| #1NyarlathotepMay 08, 2009 8:59:17 | With Eberron ready to start rolling out in the next month or so, when will we know about 2010's setting? Idle speculation is fun and all, but since I have never been an Eberron fan and am reeeeeeeaaaaaaalllllllllllly hoping that the next setting will be Dark Sun, I am dying to find out what the next CS will be. |

They've already said Gencon. So... got a few months. Let the heated debates resume! |
| #3sallaMay 08, 2009 9:34:16 | They've already said Gencon. So... got a few months. Correct. The speculation will end when, and only when, WotC directly states 'the 2010 Campaign Setting will be (this)'. |
| #4joni-sanMay 08, 2009 9:56:56 | And then the debate will be replaced with "What is the 2011 setting?" :P |
| #5NyarlathotepMay 08, 2009 10:05:05 | They've already said Gencon. So... got a few months. I missed that but it makes sense. Thanks. |
| #6sigil_beguilerMay 08, 2009 10:29:22 | Correct. The speculation will end when, and only when, WotC directly states 'the 2010 Campaign Setting will be (this)'. Nah, then we will begin to speculate on specifics; what races there will be, what classes, etc. |
| #7CyvarisMay 08, 2009 11:17:10 | Will speculation about D&D ever end, want the sappy answer Yes it will, at the same time all 3e and 4e players will join hands, hug trees, play the same edtion, and stop fighting. We will never stop speculating its to much fun. |
| #8ranadielMay 08, 2009 11:19:05 | And then the debate will be replaced with "What is the 2011 setting?" :P But that implies that we haven't started speculating that already.:P |
| #9Vilnias_NastavnikMay 08, 2009 11:23:16 | Nah, then we will begin to speculate on specifics; what races there will be, what classes, etc. Don't forget all the whining about why (insert 2010 Campaign Setting here) is a bad choice and that DnD is going down the toilet, bla bla bla bla. |
| #10_Mithreinmaethor_May 08, 2009 12:43:22 | Don't forget all the whining about why (insert 2010 Campaign Setting here) is a bad choice and that DnD is going down the toilet, bla bla bla bla. That is inevitable unfortunately. |
| #11Vilnias_NastavnikMay 08, 2009 13:25:05 | That is inevitable unfortunately. Sad but true, although I found a way to shut them up.....challenge them to make their own rules based on the existing ones, then they skulk away in defeat because they prove they are simply too lazy to make their own, thus becoming dependent on others to supply the rules for them. If they took the time wasted on blasting the work of others to research the asian culture and make their own 4E "Oriental Adventures" (for example, not picking on the OA crowd), they might be a lot happier. |
| #12KalnaurMay 08, 2009 16:21:37 | Personally, I'd love to see them release a new camaign world in 2010. Then again, I'm a new D&Der who doesn't really care about the old campaign worlds or have any tie to them. ![]() |
| #13rutherfordrMay 08, 2009 18:31:33 | Me too -- I'd like to see an Astral Sea campaign guide for the PoL campaign setting. |
| #14jacksmithivMay 08, 2009 19:27:24 | Personally, I'd love to see them release a new camaign world in 2010. Then again, I'm a new D&Der who doesn't really care about the old campaign worlds or have any tie to them. +1 |
| #15NyarlathotepMay 08, 2009 20:00:01 | Yeah, but if your both new to the game and have no tie to the old campaigns, wouldn't that make ALL of them new to you.:P |
| #16Vilnias_NastavnikMay 08, 2009 20:00:05 | Personally, I'd love to see them release a new camaign world in 2010. Then again, I'm a new D&Der who doesn't really care about the old campaign worlds or have any tie to them. I'm an old school gamer and would love to see new life brought into settings like Dark Sun, but I agree with DL and GH to be knock offs of Forgotten Realms. I think a new setting would be in order, however I think it's going to wait until 2011 when WOTC can look back and see where the DnD line is actually headed, business wise. I also see a pattern possibly developing, first there was FR (classic) now there will be Eberron (newer), next year should be a classic setting (Dark Sun, Dragonlance or perhaps even Blackmoor) followed by a new(er) setting, that would be my guess. |
| #17doctorhookMay 08, 2009 20:02:01 | *Crosses fingers* Rich Burlew's setting, Rich Burlew's setting, Rich Burlew's setting... |
| #18Silver_BlazeMay 08, 2009 23:24:58 | I agree with DL and GH to be knock offs of Forgotten Realms. I am sorry, but this statement is so full of stupid that it hurts. GH and DL both predate FR by several years. If anything, FR is a knock-off, albeit a popular one, of both of those CSs. By old gamer do you mean pre-4e but not pre-3e? |

The only thing that hurts is that you couldn't make a valid point without schoolyard name calling, way to go, your mom must be proud. By old timer I mean in 1981 at the young age of 10 I saved my allowance for 3 weeks and bought the AD&D boxed set from my FLGS. Historically DL and GH came first, but FR struck a nerve with gamers everywhere and made it more popular by leaps and bounds, making it the "better" fantasy setting of 2E. I don't see GH being anything special, nothing more than sentimental, and as for DL I wouldn't mind seeing a 4E update as long as it doesn't even come close to the critical miss of 3E. |
| #20Silver_BlazeMay 09, 2009 0:47:23 | The only thing that hurts is that you couldn't make a valid point without schoolyard name calling, way to go, your mom must be proud. DL's major failing in 3e was the CS that WotC put out. It was haphazardly put together garbage that most DL fans ultimately ignored. The real meat of 3e DL was the stuff put out by Sovereign Press/Margaret Weis Productions. BTW, I am in favor of re-outsourcing Dragonlance to MWP. Those people put a lot of heart into their 3.5e stuff, I would expect everything and more from them for 4e. Though WotC is a very different company than it was six years ago, so perhaps they would produce something noteworthy. |

