| #68LordDreadmanAug 05, 2009 18:19:15 | I'll also point out that Dwarves make Great Fighters dispite boosting no primary stats. I'll be honest. At first I thought I'd been told what for, when I read this, but on closer inspection of the Fighter class it makes perfect sense why they would suggest Dwarves take it. If you are wielding a Hammer, Fighters use BOTH Con and Wis as secondary stats. So that's a good reason with ONLY the stats considered. The racial abilities speak to it as well, but that's beside the point. Also, you'll find that this sort of thing is the exception rather than the rule. Usually, the races denote classes with both a primary stat AND a secondary stat. If you look at the classes in the game at that time, Dwarves didn't really have much to work with, what with pluses to Con and Wis. In other words, if Dex and Wis were difficult to find as primary stats, I would agree with you. However, since Wis is merely a secondary stat for most Psionic classes, this is unlikely. Even the Rogue class boasts a primary stat of Dex, with a need for good Perception checks (and, thus, decent Wisdom). So why would it call attention to a Psionic class that only uses Wisdom as a secondary stat? Unless WotC is just trying to say, "these dudes think Psionics is a-okay" (of course, without a basis in stats), it seems vanishly unlikely. But, you ask, what if Dex AND Wis are secondary stats? I get the feeling that Mr. Schubert would have mentioned that Dex is another secondary stat with some Psionic classes if it were so. I mean, he was TRYING to sell the race to Psionic users at that point. The fact that it was left out suggests otherwise. I understand that these are forums, and people will dispute this until well after PH3 comes out, but I'm, personally, convinced that the Seeker is EXTREMELY unlikely to be Psionic. Well. There it is. Sincerely, Lord Dreadman |
| #69ignizAug 06, 2009 16:51:26 | Dwarves also make Good Paladins, presumably because they help with the MAD? Or because Hammer Using Paladins are really great? Dwarves don't make good Warlocks, dispite giving a Primary Stat, and they don't make Good Wizards, dispite having stats beneficial to being Wizardly. The Race may have benefits that fit the Seeker class, Dex and Wis may be useful to the Seeker class. By your own logic - The Seeker being Psionic actually make sense. Lets imagine the Seeker uses Dex based skills or uses Lightblades, maybe he has a secondary benefit from Wis, mayb his main stat is Cha and having a good source of AC would be nice. We don't know anything about the class, but we do know that Githzerai may make good ones (even if they don't offer a primary stat). |
| #70LordDreadmanAug 06, 2009 22:13:21 | Believe what you want, man. I really don't find your argument compelling, nor do I believe that my logic supports your theory. I'm pretty sure of myself at this point, and I feel as if I've given my reasons, so I'm done arguing the subject. Best of luck to you! May the best man win! Sincerely, Lord Dreadman |
| #71anubis_reynardAug 06, 2009 22:28:33 | I'm in the "Primal- Shinto Archer" groop, myself, but that may be wishful thinking- I'd really like to have one. |
| #72elfspeakerAug 07, 2009 3:04:52 | I'm going to support the Shinto Archer idea. I'm not sure whether it will be Divine or Primal but the game is currently lacking in ranged attackers. I think this concept would probably be a striker. |
| #73damoncasaleAug 07, 2009 7:52:44 | Do we know if the Shadow power source will be in PHB3? Maybe the Seeker is a Shadow something-or-other? I agree that "Seeker" doesn't sound very psionic, so that seems to leave Shadow as the power source...unless there will be other power sources in PHB3.... Damon |
| #74Silver_BlazeAug 07, 2009 8:21:52 | Do we know if the Shadow power source will be in PHB3? Maybe the Seeker is a Shadow something-or-other? We know for a fact that Shadow is not in PHB3, so there is a 100% chance of the Seeker not being Shadow. PHB3 is Psionic, Divine, and Primal Heroes. |
| #75BelorinAug 07, 2009 10:22:44 | Thinking it over I decided the Seeker is a Primal striker, one who uses a spirit called a seeker to guide their ranged weapons to their targets. Typical 'seekers' would be eagles, hawks, owls and falcons or panthers, lions, tigers and cheetahs. The class should be able to use up to medium armor. Bel |
| #76McnancyAug 07, 2009 12:08:07 | I have a hard time seeing Githzerai as favoring a primal class, they did not put Druid on the list of classes they favor so why would they put a Primal one. IMO because there's no Druid on the list of classes Githzerai favor, the Seeker is not Primal. My idea for the Seeker is more like Indiana Jones but with a Divine twist; They're archivists who go searching for divine artifacts, lost lore, secret places and the greater truths they might hold, they arm themselves with the forgotten knowledge and sacred reliquary they've collected, they might know the blessings of an ancient god or even their curse. I could see one class build being more scholarly and bookish using truename lore and ancient scripture to fight, and the other build being more of a two fisted treasure hunter who uses sacred items, materials and the blessings placed upon them by random long lost gods. I'm thinking the Archivist would use Int(good match for Devas, ancient divine lore and all) and favor Implement attacks(tomes for sure), the Treasure Hunter would use Dex (thus good for Githzerai) and favor weapon attacks (multiclass with Monk to be a real two fisted treasure hunter), Leader makes the most sense because Invoker and Avenger already use those stats, and I see them starting with only cloth prof but with no big reason not to take leather prof. "Ash from the temple ruins of Zaluul is known to ward off evil and heal the righteous, let's see if it works" It's unique and interesting, It's a classic archetype and it stands out from other classes, and thats what I think is most important in a new class. Some pics: |
| #77MaoiNekoAug 07, 2009 13:42:51 | I agree with Seeker being Divine. It would be nice if it was a domain based Divine class without worshiping Gods, seeking Divinity in ideals and the universe as a whole. This would be very similar to a class that was in Dragonlance 3.5 (the mystic) and I think it would fit nicely with the Far Realm invasion of PHB3. |
| #78LordDreadmanAug 07, 2009 13:45:54 | Hopefully not an Indiana Jones style Divine class. The Explorer class already does that so well! Seriously, if you want Indie, that's the class for you! Sincerely, Lord Dreadman |

