Since WotC has been releasing miniature sets, there have been miniatures produced in individual sets that are iconic members of various campaign settings.  There have been creatures, characters and npcs from Forgotten Realms, Eberron and Ravenloft for example.  With the release of Dark Sun soon, there are sure to be some miniatures in the upcoming Lords of Madness miniature set that will pertain to Dark Sun just because of some similarity in theme.

It is too late now, but it sure would be great if there was a Dark Sun miniature set that was released at the same time as the campaign setting so we could get our hands on some very pertinent PCs and creatures that go along with the campaing setting as it is released.

Perhaps that could be an idea for future campaign settings, setting books and miniature sets released simultaneously.

How about a Gamma World set to go along with the release of Gamma World?

These sets could be smaller or contain a portion of generic miniatures so as to not alienate players who are not using the setting.

  Thoughts?

I've been wanting this idea for a long time.  Not just with settings, but also with adventures.  It seems like a no-brainer.  Tie-ins help revenue.  Look at all the simultaneous toy, clothing, lunchbox, etc. tie-ins to movies.  Strike while the iron is hot.  Issue miniatures in close proximity to book releases.  Don't wait six months to two years to release monsters or characters that relate to a book.  Support your products, don't frustrate your fanbase.  Nuff said.

It would be fantastic for Wizards to release miniatures WITH adventure modules. A little plastic box attached to the module packaging (akin to those collector's magazines with whatnot inside) that features iconic creatures from that certain mod.
How good would it be to have Piranoth with the Revenge of the Giants adventure or other 'boss enemies' for various adventures, adventure paths or settings such as Hammerfast?

I'd buy a darksun mini set.

I might actually buy pregenerated adventures if they came with a few key minis.  The adventures would get dissected and cherry-picked from, as I prefer my own stories (with the sole exception of the Scales of War game I am running now), but I do like combat encounters in official wotc products.  I find my personal weakness in designing combat encounters is interactive and engaging terrain.