I bought the DL CS and you are wrong, it was done by Sovereign Press, not WOTC, they only loaned the rights out. The lameness was all on Sovereign and Weis, WOTC is free and clear on that one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragonlance Read under "Further Development" in the "Publication History" section. |

SP/MWP obtained the rights to publish every 3.5e DL product following the DLCS, which was published under Wizards of the Coast. Because all of those products were licensed by WotC, they still had final editing rights, but all subsequent products were made by SP/MWP. |
| #23Vilnias_NastavnikMay 09, 2009 9:38:55 | *picks up his autographed copy of the Dragonlance Campaign Setting* Well, I remember the book sucking so bad (even the paper was cheap compared to the FRCG) and reading someone other than WOTC staff was working on it, I figured it was not acknowledged as WOTC product. I would examine mine to see if you are correct (I believe you are) but I have no idea what happened to it since I bought it, opened it, felt like I wasted my money and put it on a shelf. Let's hope they do better........but I still would rather see Dark Sun over Dragonlance in 2010. |

| #25chrthMay 11, 2009 15:11:47 | Are you sure your advanced age isn't clouding your memories on this one? Ouch, be nice. You know what he meant. Any chance of a campaign setting where the Primordials defeated the Divines? That's what I want. |
| #26Vilnias_NastavnikMay 11, 2009 15:49:10 | Are you sure your advanced age isn't clouding your memories on this one? lol, no my advanced age grants me the wisdom to see you have nothing better to do than be OCD about my statement. Is mom's basement that boring? Don't worry, when puberty hits you'll have something to do down there. |
| #27ranadielMay 11, 2009 17:47:58 | Any chance of a campaign setting where the Primordials defeated the Divines? That's what I want. I wouldn't count on it since that setting's cosmology would basically consist solely of the abadoned Astral Sea, Elemental Chaos, and the "material plane"(which would just be an extension of the Elemental Chaos that is destroyed and rebuilt every other Tuesday except on leap years). -=Edit: Oh and I imagine that most of the playable species would be mostly extinct from the constant rebuilding of the world. I can only really see the Genasi and maybe Dragonborn doing well in such an enviornment.=- |
| #28tiwaztyrsfistMay 11, 2009 18:11:18 | I have inside information from my psychic that the 2010 campaign setting will be Maztica, returned as a wholely seperate campaign setting, unrelated to Forgotten Realms. Also, the entire MM3 will consist of the oddest and silliest monsters of the past D&D editions, like Giant Space Hampsters and those jelly fish people. And the replacement 8th power source to take the place of Ki will be Pokemans. That is all. P.S. I have a really nice bridge I'd like to sell. Well located, high trafic, you could make a fortune by putting up toll boths. Honest. |

Don't worry, when puberty hits you'll have something to do down there. Yeah perhaps the two of you could have basement to basement VoIP chats with one another. I just want everyone to know that not all old school gamers are like VN here |
| #30Vilnias_NastavnikMay 11, 2009 19:39:41 | I just want everyone to know that not all old school gamers are like VN here Old timers aren't mart enough to come up with a good comeback at a moronic insult from an OCD tweak? OK, as you wish... |
| #31e105zetaMay 11, 2009 19:54:18 | Emo is in, hopefully that means return to Ravenloft. I want to bash the crap out of haughty undead and turn it into an art form. |
| #32redxdeliversMay 12, 2009 14:29:18 | as far as i can recall the order they came out was greyhawk mystara dragonlance forgotten realms ravenloft spelljammer darksun planescape birthright. forgotten realms cannibalised alot of the things that made greayhawk(drow) and mystara(ethnic cultures) interesting. so i doubt well see either return. dragonlance was dfifficult to run as the best adventure had already been played. no matter how hard you tried your wizard wasnt cooler than raistlin/palin/magius. it may have a shot as a setting in a post war of souls timeline where everything is new yet familiar somilar to 4gotten realms. having already shuffled between systems and changed dynamics a fresh start in fourth could be healthy. ravenloft/planescape/spelljammer have been incorporated into the default setting in my opinion where they belong dark sun pretty much defines the default theme of points of light but at the same time limited characters (no paladins) to the point that it almost didnt resemble the core game. with the emphasis on making everything core i see the dark sun setting as the most likely candidate to be redone though alot of the limitations will be phased out. dark sun had alot of "you cant do that" which i dont see as part of the new edition. birthright was about large battles and could work as a default setting for the miniature game but it never really apealed to me as a roleplaying/adventure setting. so yeah dark sun maybe showcasing the new psionics rules this summer but after that it would probably be a new setting with dragonlance to follow. perhaps in combination with a new novel series set in the post war of souls timeline. |

This is one of the only reasons I'm hessitating to call it in the favor of Dark Sun. I don't see them ever putting out a core setting where they have scrap something like an entire power source because "The Campaign Says So". They could do a setting overhaul, FR style, but then we'd have to hear the Dark Sun fans *****ing for a year. |

This is my guess, if they do release Dark Sun as a CS, it would be drastically altered to make sure it is completely universal (something they've said was a main objective from the beginning). |
| #35jwtMay 12, 2009 15:14:37 | With the monk going psionic, I really think that DS just got a bump on the list. (Although Elemental would fit as well.) But that is just a gut feeling I have. And whatever the setting I hope that there is 0 chance that they will scrap the power system. My bet is that the powers themselves become more intricate... (see Warlock Vestiges, Monk Ful Diciplines, and Barbarian Rage powers for more on that) So we might see defilers with powers that get a burst if you use healing surges, and maybe if you hit with a daily you can siphon off healing surges.... or some such. |