IMO because there's no Druid on the list of classes Githzerai favor, the Seeker is not Primal. This quote, and the previous quotes on the Githzerai only favoring the Monk out of any of the psionic classes leads me to believe that the Seeker is almost definitely a divine class. But then, that was my first impression when I heard the name. |
| #82danmakoAug 08, 2009 0:50:36 | yeah im throwing mt hat in the ring for divine as well actually With RL background and the lofic presented here it seems right Gives me hope of the "Divine" bard, but in the sense that they can use all the domains and channel divinities as the core idea of their class....lots of utility with CD l |

| #86KoboldAvengerAug 09, 2009 5:05:31 | Seeker has been used in D&D before: They were a "faction" in Spelljammer, a bunch of scholarly explorers who were generally the good guys. And it happens to be the nickname of the Mind's Eye faction in Planescape that rose from the ashes of the Believers of the Source and the Sign of One. But as for what the Seeker class might be, to me it sounds sort of striker-ish but honestly I see any possible role attached to a name like Seeker in some way. Maybe they'll get some bonus to Insight and Perception as one of their flavour class abilities. |
| #87JohnLynchAug 09, 2009 6:39:08 | That said, I'm inclined to lean Psionic, maybe even Psionic Defender. Because there's a sweet feat for Psionic Githzerai, "Iron Resolve of Zerthadlum" that grants a bonus to saves as long as you have a power point, and all the other mentionned favoured classes do not use power points. It could also simply have it because githzerai are meant to be the "psionic" race of the book so if they don't favour any of the psionic classes, they may have felt the need to throw it a bone. Just the article, it seems. It is still in place in both the character builder and the compendium. I guess they didn't intend to drop that tidbit of information yet. Heh, nice ![]() Lol, guess they didn't mean to let that slip just yet. It is annoying they let that slip, but haven't said what next month's preview for PHB3 will be like they did with this month's. Its something we won't expect. I'm hoping and praying I expect it though. Kind of annoying, because the class names are usually evocative; you know what a barbarian is, or a bard, or a wizard, or a cleric. Seeker is...one who looks for something. Which could mean anything. What the heck's an avenger? You avenge stuff? Cool. Do you wield a shield too? Its pretty generic. In modern parlance, a "seeker" is someone exploring but not committed to one or more religions, belief systems, faiths, denominations, or styles of devotion. I'd go seven-to-one that it's a divine class. I think others have made a good argument as to why it isn't psionic. But this is a pretty interesting description for a divine class ![]() In addition, I totally jive with the whole "even gods need balance" feel coming from a divine githzarai character. Same. I created a Lawful Good Divine Character! For those who know me that's a big major step. I typically play Unaligned characters and you'll have a hard time determining if I'm unaligned or evil ;) But Githzerai for me open up the door to lawful good. Because I'm not an extremist (which is how I typically view the lawful good and chaotic evil alignments). I'm simply seeking to strengthen the world the best I can while respecting the world and the other gods. |
| #88Duke5150Aug 09, 2009 7:43:42 | I place my bet on the seeker being a class designed to hunt down psionic foes, the basis for the illithid slayer.;) |
| #89ignizAug 09, 2009 10:15:29 | It could be renamed Hunter by the time the PHB 3 comes out, hell if it's a the new Dragon Lance class it could be bloody anything, Martial Controller. If the new campaign comes out before the PHB 3, or roughly the same time, it could be the class from that series. It could also have been deleted because the class was only conceptual and not actually appearing in the PHB3. |
| #90MyztekAug 09, 2009 11:10:27 | 1.) Likely not psionic. That means either Divine or Primal if we assume that Seeker appears in PHB 3. 2.) Likely uses either dexterity or wisdom as a prime attribute - and likely the other as a secondary attribute. 3.) 'Seeker' seems less like a Defender as seeking seems more offense and less defense. Seeker doesn't sound particularly controllerish either. 4.) There is a D&D history that associates 'seeker' with divine classes. That history is related to Dragonlance, which seems like a major candidate for the next campaign setting. 5.) We already have a wisdom/dexterity divine striker. 6.) I have not followed the Dragonlance saga too closely (I have not read a Dragonlance book since the early 90s), but as I understand it there is a bit of a power vacuum in the divinity of Krynn that could lead to people seeking Gods. That all leads me to divine leader, which is the best match for the Dragonlance concept of old - with a twist. My best guess: The seeker is a divine leader who prosthletizes for a seemingly departed God (or other mysteriously divine being) that he knows little of, but seeks to discover more about and for whom he seeks to rebuild a faith. You might have seekers of the old Gods in Krynn, Seekers of the Gods that disappeared or died recently in Faerun, or Seekers of some of the Gods from prior editions that didn't make the cut for the PHB in 4E. Or, perhaps, seekers for being aspring to divinity (prior PCs?) |

