| #1RedHeadSamurai23May 30, 2009 23:15:06 | ok with the release of the monk i am kind of upset from the diversion to psionic, but understand it. im now wondering though what will happen to the Ki power source. if it will just be forgotten entirely or something else will happen with it. personally i still wish for it to be fleshed out. though that's only because id wish for a samurai class instead of it just being a kind of add on feat for the fighter. well feel free to post your thoughts I know i am probably goin to start a **** storm, but im just a huge fan of the oriental adventures and such things like that. |
| #2DragoncatMay 30, 2009 23:16:38 | It's dead, Jim. |
| #3jlaurhughes_dupMay 30, 2009 23:25:09 | Ki is no longer going to be a fully fleshed power source, and the Samurai is going to be a group of feats similar to the Gladiator and Assassin articles in dragon. Other Ki classes will be put into other power sources. I can see Ninja going to Shadow, especially if they lean more toward the anime influences. |
| #4lucifernietzscheMay 30, 2009 23:26:14 | Yup, Ki is no more. Oriental adventures can still happen...it's just that any formerly asian classes will be new "culture-neutral" versions and/or just new builds of current classes. |
| #5alphasquirellMay 31, 2009 0:08:27 | It's dead, Jim. Dragoncat is full of epic win. But yes, Ki was killed. We were more or less told "Elemental and Shadow could potentially be fleshed out and work, but Ki would have to be forced, and was thus nixed so that it's components might be placed where they fit better". The Monk, then, is a Psionic class, to be released in the PHB3 with the rest of the "Psionic launch". This more or less means we won't get "forced" classes like the Samurai (which would work better as feats/powers/paragonpath for a Fighter), and classes like the Ninja and Wu Jen can be built/flavored to fit other power sources better. |
| #6TheLoneClericMay 31, 2009 0:25:21 | It's dead, Jim. Dang. Beat me too it. Also. Go hit up my Newbie Faq. Ki goes the way of the DODO. Extinct. |
| #7ranadielMay 31, 2009 6:41:19 | It's dead, Jim. It isn't dead.....it is just in cryostasis with a very low chance of every being woken up(and I hope it someday will). :P |
| #8GrazelMay 31, 2009 23:44:32 | Your sentiment is part of the reason they killed off Ki. They didn't want it to become the 'Asian Power Source'. That's why it's lost traction. The classes that will work as something to stand aside from other classes, the rest will likely go into feat trees, Paragon Paths, or builds as best works for the concepts. |
| #9KoboldAvengerJun 01, 2009 9:39:27 | I'm happily dancing over it's grave because they couldn't think of anything to make it but the 'Asian power source'. |
| #10BolongoJun 01, 2009 9:47:37 | It's dead, Jim. Succinct and to the point. Well played. I must admit to enjoying the Dead Parrot Sketch appropriation more, though. ;) |
| #11SongSooGumbupJun 01, 2009 10:33:08 | personally i still wish for it to be fleshed out. though that's only because id wish for a samurai class instead of it just being a kind of add on feat for the fighter. I also would like to see a samurai class, or some ki classes. I have noticed however, that most of the ideas for non-Japanese ki classes that I think up resemble Jedi (George Lucas did admit that he got much of his inspiration from Akira Kurosawa and Jidaigeki films). Admittedly, Jedi fit the psionic power source better than the ki power source. Who knows, maybe a samurai class will appear in the psionic power source. As I wrote in another thread, I still feel that replacing ki with psionic is like exchanging a traditional tea ceremony with a Starbucks power lunch, but the switch works. Many of the ideas for the samurai class match many of the ideas for psionic classes (wind slash distant enemies --> soulblade/mental knife, debuffing ki shouts --> mental battle to hinder opponents). The only samurai niche not covered might be eaten up by the psionic controller. If the psionic controller isn't a samurai, then the samurai will have to be a group of feats and some reflavoring of classes: NIten Ichiryu Samurai --> Two Weapon Ranger Archer Samurai --> Archer Ranger Heavy Amour Samurai --> Fighter Noble General Samurai --> Paladin No Armor, One-Strike-One-Kill, Ronin Samurai --> Avenger Anime Multi-Ranged Blade Samurai --> [Psionic Controller] Throw in a feat that allows a close burst one Iaijustu attack and all aspects of the samurai are covered. This isn't the way I'd prefer to have a samurai, or the way I'd make one if I were President of Wizards of the Coast, but it works and I'd accept it. |
| #12ignizJun 01, 2009 16:05:15 | I'd like it to come back as their excuses for its death were ridden with holes. Don't want Ki to be the asian power source, then don't, and who cares if it turned out that way? Think Samurai could be Fighters, you're not looking at the right Samurai's. The Ki / Spirit power source could be leant to a lot of ideals, and Mearls and co basically failed on that front. |
| #13alphasquirellJun 01, 2009 16:50:56 | Think Samurai could be Fighters, you're not looking at the right Samurai's So you're saying it's perfectly fair for the Samurai class to have exclusive abilities form the Fighter class, despite the fact that they both fall under the "Fighter" archetype? Personally, I hope we never get a Samurai class. Samurai abilities should be powers/feats/pargonpaths/options available to the Fighter class. Want to be a Samurai? Pick those abilities and be one! Want to be something else, and pick some of those abilities? Go for it! Before, you were screwed if you wanted Samurai-like abilities but didn't want to be a Samurai, because you couldn't get them any other way. I think making the Samurai part of the Fighter class is more about integrating the "Warrior" archetype under one name, allowing you to mix and match and pick and choose as need be. Samurai shouldn't be a different class from Fighter, anymore than Spartan, or Crusader, or a member of the Roman Legionnaire. I wouldn't call the current Fighter able to fulfill the role of a Samurai, but he should be made ABLE to, as opposed to creating a new Samurai class. |

