Anyone have any news about this certain class? In 3.5 he was an extremely fun character to play as.

Please share you're knowledge on the upcoming class. I would love to know a lot about him and how he'll incorporate into 4th edish.

As Sala said, there will be a Playtest in Dragon in May (if you subscribe of course). The monk will makes it's official debut in the PHB3 next year.

Odd, the previos playtesta where open to everyone.
I hope that they contune that, to insure more playtesters.

Until then, this link has some quick dirty rules for making a monk.

There's still enough subscribers to ensure a fairly reasonable playtest of the class. This way they just get more subscribers. Clever move, WotC, but it is I who has all the queens.

The Artificer was done during the open preview period of DDI and the Barbarian was done just as they started the pay service for DDI but decided to make it available to everyone.

There have been multiple playtests since (AV2, Martial Power 2 off the top of my head) and they haven't been released to the public. I doubt future ones would be different. (although I reserve the right to be wrong on that )

Well, the monk is said that its going to be arcane based i believe, at least that is what I've read, which disappoints me. I'm just gonna go ahead and make my own because I want some martial ability. I'm also really peeved that wotc just isn't submitting one book for it all, instead they are spreading it out so they can make more money.

Where did you get that the monk was going to be arcane. It states in PHBI that the monk is a Ki class.

Yeah, the monk is Ki based. Whoever told you that it was arcane is on crack.

It's probably not arcane, as others have noted, and it probably is ki, as others have noted. At any rate, we'll have a much stronger confirmation of it with the May playtest, as others have noted.

Only if Xiaolin Showdown is the next campaign setting.

Bill said he'd hint at the next one in coming Ampersands, and Xiaolin Showdown was the hint I got from the Ampersand yesterday...

I'd call this myth "Plausible".

I have absolutely no info whatsoever. But that's never stopped me betting before So put me down for Ki Striker with secondry role as Controller. I'm also betting they'll have some superior weapon profs and an at-will that gives 'em 2 attacks (a bit like Ranger). Just to make myself look really stupid I'm also going for Dex/Wis/Con as the main stats; cloth armour prof with an AC bonus for not using arnour and a PP that involves an animal style.

Seeing as I've been so right before (Barbarian is the Primal Defender, right?), I'll throw in my 2c. I'm gonna agree, Ki Striker seems like the obvious favorite, and I'll go with Wisdom primary, with Str and Con as secondaries. Wis/Str will be secondary defender, operating by confronting enemies through basically wrestling (grapples, slides, etc.) with them. Wis/Con will be secondary controller, channelling debuffing/DoT attacks through their fists or weapons and focusing more on mobility than the other build.

I'm picking the first Monday of May, that being the 3rd, for the monk playtest to appear. Odds on the unarmed build being the one showcased.

I hope it's Dex-based, with Wisdom or Intelligence secondary. Half the PHB2 classes are Wisdom primary, and what does Dex have? Rogue and half the Ranger.

I could see two builds in the cleric style. One that uses DEX and is more of a 'brawler' style, the other using Wisdom and being more into the spiritual crud.

Wait...

You are peeved that they did not realease EVERY SINGLE CLASS THAT THERE EVER WILL BE IN 4E in a SINGLE BOOK?

Honey, it isn't any more "spreading it out so they can make money" than how there wasn't a Ninja until a splat came out for 3E.

Not to mention the fact that that book would be about as thick as the NYC phone book and costs three hundred dollars.

I'm betting it's going to be Wis primary on both builds, with strength primary for a unarmed brawler (defender secondary) build and DEX for a weapons style based (leader secondary) build. There might be a little controller in it all with stuns and such.

I'd probably make the DEX build Striker with secondary in Striker.

Right... because the goal of their business is to prepare everything for 4th edition, publish it in one huge book for about $400, listen to people complain about the cost of the book, sell a bunch of copies of it, close the business and fire everyone until they decide to do 5e.

That's an awesome business strategy!

Playtest, most likely very much in the same way the barbarian was. Druid was not a playtest, it came out way to late to be one.

When did the sorcerer change? The only time i heard it called another arcane controller was by player speculation, not from anythign official. (unless it was in the 4e preview books, but I never bought those)

Sorry I don't have a link, but I'm sure one of the lovely members of these boards can provide one for you, but one of the designers mentioned how they thought it would be interesting to make the Sorcerer another arcane controller, but markedly different from the Wizard…I guess it didn't work out.

It wasn't Races and Classes, it was Rich Baker's blog. As a side note, the comment was 10 months before the PHBII came out.:P

That mean taking the sorcerer back to the broad story concepts (concepts that evolved later in the sorcerer's original 3e design, since the sorcerer began with mechanics in 3e) and thinking hard about what it *could* be and how it could occupy the same role and power source as the wizard but be a different class. I think we've got some great ideas cooking up on that score. (Hint: It might involve some wild magery.)

My guesses for the monk:

Source/Role: Ki Striker (Ki Defender is the most likely role if the monk isn't a striker)

Key Stats: Dexterity, Strength, Wisdom. (I'm guessing one of the monk's builds will be DEX/WIS because it fits well and the Githzerai, which has monk as an iconic class, uses these attributes. Strength is an easy guess for the third attribute, though whether it will be WIS/STR or DEX/STR I'm not sure. Constitution is a possible alternative, but so many classes in PHB2 have used CON already).

The monk will focus mostly on unarmed attacks. "Monk weapons" like the nunchaku or sai will probably serve the purposes of adding extra weapon properties, like Unarmed/Flail or Unarmed/Light Blade, respectively. Weapon properties for unarmed attacks will likely be contained in the monk's implement (beads? ki straps?). There will probably be a second class for "monks" that use swords and spears (Swordsage? Samurai?) that will take the Striker/Defender role which the monk doesn't.

The first two builds will probably be something like this:

Offensive Monk (WIS/STR or DEX/STR): Focuses on flurries of attacks and powerful, stunning strikes. Serves as a secondary Defender.

Defensive Monk (DEX/WIS): Focuses on throws, defensive manuevers, and lockdown attacks (similar to the Setting Sun discipline from 3.5E). Serves as a secondary Controller.

Ki-blasting, ranged monks will probably either be moved to their own class or reserved for the Ki Power book.

nah it woudln't be a problem you could fit it all on a USB sotrage device 'cos it would be in PDF.... oh hang on a minute ;)
I'd love to see the Monk as a Controller, using movement, reach weapons (chains) etc to effect baddies in their face. Like shifting at speed and such like. It would then be something completely different... but I doubt that would happen. Check out the martial artist class in Ari marmelss Adv Players Guide, it is a coool striker. Rather than the extra striker damage from quarry etc he can do an attack every round as a minor action doing the extra damage. I love it!

I could see Monk Weapon as a weapon enchantment that works like Songblades, but with an expanded weapon group selection. Heavy Blades, Light Blades, Polearms, Spears, Maces maybe.