| #92archangel62Aug 10, 2009 1:28:09 | A seeker is someone who searches for the idea of the universal oneness, the core heartbeat of all creation pouring through the thoughts, dreams, and minds of all creation good and evil regardless of what they were born as all are part of this ultimate oversoul. The seeker is a psionic leader class that uses their powers to awaken their allies to the hidden bonds between them, helping them to coordinate, manuever and build on each other. This class also has elements of controller, breaking the bonds between enemies as well as using the bonds between all things to manipulate or weaken ones foes. Edit: At least that's my theory. |

| #95LordDreadmanAug 10, 2009 21:01:42 | Oh, it's a Martial Controller. Yup, which means all those nay-sayers are wrong. I mean, unless they look it over and come up with some real reasons for why a Martial Controller wouldn't work, their argument is pretty much shot, isn't it? It has worked great at my table, and it maintains a very Martial feel to it. Personally, I think Martial classes are some of the most interesting available, so I'm glad that we have another. Personally, I'm excited for the Explorer. :pile: Frankly, it's about time somebody did this since WotC isn't willing to try. Well. There it is. Sincerely, Lord Dreadman |

| #97burningroseAug 11, 2009 0:46:24 | A seeker is someone who searches for the idea of the universal oneness, the core heartbeat of all creation pouring through the thoughts, dreams, and minds of all creation good and evil regardless of what they were born as all are part of this ultimate oversoul. Why do people keep suggesting these Psionic ideas when we know (almost entirely) for sure that the Seeker is not a Psionic class? |
| #98gedgarooAug 11, 2009 1:22:54 | Given that Stephen Schubert said that githzerai will have to come by the primary stat for the other three psionic classes the hard way, I think it is likely that the Seeker is either divine or primal (and just based on the name alone it sounds like a divine class rather than a primal one). An alternative could be that the Seeker is a Psionic class that has Dex and Wis as their two possible secondaries. Or it is possible that the Githzerai have good flavour matching and the wis bonus to the secondary. This would be similar to the favor that Devas have towards Clerics - although wis is primary for Clerics. When I read Seeker strikers are immediately called ot mind, much like Avengers. Although they could be good leaders, seeking out their party members in the darkness of the world, or controllers, finding and spoiling plans with debuffs. |
| #99Mengu74Aug 11, 2009 9:03:20 | I'm still stuck on the snitch... We know Githzerai make good seekers. They have high wisdom so they can spot the snitch. They have an initiative bonus so they'll be the first to dive for it. They have high dexterity, so they can catch the snitch. They have a bonus to athletics and acrobatics so they can ride their broom fast and won't fall off it easily. If they do happen to be hit by a bludger they can shake off being dazed or stunned quicker than most. Maybe the designers just have a sense of humor. |
| #100Omni-WyvernilAug 11, 2009 9:38:34 | Seeker as psionic is highly unlikely, as mentioned before, due to the comments of the developers. This leaves either primal or divine. The name doesn't really suggest an archetype on its own, so we don't know for sure what this class will entail. |