An entire race of people? Who cares if everything African gets thrown under the "Savage N-word" powersource, its just a game, right? Think Samurai could be Fighters, you're not looking at the right Samurai's. No, I don't think you're looking at the "right" Samurai. The Ki / Spirit power source could be leant to a lot of ideals, and Mearls and co basically failed on that front. Except all its supposed ideals fit into other powersources better than it fits into a unique one. |

I'll accept the samurai becoming a group of feats, options and background ideas, but I hope it's not just limited to the fighter class. The fighter samurai can be done more with reflavoring than with anything else. Additionally, I'm a bigger fan of the unarmored Sengoku-jidai samurai that was the inspiration for all the spaghetti westerns. When compared to the other options for a samurai, the fighter seems so bland. |

Edo-jidai. :P Sengoku was the warring period, where samurai of the time are more accurately represented by the Fighter and Warlord classes. |

When compared to the other options for a samurai, the fighter seems so bland. And maybe it would work better with another class, or as a group of "Martial" options open to a variety of classes. My point was, it works better as an option as opposed to a full class on it's own right. Hmm, maybe it could be a set of multiclass feats, but not a full class. Like, there's a "Way of the Samurai" multiclass feat, and powers that can be chosen through the multiclass feats. Then you can "paragon multiclass" into the Samurai. Combined with other Samurai feats and Samurai-esque Martial powers for each class (possibly themed, so a the Warlord's Samurai power is a leading power, a Fighter Samurai power is a defending power, etc, so you could have multiple Martial classes in a party become Samurai, and still be unique classes). You start off with little to ID you as a Samurai, but as you level up, you can devote feats/powers to becoming a Samurai, advancing as fast as you want, where ultimately in, say, mid-Paragon level, you can do what a Samurai version of your class should be able to do. You know, that'd be a neat way to approach themes for characters that cut across several classes. You can multiclass into it as long as you meet some basic requirements, and can do everything you'd want to do, even though the base content might not fill a full class (or be different enough from existing classes to exist itself). |
| #19GrazelJun 01, 2009 21:48:28 | Think Samurai could be Fighters, you're not looking at the right Samurai's. Actually they point that the samurai fit better as specializations of other classes, and named the Paladin specifically, not the fighter. I think they saw what was posted here already, that different types of samurai fit different classes already out there just missing a feature and/or power (or two) to make them into a samurai. That's why they work well as a feat tree. Then they can fit onto other base classes to make the type of samurai the player wants. The problem with making them a full class is that the different themes of samurai fit different roles and sometimes even power sources (ranger/fighter is martial, paladin is divine, some are strikers other defenders, and still others are leaders). While some cling to the 3e class/PrC concept for needing a samurai class to be a samurai, I think the MC-class route works better as it allows more diversity in samurai without limiting them to a Paragon Path. |
