Well I'm about to go to bed, but someone pointed this little gem as I was doing my final checks for the night.

For anyone who doesn't know off hand, a thaumaturge is apparently a worker of miracles(thank you dictionary.com). So then the question becomes, did we just have a name leak for the Divine Controller or was someone just showing off their vocabulary? I'll leave it for you to decide becuase my bed is calling to me right now. *falls asleep on his feet*

Well, one of the Mystery Classes does start with a 'T' . . .

This could be the case, but after reading the blog, part of me thinks it might be his healthy vocab.

black energy arced from the statues to the platform and swirled around a mammoth creature of hideous mien with extrusions growing from its back

I mean, how many people do you know use "mien"?

"Thaumaturge" used in that entry could merely be a synonym of "Wizard". Even though in the past there's been many classes that are different, whose names describe the same things.

It could simply be his wordy way of saying Wizard, yes, but here're four important facts.

1) We're lacking a 'T' class from PHB2, and Thaumaturge starts with T. 2) Thaumaturge is a good name for a Divine Controller, and there's been talk of a Divine Controller. 3) It isn't unusual for WotC folk to include playtest classes in their campaigns. 4) And last but not least, Kathra is a Dwarfs name. One would assume that a Divine Controller would have Wisdom as an important stat, and Dwarves get a Wisdom bonus. So Kathra's player may have chosen to play a dwarf because it makes for a good combo with the Divine Controller class.

None of that means anything, of course, if the guy's actually talking about a Wizard, but oh, one can hope.

Kathra wandered off to look at one of the statues, which Biggie figured was a waste of magery but turned out to be pretty smart after all.

This was where Kathra's big brain paid off.

Those (along with Thaumaturge) look like off-hand references to a Wizard to me.

We've got as much suggesting the 'T' class might be Theurge too, which also starts with a 'T'. There's nothing confirming it'll be a class, other than some post from the designers saying what a Divine Controller might look like and the suggestion of the name Theurge. Though no hard evidence in that case either.

I didn't say we knew the name would be Thaumaturge. Just that it was an appropriate name. It's immaterial, though, as that apparently wasn't a class name.

Miracle is a translation for thauma, but "wonder" is more common. Thaumaturgy in other contexts usually refers to magic. I'd count on it being an arcane striker before a divine controller.

The thaumaturge used to be a specialist wizard (like the Illusionist) back in the second edition for the school of Invocation, if I remember correctly.

Thaumaturgy is generally, in a fantasy setting, the magic discipline that focuses on the basic workings of magic.

Thaumat (the greek root) translates as miracle, but applies equally to any miraculous event, be it of Divine, Arcane, Infernal, or other source.

Thaum has been commonly used, in the past in D&D, as a general root for magic, I.E. a being that lived off magic was a Thaumovore.

So, all that being said, Thaumaturge may be the name of one of the new classes in the PHBII, but I doubt it's the Divine Controller we're expecting.
Though I could be wrong.

I'm really hoping the "T" class in the PHB is a Theurge – Divine Controller.

I've actually used the word magery in response to divine magic as well. Magery and magic go hand in hand. Maybe the Thaumaturge is an educated scholastic type of caster that strips its magic from the astral sea in the same way the wizard pulls its magic from the feywild. That would add some much needed godlessness or agnosticism to the divine power source.

I realize this is just speculation but it's entirely possible.

FWIW, there are duergar "theurges" in H2: Thunderspire Labyrinth. Dunno if it's related or not, but they are controllers.

EDIT: I just checked, and the fluff says they command arcane powers, so perhaps it's just a coincidence.

maybe will be getting two more controllers.
Theurge will be arcane (aka the "fan boy class" summoner)
and a Witch divine...just a guess based on speculation seen around these boards. :P

The arcane classes are confirmed to be Bard and Sorceror. And I've never seen anyone suggest that the theoretical witch class is divine before, everyone always says Primal.

The duergar theurge doesn't do summoning. It just does devilish stuff ... brimstone hail and stuff like that.
