First, let me say that I am new to this forum, and while I know there are probably several threads regarding this subject, and I did check a few of them out, I wasn't sure that any of them were appropriate for my questions. So, I have started what is surely just another thread about a topic that has far too many unknowns. Secondly, I may be at somewhat of a disadvantage. I haven't D&D for years, and the last rules system I used where the Optional Skills & Powers and Combat and Tactics books. Which I happened to like, though I know many others were not fans. I do however still read the novels, Forgotten Realms mainly, and while I no longer play, I still like to follow the events of the world of Faerun. So, I get this entire Spellplague thing happens. Shar and Cyric conspire to kill Mystra, the weave "collapses" and magic ceases to work. Several other Gods die or disappear, most of the well known NPC's of the realms do the same. Thus giving WoTC a clean slate for their new system. But I have some questions. MANY questions actually. So, The Time Of Troubles stripped priests of Magic for a year. There was chaos and disasters, dogs and cats lived together and all that. But the Spellplague lasts for ten years. Ten years without magic. I read on the FR Wiki that most of the wizards die or go insane. And rightly so, their very power was stripped away from. Probably the same feeling a drug addict feels when going through withdrawals. But is ALL magic gone? Arcane and Spiritual? Is it the opposite of the Time of Troubles? Can priests still garner spells? Do magic items still work? I mean, the difference between the ToT and the SP is the length of time. Think of the social implications. If items still work, empires would use their resources to garner as many as they could. The same way some countries go after resources like oil today. After a few years, I would think the idea that magic will never return would begin to occur to the populace of Faerun. Is there a rise in Psionics? Is there a rise in technology? I'm simply saying that for 10 years there is a void, and as so many laws of science and examples of history, something will ultimately fill that void. Thus, what is life life for the people of Faerun? I think it would be chaos, similar to the dark ages of our ow world. You would see panic and the worst characteristics of "man" come to the forefront. There would be fewer heroes, and more good people forced to make tough decisions to preserve their homes, towns, hamlets, kingdoms, and families. Am I making sense? It seems to me that WoTC has revealed this cataclysmic event. But haven't done enough work fleshing out the details. They just set the new system 100 years into the future figuring that would be enough. Please, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm still a huge fan of the novels and the world I used to play in. I think I have put enough out for now.
