| #2hunterian7Jan 12, 2011 20:24:00 | It did state that Heroes of Shadow will be released in April as a hardback book. |
| #3cdtalmasJan 12, 2011 20:26:02 | I won't speak for him, but if I had to guess, I'd assume he meant "aside from HoS"... |
| #4NyarlathotepJan 12, 2011 21:02:44 | I won't speak for him, but if I had to guess, I'd assume he meant "aside from HoS"... That's exactly what I meant. I think HoS only gets in there because it was too far along to cancel. If their plans for D&D's future is nothing but board games and accessories, I don't like it one bit. |
| #5tsukinousagiJan 13, 2011 7:13:11 | I could think up a fairly sizable list of perfectly easy to do books I'd be more than happy to pay for if they were in hardcover. Two I'd jump in in a heart beat would be Dungeon Delve for 1 player groups, and Dungeon Delve for 3 player groups. Because it seems a common complaint, 'what do I do if I have only 1 player', and 'we can't find 4 players for even the lower 4 person option'. Because not all of us feel like poking and prodding at an adventure or encounter made for 5 as if we had a lot of skill or interest in doing so. Yeah they say 'oh just remove X points in creatures from the encounters'. But if the encounter was designed for a controller and 10 minions, what is his reason for the encounter if he only has 2 minions? I'd also love Dungeon Delves made for say Elf or Dwarf parties. Or a campaign where the group is actually the Goblins or Orcs just for the odd change of pace. But only if they are hardcover and like the current Dungeon Delve ie 1 to 30th level assortments. They can forget it if it's softcover and not 1 to 30. I don't need rehashed stuff. The Annuals were not interesting. I'm sure a hardcover done for a specific nation would be interesting. I have been plaing in the 5 Nations in Eberron. I'm sure they can go further than 3-5 pages of content. The thing is, I don't think WotC really wishes to make 4th edition last indefinitely. And recent comments in recent threads has done nothing to make me think I am wrong there. I think 2011 will see 4th left to dry out. I'd be shocked to see anything of merit hit the shelf in 2012. |
| #6Cyber-DaveJan 13, 2011 10:03:53 | I will be very surprised if the Forgotten Realms book doesn't still get released. I will be very upset if the Ravenloft setting doesn't get released. I am very upset that the other three books in question will not be released. |
| #7kairirosesJan 13, 2011 12:10:57 | I will be very surprised if the Forgotten Realms book doesn't still get released. I will be very upset if the Ravenloft setting doesn't get released. I am very upset that the other three books in question will not be released. I'm in total agreeance about the Neverwinter book and the Ravenloft boxed set. However, I do kind of think that the other three books that were canceled could probably be just as easily dealt with by way of online articles (although actual in-print books are always my preference.) My main hope is that the cancellation of these 3 books won't stop us from getting Core Setting Themes, revised rules for multi-classing and rituals, and all the other needed stuff that was supposed to be in "Heroes of Sword and Spell" and the Hero Builder's book (don't remember what it was called off-hand. I'm not 100% sad to see the "Heroes of Sword and Spell" book disappear though (as long as we still get the new ritual and multiclass rules) because it didn't really seem like they had actually revised anything, just rewrote them with the tiers broken down. (At least based off the one preview of the Weaponmaster.) |
| #8AlvericJan 13, 2011 12:49:55 | Well, as much as I appreciate the update on the main page, I don't think we have a complete picture of what is actually going to be released in the way of books. vs. accessories, etc. I'd wait until all the DDXP announcements come out. For instance, I haven't seen anything about Monster Vault 2, although it's mentioned on the DDXP website as being released as late as June. I'm assuming that this will be another combo box set with books and tokens, fixing the math on more pre-MM3 monsters... but the point is that a lot of product won't be announced/confirm for a couple of weeks yet, including supplements and books that we don't know about yet. (I do hope that we get something for FR, though.) My guess on the 3 cancelled books is that they are going to fill the magazine content gap with much of it, especially given the announcement of several free weekly columns online. Those columns will have content that was previously stuck in the magazines on a monthly basis, so they'll need something to fill that gap in the magazines. |
