| #2Omnirahk_half-RahkshiSep 02, 2011 10:49:01 | The funny thing is, I've been tossing around an idea for constellations for star pact warlocks (and something for shamans too). Just never got the idea fleshed out, and now someone beats me to it. I'm very excited to see this happening. It'd be cool if you could actually summon a constellation, though no striker has yet to get summons. Scratch that - hexblade. I imagine appealing to a specific constellation being a daily power as you channel the ideal it represents for a longer period of time. IRL, constellations have stories associated with them - great heroes and their nemeses forever remembered in the stars. Basically, they have something of a primal spirits or vestiges feel to them. I think it'd be nice to play that up. While many starlocks traffic with Far Realm(esque) entities, those who gain their power from constellations instead channel the great heroes who were raised up to hold the more sinister stars at bay. Which begs the question: the monsters also seen up in the stars - were they recruited willingly "as antiheroes," forced into service after their defeat, or have the darker stars chosen their own champions? EDIT: First post! |

Make sure I don't contradict or create redundant stuff. |

If they don't get their powers from the far realm and instead get their powers from great heroes of long ago remembered in constellations then that sounds like vestige pact, not star pact. I've always been under the impression that starlocks get their powers directly from far realm entities and that the stars/space are just a thematic element serving a similar function to what the oceans do in Cthulhu mythos. |

Just never got the idea fleshed out, and now someone beats me to it. I'm very excited to see this happening. Well, that is why my attempts to play a character who drew on constellations was either a vestige pact warlock or a shaman. That said, I think there's room to expand the star pact a little. I remember when I first read the Player's Handbook that while many star pact spells were Mythos/Far Realm, others were the more traditional fate aspect. And it's the fate/astrology part of the star pact that's really appealed to me. The way I see it, there ought to be enough support that you could play up just one aspect. Besides, that Dragon article on warlock patrons (I forget which one it is) included for the star pact a comet that's actually a time traveling entity trying to prevent the apocalypse. If I recall correctly, it was implied that other stars engineered this downfall. If I am recalling correctly, that means that not all stars are Far Realm evil and madness. And if I recall correctly, a still earlier article suggested that some stars are "normal." Not all are twinkling eyes of the Far Realm. If I'm wrong, that's at least the story I prefer to use. And honestly, it makes sense - if some stars are holes into the Far Realm and primal magic is opposed to the Far Realm, I could imagine ancient, powerful magic being used to elevate champions to the skies to combat those stars and seal off their power. Moreover, the Star Favored Champion epic destiny (martial power 2) ends with your character getting their very own constellation. So yes, constellations as I wrote may sound strongly vestige pact oriented, but there's room for star pact too. Besdies, Arcane Power had warlock powers with riders for two pacts (Infernal or Dark and Fey or Dark I remember specifically). If I were the one writing this article, I'd probably create constellation-themed powers that could be either star or vestige pact. |
| #10The-Magic-SwordSep 11, 2011 18:03:25 | i could see having the constellations not be specific heroes and monsters from history, but rather an embodyment of a concept for example, "The Great Warrior" could be a constellation, that may or may not have been named for someone in history, but more importantly summons a spirit embodying the concept the constellation looks like. |
| #11VestrasSep 15, 2011 11:46:24 | Whatever we end up getting, I do hope it feels more astrological than far realmy. If the article gives enough good fluff and crunch, that will make my concept Char from a Delve Night work all the better |