| #101ekioAug 11, 2009 10:18:26 | Yup, which means all those nay-sayers are wrong. Or it is possible that the Githzerai have good flavour matching and the wis bonus to the secondary. This would be similar to the favor that Devas have towards Clerics - although wis is primary for Clerics. I doubt it. All the other classes on the list use either Dex or Wisdom as a main stat, and then the other as a secondary. Hell, they didn't even put Druids down for purely thematic reasons, even though mechanically, Githzerai would make great Druids. I can't imagine them then putting a class that doesn't use either Dex or Wisdom as a main stat up there on the list, and not also including Wizards (use Dex or Wisdom as secondary stats) or Druids (see above). Devas are only listed as being good for clerics because of a correct main stat and overwhelmingly divine flavor, and the Githzerai already lacks that main stat for the other Psionic classes. It's not a good comparison. |
| #105McnancyAug 11, 2009 18:43:35 | I like the Idea of a Divine class that's not tied to morality; that's why I like the Idea of the Seeker being an adventuring archivist. | #109LordDreadmanAug 11, 2009 23:33:32 | LOL! It's "Inset Paranoia." It's an attack where your beast is harrying an opponent, and you fire a bolt past his head to drive him to the brink. It works something like "Storm Pillar." Not quite, but close. (Though "Insect Paranoia" has a certain ring to it too :D ) Yeah, the font is small. I can't hardly make it out, and I know what it says. They probably do that on purpose. Incidentally, the trapped condition is pretty neat. Obviously, I can't reprint the class here, so I'll shut up ... but it is neat, if I do say so myself. Anyways, we've gotten away from the topic. I've already made my peace with Seeker as Divine Leader, but I'm sure someone else has discovered some info I missed. I'd like to hear it. | #110McnancyAug 28, 2009 21:12:27 | After watching a few episodes of the new show Warehouse 13, it really makes me hope that Seekers are divine treasure hunters even more than before. The show made me realize that Seekers wouldn't always be looking in tombs or temples, they might be looking for artifacts and lore that's missing or being abused. |
| #111alitainSep 02, 2009 11:27:54 | I put my vote done on a primal stalker class, hey one of us has to be diffrent. The seek out their prey, dex prim, with wis secondary. You know, I think I'll go with you as it being a primal class. Just because the githzerai lean toward the psionic, doesn't mean all the classes they're good with will be. Maybe it's something similar to the scout, just more primal and such. Then on the other hand, what do we have for psionic classes? Monk- striker Psion- controller(right? Can't really remember) Empath- leader So it could still possibly be the psionic defender...eh oh well. |
| #112jedi123Sep 02, 2009 14:50:26 | I assume Psychic Warrior will be the psionic defender

Can't be called Psychic Warrior, all classes name are single word names. Beside 'Psychic Warrior' is pretty drab for a name. |

I think a designer threw that around somewhere but I forgot where... and so far it holds true. |
| #120McnancySep 07, 2009 18:34:18 | I put my vote done on a primal stalker class, hey one of us has to be diffrent. The seek out their prey, dex prim, with wis secondary. Uhg. If they were going to put a Primal class in the Githzerai's favored class list, why wouldn't they put the Druid? And we already know that Githzerai aren't that good at any other Psionic classes than Monk. That makes the Seeker a Divine class, the question is what kind of Divine class.
I was thinking about it, and if I was making my version of the Seeker, I would make it a V class; Dex vs Int with Wis as the kicker, dex for the Treasure Hunter's weapon attacks for a more adventurer feel, and Int for the Archivist's Implement attacks to make them the most scholarly of Divine classes. That way you could have more races like Tieflings, Halflings, Eladrin and Shadar-Kai make good Seekers too |

Everyone please read this at least once, if not twice or thrice, because it is filled with that nigh unattainable virtue of Truthiness that we all must at some point in our lives aspire to. AKA: Quoted for Truth.
And I think that "Sentinel" is a much cooler name for a Psionic Defender than "Warmind". |