| #9HoundstoothJan 13, 2011 14:47:46 | Dungeons and Dragons to me is in the books. It is not D&D themed board games. I like cards and accessories but that is not the core of D&D. I will never play a D&D board game, so I guess if I want more books... its time to start converting Pathfinder to 4e? |
| #10NyarlathotepJan 13, 2011 14:51:53 | I wouldn't say I would NEVER play a D&D board game; I used to love the old Dungeon board game, way back in the day and for a while they were talking about a 'Conquest of Nerath' that sounded like it could have been right up my alley. I just don't want board games and dice cozies to be the only new D&D product coming out. I can think of lots of books and supplements I'd buy if they'd make them. And turning it into a toy line by any other name smacks of the death of D&D to me. |
| #11Chiba_MonkeyJan 13, 2011 15:02:28 |
That first idea woud be a terrible product, it's too niche. But the second one, if done like 'Reverse Dungeon" might be fun. I'm sure a hardcover done for a specific nation would be interesting. Unlike FR, Eberron did not do a time jump or any major fluff changes from 3.5 to 4e. So the 3.5 Eberron books fluff info is all still good. If you buy Five Nations, for example, the only things not directly and immediatel useable are the stat blocks and magic items. |
| #12munchmausen1Jan 14, 2011 11:19:10 | As an entire book, I agree. As a sampling of the delves within an otherwise standard book, I think it would be a lot of fun. Adjust the maps to make use of the given race's strengths and weaknesses and it serves both as a standalone delve and campaign idea starter. |
| #13tigger11Jan 14, 2011 18:35:55 | Well, as much as I appreciate the update on the main page, I don't think we have a complete picture of what is actually going to be released in the way of books. vs. accessories, etc. I'd wait until all the DDXP announcements come out. (I do hope that we get something for FR, though.) I'm not sure if they have changed the name to Monster Vault 2, but Monster Vault: Nentir Valley is slated for a June 21st release so we've known about it they may have changed its name. Then we have Neverwinter in August (which will come out because of the Video Game/Book tie in), and then Madness in Gardmore Abbey for September, which might be a fun module (with a Deck of Many Things included), but besides board games, some cards, and another minature pack (ala Orcus or beholders) I dont expect anything to be added to the list pre-September at this late date. Its just last month we had wilderness tiles, nothing this month, next month ice tiles and a new DM Screen, March nothing, April finally a book(HOS), then Shadowfell in May, June has the monster vault and swamp tiles, july nothing, its a pretty sparse first nine months of the year. |
| #14borogamerJan 15, 2011 6:08:00 | following a pretty sparse last five months, if you aren't interested in the essentials rubbish... i hate box sets generally, harder to store (i prefer just a book i can put on my shelf), cost more (boxed games are taxed here, books aren't, added on the extra starting cost of tokens and boxes, means monster vault cost nearly twice what Heroes of forgotten badger does essentially for some tokens that i'm not arsed about) |
| #15robertread3Jan 15, 2011 15:42:43 | honestly i dont think that they are not going to publish more books, more that they may of felt that the content wasn't up to par with what they wanted they may just be taking the "if you cant do it right, dont do it at all" approach to this |
| #16undraveJan 15, 2011 15:45:08 |
Well that would certainly be a first>.> |
| #17lokiareJan 15, 2011 16:07:55 |
If they did that from the beginning we'd have about half of the books we have now... Not saying its a bad idea though... |
| #18volkaiJan 16, 2011 16:26:05 | Dungeons and Dragons to me is in the books. It is not D&D themed board games. Or convert your game(s) from 4e to Pathfinder. |
