Will the necromancer class be revived with the Open Grave book or somewhere else?

The necromancer class will come out in a PHB with the shadow power source.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how the next slew of classes will be built - if we are going to see new classes or add-ons to the old ones. I expect it will be the former, but it should be curious. I'm sure there will not only be a necromancer, but a dozen, dozen of them, especially say, by October.

Since there is only one more PHB expected to be out by Oct, and just about every clue thusfar has pointed to Necromancer not being in there, I'm not so sure about that guess. I do see them putting out a Necromancer, mind you, just that it's probably 2010 territory.

Given that the only PHB due out in October is the deluxe edition PHB I, which is to say, what we got in June with a fancy leather cover and perhaps errata, I would assume he meant the PHB II, coming out in March, 2009.

I said a PHB, not the II. II is divine, arcane, and primal.

How about this Open Grave book? I couldn't find any info on what this one will be about. Is there a chance that it would have say a template for necromancer and some power descriptions in it?

We really don't know too much about it. It is a DM book, so it will not have player options in it. It is believed to be in the same vein as the Draconomicon, so it will basically be expanding on the lore of undead creatures. We know it will definatly have new undead monsters for all levels of play. It will probably have a couple of templates, but there will most likely not be one for the necromancer class(as we have no powers for it) and there will most certainly not be any powers(As they are player options).

However if you want to get an idea of how 4ed's default fluff is handling undead, it will probably be a good book to help you see where the fluff with the necromancer is heading.

As long as it's not only available to evil characters. I have desired for so long to make a good or at least neutral necromancer character.

Well they seem to have done away with base class requirements, so as long as it is a base class(which seems likely) that should be more then posiible eventually.

That's not exactly set in stone. It will likely be there, but it has in no way been confirmed that we will ever see a PC playable necromancer.

Not trying to turn up the flame on you Pigs, just saying your reply exuded the smell of being backed up by WotC doctrine... and it decidedly is not.

Though I must say, it would be pretty slick if we get it...

Well it has been said that they held back on necromancy spells for wizards for a potential future class focused on such spells, and given that one of the given descriptions of the shadow power sources specifically mentions its use in necromancy, I think that most of his statement can be backed up. About the only thing that can't be is that it will definatly come out, however they are leaving room for it. About the only things I think could stop it from eventually coming out would be the developers not being able to come up with interesting mechanics(unlikely), the world ends before it is released, or a certain poster goes back in time and somehow manages to stop 4ed from coming out(which creates a paradox eventually resulting in the world ending).

Note to self, do not lone flux capacitor to player complaining about 4e... could result in doom... or riches... but more likely doom...

I love Necromancers and Undead.

That said, 4E presents a fiew problems which may keep us from seeing one for a while...

Necromancers (the ones who use undead any ways) are usually evil or at best unaligned, this isn't in keeping with the heroic nature of D&D the current edition is trying to emphasize. Even the darkest PC Tiefling Warlock isn't bringing the loved ones of townsfolk back from the dead to act as slave labor.

The mechanics for PC controlled minions have yet to be developed, it was frequently too powerful in the past for PC necromancers to get actions for there character and x minions all in the same turn.

If WotC feels they have the answers to these issues I'm sure we will see one, if not the most we will likely get are DM rules for allowing a monster class as a PC.

I just wanted to point out that from all indications that we have right now(summoning items in Adventurer's Vault, ranger animal companion in Martial Power, and some kind of leader with a pet in PHBII) they do have mechanics for player controlled minions developed, they just haven't been officially released yet. Look through the Adventurer's Vault previews if you want to get an idea of what they look like.