| #19Darkwolf_BloodsbaneJan 16, 2011 22:25:17 | Dungeons and Dragons to me is in the books. It is not D&D themed board games. Or, you know, try something non-paizo. |
| #20KalnaurJan 17, 2011 5:10:08 | Dungeons and Dragons to me is in the books. It is not D&D themed board games. Well that's silly. Didn't you know the ultimate insult is to switch to something inspired by work that WotC had done? ;) |
| #21kairirosesJan 17, 2011 7:23:55 | Dungeons and Dragons to me is in the books. It is not D&D themed board games. inspired by... yeah right Don't get me wrong, everything I've read thus far of the Pathfinder books makes me really like their campaign setting and story/background fluff... however, that doesn't stop it from being little more than a slight revision of D&D 3rd edition. It'd be no different if Steve Jackson Games (as a hypothetical) gave another company the rights to publish material for GURPS 4th edition... then a couple of years later SJG switches to a 5th edition and the other company decides to publish eratta for the previous edition and start calling it thier own game system. Now if only the world of Golorian (the world of Pathfinder) had 4th edition conversion rules... that'd be something I could get behind. Because the world itself is rather nifty, even if the rules only continue the mistakes of the previous edition that 4th was trying to fix. |
| #22volkaiJan 17, 2011 8:42:18 | Another option you could try is Enlightened Grognard ( www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discus... ) which is somewhere between 3.5/Pathfinder and 4e. It's still under development, but it shows a lot of promise. |
| #23BombergJan 18, 2011 5:56:37 |
That should be no problem. At least the setting book is pretty rules-agnostic. I don't know about later books, though Huldvoll Baron von Bomberg |
| #24zman123Jan 18, 2011 6:54:39 | I have some good news, concerning the future of role-playing games. Goodman Games is currently working on a game system that uses the D20 3.0 rules system and it plays like a 2nd edition Dungeons and Dragons game. So worry not fellow role-players about the demise of Dungeons and Dragons, there is still hope on the horizon for you all. |
| #25veronusJan 18, 2011 7:36:51 | I enjoy 4th edition, I'm not big on the essentials stuff and wish they would have just left it alone after the Dark Sun setting was released and focused on a new "book series" for Gamma World or even a Modern setting and started using the 4E rule set to make books for GW, Modern etc, and accessories for all of it. |
| #26clemJan 18, 2011 13:26:01 | inspired by... yeah right If only they could include material from Tome of Battle in Pathfinder -- I think that would hit my personal sweet spot for the aspects of 4e and 3.5e that I prefer. I realize someone could (and probably already did) homebrew just this ruleset, but most of my play is in share-world campaigns. |
| #27Tony_VargasJan 20, 2011 11:57:58 | It did state that Heroes of Shadow will be released in April as a hardback book. That is quite a shift. Pre-E, we were deluged with D&D books - 3 PHs, 2 DMGs, 3 MMs, 6 Powers books, 2 magic item books, campaign guides for Ebberon, Forgotten Realms, & Dark Sun, monster-themed books, race-themed books. Now, after the 10 'evergreens' are out, we aparently get 0 books in the first quarter of '11? That's quite a shift in publishing strategy. It seems that Essentials may turn out to be more of a capstone for 4e than a new begining for a 4.5e. It's weirdly backwards, introducing the 'starter set,' of book last, but, hey 4e has been a departure in a lot of ways. Between Gamma World & Fortune Cards on the one hand and on-line only DDI utilities on the other, it seems like the future distribution model might favor cards and on-line content over books. On line content requiring a subscription produces a regular income stream, which the suits at Hasbro would like, and cards sell content at a much higher profit margin than books, also a suit-pleaser. Ultimately the goal is to wring more money out of the customer base for less content, which is a perfectly reasonble thing for a publisher to want to do. But, if it means delivering less percieved value-for-the-money, it'll shrink that customer base, too, even as it fattens the margins. They just have to hope the the latter more than makes up for the former. |
